From The Publisher

Welcome!

We are so happy and grateful that you are here!

We each have so much to be thankful for. Even if we are being
challenged by physical ailments, financial worries, relationship stresses,
or workplace drama; we each have so much that makes us blessed.
Thanksgiving and this season is such a great time to focus on what we
have, instead of what we don't have. What we have is abundant! Inside
and out.
It really is all in how we look at it. The key is to recognize what it feels
like to be positive and then to do your best, as much as you can, to be a
vibrational match to that feeling. As you are feeling it, then it has to be
your experience.
May your days unfold in the most positive and magical ways.

I write a G for “Gratitude” at the top of my page, and then I write three things that I
am grateful for. Here is what that might look like:

G
Today I am so thankful that I have time to allow great ideas to flow through me

for my new book.
Today I am super excited and grateful for the invitation to speak and sing at the

Radiating Hope Fundraiser in San Antonio, Texas.
Today I am so grateful for the beautiful, sunny day we are going to have.

Then I write a D for “Dreams,” and I write three dreams I would like to see happen in
my future. I write them as though they have already happened and I am feeling the
gratitude I would feel in that moment.

D
Today I am really thankful that my books and music are creating hope and

healing for millions of people around the world.
Today I am grateful that money is flowing freely into my life so that I can do all

the projects I am excited about doing to create positive change in the world.
Today I am so grateful that my cells are completely healthy, and I continue to be

cancer free.

I am blown away at the events that occur in my life when I am diligent about my
morning gratitude pages. It is amazing how new songs seem to just freely stream
through me, money shows up seemingly out of the blue, I get invited to speak and
sing at big events around the country. . . As Glenn Morshower said in the Foreword
for my Leap of Faith book, “We are shown time and time again that it is done unto us
according to our faith. Does this mean that we get every little thing we wish for?
Absolutely not! We are simply implementing the law of thought equals outcome.
What we focus on increases exponentially.”

At times our own light goes out and is rekindled by a spark from another person.
Each of us has cause to think with deep gratitude of those
who have lighted the flame within us.
Albert Schweitzer

Lately, in my desire to quench my thirst for knowledge and understand gratitude on a
deeper level, I am finding a lot of material that supports how being grateful on a daily

Living in Gratitude Continued

basis helps bring the things we want most in life closer to us. What I would love to
see more of is a message that supports how showing gratitude for others will also
bless us more in our own lives, and will raise the vibration of the people around us.
The deeper I go on my journey with gratitude, the more I start to wonder about its
power. What would happen if each of us were to commit to writing one note of
gratitude to someone each day, no matter what? It only takes a moment to write a
little note of thanks, and it can be hand-delivered, mailed, or sent through one of the
numerous social media outlets. What if people started acting more kindly because
they received your note, and it raised them up a notch in their own walk with
gratitude? You can write a note to a family member, a friend, a coworker, a store
clerk, a teacher . . . the list is endless.

Using the habits from my Leap of Faith book, what if we acted as if it were a global
daily requirement for every capable human being to write a note of thanks to
someone else before the day’s end? And what if we were to begin it now and then
watch as a myriad of gratitude started showing up in the world? And what if we were
to dream big and assume that in doing these daily notes of gratitude, we were
changing the vibration of love, peace, and happiness on our planet? And what if we
threw our just imagine habit into the equation and required everyone to spend time
each day thinking about a planet filled with grateful people?

When I applied for my job at East Anchorage High School in 1993, one of the
questions the principal asked me was, “What is your philosophy on discipline?” He
said he had heard that even my very large choir classes at the middle school where I
taught didn’t seem to have the typical discipline problems that tend to occur,
especially with young teenagers. I, of course, answered with the more formal
discipline policy I had in place, but then I told him the truth about why I really felt like
kids were well behaved and respectful in my classes.

I had made a commitment to write a note of gratitude to at least one student a day.
Even on super busy days, I would carve out a moment in my morning to jot a quick
note to a kid and then hand it to them at some point during the class period. The
note might say, “Just a little note to tell you how much I love having you in my class.
Thanks for always showing up. Have a great day! Love Mrs. Lidey.” Apparently,
those kids that received a note started sharing its content with their classmates,
because pretty soon it was evident that other kids were waiting for the day that they
would get their note. Because they really wanted their own special note from Mrs.
Lidey, they started showing up with enthusiasm-plus and shining their best light. And
because I saw the positive effect it was having on so many kids, it made me feel so
much more gratitude in my own day. I have run into so many students over the years
that have told me they pinned my note of thanks on their wall and that it stayed there

all the way through high school. Some still have that note tucked away in their wallet,
purse, or drawer.

I have this theory that if one person can go out of their way to show compassion,
then it will start a chain reaction of the same.
Rachel Joy Scott

I am so grateful for this opportunity to wish you all big Blessings & Miracles in your
day. I challenge each of you to lift someone up today by sharing a note of gratitude
with him or her. Please remember to share a word of thanks to anyone in your world
who is a veteran and HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

Daily Habit Action Steps

• Set your alarm for ten minutes earlier than you need to get up and just rest in
gratitude for those ten minutes.

• Buy yourself a new journal and spend ten minutes in the morning writing the three
things you’re grateful for, followed by your three dreams, and then feel those
dreams as though they have already come true.

