3 A Message From Paul Bostwick President of the Kiwanis Club of Greater Anaheim A warm welcome to this 54th Orange County High School All-Star Baseball Classic, sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Greater Anaheim. Decades ago, Cliff Rothrock, a dedicated educator and Kiwanis member, challenged the Kiwanis Club of Greater Anaheim to sponsor an event which would showcase the talented athletes in Orange County. Over the years the competition has grown and many outstanding young men have played in the KCGA Orange County All-Star Baseball Game and at least 156 of them have made it into the Majors! This evening we shall again see an exciting game featuring Orange County’s finest. As the high school career of these young athletes comes to a close, we recognize that the coaches and volunteers spent countless hours to make the game this evening a memorable experience. Parents and family members are a special support system and they share in the accomplishments of these young men. The athletes are an inspiration to all of us to do the best we can. Many of you have heard of Kiwanis International and some have not - Kiwanis International is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to improving the world one child and one community at a time. The Kiwanis Club of Greater Anaheim is the local part of Kiwanis International. I’m proud to say that KCGA is one of the most active clubs in Orange County. KCGA sponsors through its Service Leadership Programs, seven high school Key Clubs, an elementary K-Kids Club, Terrific Kids at the Boys & Girls Club, Bringing Up Grades awards in 24 Anaheim elementary schools and reading programs. KCGA also supports the Anaheim Public Library, Books on the Go at ARTIC, the Anaheim Children’s Festival, Special Programs for Anaheim schools and the Anaheim YMCA. Each year the KCGA Foundation gives thousands of dollars in scholarships to high school seniors. Kiwanis has partnered with Kiwanis Clubs throughout the world and UNICEF to help eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus worldwide by raising $110 Million in a campaign known as the Eliminate Project! To learn more about the Kiwanis Club of Greater Anaheim we invite you to join us as our guest at one of our weekly Thursday Morning Breakfast meetings at 7:30 a.m. at the Clarion Hotel in Anaheim. Or you may visit www.KiwanisClubOfGreaterAnaheim.org for more information. On behalf of our 2022 All-Star Baseball Game Chairman, Joe Dale, the committee and our KCGA members, welcome to Dee Fee Field at La Palma Park and enjoy a Very Special Game! Congratulations All-Stars Paul Bostwick, 2021-2022 President Kiwanis Club of Greater Anaheim

10 In many cases, the label “All Star Game” is a misnomer hurriedly tacked on any post-season contest, but in the matter of the annual Orange County High School Game, the term rings with veracity. Blake Hitchcock from Ocean View won the Most Hustling Player award. The series in now South-24 North-20. ALL STAR GAME HISTORY

