obsessive-compulsive disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder)
• Personal injury
• Bereavement
• Family conflict or violence, blended families, divorce
• Sexual abuse/assault
• Emotional regulation difficulties
• Gender identity issues
• Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder
• Learning disabilities
• Oppositional defiant disorder
• Developmental disorders and challenges (autism spectrum disorder)

Therapy

A number of treatment approaches may be implemented depending on
the needs of the child/adolescent, their family, and the clinician’s
judgement about what approach will be most helpful. These approaches
include individual therapy for a child or adolescent, play therapy for a
young child, family therapy, parent-child therapy, and guidance and
behavioural management for parents.

Initially, our receptionist will ask that the parent(s) attend a meeting
without their child to discuss their concerns in detail, and to determine
how to best proceed.

After the parent meeting, we generally meet a couple of times with the
child or children, then meet again with the parent(s) to discuss our
impressions, and embark on a plan of action. Often this treatment plan will
include a series of sessions for the child/parent/family.

However, if we believe you and your child need other forms of intervention
or consultation, we will make specific recommendations (e.g.,
consultations with the school team, a medical consultation or
community-based services referral).

Consulting Services

FVB Psychologists offer consultation services to school board personnel
(principles, teachers, psychologists, social workers, behavior specialists)
concerned about a student’s academic performance or their ability to cope
with everyday stresses and/or demands of school.

Psychoeducational
Assessments

A variety of issues may lead to the recommendation for a
psychoeducational assessment, including: concerns about your child or
adolescent’s ability to read, to put their thoughts on paper, and/or master
mathematics. If pertinent to your child’s needs, the assessment may
explore concerns with organization, problem solving, processing speed,
language and attention.

The clinician will meet the parents for a first session to obtain
developmental history about the child, and to understand current
concerns. Several sessions will then be booked, usually two-to-three
hours in length. Typically, five to six hours of testing is required for most
pre-teens and adolescents. The selection of the tests depends on the
nature of the referral including measures of phonological awareness,
fine motor integration, memory and visual-spatial sequencing. After the
results have been analysed, we meet again with the family to discuss the
results and implications in detail, and provide guidance around
school-related programming issues.

At FVB we take the time to listen to your concerns and provide a
sensitive and thorough assessment of a child’s strengths and
weaknesses. If your child qualifies for a specific diagnosis, the
implications will be discussed with you. This information will enable you
to advocate for your child within the school system.

It is recommended that students entering high school or post secondary
institutions receive updated assessments as schools often require them
in order to provide academic accommodations.
