There were many standout moments during the incredibly enjoyable day, but 23 Mon Years 7 & 8 15:30
for me the tranquillity of St Dunstan’s was extraordinary. This church, 09:45
which was bombed during World War II, so only the walls and the Sir Chris- Tues Reception Fun Day -11:45

The Women Who Saved the Birds
Dora and Daniel Glass went up to London to help launch a
new book – written by their mother, Tessa Boase.
Daniel writes:
My mum has been writing a history book about the women
who founded the RSPB (the charity that protects birds) in
1889, campaigning against the Victorian and Edwardian
fashion for feathered hats. Bird species around the world
were under attack from the plumage hunters. Hundreds of
species were dying out. Some of the biggest wearers of
these hats were the suffragettes, who wanted women to
get the vote. The book’s heroine has a funny name: Etta
Lemon. No-one has written about her before.
After three years, my mum’s book ‘Mrs Pankhurst’s Purple
Feather’ was finally finished, and we had a big book launch
party to celebrate the book being finally published. I was in
charge of the cash as we sold the books, and I really actual-
ly enjoyed it.
Dora writes:
At our mum’s book launch, it was packed with people and
colour. We sold lots of books. Our mum was doing her signa-
ture, I was putting a feather in each book, and Daniel was
putting the books in bags. He also took the money.
Year 8 French oral exams
Well done all Year 8 pupils who worked hard in prepara-
tion for their French Speaking exams which took place
on Thursday 17th May.
The language learning skills they gained at the prep
school will give them increased confidence in studying
any foreign language in their senior schools and of course
in dealing with real situations in their future life wheth-
er at work or for pleasure. Good luck with the rest of
the exams.
Well Done!
Hastings and Bexhill Rugby stars Reuben B (Year 6) and Gonzalo S P (Year 6) were both awarded trophies
by their club, Hastings & Bexhill RFC, at Sunday’s awards ceremony. Reuben scooped Coaches’ Best
Back and Gonzalo won Best Newcomer. Gonzalo was also presented with an album of his time at the club.
Reuben, who regularly captains the Under 11’s introduced Gonzalo to his club, enabling the up and coming
Madrid player, to experience English Club Rugby, as part of his year studying as a Claremont Boarder.
With rugby in his blood, Gonzalo, whose brother once played for Madrid, didn’t take long to make an im-
pression. Their team finished the season almost unbeaten.
Both boys are having an enforced rest from training after Reuben broke his thumb and Gonzalo his fin-
ger during a match against Northampton.
Reuben will be joining Gonzalo in Madrid during half term and I’m sure rugby will be on the agenda.
Well done boys!

Swimming Gala Yrs 7 & 8
Claremont 132 - 153 Battle Abbey
The standard of swimming on show was at an incredibly high level. I was delighted with the effort of all of
our swimmers. All races apart from fly were 2 lengths and some races were extremely tight to call. The Year
7 girls again have been very competitive. This was the tightest scoreline with only 5 points in it. The Year 7
boys have been a massive highlight again and kept up this incredible run of staying undefeated. The Year 8
girls squad who have a small group have stayed together well throughout the year and have produced some
really strong performances. The Year 8 boys squad came up against a strong opposition and again were
pipped in a couple of races, however they have worked really hard this season. Well done to all of our swim-
mers. Breakdown of the results were as follows;

Yr 7 Boys 41 27
Yr 8 Girls 28 47

Swimming Gala Yrs 5 & 6
Claremont 113 - 151 Dulwich Prep
We came up against a very strong Dulwich squad. Huge credit has to go to our Year 4 swimmers that have
swam up to help the Year 5 squads, for the girls we had Amelie F and Summer C and in the boys squad we
had all Year 4's swimming as we have no Year 5's and they were Jack G. James F, Will S, William S and
James S. They swam really well, competing against swimmers an age group up. The Year 6 girls gave the best
competition as they lost out in a couple of races by an arm length and only 5 points. Finally the Year 6 boys
who swam were missing a couple of swimmers and a few swimmers swam more than expected but done so
with great effort. A breakdown of the results are as follows;

