A Message From

John S. Peterson, President KCGA

When ye are in the service of your fellow beings, ye are only in the service of
your God. ~ King Benjamin

On behalf of all the members of the Kiwanis Club of Greater Anaheim, I
welcome you to the 44th Annual Orange County High School All-Star North vs.
South Baseball Game. Welcome to the Senior High School athletes who have been
carefully selected as the best of the best in Orange County. Thank you to the coaches,
faculty members and administrators who labor so tirelessly to keep high school
athletics viable in Orange County. A special thank you to our athletes’ parents,
families, and friends who have done so much to help bring these young men to this
special honor. And finally, I want to thank the volunteers, sponsors and advertisers
who make this game possible.

KCGA member Cliff Rothrock whose love for athletics and education led to the start of this great tradition,
originally inspired this event 44 years ago. It is a testament to his vision that so many past participants have gone
on to much higher achievements in college baseball and as professionals and today the tradition lives on
through the dedicated service of members of the Kiwanis Club of Greater Anaheim.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with the Kiwanis family of organizations, let me give you a quick overview.
Kiwanis International is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to “changing the world one child and one
community at a time”. KCGA does this by:

• Supporting the training of youth in leadership and volunteer skills through Key Clubs, K-Kids and
Builders Clubs.

• Preparing and providing over 1500 meals for Special Olympic athletes annually.
• Sustaining a transitional housing apartment through the Anaheim Interfaith Shelter.
• Presenting in excess of $25,000.00 in scholarships to high school seniors annually through the KCGA

Foundation.
• Adopting a Neighborhood in conjunction with Anaheim Beautiful and the City.
• Supporting orphanages in Mexico through donations to Corazon de Vita.
• Providing not only money, but service to over 25 community non-profit organizations.
KCGA is always looking for new members who want to serve their community. We invite you to come join us, as
our guest, at one of our weekly Thursday morning breakfast meetings. 7:30 AM at the Clarion Hotel in Anaheim.
For more information, call the number in the form below or visit our website at
http://greater-anaheim.kiwanisone.org. Come join the fun! There are Kiwanis Clubs located throughout Orange
County and one may be a fit for you.

Once again, on behalf of our 2011 All-Star Baseball Game Chairman, Will Cornell, the committee and all of us at
KCGA, welcome to Glover Stadium and enjoy this very special game.

Congratulation All-Stars!

The voice you hear – Dr. John Dahlem

Announcing the All-Star Game tonight for the 31st straight year is
Dr. John Dahlem, retired Principal of Loara, Kennedy and Western High
Schools. John is a decorated veteran of Vietnam. Dr. Dahlem is a
National, State of California and Orange County member of the
Wrestling Hall of Fame. He was the National Wrestling Coach of the
Year in 1979. John is the Past President of the CIF Southern Section
and is currently writing a history of the CIF-SS which can be found on
their web page. He keeps active in the wrestling community by
conducting clinics, writing articles and participating on numerous
committees. Along with announcing this game, Dr. Dahlem also has
helped announce the California State CIF Track and Field Finals.

John resides in Huntington Beach with his beautiful wife Sioux, the
retired Principal of the Braille Institute. They have two sons, both of
whom graduated from Stanford with graduate degrees from Harvard
and UCLA. John is an avid mountain climber who has climed all 7 of
the Seven Summits including reaching the summit of Mt. Everest in
May of 2010; the second oldest American and the oldest Father-Son
combination to ever stand atop the world. John loves TRIVIA . . . so be
prepared tonight to test your memory on trivia questions from the press
box!

From the very beginning, the special evening
meeting of the Kiwanis Club of Greater Anaheim was
devoted to the recognition of the twenty-two All-Star
players and three Coaches of both the North and
South Teams and of course, the Umpires.

The KCGA presents each player with an 8x10
color photograph of his team, an All-Star T-shirt, a
Certificate of Participation, and if he’s lucky, a hug
from Miss Kiwanis All-Star.

One of the highlights of the meeting is the
recognition of parents, teachers, coaches and friends
who helped the players reach their goals both in
sports and education.

This year’s All-Star Banquet was held at the
Anaheim Community Center on June 1st, with 200
players, coaches, umpires, parents and friends in
attendance.

The 44th Annual Kiwanis
Orange County

Youth Baseball Award
“Mike Curran”

Esperanza High School, Anaheim, California

Mike Curran began his Head Coaching at St. Paul High School in Santa Fe, CA where he coached for six
years compiling a record of 100-15. For the past 30 years, Curran has coached at Esperanza High School in
Anaheim, CA winning 544 games while losing only 259 in a very competitive conference. His overall record of
644-264 is one of the outstanding coaching records in California.

