N ADDITION TO SAYING “MAMMA MIA” WHILE WAVING PINCHED
fingers in your face and introducing the world to the joys of pizza and spaghetti bolognese,
the Italians also seem to possess a flair for beauty. Their designers always seem to have the
best outcome when pen meets paper for sketching a motorcycle. Some motorcycles outdo
their good looks by being phenomenal on tarmac. With this road test, we aim to find out
where the Benelli Leoncino 250 finds itself in that graph of stunning looks and mind-
blowing performance.
The little Benelli retains the design language of its bigger twin-cylinder sibling in a more
compact package and these proportions give the Leoncino a neat retro-modern look. The stylish
LEDs give the round retro headlamp a contemporary touch and this design philosophy continues
throughout. The shapely fuel-tank tapers back until it matches the width of the seat and the
bodywork is fairly impressive with no panel gaps all the way to the tail end. The rear itself is free of
flamboyance and features just enough bodywork to round off the Leoncino 250’s modern-classic
persona. In fact, with aerodynamic elements flanking the radiator and a youthful paint scheme, the
Leoncino 250 certainly appeals to me more than the Leoncino 500. However, the general response
towards the styling was mixed. Some liked the quirky design while others quickly returned their
attention to their phones.

For the sixth edition of the India Bike Week, we’re taking down six cylinders
of old-school metal. The Royal Enfield Interceptor 650, the Triumph Speed
Twin, and the Harley-Davidson Heritage Classic are all about that classic
charm with a modern twist. And keeping with the trend, these bikes grow
in increments of 600-cc too. We are all convinced that each rider made a
perfect choice with his bike and we’ve made our points right here

wrong and should have chosen what I rode. I rode my very own motorcycle, the brilliant Royal Enfield
Interceptor 650, albeit with a little customization. the Interceptor may not be as powerful as the other two
Ihere. It does not fillet corners as well as the triumph speed twin or isn’t as comfortable in the saddle as
the harley-davidson heritage classic. however, what it has is the best of both worlds. let me tell you why.
my customization combined new rims, tyres, handlebar, and a full silencer kit (new bend pipes and end-cans).
my rims are now 17-inch ones that really help in holding the line a lot better. aclip-on handlebar may not seem the
best idea for a slightly long journey, but I had absolutely no issues where comfort was concerned.the new exhaust
system, though a little loud at high revs, had my Interceptor moving at a very decent pace and, after a dyno session,
showed a bump of four horsepower (more on that in our IBW coverage elsewhere in this issue). this exhaust system
alone has now shaved off 16 kilos, moving the weight of those heavy cans towards the centre of the machine.
additionally, the Interceptor was much better with fuel management, making it the ideal bike for this trip.
to sum up, I would advise all of you to try riding a Royal Enfield Interceptor if you have not done so.the bike
has put a smile on the face of everyone who gave it a shot. Royal Enfield motorcycles are also far easier to service on
Indian highways than most other brands. Every nook and cranny has a Royal Enfield doctor. for those of you who
have tried the bike, I strongly advise you to think of the 17-inch rims and exhaust system. you really can feel the
difference immediately.

that I have been longing to spend some more time with ever since we reviewed it earlier this year.
the instant torque from the 1,200-cc liquid-cooled twin perfectly complements my somewhat
aggressive riding style and, on the open highway, this retro-styled motorcycle had no problem
m keeping up with the bigger and more powerful bikes at unmentionable speeds. of course, the
lack of wind protection tested my neck and shoulder muscles to the limit, while the somewhat forward-canted riding
position may not be ideal for long rides. however, once we were through belgaum and were let loose on that
excellent ribbon of tarmac that traverses chorla ghat, the speed twin showed off its dynamic side and we were
blasting through the never-ending set of corners at triple-digit speeds surrounded by the dense greenery of the region.
after a quick lunch stop, we were back on the road, albeit at a slower pace with full bellies and were faced with a
few kilometres of bad roads before entering goa. the speed twin took the rough with the smooth and I was
surprised at how easily it took potholes and bad patches of road in its stride without rearranging my spine. soon we
were following the narrow goan roads to our hotel and, even here, the speed twin felt right at home, its extremely
manoeuvrable nature making it easy to squeeze through gaps and get ahead of traffic. the only issue with riding
this bike at low speeds is the heat coming off the engine, so I wouldn’t advise riding the speed twin to the market
in shorts.
from the open highway to the twists and turns of the Western ghats and the narrow roads of goa, the speed twin
brought me to IbW in speed and style. I think this motorcycle suits me better than anything else in triumph’s
modern classic line-up, combining scorching performance with its classic design.

highways (for the most part)? you want a proper h-d tourer then, that’s a no-brainer (just like my colleagues,
not so much their choices). and keep in mind that I reviewed both bikes that my esteemed colleagues brought
along on this ride when they first came out, so my choice was an informed one too. and, honestly, the heritage
a softail was far and away the standout on the highway stretches. that massive windshield kept headwind at
bay. the 144 nm of torque from that smooth milwaukee-Eight 107 engine meant I could cruise at highway speeds with ease.
and add cruise control, that gorgeous, comfortable seat, and relaxing floor-boards into the mix, and I was chillin’ like a villain.
the part that the h-d didn’t quite shine in was during the diversions for road work. bad roads, a heavy bike, and low
ground clearance? not my idea of fun. but it wasn’t an insurmountable problem and, luckily, those patches were limited in
terms of size and only popped up from time to time until we crossed kolhapur.
the heritage looks like a million bucks, too, and was constantly drawing all the eyeballs as we rode along. and while that
throaty growl from the big V-twin motor is usually quite a calling card, ironically, my harley was the only bike running stock
silencers. both the RE and the triumph had after-market units that outshouted my hog.
of course, when we hit the twisties of chorla en route, I couldn’t quite keep up with the two nimbler nakeds, and on
reaching goa the heat from the engine was a mild annoyance. navigating at low speeds through the narrow lanes was a bit
more challenging on this bike as compared to the other two as well. however, for its highway performance, mean looks, and
superlative comfort, I’d still pick the heritage every time and I still think it’s a no-brainer!