• Choose at least one person each day to say thank you to.
• Choose at least one person each day to write a note of thanks to and either hand-

deliver it, mail it, or use social media to get it to them.

requirements as Service Pension) but who are confined to their home for

Pension with Aid and Attendance. The highest monthly benefit is
available when a wartime Veteran or surviving spouse requires the
assistance of another person to perform activities of daily living, is blind
or nearly so, or is a patient in an assisted living facility or nursing home.
This benefit, often referred to simply as "Aid and Attendance" is the most
widely known and talked-about benefit as it offers the highest possible
income.

Eligible Veterans may qualify if they:

• Are over the age of 65 and/or unemployable due to disability
• Served at least 90 straight days, at least 1 of which during active

conflict. Veterans serving post 1980 have a longer service requirement.
• Received honorable, medical or general discharge
• (and for the Aid and Attendance Benefit) are now disabled with medical

diagnosis that he/she requires assistance with 2 or more ADLs
(activities of daily living such as eating, bathing, getting dressed,
toileting, transferring and continence)

Not only may the Veteran be eligible, but the Veteran’s spouse or surviving
spouse may also be eligible.

Even better news:

• Benefit is tax-free
• Paid directly to the Veteran or Qualified Spouse
• Helps defray rising healthcare costs
• Never has to be paid back
• Law provides exemptions to help Veterans to qualify

How much is the Aid and Attendance benefit worth, you ask? Enough to make
a big difference in affording the care the Veterans need and deserve.

In order to qualify, the VA has many complicated financial requirements relating to
both income and assets. More information is available at
https://www.benefits.va.gov/pension/. Many nonprofit organizations are available
to assist Veterans and their families in completing the application process.

Having heard about these financial requirements, many Veterans and their
families mistakenly believe that they have too much to qualify for the benefits, so
they don’t even apply. What they need to know is that through the use of available
exemptions and proper planning (provided for in the law) most Veterans can
qualify for benefits without having to completely spend down all their savings
before applying.

A VA accredited attorney can advise Veterans and their families whether through
the use of estate planning including creation of something called Veterans Trusts
a Veteran could become eligible. Creating Veterans Trusts is difficult and should
only be undertaken by a VA accredited attorneys. Find an accredited attorney in
your area by going to https://www.va.gov/ogc/apps/accreditation/index.asp.

Effective October 18, 2018, there is now a 3-year look back period for transfers
into these trusts, much like the current Medicaid 5-year look-back period. It is
urgent that Veterans and their families plan ahead if it appears that mounting
health costs will soon exceed the Veteran’s income in order to avoid spending all
the family’s assets on healthcare. Act now to assist your beloved Veteran in
obtaining the benefits of our country’s gratitude.

We all thank you for your service, dear Veterans.

Their mission at Equines for Freedom:

To provide equine-assisted PTSD treatment to current and former U.S.
service members, regardless of the source of trauma or their

characterization of service, at no charge to the service member.

Ms. Lewis says, “The horses are an integral part of
treatment. They are not for riding. As prey animals,
they are highly alert and can sense anxiety. The
horses’ presence keeps the veteran grounded in the
present reality while they are working through and
reviewing past traumatic moments to reshape the
emotions tied to them.” She also states, “a thorough
examination of each individual history is completed to
identify all parts of the trauma.”

Each veteran chooses a nickname for his or her horse
to create neutrality, so the actual name of the horse
will not affect the treatment process. “This helps to
avoid coincidental associations with names that might
have an unpleasant meaning in a veteran’s past,”

Ms. Lewis said. “Our job with the EMDR is we want them to bond with the horse so
when we get into the processing of the trauma, the horse can actually nurture them
while they deal with the uglies of the past.”

Equines for Freedom has three therapist teams, and currently has the capacity to
work with up to 25 people. They have graduated eighteen veterans thus far.
What is EMDR?

According to the EMDR International Association, Eye Movement Desensitization
and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is an integrative psychotherapy approach that
has been extensively researched and proven effective for the treatment of
trauma. EMDR is a set of standardized protocols that incorporates elements from
many different treatment approaches. As EMDR is a mental health intervention, it
should only be offered by properly trained and licensed mental health clinicians.
EMDRIA does not condone or support indiscriminate uses of EMDR such as a "do-
it-yourself" virtual therapy.

At Equines for Freedom, the therapeutic team uses what is known as Equine
Assisted EMDR (EA-EMDR) which includes the horse being part of the

therapeutic process. Sarah Jenkins is the person who created the process of
EA-EMDR which was approved by EMDRIA. Sarah trained the founders and
the treatment team members of EFF. To learn more about Sarah and this

Does EMDR really work?

The EMDR International Association states:

Approximately 20 controlled studies have investigated the effects of
EMDR. These studies have consistently found that EMDR effectively
decreases/eliminates the symptoms of post-traumatic stress for the
majority of clients. Clients often report improvement in other associated
symptoms such as anxiety. The current treatment guidelines of the
American Psychiatric Association and the International Society for
Traumatic Stress Studies designate EMDR as an effective treatment for
post-traumatic stress. EMDR was also found effective by the U.S.
Department of Veterans Affairs and Department of Defense, the United
Kingdom Department of Health, the Israeli National Council for Mental
Health, and many other international health and governmental agencies.
Research has also shown that EMDR can be an efficient and rapid
treatment.

