It was now time to add the canopy

thanks to the fact that the canopy has
some fuselage moulded to it helping create
a more natural and seam-free canopy join.
Unfortunately, the front canopy was a poor fi t,
there being a gap either side of the frame and
it sat slightly too proud. I used an F-clamp to
hold the canopy down as well as I could and
used Mr. Hobby Cement S to glue the canopy

I used Mr. Hobby GX100 and Mr. Hobby

followed by a wet coat to get a nice smooth
shine to the model. With the gloss coat as
hard as a rock, the application of decals could
begin. This aircraft did not have that many
decals or stencils to apply, which for me is
always great. The markings are simple so
decals could be completed in one evening

decal solutions ready I could start the decals.
I cut each decal out and then soaked them in

I applied a small amount of Micro Set to the

many applications of decal solution, the decals

FINAL VERDICT
This is a new tool by Revell, and it really shows. This kit is simple fantastic. No, Revell kits will never compete
with the likes of Tamiya for detail, fi t and engineering, but these kits are released for a specifi c price range and
market. I cannot express how good the value for money is with this kit, For around £35 you get a beautiful aircraft,
in a large scale, with a fully detailed cockpit, gun bay and two full engines and a choice of marking options with two
stunning schemes. There are going to be some minor bumps in the road when building this kit, but it is nothing that
some basic modelling skills cannot overcome. If you can deal with some minor fi t issues, then this kit is sublime. I
had an enormous amount of joy building this kit and I thank Spencer Pollard for allowing me to build this kit for you
to all see. Revell really have knocked this one out of the park.

that the completed elevator unit was now a

Painting The Spattered Lozenge
With all of the interior components completed,
the two fuselage halves were glued together
and seam lines sanded smooth. The precision
of the parts is as ever remarkable, given the
number of individual elements that have to
come together, but it is worth noting that any
build up of paint can affect the mating of parts,
such is the level of it. With this unit complete
I began my irst attempts at the handpainted
lozenge section of the wing. After some
experiments with Citadel and Vallejo paints,
I thought that by handpainting in a similar
30 way then over spraying the mottle I would
get a decent result, so after marking out the
lozenges with pencil I painted them using paint
thinned with Mr. Color 250 Thinner - Photos
26 & 27.
I had already consulted the tutorial on
the Wingnut Wings website linked to details
about the model, and Zdenko Bugan’s results
using an airbrush throughout are superb. It
is recommended that in order to achieve a
suitable mottle, an overspray with a mixture
of Tamiya Deck Tan XF-55 and Yellow Green
XF-4 mixed at a ratio of 4:1 with the pressure
of the airbrush turned very low would give you
an appropriate spatter inish. The results were
okay, but looking at photos of the aircraft it
would appear that the lozenge underneath was
sprayed on, and the inish that I’d achieved
didn’t quite look right. I therefore decided
to follow the tutorial completely by spraying
on the lozenges, and guess what, it worked
perfectly! The Tamiya colours recommended

KIT BUILD
I deliberately left attaching the undercarriage
until last as I’m always astounded at how these
spindly structures can support the weight of
the model, and after doing so attached the
remaining fragile smaller details such as the
Parabellum machine gun, anemometer, mirror,
and the oddly shaped tubular vent attached to
the radiator that I fashioned from brass wire
and scraps of photo-etched material. Some
fi nal dusting and weathering with oil washes
and the model was complete. ■
FINAL VERDICT
Building Wingnut Wings kits is always a joy and a pleasure, but you know that with a tricky build like this you might
expect to confront one or two problems. I wasn’t prepared for the ill-fi tting tail, nor the problems with the aileron
edges and lozenge decals, and getting the cowlings to hug the tightly fi tting nose also required a considerable amount
of clamping. All in all though these are annoyances rather than any major problems, and things that can be sorted if
you have some modelling experience. I was glad that I persevered with the paint fi nish and I can recommend visiting
the tutorial on the Wingnut Wings website, particularly as I wanted to build the kit as near to out of the box as
possible without reliance upon aftermarket products. I tried hand painting to save time but really the most effective
way to achieve the fi nish is with an airbrush. However for those who might be put off by the complexities of the fi nish,
Richard Andrew’s Aviattic now produce some excellent pre-cut decals for the kit in a variety of fi nishes and shades
covering all of the options within the two kits, and I must admit there were times when I nearly succumbed myself.
This is a great model and looks every inch the graceful Halberstadt depicted in the photos. All I need to do now is to
build a Hannover to go with it!
Our thanks go to Richard Alexander and Wingnut Wings for the review sample.

TAMIYA 1:32 F4U-1A
and F4U-1D CORSAIR
When Tamiya released their 1:32 scale Spitfi re
Mk.IXc in 2009, they set a new standard for plastic
model kits. Each model since then has seen
incremental improvements. Just when you think the
series can’t get any better, Tamiya goes and proves
you wrong.
Their 1:32 scale Birdcage Corsair was released
in mid-2013. This was an outstanding kit in every
respect.
Tamiya expanded their 1:32 scale Corsair family
with an F4U-1A in late 2014. This kit included
several new sprues and offered a wider range of
camoufl age and marking possibilities.
Tamiya has now completed the -1 trio with their
new 1:32 scale F4U-1D Corsair. Once again, this kit
includes a signifi cant number of brand new sprues
to depict the unique attributes of this variant.
We can also marvel at the kit’s subtle surface
textures, high level of detail, clever parts breakdown
and accuracy.
In this new book, we provide an exhaustive step-
by-step illustrated guide to building and detailing Only
the 1:32 scale F4U-1D and F4U-1A, offering plenty
of inspiration with two different confi gurations and £1 4.95
plus p&p
colour schemes.
We have also a bonus Chapter on building Tamiya’s
1:48 scale Corsair family, offer some tips for
painting pilot fi gures and include a helpful walk
around of a Corsair under restoration.

LIGHTNING STRIKE
1:72 F-35 B Lightning II STOVL Version (1425)
This is a new tool kit which provides fantastic detail for 1:72nd scale,
you can nearly feel the uplift from the engine fan behind the cockpit.
The JSF Joint Strike Fighter program was set up to develop a new generation of all-weather
multirole combat aircraft able to replace the existing United States and NATO strike-fighters.
The F-35B Lightning is a fifth-generation combat aircraft, based at RAF Marham. The
short take-off and vertical landing (STOVL) capability allows it to operate from the new
‘Queen Elizabeth’-class aircraft carriers, vessels of allied nations and short airstrips. In
July 2012 the government decided to purchase an initial batch of 48 aircraft. By 2015 the
Strategic Defence and Security Review confirmed the UK’s intention to buy 138 Lightnings
and undertook a massive infrastructure upgrade at RAF Marham. Britain currently has 17
F-35B’s & operational sorties have been flown over Iraq and the Levant countries. Successful
trials have also been undertaken aboard HMS Queen Elizabeth and it is expected that full
carrier strike capability will be achieved in 2020. The last of the initial 48 Lightnings are
expected for delivery in January 2025. In the meantime a schedule for the remaining 90
aircraft and further squadron formations are likely to be put in place. The F-35B is capable of
conducting air-to-surface, electronic warfare, intelligence gathering and air-to-air missions
simultaneously, making it the RAF’s first multi-role supersonic stealth aircraft.
