Overview
Together Transforming Education
INTERNATIONAL COLLOQUIUM ON EDUCATION AND SOCIAL SCIENCES
‘Together Transforming Education 2.0’, an International Colloquium on
Education and Social Sciences, is a programme jointly organized by the
District Education Offices of Tuaran and Kota Kinabalu. The two District
Education offices perpetually aspire to preserve and cultivate best practices
among the school teachers in the Districts of Tuaran and Kota Kinabalu
through the practice of Professional Learning Community (PLC). The
programme gives room and opportunity to all the educators in Tuaran, Kota
Kinabalu and beyond, to share their innovations, especially the school
management and pedagogical innovations in this platform. Thus, it is hoped
that the online sharing of professional best practices will be able to help
empower and strengthen the quality of education in Tuaran, Kota Kinabalu
and elsewhere.
For Day 1 (21st December 2020), there are 2 Forums followed by parallel
sharing sessions about school administration and co-curriculum. For Day 2
(22nd December 2020), there is a Professional Talk in the morning, followed
by parallel sharing sessions about academic and student affairs. A Guest
sharing session will be the last programme before the closing and prize giving
ceremony.
The aim of the Colloquium is to give a space and chance to all the educators
to exchange their knowledge, skills and experiences regarding the teaching
processes, classroom-based assessments, educational administrations and
the outcomes of their innovations. At the same time, the programme helps to
create a digital platform for all the educators to toss ideas and thoughts
about the education system in the new normal. In addition, educators can
prepare themselves to respond to all the challenges in their teaching
profession, especially the future new normal in education resulted by the
Covid-19 pandemic.
1
• The objectives of the Colloquium are as follows:
• Providing a smart and resourceful online sharing platform for teachers and
education officers to brainstorm ideas, share their teaching and learning
experiences in the international level.
• Recognizing school teachers and students’ efforts in innovations through
the cultivation of Professional Learning Community (PLC) locally and
internationally.
• Strengthening the ties between the District Education Offices of Tuaran,
Kota Kinabalu, schools, educational institutions such as Teacher Education
Institutes, State Education Departments with educational institutions in
other states, regionally and internationally.
It is hoped that the programme will be run smoothly and all the aims and
objectives will be achieved successfully. The platform for the sharing of best
practices in students learning and pedagogical innovations through the
Professional Learning Community is the first and foremost international
programme jointly organized by The District Education Offices of Tuaran and
Kota Kinabalu. It is also hoped that the colloquium has opened a door of
opportunities to all the schools and educators in Sabah, especially in Tuaran
and Kota Kinabalu, to acquire and share knowledge with all the participants
locally and internationally. Consequently, the programme is able to fulfill the
aspiration of the District Transformation Programme, which is stated in the
National Education Blueprint.

FOREWORD:
The Deputy Director-General
Ministry of Education, Malaysia
(School Operations)
First and foremost, I would like to extend my highest gratitude to hadrat Allah
SWT because of His bounty and graciousness in realizing this Colloquium
entitled ‘TOGETHER TRANSFORMING EDUCATION 2.0’, which is jointly
organized by The District Education Office of Tuaran and The District Education
Office of Kota Kinabalu.
I am very appreciative of the two District Education Offices. Despite our
country’s fighting against the Covid-19, it is not an excuse for not holding a
program which can help to increase the excellence in education in this country.
Such kinds of efforts need to be commended and valued.
In conjunction with this Colloquium, I would like to touch on the theme, that is,
Transforming Education in The New Norms. I am sure that the rational for
choosing this theme is based on the current development of education in the
midst of the pandemic. The Covid-19 Pandemic does not inhibit the family of
officers and especially the teachers to share their research virtually.
In the academic field, research is carried out for solving any issue. At the end of
the research, it is hoped that the outcomes of the research have solved the
issues or at least have led to solutions. Meanwhile, innovation is directly linked
to creativity. A creative and innovative person is someone who always
ponders, wants to create something new, highly ambitious, bold and full of
confidence.
Research and innovation need to become a practice among the educators in
this country as teaching and learning concept nowadays is not merely about
teachers giving information; on the contrary, students need to gather relevant
information regarding what they have learnt through various sources,
especially virtually. In other words, the teaching and learning concept needs
students’ self-access learning and not solely students as knowledge acquirers.
