Heroes and anti-heroes take the
stage in Empire Ascendant and
Doctor Aphra!
Star Wars: Empire Ascendant
Marvel’s Star Wars series may have recently
wrapped its multi-year run with its 75th issue,
but hold your fathiers—those storylines aren’t
quite done yet! Star Wars: Empire Ascendant is
a 56-page epic anthology, acting as an epilogue
to the events of the Marvel Comics run while
setting the stage for new adventures beginning
in early 2020.
Catching up with several storylines, the one-
shot first sets its sights on the Rebels, digging

in on chilly Hoth. But how long can Luke, Leia,
and Han Solo remain hidden from their enemies
in the Empire and the underworld? In story
two, Darth Vader’s efforts to locate the Rebels
have come up dry. Could the dark side of the
Force guide him to young Skywalker, or will it

mire the Dark Lord in the conflicts of his past?
The issue also sees the unstoppable Beilert
Valance take on a dangerous mission that could
put the entire Rebellion in peril, and concludes
with a look to the past and the future as we see
how Doctor Aphra has touched the lives of the
people in her life, and the entire galaxy.
Featuring the talents of writers Charles
Soule, Greg Pak, Si Spurrier, and Ethan Sacks,
and artists Luke Ross, Roland Boschi, Paolo
Villanelli, and others, Empire Ascendant is in
stores on December 18.

in Doctor Aphra #40, the conclusion to the 4-part “Rogue’s End” storyline,
intriguingly teased with the tagline “All good things must come to an end”!

Could this be the Aphra’s final battle? It certainly looks that way, as a vengeful
Vader stalks her through the shadows of an ancient temple. Only one of the
combatants will leave in one piece! Doctor Aphra #40 comes courtesy of writer
Si Spurrier and artist Caspar Wijngaard and is on sale on December 11.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

RISE AND SHINE

long time ago,
A in a galaxy
far, far away, a
great adventure
took place. It
has taken nine
movies for this story of good
versus evil to unfold, spanning
three eras of conflict linked by

the trials and tribulations of a
single family—the Skywalkers.
There is another story, of
course—the behind-the-scenes
history of how these movies came
to be made. Beginning with an
idea for a space fantasy devised by

a young filmmaker named George
Lucas, many more creative minds
have since lent their talents to
bringing Star Wars to the big screen,
across three trilogies and more than
42 years.
While new Star Wars tales,
and indeed sagas, will no doubt
continue to entertain generations
of fans for decades to come, The
Rise of Skywalker brings the story
that started it all to a close, and
those involved in making the
final chapter felt the weight of

expectation upon their soldiers.
“It’s amazing to think that in
1977 George created something that
would still resonate with people
today. So, to think we’re creating
the story that basically brings the
saga to a conclusion, there is a huge
responsibility associated with that,”
says Lucasfilm president Kathleen

Kennedy.
“There was certainly a lot to
consider, as a fi lmmaker,” admits
director J.J. Abrams, who reignited
the Star Wars saga with 2015’s
The Force Awakens and returns to
complete what he started with The
Rise of Skywalker. “It’s not just the
end of three movies, but rather the
end of nine movies, and we wanted
to make the conclusion that both
the saga and the fans deserve.”

Taking this scenario as their starting point,

their contingent are forced to step up and take

To then have someone offer Tam the
opportunity to become the thing she’s always
wanted—to be a pilot—provided the writers
with a logical reason as to why she might look
elsewhere for a new group to align herself with.
It’s a compelling arc, and for a character to
willingly join the bad guys is new ground to
explore in the Star Wars mythology.
“Tam’s background—her grandfather worked
for the Empire—means that she doesn’t view the
Empire as bad,” Ridge adds about Tam’s view of
the galaxy. “They helped her family out, and in
04 her eyes, the First Order are essentially police

officers; law enforcement that she can get behind.
And then you have characters like Tierny, who
was very manipulative, and she recognizes a
weakness in what Tam is feeling. She was hurt by
her friends, so as far as Tierny is concerned this
is an opening to recruit her. It has allowed us to
bring more depth to these characters.”
For actor Suzie McGrath, Tam’s dilemma is an
incredible twist for her to perform. “It’s exciting.
We’ve never seen how a normal girl like Tam gets
recruited into the First Order before. For me, that
is really interesting.”
It also meant that her Season Two recording
sessions felt like she was working on a whole
new series, surrounded by the show’s cast of
allegiance to the First Order. At the end of the First Order characters she had not worked with

