ARTS & Culture
The leadership of Sauk Prairie understands that through art, creativity and talent are nurtured, resulting in a quality workforce and community. One of Wisconsin’s most proli c writers and editors, August Derleth (1909-1971), made his home in Sauk City. Derleth wrote historical novels of Wisconsin, poetry collections, horror and fantasy novels and much more. The community is proud to boast his residency and today showcases many other artists and their art forms.
The River Arts Center is a 500-seat theatre and gallery space. The River Arts Center hosts many school and community functions. The Sauk Prairie School District is committed to arts education and supports a strong music and art program within the district. The Sauk Prairie Music Association (SPMA) is a non-pro t, charitable and educational organization, which provides assistance and funding for the maintenance of the music program at Sauk Prairie High School. This association supports all classroom and co-curricular music activities, which include: Concert Band and Choir Programs, Marching Band, Musicals, Madrigal Dinners, as well as Executive Session and YTBN Show Choirs.
With 20 years of commitment to performing arts, the Sauk Prairie Theatre Guild produces two to three plays each year at the River Arts Center and Park Hall. One of the yearly plays is focused on youth in the Sauk Prairie community, while the second play each year showcases adult talent.
WWW.SAUKPRAIRIE.COM | 19
ARTS & CULTURE
Responsible for raising a portion of the capital for the River Arts Center through a grassroots campaign, River Arts Inc. (RAI) incorporated and began the journey of inspiring, enriching and educating the Sauk Prairie community about the arts.
RAI has been instrumental in bringing in national touring exhibits like “Between Fences” a collaboration with the Smithsonian Institute and “Wings & Water” a biennial juried exhibit featuring artists from across the country. To further make a commitment to art and the community, RAI opened a retail gallery and ticketing space on Water Street in 2011, called River Arts on Water, in downtown Prairie du Sac. The space features over 35 local artists and is another
way to connect the community with the arts excellence and programming in the area through house concerts, art openings, and more. In 2017, RAI expanded further and opened a state-of-the-art studio where both regional and nationally recognized artists teach a wide variety of classes for both adults and youth. Today, RAI hosts over 100 events and is heavily involved in art and amenities for the Great Sauk State Trail.
Another business taking the arts to the next level is Pro Motions Signs
& Art. Focused on highlighting the beautiful scenery that surrounds this area, Pro Motions Signs has been creating custom signs, banners, logos, digital prints, wall murals, clothing, paintings, and more since 1992!

History
Named after the Sac Indians, the American Indians living and farming here in the 1700s, the area is still known today as Sauk Prairie. Jonathan Carver, an English explorer, declared the Sauk Indian
village as the “largest and best built Indian town” he had ever seen. With the introduction of European immigrants and already-established “Yankees” from the eastern states, the growing villages developed their own identities. The southern village became Sauk City and is the oldest incorporated village in Wisconsin. It was founded by the colorful Hungarian Count Agoston Haraszthy who, in 1847, built what is today Wollersheim Winery before heading to California where he became the father of the California wine industry.
Winding your way up Water Street along the Wisconsin River, you will nd t e nort ern village w ic ke t t e renc r trading name o Prairie du Sac, “Prairie of the Sac Indians.” Prairie du Sac is home to man ne st les o arc itect re. e ma estic omes along t e tree-lined Park Avenue and Water Street take visitors back to early days along the river, where homeowners could see the steamboats dock- ing from their home’s tall cupolas. Gazing across the riverbank, Eagle Island, located mid-river in the downtown corridor of Prairie du Sac, is a one-of-a-kind location where Bald Eagles roost each winter
as they soar along the bluffs.

Today, the state’s only free ferry, Colsac III, named for the two counties it crosses—Columbia and Sauk—is still a huge draw during its open season, from April through December.
Sauk Prairie Area Historical Society
The Sauk Prairie Area Historical Society is located in the Tripp Heritage se m in downtown rairie d ac. ilt in t e ri as it is referred to locally - is a hands-on starting point to explore the people, places, and natural wonders of the Sauk Prairie region. The Tripp’s rotating exhibits, one-of-a-kind displays of over three hundred mounted birds, and 7,000-year-old bison, discovered by 7-year-old Joshua Bradford in the nearby riverbed, highlight the unique story of this riverside comm nit . e ri se m is o en ear ro nd rida s

