STORY Birds in
the Backyard
Who is at the bird feeder?
One red cardinal
Two blue jays

Admire the colors with your child. Babies can help point to the birds. Talk with toddlers about what
happens when the cat appears. After reading the story, look outside to see real birds. What colors
are they? Do you see any cats or dogs?
Aflock of
happy birds.

Red
Light,
The words red light and green light can also
become a family code for things your child is or is not
allowed to do. If your toddler asks about the yellow light, add another verse:
Yellow light means wait, wait, wait, even if you’re late, late, late.

After your child finds the balloons by color, introduce new words such as stripe
and polka dot. Can your child find other striped or dotted things in your home?

he shakes his head.

I’ll use blue instead.”

“but I also like blue!”
