ClayCraft - Issue 35 (January 2020)

ClayCraft is the perfect pottery magazine for enthusiasts of all levels, including those new to the subject, those at the early stages of learning, intermediate artists looking to improve their skills, as well as people who just love playing with clay.

explained Keith.
Keith was adamant that he didn’t want to
be involved with something where the
contestants are set up to be broken down.
Love Productions assured him it would be
a proper programme, promoting crafts, so
he agreed, and the rest is history.

MOULD

This is a really easy mould to make. It requires minimum
equipment and materials, and you won’t need to get your
hands into messy plaster!

DIFFICULTY RATING ★ ★ ★ ★★

You will need:
■ Foam mounting board – you will need to buy several sheets
of A3, su cient to make a mould 2-3 cm deep. Note: It can
apparently be bought in thicker sheets, but I couldn’t source any –
you may have better luck
■ Sheets of A3 paper – or a roll of wall lining paper
■ Blown vinyl textured paper
■ A3 sheet of craft foam
■ Ruler
■ Craft knife
■ Pencil
■ Compass or cookie
cutters (something to
make semicircles)
■ Ellipse tool for making
oval shapes
■ Double-sided tape
■ Cutting mat

that di€erent sized cutters will make deeper or shallower

Carefully cut the oval shape out, working through one
layer at a time.

To use the mould, suspend it over a box of some kind; it
can be plastic or a simple cardboard version, but it needs
to be large enough for the clay to slump in the mould
without touching the sides of the box it’s suspended over.

28

Because the mounting
board is covered with paper,
you will need to protect the surface
with something non-absorbent. (This is a
problem I discovered at my cost, proving that even
seasoned makers still have things to learn!)
So, to protect the surface, cut the mould template
out from the centre of your foam sheet then fix this
over the mould with double-sided tape.
Your mould is now ready to use.

the size of your template, so estimate accordingly.
Working on a sheet of plastic, reduce the bulk of
the clay by beating it with the side of your rolling 4
pin. Work in measured, even strokes from one side
of the clay to the other, to avoid making deep
grooves in the surface.
Roll out the clay between the roller guides, making
sure it will adequately accommodate the texture
template.
You will find that periodically turning the slab will

make rolling much easier and give you more control
over reaching the approximate shape that you
require.
With the roller guides still in place, position the
textured template on the slab and carefully roll it into the
clay.

5

Cut the shape out using a sharp knife. Discard the
excess clay from around the edge.

Lay the second sheet of plastic over the surface of the
slab and smooth it over gently so that there are no
creases in it.
Place the template marked ‘mould’ on the slab,
9 making sure it’s central, then lightly mark the
position with a pin.

Turn the slab over, sandwiched between the two
sheets of plastic, and then peel the bottom sheet o .

Gently smooth over the back of the slab with a rib.
DO NOT apply too much pressure; it will spoil the texture

17
Sit the slump mould over the slab, lining the oval up
with the scored line on the slab. Lift the mould and tap it on the sides of the box a few
times to encourage the slab to slump a little more.

14

Slip a board under the plastic sheet that the slab and 18
mould are lying on. You can do this after step 12 if you
prefer – it might make the process a little easier. You can encourage a deeper slump by working over
the untextured central surface with a soft kidney.
Note: If you began with a thick slab, it’s possible to
make the clay slump really deeply because the clay
has enough bulk to stretch. This becomes trickier
with thinner slabs and will require some
experimentation to see how far you can push it.

15

Turn everything over in one swift go – the board,
plastic sheet, slab and mould.
Rest the mould on the awaiting box and remove the
board.

Smooth over the inner surface of the dish one last
time to make sure it’s finished o neatly at the depth you
require.
Turn the board and mould over and lay it on the work
surface.
21
24

Firm the clay up with a hairdryer until you’re sure the
shape will hold when turned out of the mould.

Carefully lift the mould o the dish.
22 Now you can see why I recommend you add a sheet of
foam to the surface of the mould because you can clearly
see that a thin layer of the boards’ paper covering has
stuck to the surface of the clay. This isn’t a problem in
itself because it will burn away in firing, but it does spoil
the surface of the mould if not careful.

25

Pack the interior of the dish with soft plastic or
something similar, to support the shape when it’s
turned out of the mould.
Lay a board over the surface.

Roll a long, even coil of clay approximately 1.5cm thick
to form the foot of the dish.
Lay the coil on the underside of the dish in the required
position and overlap the ends. .

Allow the dish to dry out slowly before bisque fi ring.
Fix the disc in place carefully making sure not to spoil

Note: You might be wondering why I stamped the disc
before applying it to the surface. The answer is that I
didn’t want to risk distorting the body of the dish by
pressing the stamp into the surface without supporting
the clay from the underside. Added to this, I didn’t want
to distort the dish by lifting it at this stage.
