About Retinoblastoma
Retinoblastoma is a rare and fast growing type of eye cancer that affects
babies and young children, mainly under the age of six. Around one child a
week is diagnosed in the UK. It represents 3% of all childhood cancers and
10% of cancers in babies under one. It is known as Rb for short.
Retinoblastoma has one of the best cure rates of all childhood cancers and
around 98% of children will survive but many will lose an eye in order to stop
the cancer spreading. Early diagnosis is vital to save a child eyes, sight and
life.
Signs to look out for are a white reflection or glow in a child’s pupil – which is sometimes seen in photos where a flash
has been use – and a squint.
About CHECT
The Childhood Eye Cancer Trust (CHECT) is the UK’s only charity dedicated to
helping people affected by retinoblastoma. They:
Provide support and information to families, after diagnosis, through treatment
and into adulthood.
Fund research into the prevention and treatment of retinoblastoma.
Raise awareness among health professionals and the public.
CHECT has been helping families for 30 years and rely on public donations.
You can find out more at chect.org.uk
Thank you for supporting our fundraising day on Friday 17th March.

Inspire
Arts Award pupils were delighted when they received their very own private gig
during Monday’s arts inspire session. Two freelance musicians wowed the children
with their talents in singing, violin and guitar. Charlotte Andrew, mostly known for
her appearance on The Voice demonstrated her ability to combine the sounds of
classical violin and rap. Her musician partner Andrew Vickery introduced the
children to the world of a session musician and talked enthusiastically about his
most recent experience playing for the artist and Brit nominee ‘NAO.’
There were questions about the music industry. How to break into it? Make a living
from it. Who to meet? And where to go. There was advice, hints and tips, plenty of
discussion and even an opportunity for the children to sing backing vocals.
Olivia Hazlewood described the session as: “The best experience I’ve ever had”
Amelie Spurway-Bishop said: “I really liked how Charlotte could play the violin and
rap at the same time and I loved that we were able to get involved in the
performance by singing backing vocals”
Hockey
1sts & 2nds v Battle Abbey
1st VII 7 - 0 Battle Abbey VII Hockey Captain, Sam W
The 1st VII carried on their good form with a good victory over a resolute Battle Abbey
team. Full credit to them as they didn't give up and made Claremont work for their goals.
We struck early through Sam W who scored 3 in this match to earn another mini hockey
stick for his hat trick! Ned P did one better scoring 4 goals in this game. However it was the
last goal that really deserves a mention as Battle Abbey were near our own goal, we
countered very quickly and played out through the back and sent Sam W in clear space. With an
on-rushing keeper Sam W looked up to square for a fast supporting Ned P to tap home.
Great awareness and unselfish play from Sam. The whole team with Henry S,Tom S and
Frank T setting up attacks throughout the game. Man of the match was Sam W and Frank T.
2nd VII 6 - 1 Battle Abbey VII
The 2nds, who can boast an undefeated start, with their second win after a win and a draw
already in their first 2 matches. The game started very well for us and goals were scored
from Max G who picked up a further 3 goals. Bert B, who has had a solid season to date for
the 3rds, played up and scored 2 goals. Max W scored the other as well as picking up the
Man of the Match award for the way he played in the centre and dictated the flow of the game. Special mention to James
B who returned to goal and he made a couple of very important saves. Well done to all the lads who played really well and
carry on playing some impressive hockey.
U9 Ashford Prep School Hockey Tournament
Our U9s went over to Ashford to play in a Hockey Tournament with 9 other schools. We were in a tough group with some
big schools and here is how we got on;
Claremont 1 - 1 Dulwich
Our first game ended in a draw with Luca R scoring the opener through excellent work from Harvey W who beat a couple
of players before hitting the ball in towards the penalty spot for Luca to sweep in. Unfortunately we couldn't quite clear
out lines and we conceded in the last few minutes of the game.
Claremont 1 - 1 Junior Kings
We started the brighter but somehow went 1-0 down in this game. Thankfully some quick thinking at a free hit meant
Harvey dribbled his way into the 'D' unnoticed and pushed the ball into the goal. A late flurry from Junior Kings but the
boys stood firm with some excellent tackles from Orlando S and Max W at the back.
Claremont 0 - 2 St Ronans
We then came up against the strongest team in our group, who also went on to play in the final. This was a good battle and
a lot closer than the score line suggested. Claremont had their chances but it was St Ronan’s that took their goals really
well.
Claremont 1 - 0 Kent College
Knowing a win was the only chance we had to progress, the goal was scored with virtually the last hit of the game from
Samie H who stayed up in the 'D' and a long hit up the field from Harvey found an unmarked Samie to sweep the ball in
first time. William B played a solid game in the middle worked tirelessly.
In the end the boys finished 3rd in the group, which meant we finished just outside the semi final positions by a single
point. Well done to all the boys and special mention to Harvey W for picking up most Man of the Match awards in this
tournament.
Swimming
Years 6, 7, & 8 Swimming Gala v Vinehall
Claremont 192 - 220 Vinehall
This was a very exciting gala with all races swam over 2 lengths. We were certainly a match for our counterparts in the
Back, Fly, Breast and Medley races. At this point, I wasn't quite sure which way the result was going. However the
freestyle races proved the difference but a great effort from all meant that it was very close in a lot of the races. A
great atmosphere throughout meant it was a fun and exciting gala. The last race really raised the roof as the Year 8 boys
freestyle relay ended in a draw but a great way to finish! We were a little light in numbers in the Year 7 and 8 girls which
meant again some Year 6 & 7 girls swam up to support those in Year 8, as well as some of the Year 8 girls swimming more
than they would normally. However it was a tremendous effort by all of our swimmers. Again our Year 6 boys and girls,
who can match up against any school, started off well. The boys march on with winning both their relays and the girls were
just pipped in the freestyle races. The Year 7s, who came up against their strongest year group, swam very well and a few
of the races where very tight calls. The Year 8s, who have Archie W and Amba S, both having excellent seasons to date,
winning a good chuck of their races. Here are a breakdown of the results:
CL VH
Year 6 Girls 34 31
Year 6 Boys 37 28
Year 7 Girls 24 41
Year 7 Boys 26 39
Year 8 Girls 31 44

