Las Palmas
Las Palmas can date its beginnings from the day Juan Rejón
landed at La Isleta and earmarked the area for his settlement
(see p38). The arrival of Christopher Columbus, the increase
in maritime traffic, and, finally, the construction of the port,
guaranteed success as a trading hub. Today Las Palmas is the
Canary Islands’ biggest city, with a vibrant ethnic mix, reflecting
its position as a crossroads between Africa, Europe and Latin
America. A paradise for shopaholics, Las Palmas also has leafy
suburbs and quiet cobbled streets, all crowned by Playa de Las
Canteras, one of the world’s top city beaches.

The north is as far removed from the stereotype of the
Canary Islands as is possible. The humid climate here
blesses the ravines with a layer of lush green vegetation,
while rough seas crash against the stony beaches.
It’s not dream territory for sunbathers or swimmers,
but hikers and surfers are certainly well catered for.
The cuisine consists of warming meat dishes in the
highlands and seafood platters on the coast. The region
is also rich in aboriginal remains, since Gáldar was the

For years, the rugged central region could be traversed only by
a series of tough paths, known as caminos reales. Today, hardy
hikers continue to trek these old routes, though driving has long
since ousted walking as the main way of getting about. The west
of the island, however, remains largely unvisited and unspoiled.
The plunging hollows nature has sliced from the towering cliffs

this breathtaking region is on foot. Just three scary stretches of

The east of the island may appear to be
something of an industrial wasteland, but
away from the GC-1 motorway lie some of the
island’s oldest towns, harbouring delightful
historical centres. But the area’s history
doesn’t start with the Conquest. This was the
most densely populated region in Guanche
times, a fact made clear by the varied
aboriginal settlements scattered throughout
the windswept hill tops and jagged ravines.
