HONORING OUR MOURNING DREAMS
Dreams occurring before and after the death of a loved one often play an essential role in the mourning
process. Vivid dream images of the dead function are mediators between the "underworld" of the
unconscious and the "upper world" of consciousness. Dream images can help the wounded psyche
come to terms with loss, and dream symbols point to a new relationship between ego and Self and a
transformed orientation to life.
In this workshop, we will examine the so-called “stages of grief,” the objective/subjective interpretation of
grief dreams, and the numinous nature of “visitation dreams.” Examples of dreams from Jungian and
other literature will be cited, but there will also be time for individual reflection, journaling, and group
discussion. Please bring writing material and be prepared to reflect on your own grief dreams. Suggested
reading: C. G. Jung, Memories, Dreams, Reflections (1961), sections entitled "Visions" and "On Life
After Death;" Susan Olson, By Grief Transformed: Dreams and the Mourning Process (Spring, 2010);

Susan Olson, LCSW, a 1992 graduate of the C.G. Jung Institute of Zurich, has worked as a psychotherapist and
analyst for 35 years. She has a B.A. from Smith College, an M.A. from the University of Wisconsin and an M.S.W.
from the University of Georgia. A member of the Inter-Regional Society of Jungian Analysts, she is on the faculty of
the Memphis-Atlanta Jungian Seminar and is President of the Georgia Association of Jungian Analysts.
Susan is the author of several articles and the book By Grief Transformed: Dreams and the Mourning Process
(Spring Journal Books, 2010), which chronicles her grief dreams following the death of her daughter.