Working with ALL war veterans, starting with those who served
in Vietnam, Equines for Freedom (EFF) treats the veteran as a
whole person, not just a veteran victim of trauma. Any and all
occurrences that may have caused trauma in their lives become
part of the veterans’ experience of healing with the equines.
The horse keeps the vet in the present moment as they work
with the past to heal the trauma.

EFF has had great success with treating veterans from Vietnam, Iraq and
Afghanistan. A common theme among those in treatment is that they have
tried everything, and nothing before this has been effective. They often state
that this treatment model is the first thing that has really helped. The treatment
of these veterans has been extremely successful and therefore we are working
to expand to also treat First Responders through a separately funded program.

Thank You for Everything

By Judee Light Thank you for everything. A radical thought for some!
An unbelievable thought for some.

Thoughts and actions related to gratitude and
appreciation and thankfulness are in the air as
Thanksgiving is coming up.

It is the time of the year that I recall the story about a
Zen master named Sono who taught one simple
method of enlightenment. She advised all who came
to her to say one affirmation many times a day, under
all conditions: "Thank you for everything. I have no

Thank You for Everything continued

Most of us have been trained to question, analyze, and criticize everything we
see. But then we end up questioning, analyzing, and criticizing ourselves. And we
miss out on happiness and fulfillment.

At Thanksgiving, many of us get together with our families. Maybe old family
issues may come up and we might be tempted to fall into old patterns. Wouldn’t it
be wonderful if, as we sat with our relatives, we held in mind: "Thank you for
everything. I have no complaint whatsoever." Imagine what this Thanksgiving
would be like if we decided that, no matter how much one family member
complains about another, how much family members bugs us about doing
something they think we should do, or criticizes our kids or our spouse, we would
choose to appreciate and find the good in our loved ones. Indeed, this would
quite a Thanksgiving to remember!

"Thank you for everything. I have no complaint whatsoever." What if we simply
practiced the mantra for an entire Thanksgiving day? And then maybe one day a
week. We might start to feel so good and our lives may become so fulfilling that
we will want to turn every day into a thanks-giving day. It could happen!
Many say that the highest form of prayer is gratitude. Instead of asking Source
for what you want, start thanking Source for what you want in advance, feeling as
if you already have it.

Thank you for everything. I have no complaint whatsoever.
When you feel gratitude or appreciation or give thanks, you are in harmony with
your natural state, which is Love. In that state, you are a vibrational match to
Source. Who woul©dKna’rtenbMeahyfaiepldpy and radiate joy©thKaerenn?M!ayfield
Gratitude and appreciation are simply expressions of love—yet being grateful
and appreciating are often easier for us to do than “loving” because of our
conditioning about love . . . like “love hurts”.

As you intend to appreciate, to be grateful, you are practicing allowing, rather
than resisting. The less resistance you have and the more you allow, the better
your overall health, well-being, prosperity, relationships, and life will be. Gratitude
puts you in an expanded state of allowing where the people, things, and
experiences you desire can flow into your experience. And you’ll find that the
better it gets, the better it gets.

Because the vibration of appreciation and gratitude is a powerful connection
between you and Source, appreciating puts you in a position to receive even
clearer intuitive guidance so that you know clearly what to do in every situation.

19 | Positive Tribe Magazine

Thank You for Everything continued

Gratitude is a springboard to spiritual expansion.

You have been asking, and Source has been sending, though when the sending is
still in the invisible, you sometimes mistakenly think it is not coming. Appreciation
puts you in the practice of receiving—letting in your good.

Every time you appreciate something, every time you praise something, every time
you express gratitude for something, every time you feel good about something, you
are vibrationally communicating to Source: “More of this, please. Thank you!” You
need not even speak it out loud or write it down. Source knows your desires.
Appreciation puts you in the vibrational state of magnetic receptivity (you are a
magnet with open arms) and good things flow to you. Flow. To. You!

A Louise Hay affirmation had a profound effect on me when I first read it 25 years
ago, as I felt the truth of it. It was not a belief I was raised with . . . and that
affirmation is: I trust the process of life to bring me my highest good.

Bring me my highest good. I was raised to believe I needed to work hard and earn
whatever I wanted.

When we are in appreciation, good things flow to us and our highest good is brought
to us . . . like on a silver platter! Wow! That doesn’t mean we sit around all day
doing nothing. We do what feels good . . . and take the action we are inspired to
take.

It is becoming clearer and clearer to me that our job is to LOVE and that love is an
action word. Our j©obKairsentMoalyofievlde everything and e©veKaryreonnMeayf.ie.ld. starting with ourselves.

As we love, we are led to take loving actions and do loving things.

The more you appreciate, the better you feel . . . the better you feel, the more you
want to appreciate . . . the more you appreciate, the better it feels . . . it becomes a
victorious cycle.

Once you decide that nothing is more important than feeling good (sometimes it
takes a life-threatening illness to bring a person to this point—don’t wait for that!) . . .
and you decide to intentionally be grateful and appreciate everything and everyone,
the focus of your attention has now become the feeling of appreciation. You
establish a connection between you and what you appreciate that the Law of
Attraction can begin working on immediately, so you start receiving more things to
appreciate right away!

