the Principals
Dear Parents,
Special thank you to all the moms who helped out with the Melave Malka. Hazak ubaruch!
Hodesh Kislev has been filled with our Melave Malka, Hanukkah Hagigot, Yeme Iyun, siyumim,
Culture Panel, trips and more. Thank you to Morah Shames, Morah Braha and the 6th graders
for a spectacular Chess-themed Hagigga. Thank you to Morah Mazzie for a wonderful 1-3rd
grade Hagigga. Thank you to all of our faculty for making Kislev come alive in so many different
ways for our girls!
As we celebrate this holiday of light, a story I once heard comes to mind. There was once a
king who was growing older in years and wished to choose one of his 3 sons to take over his
kingdom. He came up with the following idea. There was a small shack in the middle of the
field. The king instructed his sons “Whomever can fill the shack to capacity will take over my
throne”. The oldest child went first, he filled the shack with rocks and stones of all shapes and
sizes. When there was no room left, he filled the cracks and crevices with small pebbles. It was
then the second son’s turn. He carried bags of feathers and dumped them in the shack. Before
long the shack was filled with feathers from top to bottom. Finally, the youngest son had his
chance. After nightfall, the third son walked into the shack empty handed. He reached into his
pocket and took out a match and a candle. He lit the candle and the room was filled to capacity
with light. The king smiled. “You, my son, will take over my throne”. The truly wise son
understood how to fill a vacuum. Where there is emptiness, we are to fill that space with light.
When the Menorah sits on your windowsill or in your doorway the light it casts fills the area,
so much so that halacha tells us we need a shamash as we cannot use the holy flames to work
by, but we can use the glow of the shamash instead.
At YDE we are aware that every child has her own shining light - be it in her learning, her
talents, her hobbies, and her special smile.
Just like we face the menorah to the outside, so, too, our goal is to help our children
develop and spread their personal light to be the best ovde Hashem they can be. Let’s use
every opportunity to fill each person and place we encounter with our own special light.

A note from
the Principals
Dear Parents,
Nothing makes an educator happier than students who take pride in what they are
learning. Over the last few weeks I have been invited to see presentations in
classrooms throughout the building. Our YDE girls are transforming what they’ve
learned into experiences and their faces are beaming with pride. Whether seeing math
songs performed, number talks in action, nonfiction interviewing, vocabulary
skits, Newton’s Law demonstrations, Propaganda posters, biography cereal boxes,
or algebra games one constant can be seen throughout the girls love to learn.
Last week, a young lady was sent to my office. She had been told that there was a
Social Studies test scheduled and she was given the topics she would need to
study. She not only studied, she created an interactive review game to share
with her friends. Another young lady brought me a math crossword game she had
created to help her friends practice multiplication. She wanted to know if we
could help her to make it look more “professionally done” so we could hand it
out to everyone. Of course, we did.
I am amazed to see how inspired and motivated our students are. This enthusiasm
is palpable and contagious. The teachers are sharing it with the students who are
sharing it with each other. Ask your girls about what they are learning and
join in the fun!

In honor of חנוכה, the Middle School girls participated in a יום עיוןfocusing on "The Inner Beauty
of Each "בת מלך. The program included דברי תורה, hands-on activities, and discussion-based workshops.
We posed a question to the girls: “How do you define beauty?” We discussed how the beauty of a
בת מלךshines from within!
In one of our workshops the girls discussed a thought-provoking quote: “The יוניםsaw holiness in
beauty, while the יהודיםsaw beauty in holiness.” The יוניםidolized beauty that was associated with
perfecting the exterior, while as Jews, we value beauty in מידות, self-growth and modesty. American
society promotes superficiality, while we focus on identifying where our inner beauty shines from - from
our נשמהwithin.
Here are some of the activities we did that brought the lessons we learned to life:
You are a Gift: The girls played a “Pass the Present” game where they sat in a circle and passed a
wrapped present from hand-to-hand. Each time the music stopped, the person holding the present
unwrapped a layer. The game was presented as a משלto teach that just as the present is wrapped in
many layers, the essence of a בת מלךis defined by her depth and inner beauty.
Sign Here: The girls played a “Signature” activity to identify how a בת מלךshould appear, act and speak.
Each girl received a card listing characteristics of a בת מלך. I.e. I speak with respectfully to my
teachers; I speak calmly and softly; My hair is worn neat and tidy; The girls excitedly ran to find their
friend or מורהthat resembled that character trait and had them sign the card.
Each תלמידהreceived her very own dry erase board! Each month the girls will receive a magnet
connected to the מידהof the month. These מידותboards hang proudly in our girls’ lockers and we can’t
wait to see our magnet collection grow! We’ve already collected 3 magnets -“The Master Artist”, the
“Libech” logo, and “Let Your Inner Beauty Shine.”

Our YDE Girls High School Fellows, Mrs. T. Bassoul, Miss J. Betesh, Miss E. Bouskila, and
Miss S. Kaplan facilitated a mirror project with our 8th graders. The girls each selected art
stencils and פסוקיםto decorate their frosted mirrors.
The 1st -3rd grade girls enjoyed a fabulous
and meaningful חנוכהcelebration that
included a חנוכהbingo game, decorated מנורה
project that included the ברכותfor הדלקת נרות
חנוכה, music and dancing with Morah Esther,
and of course delicious donuts!
Our 4-8 grade חנוכה חגיגהwas inspiring as well as entertaining! This year’s חגיגה
theme included " ”מי לה' אליtogether with the slogan "I'm on the king’s team". We
combined the theme of the חנוכהvictory of the מכביםvs. the יוניםwith the modern day
theme of making the right choices and being ambassadors of ‘ה. Morah Shames, Mrs.
Braha and the sixth grade class outdid themselves with beautiful decorations, table setup,
centerpieces, 3D chess pieces, invitations and everything in between. The אחדותamongst
the girls was admirable –what !נחתThe sixth graders preformed a spectacular dance,
headed by our 8th grade חגיגהheads -Jacqueline Halabi and Danielle Mamiye. We played
an exciting signature game as well as a live matching game where the girls won great
prizes. As we wrapped up the event with dancing we were able to look back and say that
an enjoyable time was had by all!

We had a fantastic 8th grade class Hannukah party
at Mrs. Mohadeb’s house. Thanks for all your ruach!
This week the 8th graders have been teaching us
the dinim of Hannukah in fun way such as family
feud, puppet show, skits, games, and a beautiful
artistic display of paper mache.
The 8th grade girls learned about propaganda techniques
during WWI. They crafted incredible propaganda posters
and wrote a document-based essay on women and
propaganda during the war.