It is appropriate that during the current situation teachers do not conduct face-
to-face teaching with students; teachers and students have to use various
methods to convey and acquire knowledge. Because of that, a change in
mindset among the educators is in great demand so that they can disseminate
knowledge and guide students with all sorts of ways.
3
A strong synergy of intelligence, creativity and uniqueness of mind produces
innovation. In this matter, innovation can inculcate creative thinking and
increase work productivity. Apart from that, innovation is synonymous with
modernization. These two concepts have a similar vision, that is
implementing renewal which is beneficial to the society. However, a notion
about the gradual fading of traditional values occurs when there is either a
passion for creating innovation or embracing modernization. Probably, this
notion is true and probably not, it depends from which angle that people
evaluate it. It is not impossible that the impression may become a reality.
Therefore, educators need to ensure that all the traditional values will still be
preserved in the efforts of creating innovation and embracing modernization.
Research and innovations must be turned into a culture so that our country’s
education system will be more dignified. As educators, we need to be valiant
in conducting research and producing something novel and pragmatic in
solving any issue or problem. “Do not be afraid for change. We may lose
something good, but will definitely gain a better thing.” “When you are willing
to start, you should have the courage and capability to solve it, not just finish
it.”
With that, you are to be the nerve centre and backbone for making research
and innovations as practices. Because of that, I urge you, the educators, to
take courage in conducting research and to innovate as this action can help
improve the dignity of education in this country. I hope that this program will
run smoothly, achieve its objectives and bring a positive impact to all the
educators as well.
DATO’ HAJI ADZMAN BIN TALIB
THE DEPUTY DIRECTOR-GENERAL OF EDUCATION, MALAYSIA
4
FOREWORD:
The Director
Sabah State Education Department
To all the educators, I would like to express my highest gratitude to The Most
Honourable Deputy Director-General of Education, Malaysia for officiating the
‘TOGETHER TRANSFORMING EDUCATION 2.0’ Colloquium. Certainly, I would
like to give my highest praise to Mdm Tah Nia Haji Jaman, the District Education
Officer of Kota Kinabalu and Mdm Hajah Wanihim binti Othman, the District
Education Officer of Tuaran, for their sincere and great efforts.
I wish to send my appreciation to all the committee members of the
‘TOGETHER TRANSFORMING EDUCATION 2.0’ Colloquium for your hard work
and high commitment for realising the very difficult great initiative in the
challenge of globalization. I am certain that you have gained lots of input from
the presentation of working papers, good practices and sharing of experience
from the presenters and experts in this field within and outside our country.
Thank you to all the educators for attending this programme online. Your
keenness in following the sessions presented from the beginning to the end
from 21st till 22nd December 2020 is surely worth it.
I would also like to take this opportunity to extend my greatest thanks to all the
presenters for your willingness to share your ideas from various kinds of
disciplines which include curriculum, co-curriculum and student affairs. There
were 42 working papers presented from various parties who are the experts
and very experienced in their areas. I hope that the presentation results will
become the source of reference and guidance for the educators in Sabah for
paying off the thousands of questions regarding school-level educational
disciplines. It is hoped that the fruits of sharing knowledge and experience will
be a guideline and benchmark for aligning strategies to fine-tune the
management of education in your respective levels of organisation.
5
I see that the theme, which was inspired by the two Education Offices, is
appropriate with the demand of the current education in which it is aligned
with the theme of Teacher’s Day for this year; that is “Teaching for
Knowledge, Building a New Generation”. This Colloquium has touched on
teachers’ roles in empowering learning and professionalism for building a
new generation. It has also fulfilled the requirements of the National
Education Philosophy and prepared our teachers with the latest challenges
which definitely demand their sound knowledge and solid commitment. The
global crisis caused by the spread of the Covid-19 Pandemic does not only
cause the delay of conventional teaching and learning, it also makes the
educators, especially teachers at schools, face more challenges when they
need to adapt to the new living conditions and habits in which the process of
teaching and learning needs to be conducted virtually.