11 ALL STAR GAME HISTORY 2012 – Beckman’s Zack Rivera led off the game with a home run and the South added 2 more runs in the 1st inning. A 5 run 5th inning pushed the South lead to 8-0. The North fought back but only scored few before the end of the game. South wins 10-4 to lead the series 25-20. 2013 – This was the year for the North! The 5th inning was the big one when the North sent 9 batters to the plate and scored 5 runs. They added a run in the 6th and 2 in the 8th. The South scored all of its runs in the 8th inning, but the North scored again in the 9th making it a 9-3 North win. South leads Series 25-21. 2014 – Usually the All-Star game is an evenly matched contest and this year’s game was still tied at 8-8 after 11 innings! So this was the first of 47 All-Star games to end in a tie and it’s now South-25½ North 21½. 2015 – This was an exciting year as electrical problems almost ruined the game. Power was restored in time for the game except for the scoreboard which would have been busy in the 1st inning. That’s when the South took a 4-0 lead on wild pitches. It was back and forth until the 6th inning when the North tied it. But the South came back for an 11-8 win so overall it’s South-26½ North 21½. 2016 – With all the electrical problems fixed, the North dominated the game winning the event 11-2 over the South. The South did not get a hit until the top of the 5th inning and by then the North had a 5-0 lead. So the South now leads the series 26-22-1. 2017 – This game seemed to be dominated by the South. In the 2nd inning they got 2 runs and added 2 more in the 4th. It was 6-1 in the 5th and ended at 8-4 in favor of the South. So the South leads the series 27-22-1 as we await the outcome of tonight’s game. 2018 – The South turned a big early lead into a 12-4 win over the North. Capistrano Valley’s Ryan Daugherty and Aliso Niguel’s Connor Kokx had RBI doubles. Marc Lidd of Crean Lutheran hit a two-run home run and Mater Dei’s Max Foxcroft had a triple. AJ Esperanza of El Modena doubled for the North and El Dorado’s Bobby Silvis had an RBI single. With the win, the South leads the series 28-22-1. 2019 – The South increased their lead over the North to 29-22-1. With one out in the bottom of the sixth inning and the score 3-3, the South’s Gavin Kennedy of Ocean View hit a flare to short right field. North fielder Ketch Gannon of Foothill couldn’t get to it and the hit sent Capistrano Valley’s Lance Gardner home to give the South a 4-3 lead. They added another run in the sixth on an error making it 5-3. 2020 – No game during the pandemic. 2021 – The 53rd All-Star game was held at Hart Park in Orange. The North celebrated its first victory since 2016 with a 6-2 win. Mater Dei’s Skye Selinsky earned the Hustle Award with his spectacular diving outfield catch. Valencia’s Cole Seward’s strong pitching made him the MVP. South still leads the series 29-22-1. Over the game’s history at least 156 OC Kiwanis All-Star players have gone on to play in the Major Leagues. 13 Key Club International Kiwanis Club of Greater Anaheim Sponsors local Key Clubs Key Club International is the largest co-educational high school service organization in our Nation and Internationally. A local Key Club is normally organized and continuously sponsored by a local Kiwanis Club. Key Clubs are selfgoverning and elect their own officers, determine their service projects and fund-raisers and operate under the rules of the school administration. Key Club objectives include the objectives of Kiwanis. Key Clubs are focused on the development of initiative, leadership ability and good citizenship practices. Each of our individual Key Club members is part of the California-Nevada-Hawaii District and Key Club International. Each Key Club’s service activities are designed for their local high school and community needs. The Kiwanis Club of Greater Anaheim sponsors seven Key Clubs! They are at Anaheim, Katella, Loara, Savanna, Servite and Western High Schools as well as Fairmont Prep! Each Key Club meets once a week, on campus, with an Academic and Kiwanis Advisor present. The students run the meetings and plan projects which their own board has approved. These leaders have been trained and many have attended the yearly District Convention which alternates between Northern and Southern California. The core values of Key Club International are leadership, character building, caring and inclusiveness. Key Club’s Motto is “Caring – Our Way of Life.” The members of Key Club demonstrate this caring by raising funds for various organizations with which they partner: with UNICEF for Project Eliminate to prevent neo-natal tetanus in third world countries; with the March of Dimes for helping to prevent birth defects; and with the Children’s Miracle Network to prevent pediatric trauma. Key Club was founded in 1925 and the members continue to pledge to uphold the Objects of Key Club International, to build their home, school, and community; to serve their nation and world; and to combat all forces which tend to undermine these institutions. The Kiwanis Club of Greater Anaheim is proud of its Key Clubs which inspire through their shining service and give everyone faith that the future of this nation is in good hands.

24 Kiwanis Toy Making Project When the Kiwanis Club of Greater Anaheim (KCGA) was looking for a new service project, they didn’t have to look far. It seemed the Orange County Woodworkers Association had a toy program, making handcrafted wooden toys for underprivileged children and the leader of that program was fellow Kiwanian, Ken Crandall. So KCGA joined forces with the toymakers by providing both donations and manpower. The program began about 1986 when a few woodworkers began to construct rudimentary toys from building contractors wasted lumber. In 1988 they produced a mixed bag of 60 toys. Today there are 40 woodworkers who last year produced 5,000 toys which they donated to 50 non-profits at Christmas time. The children who get these toys come from dysfunctional families and often leave home with only the clothes on their back. A toy car, truck, plane or doll cradle with doll might be the only possession that they have. You can get more information about this program at the Orange County Woodworkers Association web site: www.ocwoodworkers.org/Toy_program.html Mikiah, congratulations on all your accomplishments! We’ve always known you were a special kid who would achieve great things. Keep grinding son, the path is set before you. Love Mom, Dad & Elijah Johnny Dre Morales, Congrats!
