It is an inescapable fact that all children in the Prep School will have 28 Fri
examinations this term; indeed, the Year 8s are sitting mock exams this week.
This is the time for your child to ensure that they have complete notes in the

Weren’t we lucky with the weather and the children had a wonderful

A reminder to pupils in 6C and 6E
that their independent research
about the Gospel writers should have
been handed in by Wednesday, 19th
April. Please remember to follow the
instructions you have been given for
completing this task. The required
information is very specific and
under no circumstances should text
be copied and pasted directly from
the internet.

Mrs Burrows and Mme Austen look
forward to reading your assignments.

On behalf of all of my colleagues at the Childhood Eye Cancer Trust, I want to thank everyone
at Claremont for your involvement in Crazy Glasses/Wear Blue Day on Friday 17th March. I
collected the money raised during the Easter holidays, and you raised a superb £233. Sarah
Cookson very generously topped up the final total to £250.

We were delighted by how much the children got involved in designing and wearing their Crazy
Glasses, and if it has helped them to understand a little about the challenges faced by children
with retinoblastoma and resulting visual impairment then that's absolutely terrific.

A certificate is en route to Claremont, and Lyra will be getting her own personal one for coming
up with the idea in the first place and supporting the charity so well.

Thanks so much again for supporting CHECT. Mrs Smalldon.

Synopsis of The Magic Flute, by Galina.
Act one:
Tamino, a prince, is alone in the woods when suddenly, a
deadly serpent tries to attack him. He faints but is
saved by three ladies who are the of the Queen of the
Night’s workers. Tamino wakes up and hears someone
coming: it's Papageno, a bird catcher. Tamino assumes
that it was Papageno who saved him, and the two
become friends.
The three ladies return and explain they saved Tamino
not Papageno and they give him a picture of Pamina, the
Queen of the Night's daughter. Tamino falls in love with
the portrait, but is told that Pamina has been kidnapped
by Sarastro, a high priest. Tamino vows to rescue
Pamina. Once the Queen heard what Tamino had said
she arrives and offers Tamino her daughter's hand in
marriage if he is successful in rescuing her. For their
mission Tamino is given a magic flute and Papageno is given a set of magic bells.

Tamino and Papageno are led to Sarastro's temple by three spirits (Anna, Alfie and I play the three spirits!). Papageno
finds Pamina and he reassures her that she will soon be rescued. Tamino sneaks into the temple and goes in search of
Papageno and Pamina. They all run into Sarastro and his followers. It turns out Sarastro is kind and wise, and he

insists that Tamino must undergo a series of tests to prove himself worthy of Pamina.

Act two:
With the series of tests about to begin, Sarastro explains that he kidnapped Pamina
from her evil mother, the Queen of the Night, because Tamino and Pamina are meant to
be together. Papageno is also promised a wife if he successfully completes the tasks. In
preparation, they must remain silent so Tamino and Papageno are not allowed to speak.

In our production the magic Meanwhile, The Queen appears before Pamina and tries to

aria, "Der Hölle Rache", which translates as "A hellish rage
burns in my heart."

Tamino and Pamina meet again, but because he is not allowed to

speak, Pamina fears Tamino no longer loves her. The three spirits

(Anna, Alfie and I) reassure Pamina that Tamino does love her.

kill Sarastro.
In Opera South East’s version, it is set in a school where the Queen of the Night is the

head teacher and Sarastro is the crazy science teacher, the chorus are meant to be

teachers too there are children that play children and animals, they are non-singing but acting parts and they are on

stage the whole time helping with the production. As part of the set they use large boxes

to spell things out – like nature, wisdom and reason which are lyrics from one of Tamino’s

arias.

Sitzprobe Papageno and Papagena
On Monday 3rd April Anna Alfie and I went to a sitzprobe which means seated rehearsal. A singing their duet.
sitzprobe is when we sang our pieces with the orchestra for the first time! It was very
different to doing it with the piano because certain instruments are playing your part, in
our second piece I have to listen to the violas, Alfie has to listen to the cellos and Anna is

listening to the violins as we are singing in a three-part
harmony.

Tech Run

On Tuesday 4th April, we had a tech run which is when we did a full run through for the
first time on the stage in costume but it was just with the piano not with the full
orchestra, we stopped and started a bit because we were doing it mostly to check that
everything will run smoothly because the other children (the squad!) are using boxes to
spell things out so we needed to check that the words were spelt correctly. We also
needed to check all the lighting was right it was also a good time for us to practice

It was also a good time for the stage management to work out how long they had for some scene changes, they also
had to check the props were on the right side of the stage and the chorus had to work out where their positions were.

Dress runs
We had two dress runs. A dress run is when you do a full run with the orchestra, in costume
and no stopping and starting, it is treated like a performance but with no audience. On the first
dress run the opera singer who played the role of Papageno was at an audition so we had
someone who stood in for him but he didn’t wear the costume. The dress runs are a good place
to sort out any mistakes or problems before the performance.
Our costumes were rags and mortar board hats.

