PL QUIDDITCH!

It’s an IRL sport!

When did you start playing Quidditch?
I heard about it in high school through word-of-mouth. I
thought it sounded a bit weird and dorky, but also like a lot
of fun. When I went to uni, I knew my 12-year-old self would
never forgive me if I didn’t at least try it out. I was really
nervous when I turned up because I had never really played
sport before, but everyone was so friendly that I ended
up sticking around. Since then, I’ve fallen in love with the
sport more and more. Now I can’t imagine not playing it.

Why did you choose the position of a Chaser? McConnell is
Ava
I originally picked it because it was what Ginny Weasley President of the
played, but I’ve grown to love it. It’s so fast-paced, with a University of Sydney
lot of strategy behind every play. It’s also just a lot of fun Quidditch Club and
to be the one scoring goals! a Chaser for the
Unspeakables!

What are some major differences between the
sport and what you see in the movies?
Aside from the flying, the biggest difference is the
Snitch. Instead of a golden metal ball that zips through
the air, we have a person with a tag stuck with velcro
to the back of their shorts. The Seeker’s job is to pull
the tag off, which ends the game and awards their
team 30 points.

The Beaters don’t have bats – mostly because that
would probably be too dangerous – but the players can
all tackle each other, which makes for a pretty intense

dodgeball, and we actually use
dodgeballs as Bludgers. There’s
nothing similar to Snitching – the
closest is probably wrestling,
as the two seekers have to
manoeuvre their way around
each other and the Snitch to
catch the Snitch tag.

I PLAY QUIDDITCH! BIG

What are some basic skills Leaps
needed to play?
Honestly, you don’t need to come
in with any skills! They teach to a
whole range of skill levels, so I went
in not being able to throw or catch
a ball, while other people come in
with state-level sport experience. It’s
really easy to pick up, though, and
new players improve very fast. The
only thing you need is a willingness
to try new things and make a bit of a
fool of yourself in the process.

What kind of training is involved?
We teach new recruits basic skills at the beginning of
the year: throwing, catching, and running with a broom
is hard because it’s so different to what we’re used to.
After that we move to more tactical things – specific
plays or moves that teams can do on offence or
defence – as well as fine-tuning our skills at
different positions.

Lastly, but most importantly, which Harry Potter movie and book are
your faves?

My favourite movie has to be the first one, because it’s where it all started. As
a kid, I wanted nothing more than to go to Hogwarts, and watching that movie
made it feel so real. I love all of the books, but my favourite is The Goblet of Fire.
I just read it so many times as a kid, and know it pretty much back-to-front. It’s
exciting, there’s a bit of romance and a lot of adventure – without being as serious
as the later books.

DANCING FOR

MY IDOLS

TG Zara danced for our cover stars, the Ziegler
girls – and got the best advice ever.

I look up to Maddie and Mackenzie; they’ve
accomplished so much at such young ages – that’s
admirable. Maddie tells a story with the way she
dances; her dancing is very emotional. I like Kenzie,
I like her style of dancing – hip-hop, which is what I do.

I saw them at The Roundhouse with lots of other girls
last year when they toured. They give a lot of tips: they
always say to keep on pushing – it’s not going to be easy
at the start. A lot of people give up if they don’t know
the dance at the start, but you just keep on pushing.
Another tip is, [dancing is] going to feel uncomfortable
but it’s going to look good. Another is to believe in
yourself and not give up.

It was weird seeing them in person! I was a bit
starstruck when I met them as well! Since I look up to
them, dancing with them and next to them was very
unreal. They’re very beautiful; they look the same as
they do on TV.

They danced with the choreographer and then we
danced and they came in through the crowd and did a
dance with us. And then they picked some elite dancers
to go up with them. I didn’t go up, I was not as good as
them! Those other girls were doing fl ips!

While we were dancing, they would come through the
crowd and stop and critique or give positive advice to
as many girls as possible. Mackenzie came up to me
and said I needed to be a bit more loose and that my
dancing was really good. That made me really happy for
the rest of the day. I was dancing hip-hop and jazz – it
wasn’t out of my comfort zone, but still challenged me.
“The most I want to learn all styles of dance and be really great
