Arjun Kolani performed exceptionally well in the Bonus Round of the Primary
Maths Challenge. He scored 23 out of 25 and won a Gold Award. In Novem- 21 Wed Rehearsals for 1092::0500-
ber, 68,000 pupils entered the competition, with 3,255 pupils who scored 20 Spring Soiree
or more being invited to take part in the Bonus Round in February this year.
Of these, Arjun came fifteenth, and will be receiving a Gold Award. It is a Pre-Prep, 1145::3300-
phenomenally impressive achievement and we are so proud of his success. Badgers & Foxes
During the Easter holidays, Arjun will be going to the Czech Republic city of Grandparents
Frydek-Mistek to play in a Chess tournament as part of the England National sing a-long
Junior Squad.

The annual FOCS Easter Egg Hunt was an enormous success, with Rosie Bur- Spring Soiree 1198::4005-
rows and Lilirose Hancock doing sterling work as Easter bunnies in the
woods. The cold and the damp did not stifle the children’s spirits and we are Spring Soiree
so grateful to Mrs Iversen and all of her helpers for putting on this well-
loved event. The Pre-Prep and some Nursery staff braved further icy condi-
tions on Saturday, when they welcomed over seventy children to a morning
of Forest School fun.

Fundraising Week started with an enormous amount of energy and enthusi-
asm. The pupils have come up with a staggering 56 separate stalls and all of
them seemed to be enjoying brisk trade at break times. There were an im-
pressed array of baked goods on offer, as well as games and activities, all
designed to raise money for WWF (as suggested by Elizabeth Kirby) and our
local charity, Seaview, whose work amongst the homeless, particularly given
the recent cold weather, is so vital for those who depend on their services.

I cannot believe that we are in the last week of term already: it has abso-
lutely flown by. Highlights this week include Grandparents Day and the
Spring Soiree, as well as the sponsored walk, and a new creative end to the
Lent term. It has been a fantastically busy few months and I think all of us
are due a well-earned rest.

On Saturday 10th March Eleanor S represented Sussex
at the National Inter-counties cross country champion-
ships which were held at Prestwold Park in Loughbor-
ough. The conditions were certainly challenging as a re-
sult of the snow melting followed by heavy rain, this
resulted in the course being a very sticky mudbath.
Even 15mm spikes were not long enough to feel stable
whilst running in this course and the race was about
survival and finishing without tumbling. Eleanor was
one of the unlucky ones who lost her balance, but de-
spite this she got up and continued and finished a very
respectable 74th (considering that 3 or 4 runners
would be coming in together every second). out of 302
runners. This was Eleanor's first year in this age group
and after an outstanding performance in the Sussex
league, it is going to be exciting to see Eleanor pro-
gress on her journey.

Liberty B-M winning her first ever medal at
Seagulls. She achieved a second in her heat and
a third overall for her backstroke at their gala
last Thursday.

While most of 6C were away in France, the remaining pupils took advantage in Science to do some extra
fun learning about acids and alkalis. The challenge was to create a spectrum of colours using their un-
derstanding of neutralisation reactions.

Three Year 7 Claremont boys starred for their district at a tournament in Eastbourne this
week and they finished as winners. Here they are pictured with the trophy. The boys were

Graham Newton

Claremont School was deeply saddened to hear of Graham New-
ton’s passing recently; his funeral is on 4th April at 11 am at Has-
tings Crematorium should you wish to attend to pay your respects
to Graham.
He was Chairman of the FOCS for many years and gave freely of
his time to organise events that were enjoyed by many children.
He is known by many parents at Claremont and his tremendous
contribution to the school over many years was appreciated by
staff and parents alike. He also had four children in the school
and his grandchildren now attend He has been involved with the
school in one capacity or the other since 1994. He died in Bright-
on hospital after a short illness.

Arjun K PRESS RELEASE - 14/03/2018

+ Claremont School student achieves gold award
in national Mathematics challenge
%
Arjun K from Claremont School has been presented
Izzy W as Edith Piaf at the Hastings Musi- with a gold award by The Mathematical Association in
cal Festival! this year’s Primary Mathematics Challenge (PMC). The
prestigious honour demonstrates his achievement as
one of the best young mathematicians in the UK.
The first stage of the challenge took place in Novem-
ber 2017 when the Claremont student competed
alongside 68,000 children across the country. Suc-
cessfully answering a variety of multiple choice math-
ematics problems, Arjun joined the 3,255 highest
scorers who were invited to take part in the PMC Bo-
nus Round in February 2018.

