What a wonderful sunny day we had for our
Sports Day this year. Well done to all the
pupils for taking part with such enthusiasm and
vigour. The parents were in good form too,
supporting the competition and enjoying their
picnics. Let’s not forget the staff: what a
fantastic team effort. The day was organised
down to the minutest detail. Special thanks to
Mr Brownbill, who master-minded the occasion
for all of us to enjoy.
There were many stand-out performances,
including Will de W who won the u12s 100m,
200m, 300m and 4x100m relay (Corinth). Well
done, Will.
Year Six have been considering the significance of 'Operation Dynamo' as part of their study focusing on the
Home Front in the Second World War.
They have considered the role played by 'the Little Ships' that supported the evacuation of over 300,000 men
from the mole at Dunkirk and the beaches at Bray Dunes.
Sadly, it has not been possible to arrange a visit to Dunkirk this year but we do have our very own 'Operation
Dynamo' experience in Hastings over the next week.
The Hastings Lifeboat, 'Cyril and Lilian Bishop' which went to Dunkirk in 1940 has been restored and is to be
given a permanent home in a specially designed dry dock opposite All Saints Church in Hastings Old Town.
The boat returned to Hastings after 'Operation Dynamo' having been credited with rescuing approximately
3000 troops from the beaches. She bore the scars of her experience, namely two bullet holes, made by German
bullets and some bomb damage which had caused her to capsize.
On Saturday, 17th June there will be a service of dedication for the boat at 10am after which she will be
hauled up All Saints Street by members of a local community group to the specially prepared dry dock.
There will not be an official group from Claremont attending this celebration but members of the Claremont
family may wish to witness it for themselves. As one member of Year Six commented this week, 'If only that
boat could talk!'

agree it’s very smart!
Is it really that time of year again, when we bid farewell and
all the very best to our lovely Year 8s who are leaving us for
pastures new. Most of them are going up to the Senior
School, while a few will be venturing off to completely new
schools. We wish you all the very best and hope you’ll come
back and visit us!
Yrs 3, 4 & 5 Swimming Gala v St Ronan’s
Claremont 181 - 166 St Ronan’s
The Years 3, 4 & 5 had there final gala of the year and it was a
fantastic way to finish after all the hard work they've put in over
the year. Our Year 3s, who have got some strong swimmers in this
group, won all their races bar a couple. Special mention to Alfie
Hawkes who swam up a couple of times throughout the year to help
the Year 4 teams. Also James Smith, James Furnival, Ben Field,
Ethan White who have all swam with great grit and determination.
We welcomed a new addition to the Year 3 girls team, in Amelie Foreman, and what a strong swimmer she is. Lilli
Lewis, who has swam brilliantly all year, has been supported really well by Sarah Biddle, Georgia Crossley, and
Dora Glass. The Year 4 boys have the smallest squad, with Orlando Soucek, Hector Wright and Henry Smalldon,
but never let the side down and are always there for every gala. The Year 4 Girls have really improved over the
year; Olivia Wilson, Liberty BransbyMiles, Tess Rowland, Summer McClelland and Anna Bourne have come
together to form a good squad. The Year 5 girls have some very strong technical swimmers in Galina Baxter and
Amelia Barrett and have proved a great match for any swimmer. Along with Emma Patel and Lizzie Simou they
have really come on and are all swimming to a really strong standard. Finally the Year 5 boys, who can boast two
relay teams and have some very good swimmers; Javier Gomez, Theo Davies, Seb Starr, Zac Buggy, Charlie
Willard, Rufus Bate, Oscar Rushant and Louis Lewis. It's been a sound year on the whole with great progression
from all our swimmers. Here is a breakdown of the results from Monday’s gala:

1st XI
The 1st XI had a tough outing v Rose Hill. Despite a good start where we managed to
dismiss their opening batsmen with some good bowling and catching, their middle
order fought back and dispatched some short, legside deliveries for 4s and 6s
regularly. Some lacklustre fielding added to the accumulating target, which was
eventually set at 101 to win from 20 overs. The Claremont response faltered from
the off, with none of the batsmen being able to occupy the crease and build an innings
in the face of some quality bowling. Despite a last wicket stand between Xander and
Max W, we fell well short of the target. Lost by 54 runs. Man of the Match Cohen
Luff - 4 overs for 8 runs.
Mr Brownbill
Colts A
Colts A 158 - 110 Rose Hill
Our Colts A team have showed great character over the last couple of weeks. Off the back of a really good win
against Vinehall we played Rose Hill and won the toss and elected to bat. We scored 158 and we batted with
great decision making and maturity. Arjun Kolani, Charlie Glasper and Barney Mitchell all retired having got 30
runs. Ben Rosling, James Gardiner, Ossie Wookey and Alfie Saunters all pitched in with some solid runs. We
then went into field and we bowled with good pace and accuracy. We picked up 9 wickets, wickets taken by
Ossie W 2, Austin Restell 2, Ben Rosling, Alfie Saunters and Arjun Kolani.
Mr Catt
Colts B
Colts B had a fantastic game against Rose Hill this week. In a pairs game we took 9 wickets, 3 and a catch for
Orlando Soucek. Skippered by Reuben Dickie the team limited our visitors to 173 runs an early partnership of
49 by Charlie Willard and William Bligh put us in a strong position. Orlando capped his fine performance with 27
runs, although Daniel Glass nearly outscored him after hitting 6 fours 5 consecutively. A mention to Ciaran Day
in his debut match who performed well with the bat bowled with some pace.
A fantastic afternoon, the boys’ behaviour was impeccable and they were a credit to the school. We scored 284
runs and won by 111 runs.
Mr Cook
Cricket Tournament at Dulwich Prep
The U11A's competed in a pairs cricket tournament at Dulwich Prep this week. Despite competing against teams
from Year 7, the girls represented Claremont well and they were commended on their cricketing ability by the
umpires. Although they didn't win a game the afternoon proved to be a great experience for all the girls
involved and they thoroughly enjoyed playing. I'm sure that we will return stronger next year.