20 | Positive Tribe Magazine

Thank You for Everything continued

When you decide to appreciate, appreciation comes back to you. Although you
are really not looking for it to come TO you; you want the feeling of it flowing
THROUGH you.

Any time you have a challenging time appreciating others, it is a sign that you are
lacking self-appreciation.

When you are feeling appreciation, you are in the present moment, in the eternal
now. Your heart opens. You breathe more deeply. Your body relaxes.
Your mind lets go of focusing on what you don’t have and eases into what you
appreciate . . . and that feels good.

This is how people are able to heal themselves.

Appreciation also allows creative energy to flow. I remember a time I went to a
personal development seminar in Seattle . . . I felt so good about what I learned
and so appreciated my time there, that on the flight home, I felt like my mind was a
faucet turned on full blast, as the creative ideas were flowing so fast! Faster than I
could write them down!

There is even greater power when we give thanks together. The shared energy of
a group increases the transformation for each one in the group. I believe the
pilgrims at the first Thanksgiving knew this—if not consciously, intuitively.

So You Want To Be A Billionairecontinued

But not to worry, that doesn't mean you have to sacrifice everything else in your life
to become financially wealthy---perhaps you just need to redefine what “work” really
is. Personally, I "work" on lots of projects but yet I don’t toil and sweat, because I
love what I’m doing. In addition, my wife (who also happens to be my best friend) is
almost always with me, so my marriage doesn’t suffer because we're apart. If you
can find work that you’re passionate about, you’ll wake up inspired and the odds are
you’ll also be healthier and happier.

#2 – Invest Either Time, Or Money In Your OWN Dream… As I mentioned earlier,
many of the billionaires on the planet worked one or more jobs for other people
during their early days. BUT, they did it so they could afford to pursue their own
passions. They regularly invested the time to gain education by taking classes at
night or on the weekends, and also obtained knowledge by having mentors,
applying for apprenticeships, or taking positions that would help them uncover a
deeper understanding of the industry they were interested in. Typically, before a
person has money, they have the TIME…and making a wise investment of that
resource can pay huge dividends later.

#3 - You Never Fail, You Just Learn… Regardless of what you believe about the
word “fail”, billionaires seem to look at each setback simply as a lesson. Many will
even say they’ve never failed. Of course, some of those “lessons” are more costly
than others, but it’s better than the negative stigma attached to the word “fail.”
By eliminating the word “fail” from your vocabulary, you’ll put yourself in the mindset
of being a constant learner, which is proactive and moves you towards your goals
rather than having "failures" that take you away from them.

#4 - Knowledge Is Different Than Education… If you look at a list of billionaires,
many of them don’t have a great deal of formal education. In fact, David
Murdock (known as the founder of Dole Food, Inc.) didn’t graduate high school until
he was in his eighties. Now, before someone gets up in arms, I’m not insinuating
that dropping out of school is the path to becoming a billionaire. It’s simply a fact
that many of the people I researched never received a degree, although they did
prove to be life long learners and are constantly seeking knowledge that will help
them improve. My point is, a formal education is important, but knowledge that will
specifically help you in your chosen area is priceless. As my grandpa used to
say, "Learn how to learn about what you need to learn.“

#5 - You’re Never Too Young To Start… Another thing that was common amongst
most of the billionaires I studied was they started their pursuit at very young ages.

26 | Positive Tribe Magazine

So You Want To Be A Billionaire continued

And when I say young, I mean as children. Kirk Kerkorian, who’s net worth is almost
3 billion dollars started earning money for his family at the age of 9 when he
dropped out of school to become a boxer. Sheldon Adelson started selling
newspapers at the age of 12 and Ingvar Feodor Kamprad, the founder of Ikea
started selling matches at the age of 6 and by the time he turned 10 he was selling
Christmas decorations, fish, and pencils in and around his neighborhood. But, don’t
worry, starting as a child isn't a requirement to becoming a billionaire...just
ask David Duffield who became one at the age of 47.
Now, I know some of you are saying times are different and the opportunities aren’t
there…but I believe, and it’s been proven that nothing can stop someone
(regardless of age) who possesses determination, tenacity, and a dream. In fact,
some would argue there's never been a better time.
At some point in the future, there’s a good chance someone will write a post about
the new standard of becoming a “trillionaire”… and my guess is, the people who’ve
made that list will have had the same five traits we’ve just discussed...and who
knows, maybe you'll be one of the people their writing about.
As always, I wish you all #aSensationalLife.

Grateful for Being the Passenger

Sounds like fun, right? Are we there yet? continued

Well, this last time we drove up to North Carolina was because my best friend asked
me A YEAR AGO if her son got married up there, would we attend? Obviously, I said
“Yes, there is nothing lovelier than Highlands/Cashiers, North Carolina in October!”

All the way north we were consciously outrunning the violent path of Hurricane Michael
which was on a rampage from Mexico Beach, Florida to the Atlantic Ocean east of
Virginia. Our GPS, Lizzie, wanted to direct us up through Atlanta, but the weather
channel said “Stay East” so, in spite of Lizzie yelling “recalculating…make the next left
turn” when we didn’t follow her directions, I-95 became our best route! My job was to
check out Mapquest on my phone, the Weather Channel on CJ’s phone, and to
consider Lizzie barking orders on the car speaker! I’m so grateful I was the passenger
because the ultimate decision maker was my driver, or at least I let him think that!