Hockey
U8
The Year 3 girls went over to Bedes for a hockey festival where the girls played a round robin with various
Bedes teams. The girls also got the experience to play against some of the Bedes boys. Bedes provided a good
test which was equally match by Claremont on all levels. Claremont had many a stand out player with all girls
showing huge levels of improvement from week one. Bedes struggled to cope with the pace and drive from Amy
Lou. The dribbling skills from Lilli L provided many a goal
and a real threat for Claremont. As a whole Claremont girls
held there own against Bedes with no official score being
kept it was end to end hockey with plenty of goals being
scored at both ends. It was a great afternoon for the girls
to play Bedes and plenty of experience was gained.
Colts
Colts boys went to Eastbourne College on Monday for a
hockey tournament coming second out of 7 schools only
losing to Bedes. Scoring 9 goals in 6 games only conceding
2 we finished above St Andrews, Ardingly and Battle
Abbey. Well done boys!
U13 Girls In2Hockey County Championships
As this tournament falls in our netball season, we were pretty rusty, unsure of ourselves and slow to get going.
Our first three matches were against our strongest opponents and as a result we were punished for allowing too
much in defence. We did, however, clinch two valuable wins which pulled us up into 4th place overall. Special
mention goes to Phoebe who stepped up as U11 GK to 'save' the day!

U11 In2Hockey County
Tournament
The U11's played in the In2Hockey tournament in Eastbourne on
Monday. Despite the bad weather, the girls thoroughly enjoyed
the day and represented Claremont well.
Results:
V St. Andrews - lost 4-0
V Burgess Hill - lost 3-0
V Brighton College - drew 0-0
V Bedes - lost 4-0
V Battle Abbey - won 1-0 ( goal scored by Eve S)
V Ocklynge - drew 0-0
Claremont finished in 5th place - Ocklynge narrowly snatched
4th place ahead of us because of a better goal difference.
Hockey Esme B on route to score
POM Emilia W
U8B v Vinehall
I was MASSIVELY impressed by the team today. They all consistently
used the skills we have learned in order to beat defenders and move
into space. They also impressively kept their sticks down in the tackle
to win the ball. As a result we had lots of great opportunities to score
which we took well.
Final score - won 6-0
(Esme B x 3, Emilia W x 2
and Dora x 1) U8B Team
POM Emilia (voted by VH)
Year 4 Girls v Vinehall
The girls were in high
spirits before the game and
were excited to play.
Both teams played four
8 min quarters. The girls
played some good hockey and displayed some good stick skills.
The A team unfortunately went down 4-2 while the B team won 6-
0. All the matches were played in good spirits.
Football
1st team Football vs EBC
The boys went into the match knowing that they had to start well and keep the pressure on Eastbourne. This is
exactly what the team did and managed to take a 5-0 lead at halftime. The second half was almost a copy of
the first but Eastbourne took their chances. The match ended 6-3 to Claremont and Mishal was man of the
match scoring a hat trick.
Netball
U13A v Battle Abbey
The U13As lost their game against Battle Abbey 9-4. There was little to separate the two teams in terms of
possession but Battle Abbey's shooters were a lot sharper in the circle. Our lack of practice time this week due
to our participation in the In2Hockey County Tournament this week was
also evident. Julia M (GD) was awarded Player of the Match.
U13C's v Battle Abbey
The U13Cs have worked really hard in their games lessons this week and
this hard work paid off in their match away at Battle Abbey. We moved
the ball quickly and found space well. Natalia R played well at Centre and
Emma C put in a solid performance at Goal Defence. We intercepted the
ball well but now need to focus on gaining possession rather than just
knocking it away. Amelie S-B and Olivia H teamed up well in the circle. Final
score: 2-9 win to Claremont. Well played girls! Player of the Match was
Natalia R (C).
U11A v Moira House
A great game! Feisty and end to
end! We had a new attacking line up which was a little slow to gel but
nevertheless looks promising. The result was a narrow 7-5 loss which
was a shame as, on balance, we probably made the most goal scoring
chances.
POM Eve S (GA)
U11B v Moira House
The Hastings Musical Festival depleted our squads today and despite
our best efforts Moira House were too strong today.