HISTORY
August Derleth
February 24, 1909 - July 4, 1971
August William Derleth was a writer and anthologist from Sauk City. Derleth was
a leading American regional writer of his day, as well as proli c in several other genres, including historical ction,
poetry, detective ction, science ction, and biography. He was the founder of Arkham House and the rst book publisher of the writings of H. P. Lovecraft. He’s also known for his own contributions to the Cthulhu Mythos genre of horror, which helped bring supernatural ction into hardcover print in the US.
Derleth had an idyllic childhood with strong family ties. His rst piece of ction was written at age 13. He wrote more than 150 short stories and more than 100 books during his lifetime. He penned a ten volume series (Steve and Sim books) based loosely on his teenage adventures with his best friend Hugo Schwenker, with whom he would sh and explore their beloved Wisconsin River. Central to Derleth’s writing career was the Sac Prairie Saga. This was a series of historical ction, poetry, journals and naturalist writings intended to capture the essence of Wisconsin and its inhabitants, past, present and future. His early work on this project earned him the prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship in 1938.
Badger History Museum
The Museum of Badger Army Ammunition is located on the site of the former Badger Army Ammunition Plant. It is 1400 sq. ft. of exhibit space that shares more than 70 years of stories that range from land owners whose land was taken for Badger Ordnance Works (BOW) through construction and production for three wars. Who were the families that lost their farms/homes/cottages to the BOW? Where did they go? Were they paid for their land? And what was the Army’s procedure for acquiring this land? Find out the answers to these questions, by visiting this FREE museum Tuesday – Saturday from 10 – 4 pm.

DEVIL’S LAKE
The Sauk Prairie Riverway area includes
the southern portion of Devils Lake State
Park, the second most visited park in Wisconsin and one of the tops in the nation. There are many campsites available at Devils Lake, as well as two swimming beaches, a pet beach, and breathtaking hiking trails. Devil’s Lake State Park is the perfect place for some low-key shing.
LAKE WISCONSIN
Lake Wisconsin features many varieties of sh, making it a sherman’s paradise. Lake Wisconsin is a 10,000 acre lake with 52 miles of shoreline, and together the lake and river have more than 18 miles of navigable waterway with a depth that varies to a maximum of 40 feet.
WISCONSIN RIVER
Canoeing and shing the Wisconsin River is an extraordinary experience. Boaters love to stop at the many sand bars for a swim, picnic or even to camp at night. Camping on the sand bars is legal, while boaters must stay off the banks of the river, as much of this is private land. The Sauk Prairie area features two experienced guide companies who can customize your trip, Bender’s Bluffview Canoe Rental and Blackhawk River Runs. Sauk Prairie School District
Education
It takes an exceptional
educational system to produce
exceptional citizens. The Sauk Prairie School District is one of these high-quality school programs. The district believes in providing opportunities for lifelong learning for the entire community. Small class sizes at the elementary level, unique learning and co-curricular opportunities for all 4K-12 students, an unmatched summer school program, and year-round community education offerings make the Sauk Prairie School District one of the strongest in Wisconsin. Tremendous support for quality education and for the activities offered by the district is evident by community involvement and participation.
Sauk Prairie School District currently enrolls 2,840 4K-12 students residing within its 240-square-mile service area, which includes the villages of Merrimac, Prairie du Sac, Sauk City, and all or part of 13 towns. Since 2014, the school district has renovated existing and constructed new school facilities that will serve the current and future educational needs of the community. This included the construction of a new elementary school in Prairie du Sac, Bridges Elementary, and the expansion of Tower Rock Elementary for students in the western part of the district. The River Arts Center, a 500-seat performing arts theatre and gallery space, is attached to the high school and provides programming for students and community members. To foster lifelong learning, the district also owns and maintains the Sauk Prairie Community Education Center.
Community Education has been a part of the Sauk Prairie School District since 1987, providing programs for our youngest to the oldest citizens. Community Education improves our quality of life by creating opportunities for community members – individuals, schools, businesses and public and private organizations – to become partners in addressing community needs. Community education utilizes facilities beyond the traditional school day for the purpose
of providing academic, recreation, health, social service, and work-preparation programs for people of all ages.
