Charlie was helping Tex and Indi get ready for their

first day of school.
“No, Charlie!” said Indi, scooting him off her special

first-day-of-school outfit.

Tex and Indi

“No, Charlie!”
said Tex, taking

Charlie out

of his new
backpack.

“Hmm,” said

Mom, smiling.

“It looks as

if somebody
wants to go to

kindergarten

with you.”

“Aww. Sorry,

Charlie,” said
Tex. “Kitties

aren’t allowed

in school. But

we promise

to tell you all
about it when

we get home.”

September 2018 TM 7

After school, Tex and Indi rushed home to tell

Charlie all about their first day.

“Our teacher, Ms. French, is so nice,” Indi told

Charlie. “I got to water our tree.”
“I played with my new friend Alton at recess,”

Tex added.

8 TM September 2018

“And we all drew pictures of our families,” said Indi.
“Look, Charlie. There you are.”

Charlie hopped right on top of Indi’s drawing and purred.

“I think he likes it,” said Tex.

Indi gave

Charlie a kiss

on the nose
and giggled.

“Me, too.”

One morning, Meghna was putting on her shoes.

Then she stopped. “Look, Mom,” she said. “There’s a

hole in the toe!”
“You’ve grown—and so have your feet!” said Mom.

“Let’s go shopping for shoes this afternoon.”

12 TM September 2018

When they entered the store, Meghna saw shelves full

of shoes. A friendly lady in the children’s section measured

Meghna’s foot to figure out her size.
First, Meghna tried on some black shoes. Next, she tried

on some red ones. Soon, there were shoeboxes everywhere.

September 2018 TM 13

“Which shoes would you like?” Mom asked.

Meghna looked at all the shoes. “I can’t decide,” she said.

Then she thought for a moment. She picked up her
old shoes, the ones with the hole. “I want shoes like

these,” she said.

14 TM September 2018

Meghna beamed as they left the store. In her hands
was a box with her new shoes. They were just like her

old shoes, but her new pair didn’t have a single hole.

Spunky and Pepe were walking in the rain forest when they
saw something on the ground. It was smooth and white.

“What is that?” asked Spunky.

“It is an egg,” said Pepe.

20 TM September 2018

As they tiptoed closer, they heard a crack. A thin line

appeared down the shell. The egg was hatching! A long

snout with tiny teeth poked out of the shell.

“What is that?” asked Spunky.
“It is a mouth,” said Pepe.

September 2018 TM 21

Then the crack grew bigger. Soon they could see the
baby’s head.

“What is that?” asked Spunky.

“It is a head,” said Pepe.

22 TM September 2018

The baby finally
crawled out of the shell.

It had four legs, a long

tail, and a long body.

“What is that?”
asked Spunky.

“It is a crocodile!”

said Pepe.

The baby looked up at them and then ran to the water.
“Welcome to the world, baby crocodile!” said Spunky.

“Good-bye, baby crocodile!” said Pepe.

Come on, everybody, today’s the day.

Let’s head outside for the Trash-Truck Parade!
Rumble, rumble down the street,

Here come the trucks for us to meet.

26 TM September 2018

First comes recycling in the truck that’s blue.

It takes used stuff to make something new.
Bottles and cans and paper and tins,

The truck lifts it all up, then dumps it all in.

September 2018 TM 27

Next comes the driver in the truck that’s green.

He puts our old plants in the mulch machine.
Our grass and leaves and flower clippings

Become compost and mulch and new wood chippings.

28 TM September 2018

Last comes the garbage truck, the truck that’s gray.

It moves our junk to the landfill today.
All our scraps and rubbish and trash

Go up in the truck with a great big CRASH!

September 2018 TM 29

Toot, toot! The garbage workers honk and wave.

We jump up and down and shout, “Hooray!
See you next week,” we smile and say.

“We’ll be back outside on Trash-Truck Day.”