We really wanted to take some of the more direct, smaller roads west to the mountains,
but the thought of the hurricane coming our way and not having a Hampton Inn, my
favorite, available kept us going north “on the big roads!” I-16 outside of Savannah,
Georgia, had been a terrific route for us last year when we went north, but this time it
looked like a beeline directly into Michael’s path, so we stayed on I-95 north towards
Charleston and then took I-26 west to Columbia, South Carolina and that would be our
resting place – 10 hours from home was a good enough drive for one day. So grateful
for warm chocolate chip cookies, fluffy white pillows and a huge down comforter!

Columbia looked promising when we arrived at 10:00 pm but by 6:00 am the following
morning the Weather Channel and Jim Cantore had Hurricane Michael, soon to be a
Tropical Storm Michael, bearing directly down on top of us. Go figure. We looked out
our 3rd floor window and could see the rain blowing sideways but we heard there was
going to be a lull soon and since ALL the schools and businesses in South Carolina
were closed, we figured it would be a great time to get on the highway and zoom up to
the mountains. Good thinking, at least from the traffic point of view! No one was on the
road except for the occasional 18-wheeler and a few crazy Floridians headed up to
“leaf look” or go to a destination wedding.

I’m really grateful my hubby loves to drive because throughout the trip my mind kept
wandering back to turning around to enjoy a quiet weekend at home where the sun was
shining, the temperatures were near 86 degrees and the breezes were calm. He truly
loves “Driving Ms. Debby!”

We had smooth sailing up Route 107 into Cashiers, although this beautiful scenic route

wasn’t convinced they would hold back our Chevy Tahoe if it decided to deviate from
the intended course! Of course, I knew my driver was a proven expert and he really
didn’t want to journey into any ravines and so far the Fall foliage wasn’t worth any off
road escapades! The comfort of our North Carolina family home was all I could focus
on and thank goodness the sun came out when we drove up the dirt drive!

Hurricane Michael devastated the Florida Gulf Coast and did some damage along the
rest of his path through the Carolinas and Virginia but up in the mountains except for
the 24 hour Weather Channel coverage, you’d never know a storm had been around.
For the next three days the sky was the most exquisite blue with periodic fluff clouds
blowing by. The temperatures were a bit cold – that coming from a former Vermont
Damn Yankee who gets cold walking past the freezer aisles in the grocery store –
and every Floridian up there had long sleeves and wool coats, except for the ones
snuggled tightly together in front of the hotel fireplaces! This was not a wedding to
show off your legs in a short cocktail dress or halter top and those young women
doing that were shivering all the way down the aisle! So grateful for my mother-in-
law’s St. John wool coat with chinchilla collar and cuffs!

The weekend was full of wedding excitement but outside tents with no heaters
provided a cover for the designer buffet tables but all 150 Florida guests were talking
about how cold they were, not how delicious the lobster mac and cheese tasted! In
spite of the evening temperatures, we managed to do our share of sightseeing during
the days. We found every golf course that we could get into – heaven forbid we run
out of golf shirts but long sleeve shirts can’t be found in the South Florida clubs so we
collected several over the weekend! I must admit it was exciting going up and down
the mountain ranges full of cliffs and a variety of trees just waiting to burst into full
colors.

Soon Sunday morning was upon us, and I, once again, became the navigator/
passenger armed with Google as my guide in an 11 hour adventure back to Florida.
Going DOWN the switch back mountain roads at 7:00 AM in the morning with fog
rising up from the valley floor wasn’t my favorite activity because I couldn’t see the
horizon – a trick I learned to quell motion sickness when I had 4 children ready to
throw up in the back seat - but at least we got started before any of the other
Floridians hit the pavement! I’m grateful my driver is slow and steady and not trying to
break the land speed record back to Florida.

One big plus of driving off the Interstate highways is going through the many small
towns. I love seeing America through small towns and yet many times wondered why
people lived there – especially when you might not see a home or store for miles and
miles. What’s the draw?

30 | Positive Tribe Magazine

Grateful for Being the Passenger

continued
At one point CJ and I must have had the same thought at the same time as we
looked out at the cattle/cows in the vast pastures. Ok, what’s the definition of “cattle”
versus “cow”…a Google moment! Here’s the elementary school definition, “One is
for beef and one is for milk.” What an existence…eat, stand around, sleep (standing
up?), poop, and then start all over.

We laughed at the thought “Don’t eat too fast or you’ll be Prime Rib at the closest
Long Horn Steak house! Then again, don’t eat too little or they’ll think you’re sick.”
Not sure either alternative is pleasing to the cattle/cows and we certainly didn’t ask
them!

Who thinks those things, except a couple of butt-tired travelers driving along a
LONG, two lane road through “no-where!” No offense to the country folks – I love
the quiet towns all along the journey and I pondered how the frenetic weather and
news of the day, broadcast from NYC, Washington, DC or LA, really affected their
lives. I try not to let the news affect my daily life too much – it’s definitely a spectator
sport which I limit to an hour/day just because I really only need to see the local
weather! I bet that most of us prefer our local news or no news at all to most of the
national stuff these days! No digression here.

As you can tell, I love being a passenger as long as my husband is the driver. The
long trips give us time to talk – really talk about our kids, our work and most
importantly, our marriage. We hold hands for hours. We look up what’s growing
along the side of the roads. We use our travels as a living classroom and realize
how grateful we are to be living in one of the most beautiful, interesting and diverse
country.

