National Mathematics Challenge

On Monday 18th June, 4 intrepid Mathematicians made their way with Mr. Slattery on the
train to South-West London to take part in the semi-final of the KS2 National Mathemat-
ics Challenge at Hampton Prep School. They had qualified after winning the East Sussex
heat in May. With a place in the National Finals at stake (at the Tower of London),
Claremont finished 4th out of 8, a great performance, but not quite enough to go forward
to the next stage. We hope to do well again next year.

Shakespeare Week

Shakespeare in French

Year 5 put together the French vocabulary they learnt so far by making their beautiful
versions of scenes from ‘Romeo et Juliette’. They used words and phrases such as: ’J’aime’
or ‘les deux familles se detestent’. The moral of Romeo and Juliet is one of letting old fam-
ily wounds go, and not letting your emotions rule your life. A timeless moral for readers
around the world.

Year 6 made Shakespeare’s family tree and were surprised to hear that Shakespeare’ s
wife, Anne had ‘des jumeaux’ ( twins). Year 7 learnt the verb TO BE in the Negative form
being inspired by Shakespeare’s famous quotation: ‘ To be or not to be, that is the ques-
tion’.

El viaje de Latinoamerica –
Thursday 14th June 2018

On Thursday 14th June I was delighted to welcome back the Spanish workshop Company
“Calena Fina” who performed and presented a Spanish cultural event of drama, music, sal-
sa and a story telling adventure about Cuba and Uncle Tito for Year 5-7.

This was such a lovely opportunity to celebrate such a successful first year of introducing
Spanish at the Prep School. It was equally wonderful for Year 5’s to immerse themselves in
this new subject which they will officially start in September.

The workshop saw us transported to Cuba in search of Uncle Tito. Carlos and Marr our
teachers worked brilliantly teaching the children Spanish words and the technical language
for Salsa and music. Their authentic method had us all feeling like we miles away from
rainy East Sussex and in the heart of the vibrant streets of Havana.

I was so impressed with the courage, openness and exuberance of our children. They all
embraced the day with “gusto” and excelled in both language and dance. Year 5 show huge
potential for next year and I am very excited to teach them. Years 6 and 7 should be very
proud of what they have achieved this year.

The day really was the best possible way to end the school year in Spanish…fun, lots of
hard work, and culture! “¡Viva la cultura española!”

A big thank you to all staff who helped with the day and for taking part. It was clear that
some of our lovely teachers and pupils could give next season’s “Strictly Come Dancing” a
run for their money!

I think it is clear the children got so much from this exciting event! It has broadened and
enriched the children’s education with a cultural, and linguistic experience of a Spanish
speaking country and the Spanish way of life right on our very own doorstep in our wonder-
ful school.

Wishing you all a fantastic summer!

A big Happy Birthday to Charlotte was celebrated during the
week! Thank you so much for all the lovely meals you cook for us!

Mathletics
Last Monday, we took eight Year 4 & 5 athletes to Hurstpierpoint for the annual County Athletics Meet-

ing. There was around 30 schools competing from across Sussex. It was a fantastic event and it’s a great

achievement to get to this stage, which only very few manage to do. If you win, it’s a bonus, but just to

compete and see if you can get a personal best is always the target. To compete at the event you had to

qualify within a certain time, height or distance. Amelie F ran the 75m and finished 6th. In their respec-

Nursery & Pre Prep Sports Day!

Nursery and Pre Prep enjoyed a suc-
cessful Sports Day with great enthu-
siasm and sportsmanship throughout
a very warm afternoon of events. It
was wonderful to see so many par-
ents and carers supporting all of the
children, as they ran, hurdled and
threw their way to success!

Thank you to everyone who helped to
support the event especially Mr
Moseley for starting the races, Mrs
Stoakley for handing out stickers to
the children and all of the Nursery
and Pre-Prep staff for making the
sure the children had a great time.
Also a big thanks to Trish Edwards
for serving teas and coffees and the
FOC for ice lollies. Well done all!

RW have been learning all about the devastating effects plastic is having on our oceans and why it’s so im-
portant to recycle. They have all created posters encouraging people to recycle, some of their imagery is quite
striking. The children were very excited to find out that their posters will be on display at the fashion show on
Claremont Day.

Ducklings &

Butterflies

This week the Ducklings and Butterflies have had a lovely time outside in the garden playing on the soft play, in the
ball pool and with the cars on the car ramps.

We are very excited as we have our new mud kitchen so we have enjoyed making mud pies and having a tea party with
our friends in Robins.

A big thank you to everyone that contributed to Cupcake Day on Thursday. This was a huge success and we raised
£111.

This money has gone to the Alzheimer's Society

Robins

This week in Robins we have carried on with our summer display board decorating some seaside shapes
including shell's, jellyfish, crabs, starfish and fishes. These are going to look fantastic displayed on our
board. To carry on with our seaside theme we explored some shell's Christine brought back from her hol-
iday.

Hedgehogs

Last Thursday the nursery held a cake sale to raise money for the Alzheimer's Society. We would like
to thank you for the support and kind donations. We raised an amazing £111.68.
This week we have been focusing on animals, the children have particularly enjoyed the farm animals.
We took the farm set outside and some of the children thought it would be fun to feed the cows chives
from the herb garden. We have really enjoyed the weather and taken many activities outside.

Badgers & Foxes

This week, we have been busy engaging our learning
outside since the weather has been grand. We have
introduced addition to the class this week, learning
to add one to a number. To help, we used the para-
chute and the dice and were thinking about what
number might come next. We have then had fun in
the forest, making music using sticks and logs. We
even tried making up our own songs.

We have also been busy creating our own village in
the playground by chalking on the floor. We creat-
ed a road, a building site, a bakery, Tesco and even
a toy shop.

Squirrels

This week the Squirrels have been focusing on the story The Very Hungry Caterpillar. We've done
fruit tasting at snack time, used fruit to paint and print with and made our very own Hungry Caterpil-
lar. We've also looked at shapes and counting, working together as a team to make shapes using our
bodies.

Kingfishers

This week the children helped rescue a bumble bee, so we decided to speak about different types of
mini beasts and their habitat. The children even made their own insects for our new display board.
