Star Wars: Vader–Dark Visions
Who is Darth Vader? The former Anakin
Skywalker has been both a Jedi hero and the
agent of the Order’s destruction. With the

longer shadow across the the Empire.
That outsized reputation is reframed through
new points of view in Star Wars: Vader–Dark
Visions, a 5-issue Marvel series by writer Dennis
Hopeless (Cloak and Dagger). In this far-ranging
collection of tales, those who have met Vader

“Skywalker Ranch is all about the props and
artwork—probably what people have in their
minds when they think of an ‘archive.’ It sounds 04
like a cliché, but it is out of this world. What
you’ve got there are the original lightsabers, the
destroyed Death Star from Return of the Jedi,
Han Solo in carbonite. You’ve even got an Ark of
the Covenant in there. You’ve got costumes, and
all the artwork.
“It’s low light because they don’t want to
damage anything,” Duncan continues. “It’s air
conditioned, and I had to wear gloves because
everything has to be protected. I open a drawer
and it’s full of original Ralph McQuarrie concept
paintings. I take them out one by one. I unwrap
each piece, I look at it. I think, ‘That’s nice.’
Typical Brit, underplaying it!” Duncan laughs at
his understated display of reverence at holding
something so important to the development of

Star Wars in his hands. “And when I look on the 05
back, there’s information telling you how many
days it took McQuarrie to create this piece. That’s
what you’re always looking for—information
about a who, what, where, and when.”
That Other Archaeologist
Not to further draw comparisons with another
famous George Lucas creation, but would it be
fair to call Duncan a cultural archaeologist? “I’ll
take that!” he smiles. “This is basically what
Indiana Jones does between movies. Before he
goes out to actually find the Ark, he has to do all
this research in archives to find the way he has to
go. That’s basically me. Indiana Jones. Obviously,
I’m too old, and balding, and fat…” Duncan adds
with healthy self-deprecation, “but this is what
I dream of!”
There were further Lucasfilm archive areas
that Duncan had the opportunity to explore,
each presenting its own challenges and rewards.
“There’s another place at the Ranch where they
have all the original negatives for the Lucasfi lm
movies,” he says. “They’ve got off-cuts and
b-roll. They have a record of all the original
negatives—when they were taken and what the
reference numbers are for every single shot, every
single take. But it’s in cold storage, so there I
am in California where it’s 80 to 90 degrees in 06
the shade, and I’m walking along in my T-shirt,
then I have to go into this cold storage and I’m
suddenly wearing four layers, a really thick coat,
a hat over my ears to keep to me warm, and
gloves in order to handle all these shelves of
production documents!
“The final area is the Lucas Research Library
in the main house of the Ranch. It’s a beautiful
library, run by Miki Bulos. It’s just to die for—two
stories full of books; I could literally live there,”
Duncan smiles. “Just outside, in the solarium,
there’s an archive of clippings for all the movies.
Through all of this I have to record and digitize
whatever materials I need in order to make the
book, so there’s a lot of processing work to do.”
Experiencing History
“It’s overwhelming when you step into an
archive,” Duncan says, “because you don’t the production documents, but I had no idea 05 Duncan found new

and still at school, the
young Duncan wasn’t

this until some friends

mythology, all these things he was able to pack 07
into the story of Star Wars as it developed. The
way the book edited together is that we have
elements of George talking about his background,
his philosophy on Star Wars, and then you have
an element about the making of it, then another
element that explains the philosophy, so that
it’s all interwoven and you understand why this
particular element is important. But it’s not to
say that it’s dry and po-faced. George is a funny
man, with a very understated sense of humor. I
thought it was important to show that, and I left
some of that material in the book so that people
understand he’s a real guy.”
Pure Idea
Following months of research trips, long-haul
flights, and armed with three days’ worth of
interview material from Star Wars’ creator, the
hard work was only just beginning for Duncan.
“When you’re turning research into a book, “When you’re

writing more than 200 books. “That’s when into a book, that’s

The result of two years of research, collating,
processing, and contextualising film history, is
a beautifully packaged volume that places the
09 original Star Wars trilogy in a very specifi c space
and time, viewed from a modern perspective.
“Revisiting Star Wars in such detail has made
me appreciate much more the humanity that
went into the project and the ideas behind it,”
Duncan says, summing up the experience of
working on The Star Wars Archives. “I tell people
I’m working on a Star Wars book, and their faces
light up because it holds a positive message about
how we live our lives. It’s only now that I can
truly understand that, and I’ve tried to bring that
understanding to others whose lives have been
brightened by Star Wars. I found it to be very
moving that such a pure idea has endured for so
many decades, and remains pure to this day.”
