1.0 INTRODUCTION
Our group manages to find different sources containing various writing styles, features

and text format. For example, Nurul Adyanie was assigned to find a newspaper report, Nurul
Syafiqah was assigned to find a movie review, Nor Adibah was assigned to examine a letter to
the editor, Miss NurulHaifa was assigned to search for an online blog and Raja Sofia was
assigned to examine a comic. Each of us must identify various writing features such as the
purpose, the targeted audience, language used and format in each of our assigned sources.

1.

2.0 TEXT TYPES AND FEATURES
2.1 NEWSPAPER REPORT
The Community Voice Newspaper
‘How COVID-19 is affecting people with mental health disorders’

Retrieved from :
https://siyanclinical.com/article-on-community-voice-on-covid-19/

The newspaper report that I chose is from the community voice newspaper with the title
‘ How COVID-19 is affecting people with mental health disorders’. The purpose is to inform
its reader how Covid-19 has impacted human mental health. For example, it is stated that
Covid-19 has made many people lost their jobs. It made them stressed. This newspaper report
also informs the readers what is going on in their country or world because of the Covid-19. It
also offers advice from people who are experts with this problem to help them to overcome
this problem.

Next, the targeted audience for this newspaper report is adults at the age of 25 to 65
years old. This newspaper report is mostly telling the readers about the impact of the people
who lost their job and it affected their mental health. Besides, is the language. The author is

using a formal language since the report is explaining about the world wide issue. Readers from
around the world can understand this topic. The writing is also clear and concise. Straight point
writing is used to help the readers understand what it is about. For example, keep your doctor
appointments.

Lastly, is the format. Headline is the title of a newspaper report. Headlines should be
catchy to get the intention of the reader. The headline of this newspaper report is ‘ How
COVID-19 is affecting people with mental health disorders’. The author is using a capital letter
for the word of COVID to catch the reader's attention. In addition, pictures are also used in the
newspaper. The author put the picture of the specialist. Opinion from other people is also
included by the author. As we can see, the opinion from Dr Anish Shah on how to protect
ourselves from Covid-19.

2.2 A MOVIE REVIEW
The Woman in the Window
Christy Lemire May 14, 2021

Retrieved From:
https://www.rogerebert.com/reviews/the-woman-in-the-window-movie-review-2021

The movie review that I chose was written by Christy Lemire titled as ‘The Woman in
The Window’. There are two purposes for this writing. The first one is to inform the readers
by providing detailed information. For instance, the director’s name and previous works, the
characters and their characteristics and the story plot. The second one is to persuade the
audience either to watch the movie or not. The writer does not recommend it and even criticizes
the movie by saying that it will leave you with a shrug rather than a gasp. Next, the targeted
audience is thriller and mystery genre lovers since this movie is about crime. It can also be used
by internet users as this review is available online. Moreover, the language used is English.
However, I recommend the author to write in other languages like French, Korean, and Spanish
so that all people can read it. The last one is format. For the introduction, the writer starts by
including the movie’s name, the cinematographer and the writer’s name and the originality of
this movie, which is an adaptation of a novel from 2018. The writer also provides a summary

which is a brief overview of the movie. She also writes her opinion on whether it is
recommended or not. The writer includes and analyzes the important events in her review. For
instance, the part where the female lead witnesses a murder of her neighbor by her own husband
in their kitchen. Overall, I do not recommend this movie because it has low ratings and bad
feedback from the other websites as well. I am convinced by the writer after I have read this
review.

2.3 A LETTER TO THE EDITOR

A letter to the editor is a formal letter that was sent to the editor of a newspaper to state
their issues of concern. Based on the letter above, the letter was written by Divyansh to the

editor of Hindustan Times New Delhi on the topic of evoking awareness towards solar energy.
The purpose of the letter is to raise awareness on excessive pollution as many people are sick
because of the pollution. Secondly, the purpose of this letter is to raise awareness of the need
of conserving electricity and limiting electricity as many people overuse it and the source is
getting decreased and lastly the writer suggests the use of solar power systems as this power is
non-polluting and will save our earth. Generally, the purpose of a letter to the editor is to create
community discussion and stimulate the interest of the news media.

