A note from

the Principals

Dear Parents,

Carol Dweck encourages us to revel in the process of each new effort. “Picture your brain
forming new connections as you meet the challenge and learn. Keep on going.”
― Carol Dweck, Mindset: The New Psychology of Success

At the start of the school year, Rabbi Yedid spoke to teachers and parents about building
resilience in our children. This week, the entire YDE Girl’s Elementary School administration
had the opportunity to delve into what this looks like in practice. We want our students to know
that hard work has value.

A growth mindset allows students to become more than what they were last year, last month, or
even 5 minutes ago. Children who know that they are ever changing and that the power to
achieve is in their hands learn perseverance, resilience and develop a sense of purpose.

Through "the power of yet" we are hoping to encourage our children to aim to be better than
yesterday and to see the opportunities they receive each time they overcome a struggle.

We are looking forward to your partnership in making this goal a reality.

Expert from Carol Dweck

DO NOT praise intelligence or
abilities, DO praise the
process and effort.
If you aren't pushing out of
your comfort zone, something
is wrong.

The girls brought in various vegetables and canned foods and

they presented an appropriate way to prepare them on Shabbat!

We enjoyed a healthy and delicious salad afterward!

Color Keys

Some of our 4th and 5th graders are
having a great time in the elective

after-school Colorkeys Piano sessions!

This innovative, computer based piano

learning program enables the students
to quickly and easily become competent

at playing music. The girls are

advancing their way on the stages, and
many of them are already playing

Jewish songs!

Keep up the great work!

Author Douglas Florian Visits YDE Girls Elementary

We would like to thank our librarian, Mrs. Adena Katz, for the

in-depth author study of Douglas Florian and for arranging such a

beautiful author’s visit. Mr. Florian walked us through the process of

how his handwritten story becomes a published book. We had fun
snapping to the rhythm and repeating the rhymes as he shared his

poetry. We also learned how to draw a dragon and other fun

creatures. We learned that imagination is the best nation of all, and

most importantly, that going back to fix an error is hard for
everyone... even a famous author. What a meaningful learning

experience it was for all!

YDE Lobbying for Stem Funding

This week, Sara Ishay, Victoria Shacalo, and Lillian Sanado participated

in a day of lobbying government officials together with their mothers.

Mrs. Admoni, the middle school science teacher led the group as they

explained the importance of Stem funding for girls. In our effort to

ensure that the YDE girls can achieve excellence in all areas we want

to bring the best and most innovative staff, programs, ideas and more

to our stem program. By joining in the democratic process, the girls

experienced what it truly means to take citizenship seriously. We

would like to thank Chief of Staff Lisa L. Derrick, Assemblywoman

Rodneyse Bochotte, and Assemblyman Steven Cymbrowitz for

meeting with us and Teach NYS for arranging this important day.

Health-A-Thon

In conjunction with the Health-a-Thon, we are inviting our students to

participate in a writing contest.

Winners will receive an opportunity to order a healthy lunch to school.

Students’ work will be judged by a panel on written expression and creativity,
grammar and spelling, and detail. The writing prompts are listed by grade

level and students should choose one prompt only.

This is an optional contest, but we hope everyone will take advantage of it. All

entries should be brought to Morah Alicia before Thursday, March 5th.
Looking forward to highlighting our phenomenal writers!

This week the YDE girls were introduced to the

Health-a-Thon program, that will be running through the
beginning of March. Mrs. Beth Warren a registered

dietitian came to remind us about the importance of

healthy eating habits. Have you ever gone through a

whole day and realized that you have not eaten a single
fruit or vegetable? Mrs. Warren gave us tips on ways to

ensure that never happens to us. Thank you to Mrs.

Cheika for arranging this much needed event.
