When Daddy

Feeds the Baby

By Marcy Campbell • Art by Josh Cleland

When Daddy feeds the baby,

I snuggle in real close.

He says that it’s a special time,

the time he loves the most.

When Daddy feeds the baby,

we do all sorts of things.

We talk and talk. We share a snack.

And sometimes, we will sing:

“Oh, hungry little baby,

with tiny little feet,

your tummy isn’t tiny—

you eat and eat and eat!”

Tex and Indi

Tex and Indi were helping Mrs. Lee, their neighbor,

in her garden.

“Wow, I just found a big worm,” said Indi. “Should

I put it in the grass?”

6 June 2019

“No need,” said Mrs. Lee. “Happy worms mean

happy gardens!”

“Really?” asked Indi.

“Really and truly,” said Mrs. Lee. “And do you know

what makes a worm extra happy?”

“A worm friend to play with?” asked Tex.

“Well, yes.” Mrs. Lee laughed. “And also,

food scraps.”

June 2019 7

“You can put the apples we ate earlier into the compost

bin,” said Mrs. Lee.

Tex and Indi tossed their apple cores inside.

“The worms eat the raw fruits and veggies and dead

leaves and help make compost,” Mrs. Lee explained.

“Compost is dark soil that has good food for plants.

It helps my flowers grow big and beautiful.”

8 June 2019

At the end of the day, Mrs. Lee sent Tex and Indi home with

a surprise.

“Wow!” said Mom. “Thank you for these fantastic flowers.”

“You shouldn’t thank us,” said Indi.

“Right.” Tex grinned. “You should thank the worms.”

Callie helped her dad roll his suitcase to the door.

“I’ll be back tomorrow afternoon,” Dad said.

“Who will give me a bath? And read me a bedtime story?

And make pancakes in the morning?” asked Callie.

“Grandma will,” said Dad.

20 June 2019

“I know,” said Callie,

“but it won’t be the same.”

“I bet you’ll like

Grandma’s ways too,”

said Dad, giving Callie

a squeeze.

It was not the same. At

bath time, Grandma used a

lot of soap.

But the extra bubbles

made a perfect sudsy beard.

Grandma’s pancakes

But she let Callie add

“How’d it go?” he asked.

“Great! Grandma doesn’t do things the same,” said

Callie, “and I like her way too.”