U11A Girls’ Cricket v St. Ronan’s:
The U11A’s had a closely contested game away at St. Ronan’s this week. Both teams were evenly matched but
Claremont dropped 3 catches when fielding and it was this that gave St. Ronan’s a narrow 9 run win. “Catches win
matches” after all.
Final score: St. Ronan’s 220 for 3. Claremont 211 for 5.
Player of the Match was Emma P.
U8A Girls’ Cricket v Bedes:
The Year 3 girls had a comfortable win in their game against Bede's. Claremont bowled very well and showed some
good decision-making when fielding, taking five wickets in total.
Maggie and Ami were the strongest batting pair scoring a total of 21 runs, closely followed by Ella and Maya with 19.
Final score: Claremont 253 for 0. Bedes 196 for 5.
Player of the Match was Maggie McK.
A fabulous result, well played girls!
U9/8 Cricket with Bricklehurst
It was a lovely afternoon of cricket. We combined our two schools and fielded 4 mixed teams.
The girls played against each other in a competitive yet relaxed atmosphere as you can see from
the photographs.
Colts Cricket House Matches
With only 6 players per house and only 5 overs per innings. Plus 5 runs for any wides and no balls.
This made for an exciting afternoon of Cricket. Run down of the scores below.
Sparta 41 - 45 Athens
Sparta went into bat first and picked up 41, however not a single run was from the bat! Athens
came in and reached Sparta's total within 4 overs. Charlie W getting 8 and Tom O 4.
Sparta 64 - 53 Corinth
This was much more like it, Sparta hitting some solid fours, most notably from Arjun K who
scored 28 not out. Max R supporting really well with 8 not out. Corinth then had to chase 65 to
win. They started really well with Luca R scoring 16 not out, however Rufus B took a wicket with
a fine catch from Harvey W.
Corinth 54 - 57 Athens
Sparta went into bat first and Reuben scored 14 and Antonio G took an excellent wicket for
Corinth. 57 scored and a decent total for Corinth to try and chase. Luca R scored 13 not out and
a few wides and no balls made it a frantic ending. Javier G got a timely wicket to stop the Cor-
inth momentum. Corinth needing 6 off the last ball to win, however a straight ball and Athens
held on to the win and come out victorious!

Dear Miss Flanigan
I saw a real helicopter in
Alexandra Park. It was for an
emergency. Me and Maggie
talked to the pilots. The pilots
couldn’t tell us anything about
the emergency because it was
private. There were 3 pilots
and 2 doctors. We watched the
helicopter fly off and it was
really windy.
Love from Isla
Leon was very proud to share his diary with Mrs
Stoakley. He enjoyed sharing with her events
from home and explaining the photos, pictures and
postcards to her. He spoke confidently and with
great enthusiasm about his activities. Thank you
Leon for sharing it with us all.
We made gorgeous pine cone owls today! Aren’t
they lovely?!
Year 2 went to visit the French room!
1L learning about what it means to be a good friend.
RW have had an exciting few days as our butterflies have
finally emerged from their cocoons. We have watched them
grow from tiny caterpillars and today came the day for us to
release them into the world and the life cycle to continue.
Ducklings &
Butterflies
This week the Ducklings and Butterflies have had a lovely time playing with the pasta ,water and bubble play in the
garden. We have also had great fun doing obstacle courses in the playground and joining the Robins for soft play.
Towards the end of the week We went for a trip down to the Jubilee garden to look at all the lovely things growing.
Robins
This week in Robins we were very lucky to have a visit from a member of staff from the Badgers room
and with them they had a bowl of tadpoles for us to look at! We all found this very entertaining. Also
this week in Robins we are looking at the colour orange and have a new orange display on our shelf and on
our window display.
Hedgehogs
This week we have been busy out and about. We have had a trip to the Jubilee garden where the chil-
dren planted some vegetables. We got to see some tadpoles and we also went on a creepy crawly hunt in
the long grass.
Badgers & Foxes
Badgers and Foxes have been very busy this week. We
have based most of our learning in the outdoor environ-
ment, taking advantage of the grounds we have at
Claremont. We have been carrying on developing the con-
cept of rhyme, linking it with the story paper dolls. Last
week, we created paper dolls using different materials,
where as this week we used ourselves. We joined hands
together, and continued a rhyming string going down the
line of 'paper dolls.' We have also been getting creative
with nature. Some of us have been creating nature faces,
collecting petals, sticks and leaves to help represent a
face. On the other hand, some of the children created a
nature collage, collecting different natural objects to
help them create a picture. In addition to this, we have
also released our class tadpoles into the lake. We have
been keeping a close eye on them, from when they were
just frog spawn. Year One, came to help us too. We will
be going to visit the lake regularly to see if we can spot
them.
Squirrels
This week in Squirrels we have been letting our imagination run wild with the introduction of the theme this week
from the story tale “Jack and the Beanstalk”.
We have searched our gardens for any bean stalks hidden in the trees and giants; we have played interactive
games based on the characters from the tale; also we have even created our very own beanstalk to go in our new
role play room and many other props too! We were so lucky to have a secret visit from Jack himself and were giv-
en magic jumping beans! Which we have now planted and will watch them grow through the next couple of
weeks. We also we had a visit from pre-schools tadpoles! They will turn into frogs! We loved meeting them and
looking at their feet growing!
Kingfishers
This week the Kingfishers have been making pom poms, and
threaded wool around pieces of card before cutting them with
scissors. We have also been talking about the royal wedding, and
decorated our own crowns and flags!
