International Literacy Day is celebrated every year on the 8th
of September to raise awareness about the importance of
literacy as a matter of dignity and human rights and to
promote the importance of education.
The Leo Club of KIU organized a competition concurrent to
the International Literary Day 2021, to improve literacy skills
of the beloved youth and to spread the meaning of real
literacy together with their creativity. The competition was
held under three categories for university and school students;
essay, poetry and art. The project succeeded with the highest

number of participants among the projects that were held on September. Also, the project was efficacious as it
attempted to polish up the talents of youth and gave a meaningful motivation to their creativity.
Since it was open to both university and school students, the winners of each category were selected separately by the
qualified judge panel and were awarded e-certificates.

HEALTH BLOOM
PATHWAY TO BECOME NON-DIABETIC

Even during this pandemic, people are diagnosed with
various health conditions and are undergoing treatments
for them. Diabetes is one such severe unnoticed health
condition that has brought challenges to the world.
Diabetes is a chronic illness that occurs due to elevated
plasma blood glucose levels, which is around 60-110
mg/dL during fasting. The key hormone of diabetes is
insulin. In the health sector, several types of diabetes are
detected among the population, out of which type I and
type II diabetes are of major significance. Currently, the
prevalence of diabetes in the Sri Lankan population is
around 10%.

"HEALTH BLOOM" is a project that is specially
conducted under the category of health, nutrition and
food safety, to create an awareness about diabetes among
the youth. This project is based on the participant’s ideas
and knowledge about diabetes to spread an awareness
among the other individuals.
The project board, which includes the project
chairperson Leo A.G. Nadeesha Nirmali, project
secretary Leo P.K. Kavindya Nirmani, and project
treasurer Leo M.I. Udumbara Jeevanthi Munasingha,
conducted this project in two phases. The phase I
consisted of a poster designing competition. The
registration period of phase I was from 25th August 2021
to 28th August 2021 and its submission period was from
29th August 2021 to 2nd September 2021. The phase II
consisted of a quiz competition. The registration period
of phase II was from 31st of August 2021 to 4th of
September and the competition was held on the 10th of
September.

health systems under immense pressure and stretched Project Co-treasurer – K.M.D. Vithanage

respond to this public health emergency and successfully
minimize its impact on the society.

Divisional Hospital A in Dankotuwa, North Western, Sri
Lanka had been treating nearly 76 COVID-19 patients in
the month of July. As a result of this pandemic outbreak,
there weren’t enough medical resources and the
available resources were running out due to the surging
number of COVID patients in the hospital.
As an initiative to serve this situation, Leo club of KIU
along with Lion Club of Colombo Second Century
Pioneer Leo in District 306B2 donated digital blood
pressure operators, Personal protective equipment (PPE)
like masks and gloves, and hand sanitizers to the
hospital.

People often think that they should be a master chefor a

have always been a person who avoids entering the

Baking is an art that requires all five senses: sight,

how good the ingredients look to feeling the consistency
of the dough… You need them all.
