A new report has found two women every day are dying needlessly
after a heart attack because they don’t get the same treatment as

men. It’s time to end this inequality, says Dr Kamal Chitkara

It’s a huge misconception that heart disease only afects men.
Historically, more men may have been diagnosed with CHD,

LOWER YOUR RISK
While this may sound scary, there’s a lot you can do to tackle
CHD (see our tips on the following page). One of the most
efective is to reduce high blood pressure. It’s called the
‘silent killer’ because 90 per cent of patients have no obvious
symptoms. It’s thought that 2.5million women in the UK
have undiagnosed high blood pressure, so ask your GP to
check your numbers.
Reducing your cholesterol is also important, but don’t
focus on this single risk factor. Even if you have normal
cholesterol levels, you can still develop CHD and have a
heart attack. Your family history, diet and smoking all

cocktail of risk factors, not just cholesterol.
If you think you’re having a heart attack, call 999 straight
away. Many women feel they should be invincible, pushing
through their symptoms or hoping they’ll go away, but this is
the worst thing to do. Taking action as soon as possible could
help stop you becoming an unnecessary statistic.

STEPS TO PREVENTION
You may not be able to prevent misdiagnosis, but lifestyle
changes can reduce or eliminate common risk factors.
STOP SMOKING Women who smoke have three times the
risk of heart attack compared with women who have never
lit up, while men have only twice the risk.
CUT DOWN THE CAVA/WINE/GIN Excess alcohol can
raise your cholesterol, as well as increasing your chances
of developing other conditions that make high cholesterol
more likely, such as weight gain and high blood pressure.
EAT LIKE A MEDITERRANEAN A 2016 study

‘Six years ago, I came back from Australia with a lingering chest infection. My GP sent me for
tests and I was diagnosed with asthma. Later, I started getting out of breath and noticed tingles down my
right arm. My GP ran a 24-hour blood pressure check, which didn’t reveal anything serious. I left work in
January 2016 and returned to Australia for a holiday. At first my symptoms eased off, but the breathing
troubles and tingling returned, and I felt a pressure on my chest while lying down. The next day, I couldn’t
breathe properly, and felt like I was in labour! My sister took me to A&E, where I asked a nurse if I was having
a heart attack. She said yes, a big one. Three of my four main arteries were blocked and I needed bypass
surgery. The team said I’d probably had angina for years, but due to my age and the fact that my symptoms
could be otherwise explained, heart disease was never picked up. My GP at home was amazed – I probably
didn’t complain enough. I want all women with similar symptoms to get themselves checked out.’

the heart health of 112 women, average age 33, using seven measures to give them a heart health
score. This score was calculated based on factors like whether they smoked, their activity levels, diet,
much and when they ate. Most women ate something after 6pm but those who consumed a greater
proportion of their daily calories after this time were more likely to have higher blood pressure,
higher BMI and poorer long-term control of blood sugar. A late nibble, it seems, is fine, but your
heart may prefer you to keep the bulk of your meals earlier.

350g spaghetti
1 onion, thinly sliced
350g passata
1 carrot, peeled and thinly sliced
2 sprigs of thyme
2 bay leaves
150g tempeh, chopped
1 garlic clove, chopped
1 litre water
2 pinches of salt
2 pinches of pepper
Grated vegetarian parmesan, to serve

Put all the ingredients except the parmesan
in a casserole dish and cook for approximately
15 minutes over a medium heat, stirring regularly.
Serve with the grated vegetarian parmesan.

Risotto primavera

Serves 4
Prep 10 mins, cook 30 mins
20g butter
2 tbsp olive oil
250g arborio rice
2 shallots, finely chopped
250ml white wine
1 vegetable stock cube
750ml water
2 pinches of salt
2 pinches of pepper
Zest of 1 lemon
400g green asparagus, cut
into 2cm segments
50g rocket
100g frozen peas
50g grated vegetarian parmesan,
plus extra to serve
4 sprigs of dill, snipped, to serve

1 Melt the butter in a 30cm frying pan with the
olive oil. Add the arborio rice and chopped
shallots. Sauté for 3 minutes, stirring.
2 Add the white wine and stock cube, then allow
the wine to evaporate, stirring. Add the water, salt,
pepper, half the lemon zest and the asparagus.
Cook for 20 minutes, stirring regularly.
3 Add the rocket, peas and vegetarian parmesan.
Cook for a further 5 minutes, stirring. Serve with
the reserved lemon zest, parmesan and dill.

Serves 4
Prep 5 mins, cook 15 mins
350g rigatoni
1 × 400g can chickpeas, drained
1 × 400g can chopped tomatoes
50g green olives, pitted
1 tbsp dried oregano
1 pinch of chilli powder
2 tbsp olive oil
1 onion, thinly sliced
800ml water
2 pinches of salt
2 pinches of pepper
Grated vegetarian cheese, to serve

Put all the ingredients except the cheese
in a 26cm casserole dish and cook for
approximately 15 minutes over a medium heat,
stirring regularly. Serve with the grated cheese.

Baked eggs and barley with peppers, greens and goat’s cheese


Yasmin Fahr, author of Keeping It Simple, says:
‘I prefer orange and red peppers to green, but mix
and match to your preferred taste. Baked eggs are
easy, gorgeous, and you can bring the pan to the table
or eat solo out of the pan, if that’s your style.’