Arjun rose to the challenge and was one of only 167
students to win a gold award in the Bonus Round, an-
swering 23 out of 25 questions correctly, achieving
the 15th highest score in the country.

Speaking of Arjun’s success, Headteacher Abra
Stoakley said: “We are all extremely proud that Arjun
has won a Gold award. It is such an achievement to
receive recognition for mathematical ability on a
national scale. All of the children at the school en-
joyed taking part in the Challenge and most im-
portantly, it shows them that maths can be fun.”

Lesley Jones from The Mathematical Association add-
ed: “We would like to offer our congratulations to Ar-
jun and all of the students that participated. We re-
ceived a large number of entries which reflects a real
appetite for solving maths problems and puzzles. We
always try to make the questions interesting and ac-
cessible, while giving pupils an opportunity to apply
fundamental maths skills. It is great to be able to
acknowledge brilliant young minds in the UK and nur-
ture the future mathematicians.”

A huge well done to Arjun, and we look forward to
hearing more on his achievements within Mathematics.

The next Primary Mathematics Challenge takes

Science Week + Science Fair

The thermometers are rising, heart beats per minute are increasing and the frequency of excitement has
reached ultrasound levels....Our Science week is fast approaching and pupils have started to prepare their Sci-
ence Fair entries. The Fair is taking place on Friday 20th April. Pupils are asked to work either individually
or in pairs to answer a Science question, for example;

How can a Pond Skater walk on water? Why are rainbows curved?
How does a gecko climb up glass?
Which colour of light helps plants to
Why does fire emit light? grow the tallest?

There is an entry fee of £1 per person. The amount of money raised contributes towards prizes for the
best presented and thoroughly investigated projects. If children wish to enter, they should bring in
their money, complete an entry slip provided by their form tutor and take it along to the Senior Science
Lab. The deadline for entries is Friday 23rd March.

The Science teachers are also preparing some exciting activities for Science Week too....watch this

I know, I know… it’s not quite Easter yet but a bit of egg hunting can never come soon enough in my
opinion!
In groups of 3 they had to fill their egg box and once full they had done so they had the option of
‘free play’ or helping others. I loved how nearly all chose the latter. #teamworkandsharing

6E French Trip

La Maison Claremont, St ‘Omer

Last week was a very significant event for me and the French Department diary at Claremont Prep School.
I had the pleasure of taking 6E on their renowned annual French trip to la Maison Claremont in St’Omer
accompanied by Mr Wood. These trips are often known as the “growing up” trip and have such a huge
impact on our French syllabus and their Claremont journey.

The purpose of the trip is to broaden and enrich the children’s education with a cultural, historical, lin-
guistic and gastronomic experience of France and the French way of life. This popular trip is also an excel-
lent way to prepare the children for their speaking exams for Common entrance. Immersion is vital to
learning a language and it really paid off in this trip!

La Maison Claremont’s location makes it an ideal base from which to explore this historic region and cul-
tural and historical excursions. This time we visited Arc International (a glass and crystal factory) and went
on a factory tour of discovery to learn how glass is made. It is such a big part of the town’s economy and
way of life and the children were amazed by the process and seeing how things that they use and take for
granted were part of such a skilled and interesting process.

The children took part in a number of activities at la Maison Claremont and St’Omer. They enjoyed eating
at various restaurants, played bowling, completed shopping tasks, visited a typical French market and
worked on their study packs. All of which were conducted in French and were linked to the children’s
French topics. We ran language prizes throughout the day which kept all the children engaged and “on
their toes”.

The children came back so confident with their French and had such fun. It is no surprise that their French
as a result has improved. The perfect mixture! The pupils were often complimented by the members of
the public for their polite manners and for always trying to speak French and generally “giving it a go”!

I am pleased to say the trip was hugely successful. They were a fun group and a real credit to the school.
This was a particularly significant trip for me as it was my first visit to la Maison Claremont and whilst I am
from this area of France and know it well it was great to share this experience with such a lovely group of
pupils.

