Down by the water’s edge,
I fill my cup with sand—

Tip it over quickly.
Slip away the cup.

“What are you two doing?” asked Arizona.
Tex quickly covered up something.
“It’s a secret,” said Indi. “You have to wait for
your birthday to find out!”
“You’ll never guess!” said Tex.
“Hmm,” said Arizona. She smiled. “If I do, will
you tell me now?”
“OK,” said Indi. “But you’ll never guess!”

“Let’s see,” said Arizona. “Is it a rainbow-colored rabbit?”
“No,” said Tex.
“Is it the world’s smallest elephant?”
“Nope,” said Indi.
“I give up,” said Arizona. “May I please open it now?”
“You have to wait!” Tex and Indi said at the exact same time.

Della and her friends are getting ready to go to the lake.
But it’s raining! “Oh no! Look at all that rain!” says Lucy.
“We can’t go to the lake. We will get wet!” says Molly.
Della looks out the window. She sees a street vendor
selling umbrellas. “Come on,” she says. “We can buy
umbrellas. Then we won’t get wet.”
12 TM July 2017
The three friends
pick up their purses
and head outside.
“Good morning,”
says Della. “I’d like

The vendor gives

“I’d like a green umbrella,” says Lucy.

Meera and Kiran
Meera and Kiran’s friends, Nikhil and Tanya, had come over
to play.
“Come, let’s play outside!” said Meera.
When they opened the door, it was raining.
“Oh no!” the children said.
“Why aren’t you playing outside?” Pa asked.
“When the rain stops, we will play outside,” Meera said.
“When the rain stops, we will play football,” Tanya said.
“When the rain stops, Ginger will run,” Kiran said.
“When the rain stops, we will play hide-and-seek!” Nikhil
said.
“When the rain stops, we will have fun!” Meera said.
“But you don’t have to
wait for the rain to stop
to have fun!” Pa said.
“Let’s first put on our
raincoats,” Pa continued.
The kids wore their
raincoats while Pa
covered Ginger with a
plastic bag.
Ginger looked funny!
July 2017 TM 21
The garden was full of puddles.
“Let’s play Splish-Splosh!” Pa said.
They had to jump into the puddles and see who could
splash the most!
Meera, Kiran, Nikhil, and Tanya jumped into a puddle each.
Water splashed everywhere. What a fun game that was!
Pa made paper boats. When he put them in the water
flowing down the garden, the boats raced away. The children
ran after them. Only Ginger caught one of them!
22 TM July 2017
“Children!” Ma called. “Come and eat!”
As soon as they finished eating, they jumped up.
“Where are you going?” Ma asked.
“To play in the rain,” they said.
“But it has stopped raining,” Ma said.
“Oh no!” the children said and sat down.
“Why aren’t you playing?” Pa asked.
“When it starts raining again, we will! It’ so much fun!” the
kids said.
Ginger barked.
Yes, playing in the rain was fun!

Little Bunny and his friends decided to put on
a talent show. “I’ll play my harmonica,” he said.
Mouse piped up. “I can sing a song.”
“I can dance,” said Raccoon.
“And I can tell jokes,” said Mole.
26 TM July 2017
Squirrel sighed. “I can’t
sing or dance or tell jokes
very well. And I can’t play an
instrument. I guess you won’t
want me in the show.”
“Of course we want you,”
said Little Bunny. “You are
going to be the most important
part of the show.”
Everybody helped build a stage for the show.
July 2017 TM 27
Little Bunny was the first to perform.
He played his favorite song on his
harmonica. Squirrel clapped and clapped.
When Mouse finished singing “Twinkle, Twinkle,
Little Star,” Squirrel shouted, “Bravo!”
28 TM July 2017
Raccoon did her dance and Squirrel cheered.
Mole told a joke and Squirrel
laughed so hard he got the hiccups.
July 2017 TM 29
When the show was over, Little Bunny said,
“Thanks for being part of the show, Squirrel.”
“Me?” said Squirrel. “I didn’t do anything.”
“You sure did,” said Little Bunny. “You were
the best audience ever!”
