The Old City of Tzfat is one of the northern cities in
Israel’s Galilee fortressed by the legendary Yosef ben
Mattityahu to protect its residents from the Roman
conqueror. Following the destruction of the Second
Temple, the Yakim family of Jerusalem, the 12th of
the 24 divisions of Priests, settled in Tzfat.

Tzfat is acclaimed as one of the four holy cities,
together with Jerusalem, Tiberias and Hebron, and
its name is veiled in an aura of spiritual mysticism,
sacred mysteries and millennia
of rich Jewish history.



Like the city itself, the roots of the name Tzfat are
cloaked in mystery. Some profess that it draws from the
word metzapeh, to wait and anticipate.
Others maintain that its source is tzofeh, overlooking
the crests of the Galilee Mountains and depths of the
blue Sea of Galilee.

Folklore recounts that the city’s name is but an acronym
for tzvi (beauty) – pe’er (glory) – kesem (magic),
as every step taken through its narrow streets and alleys
allows residents and visitors to unveil new levels of
beauty, history and magic.
