Nursery News........................20
I am pleased to (finally!) send you the final newsletter of the term. As
you will see, it is a bumper issue, reflective of all of the exciting things that we Contact Us
packed in to the last eight days of term. Claremont Prep and Nursery
I think that it is fair to say that performances dominated the calendar. School
We had a bumper week starting with an impossibly endearing Badgers, Foxes Ebdens Hill
and Reception Nativity. It was amazing to see the tiniest performers delivering Baldslow
their lines with confidence and aplomb. I could only wonder at the hours spent St Leonards-on-Sea
practising lines – both at school and at home – to enable children of this age East Sussex
achieve this level of composure. It was a most impressive feat. Sacrificing none TN37 7PW

Hard work – this time that of FOCS and our supportive parental body –
was clearly at the heart of the success of the Christmas Bazaar this year. o.uk
There were a huge range of stalls, with a real emphasis on unique and beautiful- Newsletter Editor:
ly-made products. It was certainly possible to cross off a lot on one’s shopping cluni.burton@claremontscho
list! Father Christmas was popular in his grotto, with children excitedly queuing
up to see him. The café on the stage worked well, as parents could survey their ol.co.uk
offspring while enjoying mulled wine and a range of delicious food. The raffle
proved as exciting as ever, with some extraordinary prizes. I am indebted to
Mrs Iversen, the FOCS committee and all of the parents who worked so hard
on this excellent event. We are also grateful to FOCS for funding the perfor-
mance of The Nutcracker during our final week.
The Winter Warmer was another popular event at the end of this term,
drawing the largest crowd that I have seen. We were treated to a really rich
variety of sketches, songs, poems, dance and choirs. The sheer diversity of
talent was incredibly humbling and it was a really uplifting way to (almost) end
the term. However, we still had the Carol Service in Battle to bring us to a fit-
ting conclusion, where we all enjoyed a very musical Nine Lessons and Carols.
There were some beautiful small group and solo performances, showcasing
some of our most talented singers. I was particularly impressed by the ‘On the
First Christmas Day’ carol, composed and conducted by Galina Baxter (Year 6)
for the choir that she started with Rachel Waters (Year 8). I would also like to
thank all of this year’s readers.
It was a fitting end to an incredibly busy, and incredibly satisfying,
Michaelmas term. Staff and pupils deserve a well-earned break and I look for-
ward to seeing all of you on January 8th. From everyone here at Claremont, we
hope you all enjoy a very merry festive season.

Olivia has recently joined the Lewes Hockey Club and
this weekend played in an U10 girls tournament at
Eastbourne. She played against Burgess Hill, Brighton
and Eastbourne and her team won the tournament
which was really exciting as it’s her first club hockey
tournament.
Alfie Saunters has been offered a place in the 5H puppet show in French!
National Youth Boys Choir of Great Britain as a
treble. This is an incredible achievement, as
there is a highly competitive audition process
that he has won through.
Year 4 have been busy sewing Christmas decorations!
Geography Bake Off
Landforms at coasts were carefully recreated by Year 8 in a recent Geography lesson.
Stacks, stumps, headlands, bays, arches, coasts and longshore drift demonstrated in cake,
marshmallows, jelly, fudge, fondant icing, crispy bakes and biscuits.
All extremely delicious!
Rehearsals in full swing for the Winter Warmer
Here are Lucas, Eva, Edward, Tess, Anna, Olivia, Galina, Anna, Lizzie, Adam, Chantalle, Joseph, and Daniel
rehearsing their song, L’étoile de Noël, Viens, regarde! and Vive le vent! for the Winter Warmer. Très bien to
these brave and passionate children who have given up their breaks lately to show their talent for singing in a
new language. It will be a joy to listen to the Spanish Year 7 group ‘Los 12 días de Navidad’.
Joyeux Noël and Feliz Navidad, everyone!

Christmas Bazaar!
Thank you everyone for coming and make the annual
FOCS Xmas Bazaar so special. We had some amazing
stall holders selling beautiful items, volunteers who
worked very hard throughout the day and the fantas-
tic raffle prizes that were donated.
I also have to say a big thank you to my committee for
all their hard work and commitment. Plus the many
teachers who are always on hand to give their support.
And finally to Mr Beaumont for allowing us to use the
theatre and always being very supportive of the event.
I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New
Year!