Year 1 wrote lists in English and
measured pancake ingredients in
Maths before making our very own
pancakes.
It was so much fun, and we got to
eat our delicious work. Can you spot
your child?
The children thoroughly enjoyed finding out
about the animals and some even managed to
overcome their fears. The company 'Our
Amazing Animal World' were absolutely
brilliant with the children and we learnt very
funny facts about some of the animals. Our
Headmistress really enjoyed it too.
After the fun of our concert last Friday the Foxes pursued their ongoing interest in things
musical, by having a marvellous time on Tuesday when they were invited to a mini musical
workshop in main school. We are very grateful to Mrs Harris-Prior and her inspirational musicians
for their kindness in hosting this event. In Forest School we made the most of bright skies and
warm sun as we played creatively and imaginatively around the “Harry Potter tree”.
This week the Badgers have been celebrating Mr. Newton's favourite day... Pancake Day! We have
been reading stories this week focusing around pancakes and this lead us to making our own
puppets by thinking of characters from much loves stories. From here, the Badgers created
their own stories together using their puppets, demonstrating their fantastic imaginations!
We have also thought about what toppings we could put on our pancakes and to help us do this,
each child created their own pancake to put on our 'menu'. We had some very interesting
toppings; fire, bananas, bubblegum, rainbows and rain! To top off the pancake madness we took a
trip to Forest School where Mrs. Exley rustled up some fresh pancakes that cooked over the
fire as we walked around the forest, when we returned we ate many pancakes and they were
delicious!
This week we have looking at how big we are. Everyone looked at the numbers on the height
chart and compared themselves to their friends. We have also been drawing around numbers, and
been singing number songs using the whiteboard.
This week in Robins we have carried on looking at the colour brown, we had lots of fun painting some yummy
pancakes for Pancake Day, we also have been busy down on the Robins farm, making different farm animals
to go up on display. We also had lots of fun stomping around with the dinosaurs.
This week the Ducklings and Butterflies have been really busy mark making in the paint and magic
mud. The Butterflies enjoyed a walk down to the Jubilee Garden, where we used our spades to
make holes and patterns whilst looking for worms and insects.
Both rooms enjoyed pancake day where they flipped pancakes and ate lots if lovely pancakes at
snack time.
This week, we celebrated Pancake Day by flipping pancakes in a frying pan and we were
very good at it! The children have enjoyed making up tunes with different musical
instruments and the children decided that we are going to plant sunflower seeds for our
topic next week and we cannot wait to see them grow! Friday. We also had fun playing
in our very own park in the classroom.
Claremont U14A Boys v Bethany U15B Football
It was Claremont U14A’s first football match of the season, with many players getting their Claremont Foot
debut. It quickly became apparent that we were too strong for our opposition, taking an early goal to assert our
dominance against an older Bethany team.
We implemented our game plan very well and moved the ball with precision across the pitch from defence to
attack. It was a strong performance by Claremont who emerged convincing victors 13-2.
U14 & U15 Netball V Ashford School - Tuesday 7th February
We travelled to Ashford with four teams, U14 and U15 A/B. The long journey took its toll and the girls were
slow to get started handing Ashford the upper hand. By the time Claremont began to get their heads into the
game Ashford had already built up a convincing lead across all four teams. The girls played well and all teams
demonstrated that they are starting to think about playing with pace and creating space on court. It was
fantastic to have nearly every girl in year 9 & 10 representing the school in Netball. Well done to all!
U15 Lady Taverners Cricket Tournament
A group of Year 10 girls attended the Lady Taverners’ softball indoor cricket tournament. Considering that the
team had only logged 1 hour of practice since the end of the last season, the girls played exceptionally well. The
first game against Ratton was unfortunately lost on the last ball of the last over. The first match provided a
good warm up for the team and we started against Cavendish with great vigour securing a good win. Next up
came a strong A team from Gildredge House. We gave them a good game and provided them with a strong
challenge but unfortunately could not sustain our quality, succumbing to their pressure. Standout performances
included some excellent catches from Hollie P, great fielding from Issie B and Betty T. Additionally Bella G and
Issy B bowled well and Tabby Wylie was a great risk taker while batting. Well done to all!
1st/ 2nd Netball v Ashford School Thursday 9th February
The girls started with a positive mindset and set the pace in the games. By the end of the second quarter the
2nds had a great lead while the 1sts were 6 goals down. Both teams implemented excellent phases of play,
including lots of spacing and each girl worked to their maximum and showed great effort and attitude. Excellent
shooting from Mollie S in the 2nds and Anya W in the 1sts. A standout performance from Chiara K, who worked
tirelessly as GD preventing Ashford from making a comeback. This was a really impressive game by all players.