U13A Cricket v Gildredge House
Claremont 81 - 113 Gildredge House
POM: batter - Julia Malcolm, bowler - Lucy Bate
We were up against some extremely good cricketers and we performed well. Fantastic bowling by Lucy who took
a wicket and also Mary, Amba and Cathryn. Our backing up into bat was good and enabled us to score lots of
singles. Some lovely shots played by Amelia C, Julia and Lucy.
Miss Compton.
U9 cricket v St Ronan;s
Claremont 227 - 262 St Ronan’s
POM: Esme Perrin
We hit some great shots and bowled well. Well done Aboo for scoring us a fantastic 6. Our target now is to stay
focused in the field and attack the ball.

U8/9 Rounders v St Ronan's
It was a friendly game of rounders against St Ronan's this week. Both teams played with great enthusiasm but
St Ronan's batting and fielding proved stronger overall earning them victory.
Player of the Match for Claremont this week was Georgia C who struck the ball very sweetly to score the best
rounder of the afternoon.

We have had a total success in
Cycling Club this term. Both
Alexander and Leo are now
cycling without stablerlizers and
gaining experience and bravery

exploring Claremont’s beautiful

Today Pre-Prep celebrated the emergency services and how they help us.
A huge thank you to Mrs Marsden for giving up her time to discuss the medical service and dialling 999 when needed.
We also had a visit from the fire services!
“People Who Help Us” day was very thrilling, in that a fire engine visited the school and the
children were helped to squirt water with the hose. assisted by one of the fire-fighting crew. In
the afternoon, Mrs Marsden discussed emergencies and what merited making a 999 call. The
children were a little reluctant to agree and rather unconvinced that losing your teddy was not
worthy of a ‘phone call. After that, we practised finding the numeral 9 on a redundant mobile
‘phone and made pretend calls to the emergency services to consolidate our learning.
Mrs. Marsden also spoke to us about different ways to keep ourselves safe. The topic of 'People
Who Help Us' and this encouraged us to create a new 'Role Play Zone'. We have now have a
veterinary surgery in the classroom.
To add to this excitement we have had our creative hats on, by drawing pictures and instead of
colouring them in, the children had to decorate their picture with different materials. In
addition to this, we have had great fun following dinosaur trails in our phonics session.
We have also practised our running on the track, trying to stay within the lines, and worked on
balancing skills in readiness for Sports day. We have chatted about being “good sports”.
This week the Hedgehogs have welcomed Hugo and Sophie into
the classroom. They have settled well and enjoyed playing with
their new friends. We painted some sunny pictures, built train
tracks together and the girls have had fun playing ball games
together.
In Robins, we have been looking at the colour
yellow, we have been busy making lots of
yellow pictures for the Robins’ door display.
We also have been making sandcastles and
swimming costumes for the Robins’ summer
display.
This week the Butterflies have had great fun making a fish tank for all the shells the children have
collected on the beach for our pretend fish. We have also been busy shell printing, sand sticking
and using all of our handprints to make our boat.
The Ducklings have enjoyed listening to a lovely story about a rainbow fish and then used their
hands to make fish. They have made beautifully rainbow towers using the Duplo and large blocks and
have enjoyed bubble play in the garden.
This week we have been looking at people who help us and got a visit from the fire officers
with their fire engine. We looked at all the different equipment they have and had our photo
taken in front of the engine. Also this week we have been practising our sports day by running
really fast and balancing bean bags.
All the boarders returned after half-term in happy spirits, with only a few
weeks left to go. However, straight after half-term we have entered exam
period. It is an incredibly busy and can be a stressful time for the
children, but handled with the right attitude and commitment it can be
part of shaping a fantastic goal for a successful future. However, hard
work and dedication must prevail.
Apart from the exams, the summer term brings so much more. Longer
evenings and occasional sunshine makes such a difference. The first week
after half-term was a big week for our boarding house. We welcomed
seven new boarders from Italy, France and Ukraine for our immersion
programme. We really hope that they will enjoy their time with us and
come back in September!