It was also Mr Wood’s (aka Monsieur du bois’”) last trip with us following over 50 trips as our dedicated
bus driver and helper. He was such a sage and asset to the trip I cannot thank him enough for his dedica-
tion and super contribution he made. He was very nostalgic throughout the trip and was very touched
when the children presented him with a lovely speech and crystal vase as treasured memento of his time
in the Nord-pas-de-Calais. He will be missed!

Such trips take an enormous amount of planning but seeing the children coming back so happy after a life
changing experience whilst improving their French at the same time makes it all worthwhile. We all have
so many happy memories to look back on for years to come, staff included!

I would like to thank all of the Year 6s for being such fun and for trying so hard with their French. Thank
you very much to Madame Hood for her constant hard work and commitment to keep these trips run-
ning. A big thank you to all staff behind the scenes such as Madame Cooper, the office staff and the won-
derful teaching staff who all work as a team to make these trips a success.

I wish you all a wonderful end of the term.

Madame Osborne

U13 Hockey v St Ronan's

1st VII 1 - 0 St Ronan's

The 1sts have had a fantastic season, with another hard fought win against a very strong St Ronans
team. The most pleasing aspect of the teams performance was there work rate off the ball. They got
plenty of bodies back in the 'D' and made it hard for the opposition to get shots off on goal. However,
James B was called upon a couple of times throughout and made some excellent saves. The goal came
from a quick counter attack putting Ned P through on goal who managed to poke the ball through the out
rushing keeper’s legs. Man of the match - Xander S

2nd VII 1 - 7 St Ronan's

St Ronan's 2nds VII were just as strong as their 1st VII and they played some very good Hockey. When
we had the ball, we played well and scored a good goal from Frank T. George O played very well in the
centre. Unfortunately we need to work harder in our transition and our reaction to when we lose the ball.

3rd VII 1 - 4 St Ronan's

The 3rds came up against a strong St Ronan's side who moved the ball quickly. We tried hard in spells
but we need to understand that we have to defend and clear the ball. We scored a really well worked
short corner routine when Joseph P worked the ball and reverse hit into the corner. Man of the match -
Sam C who didn't stop running.

4th VII 2 - 3 St Ronan's

This was a really tight game and the boys played really well. Jake S scored both goals and reacted well in
the 'D'. Jacob W played well up top and there was lots of effort from Austin R, and Marley N in the
middle. Man of the match - Jake S.

This was our last game of the season and sadly it was also Varnika’s last match for Claremont. She
thoroughly enjoyed captaining the team on the day. We are certainly going to miss this great
character next term. Bus journeys just won’t be the same.....but perhaps a little quieter! Best wish-
es, Varnika.

Yr 3 & 4 Training Gala v Bede's

Our last swimming gala of a busy term of fixtures saw our youngest swimmers go over to Bede's
Prep School for a training gala on Monday afternoon. Girls and boys shared races and competed over
1 length of front crawl, back stroke, and breaststroke whilst having a combined girls and boys med-
ley and freestyle relay teams. Amelie F was our swim captain for the gala and she also swam bril-
liantly throughout. Our Year 3 girls of Scarlett van E, Ava E, Maggie Mc and Ella S have all worked
really hard over the last two terms and have made great progress. Stanley Y and James R are our
sole boy representatives with Stanley Y being considered to swim up on many occasion. The Year 4
girls of Amelie F, Lily L, Summer C, Dora G and Sarah B are coming together to be a strong team.
The boys in Year 4 of Ben F, William S, Jack Gurney and James F have grown together into a handy
squad. Each bring their own strengths in a certain stroke, some offering more in other strokes. How-
ever, every one of them, did a sterling job and we look forward to more galas in the Summer.

U11B
Our shooters were on song this week, working really well together and forming a formidable duo. Between them,
Anna I-C and Olivia C managed to convert most opportunities into goals. Beechwood reacted to our attack and
this made for a closely fought 2nd half. However, Claremont were triumphant at the final whistle winning 10-6.
An enjoyable match to finish a successful season.
Player of the Match - Lizzie

U13B Netball v Gildredge House:

The U13B team competed in some ‘round robin’ matches away at Gildredge House this week. We played
four shorter games and the results were as follows:

Game 1: Won 2-3

Game 2: Lost 8-2

Game 3: Lost 1-0

Game 4: Won 2-3

Player of the Match this week was Eadie B.