Serves 2, 4 for sharing
Prep 10 minutes, cook 30 minutes
2 tbsp olive oil
1 medium red onion, diced
2 orange and red peppers, diced
300g baby plum tomatoes, halved
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
½ tsp dried red chilli flakes
200g barley
900ml low-salt vegetable stock or water
150g leafy greens such as kale or chard,
leaves removed from stems and cut into
2.5cm ribbons
Zest and juice of 2 lemons
4 eggs
75g goat’s cheese, crumbled
15g parsley leaves and fine stems, roughly
chopped, for sprinkling

1 Heat the oil in a 30cm ovenproof frying pan
with a tight-fitting lid over a medium heat until
simmering. Add the onion, peppers and
tomatoes, and season with salt and pepper.
2 Cook, stirring frequently, until everything has
softened and the tomatoes have started to blister,
about 5 minutes. Add the chilli flakes, stirring
constantly until fragrant, about 30 seconds.
3 Add the barley and toast for about 1 minute,
then add the stock and a pinch more salt and
cover. Raise the heat to bring to a vigorous boil,
then remove the lid and adjust the heat to
maintain an active simmer. Cook uncovered until
most of the water has been absorbed and the
barley is just tender, about 15 minutes, stirring
every few minutes to ensure nothing sticks to the
bottom. Turn on the grill with the rack 15cm from
the heat source (if your grill is inside your oven).
4 Stir the greens into the barley until they start
to wilt, then add juice from 1 lemon. Using a
wooden spoon, create four wells in the barley
and crack one egg into each of them.
5 Crumble the cheese all over and place under
the grill until the egg whites are set and the yolks
are runny, about 5–6 minutes. Once the time gets
close, check on the eggs every 30 seconds by
jiggling the pan to see if the whites are firm or still
loose. Top with lemon zest, pepper and parsley,
and squeeze the remaining lemon juice over.

Garlicky charred greens
with wholewheat penne


Yasmin Fahr says: ‘Cime di rapa can be a polarising
vegetable as it runs on the bitter side, but I find if
you counter it with a salty fat, aka cheese, and a
bit of acid, then it is actually quite enjoyable. Garlic
lovers, slice the garlic thinly so that you get more in
each bite. I also love cutting cubes of cheese and
wiggling them into the pasta as it cooks so they are
like little surprise nuggets when I eat it.’
Serves 4
Prep 5 mins, cook 20 mins
2 tbsp olive oil
1 shallot, thinly sliced
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
2 garlic cloves, thinly sliced or grated
½ tsp dried red chilli flakes
1 litre water
500g dried wholewheat or farro penne
600g cime di rapa, cut into 5cm pieces, or
300g chard or cavolo nero, leaves removed
from stems and cut into 2.5cm ribbons
45g grated vegetarian parmesan,
plus more to serve
Handful of cheese, such as mozzarella or
cheddar, cut into small dice (optional)
Zest of 1 lemon

1 Heat the oil in a 30cm ovenproof frying pan
over a medium heat until simmering. Add the
shallot with a pinch of salt and cook until
softened, about 3 minutes. Add the garlic and
a pinch or more of chilli flakes, stirring constantly
until fragrant but not browned, about 1 minute.
2 Pour the water into the frying pan, raising the
heat to reach a vigorous boil, then add the pasta
and more salt. Cook until the pasta is al dente
– about 2 minutes less than the package
instructions – and stirring every few minutes to
ensure nothing sticks to the bottom of the pan,
about 10 minutes. Keep tasting it as it gets
closer to being done.
3 Turn on the grill to high. Place an oven rack
15cm from the heat source (if your grill is inside
your oven). Stir in the cime di rapa, then top with
the grated parmesan. (Here is where you’d add
the little cheese nuggets, if using.)
4 Place under the grill until the cheese has
melted and turned a light golden hue and the
cime di rapa is starting to brown – about
2–3 minutes, depending on your grill.
5 Remove, top with the lemon zest and more
cheese, if desired.

The days of dodging mushy florets in
soggy school dinners are long gone – now
ream-coloured, dome-shaped plants, encased in cauliflower is on-trend, nutritious and tasty

plant is named, literally translates as ‘stem’ and inspired the
English term ‘cole crop’, which refers to caulilowers and other
brassicas, including cabbage, broccoli, Brussels sprouts and
kale. Although white caulilowers are instantly recognisable,
you can occasionally ind green and purple ones, too.
Traditionally, they’ve been seen as a fairly commonplace
vegetable, but caulilowers have had a trendy resurgence in
recent years, due to their nutritional beneits and versatility
in vegetarian cooking. They have a fairly innocuous lavour,
but could be described as slightly nutty, or bitter, and can
release a sulphurous smell on cooking. And while you might
associate the pale florets with soggy school dinners, learning
to love caulilower could open you up to a host of beneits.
One portion (100g) lightly cooked provides 73 per cent of
our daily vitamin C target, and is a source of vitamins K, B6
and folate – but don’t overcook it as this will destroy most
of the vitamin C. It’s low in calories and provides ibre, which
can help increase feelings of fullness. Pale, even-coloured
heads and crisp, green leaves are good indicators of whether
your caulilower has been freshly picked, so examine it
carefully at your greengrocers or supermarket before buying.

HOW TO USE T
I
Eat lorets raw in a salad, or dunked in houmous. The easiest
way to cook caulilower is microwaving or steaming. Cut the
lorets from the stem and chop into even pieces. Boil or steam
for 5-10 minutes, checking the texture with a fork to avoid
the lorets getting too soft. For caulilower rice, cut away the
outer leaves, chop into chunks and blitz in a food processor,
or grate. Either stir-fry the ‘rice’, or roast on a tray, drizzled
with oil. To make caulilower steaks, cut of the stem so the
head sits lat, and slice horizontally at 2cm intervals. Drizzle
with olive oil, fry both sides until charred, and season.
WORKS WELL WITH
Due to its mild lavour, caulilower works in a range of dishes.
Add garlic and parsley to cauli rice, or drizzle lemon juice over
steaks before cooking, then season with herbs and chilli lakes
to enhance their charred lavour. Also add lorets and chickpeas
to a veggie curry, where they’ll take on the spices of the dish.