For the audience, even this letter was sent to the editor, but the purpose of this letter is
to be published in the newspaper which is in the first section of the newspaper. Thus, this letter
is public and can be seen by everyone. As the letter was posted publicly, the writer should use
formal words and language as it can be accessed by everyone. The letter should be written in
present tense as the letter talks about the issue that is happening now and still ongoing. The
writer should also use first person pronouns as the letter is representing their view and opinion.
The format for this letter should be followed strictly. It should start with sender address, date,
receiving editor’s address, the subject of the letter, salutation, body, complimentary conclusion
and lastly sender’s name with signature.

2.4 ONLINE BLOG
Happiness is a choice, So Choose It!
By Mariana Ashley

Retrieved from : https://possibilitychange.com/happiness-is-a-choice/

According to the online blog, it is the space of sharing tips or the space of sharing
experience and anything else it should be in the blog. An online blog is the platform of journal
or information the authors would share. Online blogs have many types of this. Based on an
example of a personal mind of thinking, share it into a personal blog. It can see the purpose of
the author to share their attitude of happiness to the audience to get inspiration from the blog.
In addition, they would give the supporting details of a happy life and exchange of stories to
the reader to make more details in the story. By the way, this blog is the target of the audience
into the general reader that has been discouraging life and encouragement. And the internet
users who like to read the story and enhance their mind in a positive way to approve their
attitude in many ways of life. Such as the persons who are most interested in the writing of the
personal story. However, this blog is using the language feature which is the normal language
to clarify the levels of language where it is relatively easy to introduce the story. Then they
show off the situation of being happy and also distinguishing features of being happy. It also
lights on the imaginations of events to express the author's opinion in the story to express their
mind to the audience following through the story about. Lastly, the format of this blog
exemplifies feelings of happiness and the limitation of action and leads the personal mind and
experience key pass of the authors to the audience. It also demonstrated the choice of the
decision in the story blog that there are instances of the incident.

2.5 COMIC
“Sprocket In Adverbs And Modal Verbs”

The comic that I chose was from Dekko Comic titled ‘Sprocket in Adverbs and Modal
Verbs’. First of all, the comic's main purpose is to educate readers on what adverbs and modal
verbs are. Besides that, Rossie Stone whom is the creator of the online comic: Dekko Comic
shares how he produces this hard copy comics to turn from a dreary school curriculum into an
engaging and fun learning experience by smashing motivational barriers for both reading and
learning and are especially helpful for those with dyslexia. Besides that, the targeted audience

for this comic is students at the age of 8-12 years old. However it could also be read by
secondary or university students, specifically those who are learning English. Furthermore, the
author also specified how his comic is able to help people who suffer from Dyslexic and
Autism. All in all, the targeted audience in this comic is students studying English and those
who suffer from Dyslexic or Autism. Furthermore, the comic mainly uses English as their
language especially since its main objective is to teach basic English grammar. However, I do
believe that if the comic manages to branch out worldwide, more languages would be translated
such as Spanish, Arabic and Japanese. Last but not least, the format that Dekko uses are fun
story lines and creating creative characters to teach important facts and concepts. Besides that,
the comic uses colour coded legend at the bottom of each page which helps students extract the
most important content. Furthermore, I feel as though one of the bonuses of reading this comic
is that they also use suitable and eye-catching colour-coding and footnotes, as well as a
dyslexia-friendly font. Personally, I think that it is a great way as comics can help make learning
more accessible and encourage reluctant readers to get into reading, increasing their
engagement and learning retention which is really beneficial for them. Last but not least, the
format of this comic is in digital format and can be read online through the official Dekko
Comic website which is accessible for readers around the world.

3.0 CONCLUSION

To conclude, all features are needed to produce good writing. Every feature has their
own roles and the author must include them. Therefore, we acknowledge that each source has
their own unique writing features which highlights their intended motive of writing.