Spanish News….!
The Spanish Department have been very busy this term. It is hard to think that this is the first term of studying the
subject here at Claremont School and indeed my own first term. I could not be more proud of the pupils in Year 6 -8 who
have embraced this new, vibrant and fun language with “gusto”.
What a fantastic term it has been….. we have had flamenco days, European Day of Languages events, Spanish music and
percussion, a fun Spanish market and picnic workshop for open day and of course the pupils have been working very hard
indeed. The winter warmer was an excellent way to show case some of their Spanish with the 12 days of Christmas / Los
doce días de navidad which proved very comical. They have also covered so much vocabulary and grammar already and I am
very excited about watching them blossom even further next term.
Spanish Enrichment has also proved very popular and the juniors have made a super start to learning the language and it is a
real joy to end the school week with them each Friday. New pupils are most welcome next term!
The pupils seem to have got the perfect balance of having fun, but to also succeed in their language learning and I was so
impressed with their first module results. Their hard work and motivation really paid off. Well done!
It is so nice to have both French and Spanish on our curriculum. French with Mme Hood continues thrive and the children
seem to enjoy the benefits of learning both languages. I certainly enjoy teaching them both!
I wish you all “Féliz navidad” and look forward to welcoming pupils back for el ao Nuevo /2018!

1L have been writing recipes for salt dough and making festive stars to hang on the tree!
We are looking forward to painting them. Mixing the ingredients was super fun and a bit
gooey!
1L enjoyed a bit of imaginary Christmas shopping and were all able
to find the right amount of coins to pay for their goodies in Mrs
Luff’s imaginary maths shop!
This week 1D have finished exploring the fantastic story of Beegu! Here are our excellent story
boxes with our very own models of Beegu.
In 1D we have been talking about the weather in geography. We have been completing a weather
diary each day and we have measured how much rain has fallen, using our rain collectors. We found
that it rained 10mm over the week. In 1D we are hoping for some snow!!!
Carol Singing!
Cats, angels and stars!
The Pre Prep, Badgers and Foxes children were
treated to a performance of ‘The Nutcracker’ on
Monday morning as part of their countdown to
Christmas activities. They all sat and listened beau-
tifully, and were left humming the songs from The
Nutcracker Suite for the rest of the afternoon!
A huge thank you goes to the ‘Friends of Claremont
School’ (FOCS) for funding this production.
RW thoroughly enjoyed performing their Nativity play this year. 'Shine Star, Shine' is a very sweet
story about a star that cannot shine, the other stars tried everything they could to get her to shine
but nothing worked, that is until they led her to the stable where Jesus had been born. The children all
performed beautifully and sang their hearts out..
Olivia, Elsie and Matilda have achieved their level 2 swimming Thanks to FOCS for fund-
badges! ing a brilliant production of
the Nutcracker for Pre
prep!
Claremont Nativity Show!
Week 14
Monday was our busiest day by far this week! It was our Nativity performance!! All of the Foxes
were amazing in their play! We also like to thank all of our parents and family members that
came to see our incredible production. On Tuesday we enjoyed playing lots of ring games with
Rachel in the playground. On Wednesday we really enjoyed having hot chocolate around the camp
fire; eating biscuits and marshmallows all together. On Thursday we all enjoyed playing in our
new Christmas home corner; singing carols and cooking a Christmas dinner. Friday we loved bak-
ing some yummy Christmas biscuits to take home and share with our families.
This week we have had an exciting week in Badgers. We have had a wonderful time per-
forming for our nativity. The children did so well to sing, say their lines and have the
confidence to be on stage and perform to everyone! The children thoroughly enjoyed
themselves and we hope the parents did too! In addition to this excitement, we have
been baking muffins with some special treats inside, this helped us develop our problem
- solving skills and our gross motor skills. We have also had fun outside at forest school
and throughout the day, playing together, creating campfires, drinking hot chocolate
and eating some tasty biscuits!
Week 15
On Monday we all got very excited because it began to SNOW! The Foxes enjoyed exploring the snow and
watching it lie in our playground.
On Tuesday we had a very busy day! Firstly we had an amazing visit for the one and only Father Christmas!!
He kindly gave us all a present for being so good this year in pre-school.
After this we got to have a yummy yummy Christmas dinner and a Fantastic Fox Christmas party!

playing in all the leaves and playing hide and seek with our teachers.
On Thursday we joined with Badgers and enjoyed our Christmas activities making lots of shapes with play
dough including snowmen and Santas too.
On Friday we also joined with Badgers for another day and we had so much fun! We enjoyed using the home
corner and pretending to be busy elves wrapping lots of presents for Christmas.
This week the Hedgehogs have been focusing on all things Christmas. We have
been doing festive arts and crafts, and discussing how we celebrate Christmas in
our homes. We explored the magic mud and tried to build snowmen with it.
This week we have been busy doing lots of Christmas craft activities. we
decorated paper to wrap on some boxes for our home corner. we have also
started having settling in visits into Hedgehogs for those who are moving up
after Christmas.
This week in Robins we have been
finishing our lovely Christmas
craft activities to take home. We
