Conditions of Competition
Format
Four-ball match play using 80% of each player’s course handicap
contested over seven 9-hole matches with one match played
between every team within each eight-team flight.
Scoring
(+1) point is awarded to a team that wins a hole while a (-1) point
is given to the losing team. Maximum number of points that can
be won or lost by a team in any individual match is 5. This rule
does NOT apply for scoring of daily cash pools. If only one member
of a team is able to start a match, the maximum number of points
that can be won or lost by a team is 3 unless his partner joins the
match before the 5th hole in the match being played. This rule does
NOT apply for scoring of daily cash pools. The second player may
join the competition after the completion of any hole but not
between holes. If both members of a team are unable to start a
match, the match is defaulted. In the event of a default, the result
will be a win/loss of 4 points except on the last day when the
defaulting team will lose 5 points; the winning team will win 4
points.
Conditions of Competition Continued
Championship Shootout
The team accumulating the highest number of plus (+) points will
be the winner in each flight.
The winners of each flight will compete in the Championship
Shootout Saturday following lunch. The shootout will be played
over two holes, the team with the lowest total two hole net score
will be crowned Champions of The Quahog Classic.
All six teams will compete together. The format of play will be
Ocean Course Hole #1 Four-ball
Ocean Course Hole #9 Aggregate
Players will receive their tournament handicaps as they fall.
Tied teams will play the same format as the shootout in a sudden
death playoff beginning on hole #1.
Tie Breaks
In case of a tie for 1st place in a flight, there will be a sudden
death playoff beginning at the 1st hole of the Ocean Course and
continuing on successive holes until a winner is determined
(subject to change due to weather/course conditions). The
format will be four-ball of the low ball in the group.
Tie breaks for second will be determined by the result of the tied
teams’ head-to-head match, vs the flight winner, then vs 4th, 5th,
6th, 7th.
Conditions of Competition Continued
Handicap
Handicaps will be verified by the New Seabury Golf
Professional Staff and New Seabury Handicap Committee. The
Handicap Committee reserves the right to adjust any player’s
handicap based on past performance or if the player has not
submitted at least 5 scores since the 2017 Quahog Classic.
Each competitor’s course handicap is derived as follows:
Every competitor’s handicap index will be sourced from the July
15th handicap revision. Using the Ocean Course slope rating(s),
the handicap index is converted into a course handicap. The
course handicap is then adjusted to 80% of its total value.
The competition handicap is divided in half for 9-hole matches
and rounded to the nearest half stroke. In each match, handicap
strokes are determined off of the lowest handicap player in the
foursome. Stroke holes will fall as indicated on the Ocean Course
scorecard.
The maximum allowable difference in the course handicap
between a member and guest is 10. For any pairing with a course
handicap delta greater than 10, the higher-handicap player’s will
be adjusted down to within 10 strokes of their partner.
The Golf Shop will post all scores for this event for both members
and guests as tournament scores.
Competition Tees
Flight A will compete from the Blue Tees
Flights B will compete from the Blue/White Combo Tees
C through F will compete from the White Tees
Black Tee Option – Players with handicaps + age that total 85 or higher may
elect to play the Black Tees. Handicap will be adjusted based on the
difference in the course rating of competitors. Must notify the golf shop
prior to the start of the event 12:00pm on Thursday.