Educators, especially teachers, must not only be equipped with content
knowledge and various academic disciplines, they also need to master digital
technology and improve the delivery of the lessons to their students via e-
learning. I would like to exhort all the teachers in Sabah, to always increase
your learning, competency, abilities, skills, and the readiness to change your
attitude amidst the acceptance of the new normal in the world of education.
The quality of education, especially in these two districts and generally in
Sabah, has been enhanced by the internationalisation of the TTE programme
amidst facing current global challenges in education. This programme has
been strengthened by the presenters and assessors from within and outside
the country such as Thailand, the Philippines, Indonesia, and Vietnam, and
certainly has brought an important impact in the development of education
in Sabah. For that I want to record my thanks and gratitude to The District
Education Offices of Kota Kinabalu and Tuaran. The number of participations
in the Colloquium for these 2 days symbolises that the teachers constantly
work unstintingly to make the education standard in Sabah fully dynamic and
reaching towards positive, competitive, creative and innovative qualities;
ensuring higher student learning outcomes so that the quality of education
will attain world standard.
6
Lastly, I hope that the TTE programme will be conducted annually. I sincerely
wish that the TTE programme will flourish as a platform for educators to
continue doing research in producing constructive and precise ideas to
accommodate the challenges of the dynamic education locally and
internationally in this new era. I am sure that this programme can act as an
annual event and will expand to include other District Education Offices in
Sabah. The sharing of practices for the two-day Colloquium has certainly
become a useful guidance for overcoming the issues of education in your
respective organisations. I truly hope that this kind of programme will
encourage educators to do more research and become an excellent culture
which will eventually expand teachers’ pedagogical knowledge and skills.
Once again, my highest congratulations and heartfelt thanks go to the District
Education Offices of Kota Kinabalu and Tuaran on your great and genuine
efforts.
DATUK DR. MISTRINE BINTI RADIN
THE DIRECTOR OF THE SABAH STATE EDUCATION DEPARTMENT
7
FOREWORD:
The District Education Officer
of Tuaran
Alhamdulillah, syukur kehadrat Allah SWT, with the permission of His grace,
the plan of advocating the international colloquium entitled, TOGETHER
TRANSFORMING EDUCATION 2.0 or TTE2.0 2020 is materialized.
Every beginning must have its history, so I would like to take the opportunity
to share with you about the history of TTE. TTE was inspired from the
activities regarding the best practices of the 21st Century Learning. Therefore,
this sharing platform, namely Together Transforming Education aligned with
the main objectives which can bring changes in education through the
cultivation of the 21st Century Learning.
Apart from the sharing of the cultivation of 21st Century Learning, the
implementation of Professional Learning Community (PLC) has upgraded TTE
from state level to international level whereby this sharing session is called a
Colloquium and all the presenters and panellists for the presentations and
forum are from within and from outside the country, such as Singapore,
Indonesia and Brunei Darussalam. TTE was held for 3 days in 2018 and the
venue of the programme was in the Sabah State Administration Centre, Kota
Kinabalu.
I would like to send my utmost congratulations to all the committee members
of TTE2.0. The full concerted efforts, fast and high efficiency, and
commitment of the committee members of the two district education offices
in Tuaran and Kota Kinabalu, will make this second Colloquium a success. I
would also like to express my appreciation to all the presenters for their
contributions in making the colloquium a platform for brainstorming, sharing
of experiences, best practices, and pedagogical innovations which will help
lead our country’s education to reach a higher level of success.
8
Indeed, the theme of the Colloquium “Transforming Education in the new
normal” is very appropriate. The challenges of globalization have enforced
on educators to improve their competency in educating and generating
outstanding learning of the younger generations. The Covid-19 pandemic
has obstructed and changed the usual normal education in our country and
the rest of the world. The future excellence of human capital in Malaysia
depends on today’s educators who constantly run after fresh knowledge in
various disciplines. This is vital because we should always be ready to face
whatever changes in the current education which demands earnest effort
and eruption of novel ideas. I believe confidently that organising this
Colloquium will cultivate the enthusiasm for learning among the education
community in the midst of the new normal. I am very sure that the great
efforts of the committee members of the TTE 2.0 in organizing this
Colloquium will be paid off when all the sharing of best practices locally and
internationally have driven the consolidation process and educational
delivery during the new normal and beyond.
