A Message From
Paul Bostwick
President of the Kiwanis Club of Greater Anaheim
A warm welcome to this 53rd Annual Orange County High School
All-Star Baseball Classic, sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Greater
Anaheim.
Decades ago, Cliff Rothrock, a dedicated educator and Kiwanis
member, challenged the Kiwanis Club of Greater Anaheim to
sponsor an event which would showcase the talented athletes in
Orange County. Over the years the competition has grown and many
outstanding young men have played in the KCGA Orange County All-Star Baseball Game and
more than 145 of them have made it into the Majors! This evening we shall again see an
exciting game featuring Orange County’s finest.
As the high school career of these young athletes comes to a close, we recognize that the
coaches and volunteers spent countless hours to make the game this evening a memorable
experience. Parents and family members are a special support system and they share in the
accomplishments of these young men. The athletes are an inspiration to all of us to do the best
we can.
Many of you have heard of Kiwanis International and some have not - Kiwanis International is
a global organization of volunteers dedicated to improving the world one child and one community
at a time. The Kiwanis Club of Greater Anaheim is the local part of Kiwanis International. I’m proud
to say that KCGA is one of the most active clubs in Orange County. KCGA sponsors through its
Service Leadership Programs, 6 high school Key Clubs, an elementary K-Kids Club, Terrific Kids
at the Boys & Girls Club, Bringing Up Grades in 24 Anaheim elementary schools and reading
programs. KCGA also supports the Anaheim Public Library, Books on the Go at ARTIC, Anaheim
Arts Council, Children’s Festival, AUHSD Special Programs and the Anaheim YMCA. This year
KCGA Foundation gave $10,000 in Scholarships to 3 deserving high school seniors.
Kiwanis has partnered with Kiwanis Clubs throughout the world and UNICEF to eliminate
maternal and neonatal tetanus worldwide by raising $110 Million in a campaign known as the
Eliminate Project!
To learn more about the Kiwanis Club of Greater Anaheim we invite you to join us as our
guest at one of our weekly Thursday Morning Breakfast meetings at 7:30 AM at the Clarion Hotel
in Anaheim. Or you may visit www.KiwanisClubOfGreaterAnaheim.org for more information.
On behalf of our 2021 All-Star Baseball Game Chairman, Joe Dale, the committee and our
KCGA members, welcome to Hart Park and enjoy a Very Special Game!
Congratulations All-Stars

The South did not get a hit until the top of the 5th inning and 2007 Freddie Freeman Braves El Modena High

Key Club International
Kiwanis Club of Greater Anaheim Sponsors local Key Clubs
Key Club International is the largest co-educational high school service organization in our Nation and Internationally.
A local Key Club is normally organized and continuously sponsored by a local Kiwanis Club. Key Clubs are self-
governing and elect their own officers, determine their service projects and fund-raisers and operate under the
rules of the school administration. Key Club objectives include the objectives of Kiwanis. Key Clubs are focused
on the development of initiative, leadership ability and good citizenship practices. Each of our individual Key Club
members is part of the California-Nevada-Hawaii District and Key Club International. Each Key Club’s service
activities are designed for their local high school and community needs.
The Kiwanis Club of Greater Anaheim sponsors six Key Clubs! They are at Anaheim, Katella, Loara, Savanna,
Servite and Western High Schools!
Each Key Club meets once a week, on
campus, with an Academic and Kiwanis
Advisor present. The students run the
meetings and plan projects which their own
board has approved. These leaders have
been trained and many have attended the
yearly District Convention which alternates
between Northern and Southern California.
The core values of Key Club International
are leadership, character building, caring
and inclusiveness. Key Club’s Motto is
“Caring – Our Way of Life.” The members
of Key Club demonstrate this caring by
raising funds for various organizations with
which they partner: with UNICEF for Project
Eliminate to prevent neo-natal tetanus in third world countries; with the March of Dimes for helping to prevent birth
defects; and with the Children’s Miracle Network to prevent pediatric trauma.
Key Club was founded in 1925 and the members continue to pledge to uphold the Objects of Key Club International,
to build their home, school, and community; to serve their nation and world; and to combat all forces which tend to
undermine these institutions.
The Kiwanis Club of Greater Anaheim is proud of its Key Clubs which inspire through their shining service and give
everyone faith that the future of this nation is in good hands.

