Welcome to
Corfu and the
Ionian Islands
With beautiful beaches, magnificent natural wonders and
plentiful sunshine, the Ionian Islands offer a Mediterranean
getaway like no other, whether you’re seeking a beach
holiday, a short break or a hiking trip. With Eyewitness
Top 10 Corfu and the Ionian Islands, they’re yours to explore.
Elegant Corfu Old Town, the spectacular Achílleion Palace and the
wildlife haven of Korisíon Lagoon are just some of the must-see
sights of Corfu. The neighbouring islands of Paxí and Antipaxí, with
sandy beaches, picturesque towns and turquoise waters, are sublime.
Highlights of Lefkáda include scenic villages like Nikiana, tiny offshore
islands and charming Lefkáda Town, with its labyrinth of narrow
streets lined with colourful homes. For the more adventurous, there
are stunning waterfalls at Nydrí and windsurfing courses at Vasilikí.
Neighbouring Kefalloniá is famous for its atmospheric capital,
Argostóli, and its natural wonders: Mýrtou Bay, Drogkaráti Cave and
Melissáni Lake are sights not to be missed. Pretty Ithaki, believed
to be where the legendary King Odysseus lived, lies off its shores.
Completing the archipelago is Zákynthos, an island with a coastline so
spectacular that it has appeared on the cover of countless brochures.
Who could forget the iconic Navagio Beach with its shipwreck, or the
fabulous Blue Caves?
Whether you are visiting the Ionians for a weekend or a week, our
Top 10 guide brings together the best of everything they have to offer.
You’ll find tips throughout, from top museums to the best restaurants,
along with six easy-to-follow itineraries designed to help you visit a
clutch of sights in a short space of time. Add inspiring photography
and detailed maps, and you’ve got the essential pocket-sized travel
companion. Enjoy the book, and enjoy Corfu and the Ionian Islands.

Palaio Frourio,
Corfu Town
Once home to almost 2,000 people, the Palaio Frourio (Old
Fortress) stands on a peninsula jutting eastward into the Ionian
sea. Founded by the Byzantines in the 11th century, the fortress
was strengthened in the 14th century by the Venetians. Its defences
withstood Ottoman sieges in 1537, 1571 and 1716. Barracks, a
military hospital and other buildings were added during the 19th-
century British occupation. Known to the ancient Greeks as Koryfo,
the site lent its name to Corfu Town and eventually the whole island.

Mon Repos Estate, Corfu
With its extensive lush gardens set on the hill of Analipsis at Kanóni,
the Mon Repos Estate is a tranquil haven. Created during British rule
by the second Lord High Commissioner of the Ionians, Sir Frederick
Adam, the estate later became the summer home of the Greek royal
family, and the birthplace of Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh. It is
also famous for being the site of Palaeopolis, the island’s ancient city,
and visitors can see the remains of ancient buildings in the grounds.

This Neo-Classical palace was built in the late 1890s for the Empress

The Korisíon Lagoon in southern Corfu is a sublimely tranquil spot.
A protected area, it is separated from the Ionian Sea by sand dunes
dotted with juniper bushes. The beaches of Agios Georgios, Issos and
Halikounas are on its shores, while an ancient cedar forest provides a
backdrop. The large brackish lagoon and its surroundings provide
habitats for wildlife, trees and flowers, including orchids and a rare
species of lily. It is an important stop for migrating birds from Africa
to Europe; you may also see sandpipers, ducks, seagulls, swans
and, if you’re lucky, Scops owls or buzzards flying overhead.