I’m grateful for my friend inviting us to her destination wedding. When you have the
opportunity to go someplace different, say yes. Look at everything with your grateful
glasses on and enjoy the ride. Every driver appreciates a grateful passenger!

ultimately putting it through the proverbial wringer instead of being grateful for it… just
the way it is. I love what Dr. Bruce Lipton says about perception rewriting body
chemistry. Gratitude can be the catalyst for that change.

Even though the conversation around self-worth and body image is changing, many
people, especially women, are still having a love-hate relationship with their bodies
from so many perspectives. What to eat, what not to eat, that is the question. If only
this didn’t have so much sugar, or that had so many calories, unhealthy fat… what do
you mean I can’t eat dairy or bread? What am I supposed to live on? Lettuce? Look at
this face… there are no whiskers and if you say anything about my teeth…! You get
the picture. That’s more attitude than gratitude.
The practice of gratitude is an attitude shifter, a mind transformer, and a body re-
shaper. Here are just a few suggestions:

Begin your day writing down at least three people, places or things you are grateful
for. Go a little deeper than the warm bed you just rolled out of and the sun shining
through your window. Breathe for a minute and drop into your heart space before you
write. What are you really feeling grateful for?

Add one thing you like about your body to your gratitude list.

Look at yourself in the mirror… a full-length mirror if you have one. Close your eyes
before the judgmental chatter begins in your head. Take three deep breaths and let
them out with an audible sigh. Go ahead, breathe. Open your eyes slowly and look
yourself in the eyes. Take a good look at those beautiful windows that reflect your
glorious soul. There is no one just like you. Practice looking at yourself with love and
gratitude. Feel gratitude for your winning smile, your hair, your facial features, and as
you get comfortable with the process, scan your image and begin to feel gratitude for
your body. Be grateful for your legs and feet that carry you throughout your day and
your arms that hug your loved ones. Practice being grateful for your belly and your
butt. I know it sounds funny, and nearly impossible for some of us, however, your belly
area is where all the delicious food you eat is processed to give you energy and
vitality. And your butt, well without it, how would you park yourself in a chair to sit at
the table to eat those foods that nourish you?

Honor yourself. Whether you are happy with your body or not, honor yourself with the
gift of gratitude for the body you do have.

You are a one-of-a-kind masterpiece, so…
Take Good Care

thinking about your problems, sometimes so much it becomes obsessive. The
same thoughts and feelings keep arising, over and over.

That is the problem — that nearly constant stream of thoughts about your
problems. The problem isn’t out there in the world; it is within you. Who would have
thought that our thinking is the problem? Our thoughts don’t want to go there —
who wants to admit that they’re the problem?

This is a great discovery to make, however, because we can affect and change our
thoughts far more easily than we can affect and change someone else or
something else in the outer world. How do we do that? By focusing on what’s
working, and by focusing on the solutions rather than on the problems.

We know what the problems are. We don’t have to dwell on them or constantly
return to them. We get the problem, very quickly. What’s the best thing to do about
that problem? The intelligent thing to do is to brainstorm with ourselves about
possible positive solutions and even try to imagine what an ideal solution would be
— our “ideal scene” for that situation. And even more importantly, the smart thing to
do is to keep reminding ourselves about the things that are working in our lives.

Focus on what’s working in your relationships. A whole lot of good things have
happened in your past and are happening right now — if you just focus on them.
Be grateful for what you have; be especially grateful for who you are — a body, a
mind, and a spirit that are phenomenal creations of the forces of life. Be grateful.

As Eckhart Tolle says so beautifully in The Power of Now:

Stop looking outside for scraps of pleasure or fulfillment,
for validation, security, or love —

you have a treasure within that is infinitely greater
than anything the world can offer.

Every great sage and teacher says the same thing, in many different words. The
Kingdom of Heaven is within. There is an end to suffering, and we find it within our
hearts and minds.

An Attitude of Gratitude Goes a Long Way

Continued

I am grateful for also offers me a hopeful and optimistic energy that supports me in
times when I am down.

Research in the field of psychology research reveals that gratitude is consistently
tied to greater feelings of happiness. We have probably all noticed in our own lives
that greater happiness leads to deeper connections with self and others, better
health, better productivity and joy. Gratitude helps us focus on the good in our lives
instead of what we lack. Over time, this positive mental mindset expands and
grows stronger, anchoring even more positivity in our lives. Now that is something
to be grateful for.

In order to usher in the holiday season, here are some ways to cultivate gratitude
and appreciation:

Keep a gratitude journal. Start a good habit and write down all that you are
grateful for before going to sleep at night. This will ease your mind and help you
have a more restful sleep. Or, you could start your day with gratitude, listing
everything you are grateful for from the previous day.

Pray or meditate. Spend time in the Silence pondering the good in your life. Allow
yourself to bask in the positive feel-good energy that arises in your heart.

Send a thank you note to someone. Express your appreciation on paper.
Deepen your connection with another person by writing a thank-you letter filled with
juicy details of what you appreciate and how that person has impacted you.
Challenge yourself to write at least one appreciation note per month.

