CUT LAWQUANE
• DESERTER AND FAMILY MAN

Although proving themselves in combat was
a point of pride for the clones, those who
chose to set aside their blasters were equally
accomplished. Cut Lawquane had a key part
to play in the story of the Republic’s downfall,
despite having left the military. He eventually
married Suu Lawquane and started a family
farm on the planet Saleucami with his wife
and two adopted children, Shaeeah and Jek.
Captain Rex discovered Cut when he took
shelter in the farmer’s barn. Initially, Rex
wanted to report Cut to the army for desertion,
but Cut’s devotion to his family—and his trust
in Rex when a fragment of the war eventually
came to his door—persuaded Rex to stay quiet.

olo: A Star Wars Story was
S a unique and challenging
opportunity for the
movie’s stunt crew, which
included action designer
and 2nd unit director Brad
Allen, stunt coordinator Mark Ginther,
and fight coordinator Guillermo Grispo.

Aside from thrilling action sequences that
at times featured huge crowds and creature
costumes—and all with practical effects—
the team was also tasked with developing

different fighting styles specific to each of

the principal characters.
Guillermo Grispo and special effects
supervisor Dominic Tuohy talk us through
some of their challenges.

“Everything we do must serve the story;
the action must be character-driven,”
explains Guillermo Grispo, the fi ght
01 coordinator on Solo: A Star Wars Story

(2018). When it came to defi ning Han Solo’s
fi ghting style, Grispo and the stunt team
wove in elements of military training to
refl ect Han’s brief stint in the Imperial Army,
combined with the rougher edges he picked
up during a tough childhood on Corellia.
“Han Solo is a street fi ghter, with a mean
swing,” says Grispo. “He is opportunistic
in everything he does to counter and to

military training.

Beckett

“For Tobias Beckett, we borrowed
the fi ght mannerisms of cowboys
from the best Western fi lms,” says
Grispo. “Woody Harrelson (Beckett)
was very excited about the gunplay
for this fi lm. He put in a lot of hours
learning how to twirl the guns,
which is not that easy to do. The
two six-shooters are pretty unique,
and Woody was able to learn how
to twirl and manipulate the guns to
maximum effect in a display of very
expressive gunplay.”

Chewbacca

For Chewbacca’s style, Grispo reveals that, “Early
on, we started to think about seeing a full-on display of
Chewbacca’s power. Is he as strong as an ox, or as strong
as a bear? Once we had worked out those parameters, we
were able to develop the cinematic action.”
The stunt team took full advantage of Joonas Suotamo’s
athleticism when designing action sequences involving the
mighty Wookiee. “Joonas was very quick to pick up the
moves,” notes Grispo, “and he loved to do it. That was a
tremendous benefi t to the stunt team.”
Despite working to offer up something fresh and new
with Chewbacca for audiences to enjoy, the Solo team felt
a responsibility to ensure they maintained continuity of
body language with Peter Mayhew’s original portrayal of
the character. To do this, they closely rewatched Mayhew’s
performances in the original Star Wars trilogy, the end
result being a seamless transition between the two actors.

“The stunt team took full adv antage of Joonas

Suotamo ’s athleticism when designing action sequences

involving the mighty Wookiee.”

Masters

Of Teräs

Käsi

In Solo: A Star Wars Story, we learn that Qi’ra has
been trained in Teräs Käsi by her boss, Dryden Vos—a
practitioner of an extreme martial art that had previously
only appeared in a Star Wars videogame. A key facet of
the Teräs Käsi style is that it lends a fi ghter extreme speed
and an aptitude for anticipating strikes from an opponent.
However, beyond animated pixels, the fi ghting
style had never been truly defi ned. The Solo stunt team
therefore needed to research and create Teräs Käsi from
scratch, building its signature moves and use of weapons
before they could teach Emilia Clarke (Qi’ra) and Paul
Bettany (Dryden Vos).
The art department had designed exotic double-
bladed daggers for Vos, the likes of which the stunt team
had never seen before, so they tagged them as a Teräs
Käsi trademark weapon, as well as Qi’ra’s sword. Grispo
says: “It has a pretty unique look. It almost looks like a
fork combined with a sword, in that it has a separation
within the blade.”

remember when we were shooting the film, Dave The Star Wars films have a special place in

movie history. How do you feel about being
a part of that?
03 In a way it’s easy to be flippant about it, but these

films mean so much to people. I’ve worked with

actors who are now in their 40s and 50s who were

kids when the fi lms first came out. They’re far
more interested in my experiences on that fi lm

anything like that. It’s very interesting. I must say,
I’ve had a whale of a time. It’s lovely.

In the unlikely event Jerjerrod survived the
destruction of the Death Star, what do you
think would have happened to him?
I think he would have probably joined up with the
rebels. Maybe he would have had a conversion,
like Paul on the road to Damascus; “I’ve lived
my life all wrong by having anything to do with
Darth Vader and the Emperor,” he’d say. It would
make for a nice, rounded, Shakespearean role. He

could come back in the new films as a very, very
elderly Moff! I think that’s a good idea!