3rd/ 4th Netball v Ashford School Thursday 9th February
4th Team Report
Claremont commanded the game from the start, and were 2-12 up at halftime (largely due to some outstanding
shooting by Jen T who had scored all 12 goals at this point!). Although Ashford made some changes and came
back stronger in the 3rd and 4th quarters, the attacking trio of Ellie L, Rachel M and Kitty R dominated the
centre court, and Claremont went on to secure a 7-18 win. Well done, girls, great effort!

3rd Team Report
The 3rd team built on the good
progress made in the last few
weeks of training with Tamsin
at GK and Chloe GD making lots
of interceptions in defence. Great movement and driving towards the ball from the C/WD/WA in
the centre third resulted in some fantastic passes of play as the team really used the space available in the
court. This resulted in some great attacking play and gave the shooters a lot of opportunity to put some goals
on the score sheet. Jess and Zoe utilised the number of balls coming to them in the D, working well together as
GA and GS, scoring some exceptional goals. To improve, we must slow down and wait for the better pass, rather
than providing the opposition with opportunity to intercept through rushed passes. Overall, an excellent game
and fantastic result. Well played, girls.

A Fond Farewell to Fiona Taylor
We wish a fond farewell to one our founding members of staff this week. Previously working at the Prep School,
Fiona has been a huge part of the Claremont family for the last 19 years. Last week we held a Staff VS
Students Netball match in her honour, please see the photos below. We wish her all the best for the future and
hope she will keep us updated on her new ventures.

Victoria Pendleton cheered on her horse to victory at Cottenham yesterday. The dual Olympic cycling gold
medallist had her first point-to-point winner today while on crutches after fracturing her ankle in her
last race. Pendleton,36, who bought Vesperal Dream for £15,0OO, was down to ride the horse in the
13.45 ladies race but instead Izzie Marshall (above) won by a short head.
lzzie Marshall continues to impress. In the early part of every Point-to-Point campaign there always seems to
be at least one young rider whose performances mark him or her out as being of above average ability in the
jockeyship stakes.
Coming into that category this year is l7-year-old Izzie Marshall, whose Ladies' Open victory at Cottenham on
Saturday on Vesperal Dream was her third success from four outings in 2016/17, and her 6fth overall, having
scored twice last season. She had her first ride on Lord Multifix in December 2015, and opened her account on
Conkies Lad at Charing a year ago, following up on the same horse at Penshurst a few weeks later. Izzie was the
first to admit that Vesperal Dream's triumph was helped by her 5lb novice rider allowance, but her sense of
timing and her coolness in the finish impressed all present, not least her boyfriend Joe Hill, who himself showed
a nifty turn of foot as he ran alongside the course shouting her home, The Marshall family has long been
involved with the sport, and lzzie was always determined to follow her father Fraser and her brother Charlie
into the winner's enclosure. Her mother Charlotte had just one ride, but her preference is for the training side
of the operation. Izzie won ten races on her hunting pony, and won the South East title in her final year of Pony
racing. "I had Charlie's hand-me-downs," she laughed. She also competed in the Shetland Grand National series
and rode at Olympia. She is currently studying for 'A levels in Geography, Business and Psychology, with every
spare moment spent riding the horses at home, plus going to Nick Pearce's yard at the weekend. She has also
ridden out for the Marshalls' neighbour, Di Grissell.
Her aim this season is to win the National Novice title she is one ahead of Laura Thomas at the top of the table
but she will be missing the action in 2017/18, when she will be having a ski season during her gap year before
going to University. She has already had some offers of a place to read Business Management, with her
preference to remain in the M4 corridor and the opportunities that area affords for riding out, while she has
every intention of dusting off her racing saddle when she returns from the slopes!
