W H AT I S T H E U P TOW N A S S O C I AT I O N ?
The Uptown Association is a member-based nonprofit trade association that promotes Uptown as a safe,
prosperous, accessible, and well-maintained and environmentally responsible commercial and residential area.
Our goal is to improve the economic stability and vitality of Uptown and to celebrate and sustain its unique spirit
and sense of community.

W H AT D O E S T H E U P TOW N A S S O C I AT I O N D O ?
The Association serves in a variety of capacities to over 700 businesses, organizations, individuals, and five
neighborhood associations within Uptown’s perceived boundaries. We focus on economic development, business
promotion, community and governmental affairs, resource opportunities, education, partnerships with other local
groups, and membership benefits and services.

H OW I S T H E U P TOW N A S S O C I AT I O N O R G A N I Z E D ?
A member-elected volunteer Board of Directors representing large and small businesses, the nonprofit sector,
residents, and other community interests governs the Uptown Association. In addition to the Board of Directors,
the Association has several working and active committees that meet monthly, or as needed, and are open to
the public to join- Art Fair, Community Affairs, Events and Programming, Finance, Marketing, and Membership.
In addition to the work that UA committees do to support our mission, the organization depends on mutually
beneficial partnerships.

H OW D I D T H E U P TOW N A S S O C I AT I O N S TA RT ?
The Uptown Association was formed in 1975 as the Hennepin Lake Improvement Association by approximately
ten Uptown business and property owners. Since then, it was grown to an average of over 175 members. The
Association welcomes diversity of all kinds and advocates the greater benefit of the entire Uptown community.

ABOUT THE ART FAIR

53 years ago, a group of local business owners felt that an outdoor arts and crafts festival could be just what Uptown
needed to stimulate consumer traffic. What started in 1963 as a small event with artists propping their precious works
for sale against the curb, has grown into a nationally recognized, top ranked, fine arts festival attracting nearly 400,000
people in just three days. The Uptown Association took over production of the Uptown Art Fair in 1973.