Write a thank you note to yourself. Make a list of all that you appreciate about
yourself. Be kind, be generous, be thoughtful in the list that you make! Grab your
colored pencils and decorate your thank you note with colorful flowers and swirls,
you deserve it!

Thank someone mentally. Don’t have enough time to write? It will boost your
energy to just think about someone who has done something nice for you. Send
them a sweet, but quiet, “Thank you!”

Count your blessings with friends or family. Pick a time every week to sit down
together and share your blessings aloud. Go around in a circle, one person at a
time, sharing what you are grateful for. Allow the gathering to go on and on and on!
I would love to hear how these gratitude practices touch your life! Feel free to reach
out to me and let me know what you are grateful for and what you most appreciate!

to go to the bathroom. ~Doug

This is called a ‘break-through’ dream where your body is telling you something
that is real in your waking world, and it breaks through into your dream world. You
may really have a full bladder, and this fact is transmitted into your dream and
becomes part of your dream. It may be a way your master computer-your brain-
alerts you to reality in the dream world. Usually, your brain will awaken you; you will
stumble to the bathroom, do your business, and return to bed, snuggle back into
your same position you were n before you awakened, and often slide back into
your same dream right where you left off. This is called “reentering your dream”
and is a technique many dreamers use to go back into an early morning dream to
retrieve information. In the unfortunate and rare event that you dream you are
actually using the bathroom and do not awaken, you may find yourself waking up in
a wet bed.

What are the Chances?

By Alan Cohen – From the Heart

Do you believe that the universe operates at
random, or is there a higher intelligence that
orchestrates encounters, events, and a stream of
destiny? After observing many uncanny
synchronicities, I have a firm belief that, despite
appearances of haphazardness, a brilliant and
loving hand guides us to our right place at the right
time for the right purpose.

Alan Cohen Sonia, a woman from Paris, attended my Life
Coach Training retreat at a remote area in Hawaii.
Alan brings a warm blend During the program she chatted with another
of wisdom, intimacy, student, Andie, who told her that years ago she
had participated in a six-month French language
humor, and vision to the immersion program in Paris. “I stayed with a
path of personal, woman named Marie St. Ives,” Andie recounted.
Sonia’s eyes bulged. “That is the woman I
professional, and spiritual purchased my apartment from.” After confirming
growth. He loves to extract details, it became clear that Andie had once

story about your trip to Africa. I was on that trip with you.” After comparing notes,
both agreed that they shared the same adventure with a small group of Oregon
high school students. Now, 20 years later, they were seated at the same table in an
out-of-the-way restaurant in Maui. Bruce and I just “happened” to bring up that
subject. A week later the woman sent me an email with a photo of her and Bruce
standing outside the tour bus in an African plain. What are the chances?

A Course in Miracles tells us, “Chance plays no part in God’s plan.” Every person
you encounter, from the family you are born into, to the person with whom you
share a brief elevator ride, to the customer service agent who takes your phone
call, to the clients in your business, to your spouse, to your children, all come to
you as friends and teachers on your spiritual path.

Some empower you with love, and others challenge you. In all cases there is a gift
for you. When you recognize the gift, extract it, appreciate it, and use it, your
journey becomes far lighter and you accelerate your spiritual advancement and
deepen your soul reward.

Wayne Dyer offered the analogy of entering a junk yard and finding a fully-intact
Boeing 747 airplane. “After examining the plane and recognizing the perfect
integration of all of its elements and systems, would you conclude that all of the
intricate pieces came together at random, or would you have to believe that some
vast intelligence orchestrated the manufacture of this highly complex yet
meticulously functional system?”

The engineering of a 747 is a mere pittance in comparison to the engineering of the
universe. I love to garden in a papaya orchard I started from seeds. It is utterly
amazing to me that I can take a tiny papaya seed about 1/10 inch in diameter, plant
it and nurture it, and it grows into a tall tree producing hundreds of delicious
papayas over its lifetime. I look around the orchard of 25 trees and see an
abundance of gorgeous, sweet, nutritional fruit. Who set up that system? No
human being invented a papaya and imbued in it the genetic genius to reproduce
itself forever and feed many people and animals. We can cooperate with the
system and cultivate papaya, but we did not initiate it. God did.

In my book The Tao Made Easy I underscore and celebrate that the universe is
functioning meticulously and there is indeed a plan that works when we tap into it.
We do not have to invent the plan. It is already well in place. We just have to
cooperate with it. Many new age and new thought teachers state, “you create your
own reality.” This is a half-truth. Reality has already been created quite nicely.

There is nothing you can do to change it. If you understand it, you would not
want to change it because it is always working on our behalf. What you do create
is your experience of reality. When you align with reality, you thrive in every way.
When you think and act outside universal truth, you grow miserable and wonder
what you are doing here. Our role is not to create reality. It is to find it and ride it
like a surfer rides a wave.
While we aren’t always aware of the brilliance of the universe, occasionally we
have an encounter that gives us a peek into the unspeakably massive 747 we
are all riding. Those moments are cause for faith. We can have confidence that
we are known and loved, and we can relax and can enjoy the ride.

t.hey’re sometimes forgotten or not recognized, validated, and appreciated. Our
veterans, around the world, have made significant sacrifices, and it’s important to
accept that not everyone can do every job. It takes a very special person to put
their life on the line, like someone who joins the military.