Lastly, I hope that the staffs of the two host offices will be continually
committed in running such kinds of programme successfully in the future. I
also hope that all who are involved in this Colloquium will continue to give
full support and commitment for the sake of excellence in the quality of
Education in Malaysia.
Thank you very much for your undivided attention.
HAJAH WANIHIM BINTI OTHMAN, K.M.N.
THE DISTRICT EDUCATION OFFICER OF TUARAN

FOREWORD:
The District Education Officer
of Kota Kinabalu
First and foremost, I would like to extend my highest gratitude to hadrat Allah
SWT because of His bounty and graciousness that the online Colloquium
‘TOGETHER TRANSFORMING EDUCATION 2.0’ has borne fruit.
I would also like to record my thanks and appreciation to all the executive
committee members for your systematic hard work, adapting the management
in the new normal and facing various digital challenges to ensure that the
online management of the two-day Colloquium can be run smoothly and
successfully. Your creativity, commitment and cooperation are indeed so much
appreciated.
The ‘TOGETHER TRANSFORMING EDUCATION 2.0’ Colloquium is the second
Colloquium which is carried out in a new version namely, Transforming
Education in The New Normal, which is suitable with the efforts of overcoming
the constraints of face-to-face communications due to the Covid-19 Pandemic.
The first of the Together Transforming Education (TTE) Colloquium was
organized and run by The District Education Office of Tuaran in 2018. The TTE
2.0 this year is the continuation of the TTE and it is jointly organized by The
District Education Office of Tuaran and The District Education Office of Kota
Kinabalu.
The cooperation and smart sharing in succeeding the TTE 2.0 is a meaningful
networking as well as giving a wider room and opportunity for the participants
and the presenters from the two cooperating District Education Offices. This
international platform has fulfilled the demands of the challenges faced by the
issues of globalization in Education so that educators will be more motivated to
continue writing and sharing their success stories in best practices, research
findings as well as their innovations and creativity which have added values in
solving educational and management issues among the educators.
The continuity of internationalization of this TTE 2.0 is also ensuring that our
country’s educational research and innovations will keep flourishing
abundantly. There are many teachers who possess and produce high impactful
research findings, meaningful teaching and learning strategies that have
reduced and solved the issues and brought great impacts in their
10
classrooms, but have not been shared or disseminated as best practices by
other educators. Through such kinds of Colloquium, it is hoped that there will
be more research, innovations and best practices that are steadily recognized,
reach the level of the TTE and become an excellent work culture.
The participation in the TTE 2.0 is quite stimulating, exciting and consists of
various areas and categories of education in which they cover the area of
curriculum, co-curriculum and student management. The multiple topics of
research, best practices and innovations are based on the issues of
globalization and current educational challenges. To all the participants,
presenters and speakers, your attendance is a positive dynamical paradigm in
expanding each and everyone’s potential and creativity to the highest level.
Your participation is an exemplary example which will lead to the planning and
implementation of more research and innovations in your schools. You are also
a mentor in your respective schools to carry out further research and creative
activities for overcoming all issues and challenges in education. Carry on with
your writings and increase the value of educational assets in our country.
We feel honored and would like to send our thousand thanks to all the
academicians from near and far, for your willingness to take part as the panel
of assessors for evaluating the virtual research materials from different
countries in this TTE 2.0. Among the panel of assessors and panelists in the
forum, there are some from Vietnam, the Philippines, Thailand, and Indonesia.
The presence of the assessors and panelists from other countries will further
improve the degree of educational research and quality of knowledge and it’s
also relevant to the internationalization of the TTE 2.0.
To my beloved executive committee, your cooperation has established the
effective execution that everyone dreams of. I believe that all the plans will
definitely become the most desirable when it is run with the full spirit of
togetherness. Absolute mutual trust and the hope of gaining goals and
direction would bring out the best results. Your expertise and creativity have
proven that TRANSFORMING EDUCATION IN THE NEW NORMAL is a reality in
the historical sketch of the District Education Offices of Kota Kinabalu and
Tuaran. I wish that your earnest efforts will continue to be firm and become a
culture in the future. All the content knowledge and skills obtained in this
Colloquium will become a precious asset for the younger generations.
Thank you very much.