The Performances
The performances went very well. The audiences were quite big.
On the second night before the show we had a pre-show talk with
the audience when they could ask questions. A few of the other
children, Anna, Alfie, Miss Ashton who played Pamina and myself
were there. Also on the second night it was being filmed to make
into a DVD. I am very pleased with how we performed. My
favourite scene is when Pamina came on and we got to steal the
knife from her as she was about to stab herself. I am looking
forward to continuing with my singing as I am starting singing
lessons and I hope that I will perform in more operas in the
future. We got some photos with some of the principals such as
Papagena, Papageno, Tamino, Pamina and one of the three ladies.

Papageno.

Huge congratulations to Alfie, Galina and Anna as the Spirits and Lulu, Lucy,
Sapphire and Lucas as the Squad for working on this wonderful production.

Over the holidays, Saffy A, Izzy
W and Charlie W took part in 'The
West End Experience' held at the
White Rock Theatre with around
60 other children aged between 8
-18.
This Performing Arts five day
experience involved the children acting, singing and dancing to learn and
rehearse routines and sketches from west end shows including Aladdin, Billy
Elliott, Saturday Night Fever and Rock of all Ages. The children were
instructed by professional choreographers, creative and musical directors
from the West End, and enjoyed hearing professional singers performing on
stage. The week ended with the children putting on a fantastic two hour
musical show, and treating the receptive audience to a high standard of
entertainment.

Well done - what a fantastic experience you all had.

U13A v Bede’s

Claremont 191 - 250 Bede’s

POM (Bede’s vote) fielder: Mary W, batter: Tippi W.

POM (Miss Compton vote) fielder: Lucy B, batter:
Amber S.

Bede’s gave us a tough first game to the season but we responded well. We were first into field. Lucy B made a
fantastic catch. Julia M, Tippi W and Amelia C all took wickets when bowling. All the girls hit some good balls
when we were batting. To improve we must have more confidence and practice attacking the ball in the field. A
good first game, well done. Miss Compton.

U11 v Bede’s

The U11s had their first pairs cricket game of the season at home to a strong Bede’s team this week. Diya B
and Emma P were the highest scoring pair with 20 runs, followed by Olivia C and Phoebe M who scored 12.
Phoebe M also proved to be our most prolific bowler taking 1 wicket ( bowled ) for 0 runs!
Izzy W claimed the shot of the game with a great six off her first ball! A shot that also earned her "Player of
the Match". Final score: Bede’s 257 for 6, Claremont 214 for 8.

We made for the far woods on our first Forest School session of the Summer term in order to
marvel at the bluebells which have filled the ground of this hazel copse over the Easter holiday.
The children then collected small stout sticks and interesting things, such as fir cones and leaves
from the forest floor to make their own woodland mobiles.

This week the Kingfishers have been busy in our new safari role play pretending to be all sorts
different animals. We made reverse paintings by choosing different colours and mixing them with
our fingers and transferring our patterns onto paper. We have also enjoyed making paper chain
snakes and playing ping pong ball bingo in a salad spinner.

This week the Badgers have been busy exploring their favourite books - uncovering their
structure and common features. To help us do this, we have been drawing and describing our
favourite story characters. We have also been 'Number Hunters' hunting around for numbers
and then creating our own number line using numbers one to ten and investigating into numbers
beyond ten.

This week we welcomed everyone back into Hedgehogs after the Easter break, we also
welcome some new faces that have moved up from Robins . We have been focusing on lots
of group activities; circle games and fun activities to help the children settle in.

This week we have welcomed some new children into Robins; a huge welcome to Edie, George ,
Roman , Eli and Rosie! We have been busy exploring in the Robins room with all the lovely new and
exciting toys, we have also started making self portraits to go up on display. The Robins colour
this week is " multi-coloured".

A big welcome back to all of the Butterflies and Ducklings, we hope you all had a lovely Easter.
This week the babies have been enjoying the sunshine by playing outside in the garden in the sand
pit, water painting in the playground and playing on the bikes and slides. They have also enjoyed
looking at all of the lovely flowers growing, which they then enjoyed painting.

After a relaxing Easter break the Squirrels came back very refreshed and excited! We
welcome our new Squirrels from Hedgehogs this week, who are settling in very well.

The holidays are finished and everyone is back at the boarding house feeling refreshed and rested. The
Summer term is very important with all the upcoming exams. At the boarding house we create a
comfortable and quiet environment for our boarders, to prepare for exams and make sure they achieve
the best results possible. However, we will also try to do our best and fill this term with fun and
exciting activities for everyone to enjoy!

This term we are welcoming two new boarders: Mark and Matvii Petrov, who come to us from the
Ukraine. We hope that they will enjoy their time with us.