The 53 rd Annual Kiwanis
Orange County
Youth Baseball Award
“Scott Laverty”
2021 marked Scott Laverty’s eighth season as Head Coach at
Chapman University. Scott reached the pinnacle of his Chapman
coaching career when he led the Panthers to the 2019 NCAA
Division III National Championship - Chapman’s third national
title in baseball (1968 and 2003). On the way to the 2019 title,
the Panthers set the school record with 44 wins and the NCAA
Division III record with 524 strikeouts.
He was named the D3baseball.com and ABCA Division III Coach
of the Year as well as the West Region Coach of the Year and
the SCIAC Coach of the Year following the 2019 title run.
In July 2013, Laverty became the 14th head baseball coach in Chapman history and immediately
continued the tradition of his predecessors, putting together a 30-win campaign and reaching the
SCIAC Tournament championship game in his first year. In 2018, Laverty led the Panthers squad to
their first-ever SCIAC Tournament title and first trip to the NCAA Tournament since 2013.
Since taking over the program, Laverty has led the Panthers to six consecutive winning seasons and
a .687 winning percentage. The Panthers have made SCIAC Tournament appearances in five of his
six years, including three appearances in the championship game.
In 2017, Scott won his 100th game as a Panther and 400th overall while guiding the Panthers to a
second-place finish in the SCIAC and third SCIAC Tournament appearance in four years.
He celebrated his 300th head coaching victory in 2014 after amassing 298 wins in 14 previous
seasons as the head coach for University of Redlands. There he turned around a fledgling program
that suffered losing records eight times from 1997-2004 and made it into a perennial contender,
leading the Bulldogs to nine straight seasons of .500 or better. Redlands finished in first or second
place in the SCIAC five times from 2005-13 including conference titles in ‘06 and ‘11 and set the
school record with 30 wins each time.
Prior to earning the head coaching job at Redlands, Laverty coached three years as an assistant at
UC Riverside (1997-99) alongside legendary Highlanders head coach Jack Smitheran. He also spent
the 1997 season on the coaching staff for the Evansville Otters of the Frontier League (Independent).
Laverty played his collegiate ball as a shortstop for Riverside, helping the Highlanders to the Division
II national finals in 1994.
In 2020, the Panthers remained in the top-5 of the national polls and were off to a solid 12-3 start
before the cancellation of the season due to the COVID-19 pandemic in March.

game since 1989. The Fighting Irish defeated Sonora for the Division 4 championship.
He was an Assistant Coach at Western High School in 2016-17.

he built strong programs before moving on to Sunny Hills. He became the Lancers
head coach before the 2014 season and the rebuilding process began.
Coach Kearney’s Sunny Hills team advanced to the CIF baseball semifinals in
2015. Having built that great team from practically nothing, Arlie was named the
O.C. Register’s baseball Coach of the Year. In 2018 his team made the next step by
reaching the CIF quarterfinals.
As this season comes to an end, Coach Kearney is taking a break from baseball to
coach his daughters who are 11, 8 and 6. Look out opposing softball teams.

Kiwanis Toy Making Project
When the Kiwanis Club of Greater Anaheim
(KCGA) was looking for a new service project,
they didn’t have to look far. It seemed the
Orange County Woodworkers Association had a
toy program, making handcrafted wooden toys
for underprivileged children and the leader of
that program was fellow Kiwanian, Ken Crandall.
So KCGA joined forces with the toymakers by
providing both donations and manpower.
The program began about 1986 when a few woodworkers began to construct
rudimentary toys from building contractors wasted lumber. In 1988 they produced a
mixed bag of 60 toys. Today there are 40 woodworkers who last year produced 5,000
toys which they donated to 50 non-profits at Christmas time. The children who get these
toys come from dysfunctional families and often leave home with only the clothes on their
back. A toy car, truck, plane or doll cradle with doll might be the only possession that they
have.
You can get more information about this program at the Orange County Woodworkers
Association web site: www.ocwoodworkers.org/Toy_program.html