Let’s be honest, no one—OK, very few people—like war, including, if not
especially, those who actually go to war and watch their friends and innocent
victims fall. At the same time, some of the most beautiful pictures are those of
military personnel kneeling down, talking with, and giving a small gift to a little
boy or girl in the country the soldier is deployed.

Veterans are that special kind of people—the people who put their lives on hold
to be of service to a larger whole.

They’re the kind of people who don’t quit when things get tough. Life is not easy
in the military; early mornings, few liberties, people telling them what to do and
leaving them very little choice but to obey their orders, and often they’re removed
from their families for extended periods of time—sometimes not knowing IF they
will ever see their loved ones again. Still, these people voluntarily sign-up
anyway!

What kind of person does this?!

Someone who has a deep sense of loyalty, courage, and commitment to service.
They’re called “servicemen” and “servicewomen” for a reason. What would our
world be like if we had more people who were service-minded? I’m confident our
world would be filled with more loving-kindness, generosity, and appreciation.

Appreciation and gratitude are interesting words; they’re so similar to each other
and, yet, just different enough to be mentioned. And it’s valuable to understand
the difference.

The origin of the word “appreciate,” means to “appraise” something; in essence,
it’s setting a “value” for something, or someone. The REAL value is not externally
determined, but internally by each person. What’s fascinating is how the value,
or appreciation we have for something, or someone, will be heavily influenced by
the perspective from which we look. Much like the quote above referencing
appreciation for the warrior when the enemy is at the gate; we may not
appreciate the value the veteran has brought to our lives until we’re faced with a
need they are uniquely equipped to address.

45 | Positive Tribe Magazine

Everyone Matters! continued continued

There is a beautiful concept within the different branches of the military that no
soldier shall be left behind, and Dan Lipinski, a U.S. Representative for Illinois,
carries it even further when he suggests we think of our veterans similarly, “as a
nation, let it be our pledge that when they return home, we leave no veteran behind.”
What would it look like if we personalized this concept even more by individually
recognizing the value we see in each human being, who was also a veteran? How
would we see them if we remembered their voluntary willingness to do the hard jobs
most of us would rather never have to do? What could it do for our sense of
community?
And while appreciation of our veteran’s efforts and actual service is clearly
important, our gratitude may be even more impactful!
Gratitude is the outward expression of that appreciation we feel. And just as my
sincerity brings tears and a sense of real personal-value to the garbage collectors of
our world—our mutual respect and appreciation can change the life of a single
veteran anywhere in the world when we simply say, “Thank you.”
If you have the opportunity, please look at our service men and women, next time
you’re in their presence, and offer a word of gratitude. A simple “Thank You” for their
willingness to exchange an easy life for the difficult one; for their courage to step
forward where others might be scared, and for their commitment to honor what they
believe in . . . Service.

Beyond Coping

by Laura Reeves

For anyone coping with a debilitating illness or
condition, day to day tasks can seem utterly
overwhelming. So attempting to work, care for family
and/or friends or have a social life (sigh!) can seem
impossible. Having been there and done that, allow me
to offer some useful suggestions to live beyond coping
and into a freer life.

5 Strategies to Reduce Overwhelm and Increase
Freedom :

Laura L. Reeves is a 1. Be honest with yourself.

or family for some respite care. Can they help do your dishes, some light
housework, stay with your children, etc.? Have ‘that’ conversation with your
employer if it is safe for you to do so. Ask about flexible hours or reduced hours if
financially feasible or telecommuting options. Be bold and advocate for yourself as
fervently as you do for others.

3. Plan as You Can.
Now there is a four letter word that most everyone dreads! As the old saying goes:
those who fail to plan, plan to fail. While there is truth in that aphorism it is more
important to note that a daily list is a plan. Write down your aspirations, desires or
ideas on a daily basis. Use an online journal or if you prefer old fashioned pencil &
paper, and make notes on what you would like to accomplish that day. You can list
these items at specific times of day or for later in the week or even next month.
THE most critical thing is to write it down. And refer back to number 1) Forgive
yourself, if you can’t scratch through every item on your list for that day.
Congratulate yourself every day for making a list!

4. Learn/Educate Yourself About Triggers.
Since you’ve already made a daily list (right?!), consider keeping a brief journal of
how you felt physically, mentally, emotionally for that day. Did you eat something
that set you off physically? Was talking to that ‘friend’ the incident of the day that
put you in a depressive funk or generated some anxiety? Did you beat yourself up
for not getting to that daily list? Relax….make notes and move on. Be kind and
unwind! Knowledge of what triggers you to react in a detrimental way can be very
liberating. It is freeing to know that avoiding those specific triggers can make your
life better in a very real way.

5. Laugh.
Yep, Proverbs 17:22 says “A joyful heart causes good health, but a sorrowful mind
dries the bones.” So who wants dry bones?! Certainly not me! People that others
see as humorous or funny are attractive in a very elemental way. They see life in a
positive frame that colors all their interactions with both themselves and others.
Watch comedies (Three Stooges, anyone?), read jokes, call your funniest friend
and talk or hang out. Find the humor in every situation that you can. Laughing often
and long has both physical benefits as well as the emotional and mental upside.
Besides, always having a smile on your face makes people wonder what you’re up
to!

So in summary: be realistic, be specific, be gentle, be kind, be funny and most of
all be positive!