In examining Tam’s trajectory, Portillo says,
“In Season One, Tam looks towards Yeager as a

Christopher Sean says Kaz’s growth this season

revolves around finding his friend, and perhaps

getting her to come back to fight the good fi ght.
“He doesn’t want to give up on family, and
he considers Team Fireball family,” Sean says.
“And he never wants to give up on Tam. There’s
frustration in the fact that she is not listening.
She’s making emotional decisions, and he feels
like if she would just listen to him then none of
this would be happening. We could all be happy.”
Of course, Kaz has made plenty of decisions

Continuity Connections 07
Because the timeline of Star Wars Resistance
intertwines with events in The Last Jedi and
onwards into those of The Rise of Skywalker, the
writers found themselves in the unique position
of having to create a show that worked within
the narrative of the cinematic output of movie
directors Rian Johnson and J.J. Abrams. Portillo
explains they were kept in the loop of both
movies during writers’ conferences, which took
place a year in advance of each fi lm’s release.
“We have a roadmap that was set up,” explains
Portillo, “And we have continuity reviews with
the Lucasfilm story group to make sure that we

maintain continuity, and that our stories stay
within what the stories are so that we don’t stray 08
beyond what J.J. is expecting, or what Dave Filoni
is expecting. In any event, we can always change
episode dialogue up to the last minute.”
Another by-product of having their stories
aligned so closely with those of the movies was
the voice cast were able to work with some of
their big screen counterparts, like Oscar Isaac,
who reprises his Poe Dameron role for Resistance.
Christopher Sean recalls one of his favorite
memories on Resistance was getting the call to
head to New York City to record a voice session
with Isaac for the episodes in which their
characters cross paths. “I spoke to my agent who

In a saga steeped in mystery, deceit, and intrigue, it’s no wonder that
masks—both actual and metaphorical—have come to play such a

THE DARKEST
OF KNIGHTS
Star Wars mask designs have
been vividly infl uenced by the
art and design of East Asia, but
there is a notable counterpoint
to this, and it’s found in the
aesthetic of the Knights of Ren;
the fearsome warriors whose
appearance projects a sense of
confi dence and invulnerability.
In the medieval era, visored
helmets evolved dramatically
across Europe, and those worn
by the Knights of Ren evoke the
particular tradition of German
Gothic armor of the Sixteenth
Century. Typically, up to this

shattered form echoes the remnants
of Vader’s.
Like Anakin Skywalker before
him, Kylo Ren is a petulant young
man hiding behind a mask that he
uses to project what is really driving
him. Ren’s mask provokes us to
consider the self-image he wants
to project, and in this respect its
function very powerfully connects
to classical ancient Greek drama
in which the mask is known as
the prosopon. It is from this word,
when translated into Latin, that
we arrive at the word persona. As
the events of Star Wars: The Rise of
Skywalker (2019) unfold, Ren’s mask
is reconstructed, now marked with
vivid red scars where its fragments
have been fused together. J.J.
Abrams revealed that these jagged
lines were intended as a visual
representation of Ren’s fractured
persona, and that the “mask doesn’t
ultimately hide him, and his
behavior is revealed.”

Truths hidden behind masks are
an essential element in the allure of
Star Wars storytelling. In the book
Star Wars: The Magic of Myth, the
point is made that the fi lms have
been able to, “open our hearts to the
dimension of mystery in our own

of stories and their audiences to
project onto them. How we respond
to the mysteries and functions of
masks says as much about us as they
do about the characters who lurk
behind them.