Esperanza teams have benefited a great deal from the continuity of Curran's excellent coaching that has seen
them ranked continually at the top of Orange County Baseball as well as Nationally. His teams have captured
11 League Championships, while advancing to the CIF play-offs 21 over the past 25 seasons. Six times,
Esperanza played in the CIF finals and they were Champions in 1986, 1993, and 1997.

Coach Curran has received many honors including the CIF Coach-of-the-Year three times, National High
School Baseball Coaches Association District 8 Coach- of-the-Year three times, and National Coach of the
Year in 1998. Curran was named the Orange County All Star Head Coach in 1986 and 1993 and received the
California Coaches Association Service Award in 1998. He was inducted in the St. Paul Hall Of Fame in
recognition of his first years of coaching at the School. Coach Curran has been instrumental in upgrading the
Esperanza baseball field, which exhibits a new playing surface, state of the art batting cages, and an
electronic scoreboard.

One of the impressive aspects of Coach Curran's baseball life has been his involvement with the NHSBCA
where he has served on the Coach-of-the-Year Committee for three years and on the Hall-of-Fame
Committee for four years. His insights and his understanding of important values in the game of baseball
make him a very valuable member of these committees. Twice, Curran has delivered clinic talks at the
National Conventions related to practicing baseball and his willingness to share ideas are unending and is a
Charter Member of the Association.

Key Club International

Kiwanis Club of Greater Anaheim Sponsors local Key Clubs

Key Club International is the largest co-educational high school service organization in our Nation and Internationally. A local Key Club must be
organized and continuously sponsored by a local Kiwanis Club. Key Clubs are self-governing and elect their own officers, determine their service
projects and fund-raisers and operate under the rules of the school administration. Key Club objectives include the objectives of Kiwanis.
Key Clubs are unique for their aim in the development of initiative, leadership ability and good citizenship practices of its members. Each individual
Key Club is a member of the International Organization with his or her own annual District, International programs and conventions. Each Key
Club’s service activities are designed for their local high school and community needs.

The “Key” in Key Club stands for “Kiwanis Educating Youth”.
The Kiwanis Club of Greater Anaheim sponsors seven Key Clubs. The newest one is at the all girl Rosary High School.
KCGA also sponsors clubs at Anaheim High School, Katella High School, Loara High School, Savanna High School,
Servite High School, and Western High School.
Each Key Club meets once a week, on campus, with an Academic and Kiwanis advisor present. Just as their title implies
they are there only to advise. The students run the meetings and present projects which their board has approved. These
leaders have been trained and many have attended the yearly District Convention which alternates between Sacramento
and southern California.
KCGA’s Key Clubs are in Division 30 South of the California-Nevada-Hawaii District of Kiwanis International.
Key Club’s Motto is “Caring Our Way of Life.” The members of the Key Club demonstrate this caring by raising funds for
various organizations with which they partner: UNICEF-Operation Uruguay through the Trick or Treat for UNICEF raised
more than $5 million dollars over the year, most recently raising more than $3 million to fight HIV/AIDS in Africa; March of
Dimes-Key Club International began partnering with the March of Dimes in the 60’s and continues to collect dimes in
hopes that someday children will be born free of birth defects; and Children’s Miracle Network-this non-profit raises money
to benefit hospitalized kids.
KCGA Key Clubs volunteer in local events such as the Disney Half-Marathon, Relay for Life, the Anaheim Children’s Art
Festival, the Anaheim Halloween Festival, Anaheim Paint Your Heart Out, the Kiwanis CHOC Carnival, and supports
Kiwanis projects such as this All Star Baseball Game; providing lunches for the Orange County Special Olympics
Regional Track Meet; and our annual music festival/pancake breakfast in December.
Key Club turns 86 this year and the members continue to pledge to uphold the Objects of Key Club International, to build
their home, school, and community; to serve their nation and God; and to combat all forces which tend to undermine
these institutions.
The Kiwanis Club of Greater Anaheim is proud of its Key Clubs which inspire by their shining service and give everyone
faith that the future of this nation is in good hands.

The Kiwanis Club of Greater Anaheim has participated
in the Special Olympics since it began in Orange

County in the early seventies,
thanks to the efforts of Ralph
“Pete” Esten. Through 1997,
Pete “ran the show” for
KCGA, taking care of all thee
details necessary for us to
provide free lunches to
the competitors, coaches and
counselors. On May 21 of this
year over 1,400 lunches were
served at the Special Olympics
Regional Games held at
Irvine High School. It’s
estimated, since the Kiwanis
Club of Greater Ahaheim
intiated this program, over
32,000 free lunches have
been provided.