U8A Girls’ Hockey v Dulwich Prep:

The U8A team have gone from strength to strength this term and I have been delighted with the pro-
gress they’ve made. They have played with enthusiasm and a great team spirit and they fully deserve the
success that they have had this season.

The girls continued their winning streak this week with a 5-0 win away at Dulwich Prep. Amarisa scored 4
and Maggie scored 1. Player of the
Match was Jia Jing.

Another great result, well done

girls!

1st Team Netball

This term the team have been working hard to gel as a team, it is not easy playing as a new team and
they have adapted well. Throughout the season they have been working on creating space on court,
driving forward for the ball and strong, fast passing. Lucinda has regularly been voted player of the
match for her constant outstanding work in defence, Eve & Issy have improved their shooting and
Elizabeth has been a valuable player in the centre court. They have faced tough competition showing
progression each week and had a great victory against Battle Abbey last week. Well played, every-
one!

U11 A NETBALL VERSUS BEECHWOOD SACRED HEART SCHOOL

The U11 A Netball team concluded a successful and enjoyable season with an im-
pressive 11-4 win over Beechwood School. Claremont worked brilliantly as a team.
They timed their movements to perfection and fed the ball into the circle with ac-
curacy and power, giving our shooters the opportunity to score some superb goals. A
special mention must go to Amelia McC who was voted our ‘Player of the Match’ and
to Lilirose H for being such a wonderful captain.

It has been my absolute pleasure to coach the U11 A team this season. They are a
delightful group of girls who always respond positively to all coaching points; they
should be exceptionally proud of their progress.

Ashford Prep School - Pre Prep Cross Country
We took 14 of our Year 2s over to Ashford last Friday for the annual pre-prep cross country. When I say
cross country it was run on an astro but a good job too as the grounds were extremely muddy and wet! The
girls and boys had to run three laps of the astro which worked out as 3 laps of a full size astro. They had
one target and that was could they manage to get round the course without stopping and they did exactly
that. We were extremely proud of all of them as they ran with great grit and determination. There were
some standout performances as Edward S finished 2nd and Fred C-B finished 5th. We shouldn't forget
however the main reason we went and ran at the event was to also raise money and awareness for a little
girl called Abbi Mifsud who died sadly passed away from a brain tumour, which is why the children all
sported pink wristbands! They also got a medal once they had finished and had a nice tea after for there
efforts, which can't be bad! Well done Year 2!

This week in 1D we have measuring weight in maths. We used scales to find out which object was
the heaviest and the lightest. Here are some of our pictures.

Ducklings &

Butterflies

This week the Ducklings have enjoyed starting their Easter activities which has been so much fun. They have
also enjoyed yellow playdough, yellow painting and listening to some lovely Easter stories.

The Butterflies have been busy doing lots of Easter activities including making bonnets for the Easter egg hunt
on Friday.

They have also enjoyed making bubbles which made great patterns on the floor and problem solving to complete
some animal puzzles.

Robins

This week in Robins we are looking at the colour yellow and made some lovely yellow pictures for our win-
dow display. We have also been super busy making some lovely flower mobiles to hang up in our room. We
started making our Easter cards to take home for our parents and carers as well. The Robins en-
joyed playing with the sorting teddies and trying to organise them into the correct coloured pots.

Hedgehogs

This week we have been busy creating lots of new age work for our display boards. We have also tried to
get outside as much as we can to enjoy the weather.

Badgers & Foxes

This week in pre-school we have been focusing on
our new topic and story 'The Three Little Pigs'.

On Monday the children enjoyed creating their
very own brick house for the little piggies to be
safe from the big bad wolf.

On Tuesday the children loved recapping the story
and interrupting this theme into their play, pre-
tending to be the three little pigs and the big bad
wolf, building their houses out of straw, sticks and
bricks and trying hard to blow them down.

On Wednesday all the children enjoyed their for-
est school adventure with Mrs Exley.

On Thursday they all sung their hearts out in music
practice remember the sign language to one of
their favourite songs 'The colours of the rainbow'.

And on Friday in forest school with Mr Newton and
Miss Greenfields the children loved building them-
selves a real life size shelter out of sticks and
twigs like the three little pigs.

Squirrels

This week the Squirrels have been busy making Easter cards, and practising for the egg hunt Friday.
We have also been exploring this weeks sensory tray, using dried rose petals and leaves. We even
went on a bug hunt in the garden to see if we could find any real insects.
