3 A Message From Terry Reinbold President of the Kiwanis Club of Greater Anaheim To paraphrase the great Yogi Berra, “It’s Déjà vu all over again”! I had the honor of being president of this great club over 30 years ago. And this storied game had already been a mainstay of our acvies since long before that! So here I am again, with all of you – celebrang some of the best high school baseball players in Orange County with one of the best games to be had here all year – our 55th Annual Orange County All‐Star Baseball Classic! For those not familiar with the Kiwanis Club of Greater Anaheim, we are part of a world‐ wide organizaon called Kiwanis Internaonal. We have thousands of volunteer members helping those in need in 80 countries! We focus on helping children in numerous ways and have student members here at every age from elementary grades through college helping in various ways. We’d love to introduce you to our group and our work, as we are always looking for people who would like to join us in our acvies. Please see any club volunteer here tonight for info on joining us at our weekly meengs held on Thursdays at 7.30 a.m. at the Clarion Hotel near the Anaheim Convenon Center. Or please visit us at www.KiwanisClubOfGreaterAnaheim.org This game tonight is just one of many of those acvies created and supported by our club – to honor our local talent and raise funds for our scholarship foundaon which assists graduang high school seniors with college costs. Many of our members are working various jobs here tonight, while our Key Club (high school) members are helping in the snack shack. As President Paul Bostwick said so well last year; “We recognize that the coaches and volunteers spent countless hours to make the game this evening a memorable experience. Parents and family members are a special support system, and they share in the accomplishments of these young men. These athletes are an inspiraon to all of us to do the best we can.” So on behalf of all our members, our All Star Game Chairman – Joe Dale, our game announcer – Dr. John Dahlem, our umpires, coaches, players, adversers and everyone involved in producing this fun night – Welcome and Enjoy! Congratulaons All Stars! Terry Reinbold – President 2022‐2023 Kiwanis Club of Greater Anaheim

10 In many cases, the label “All Star Game” is a misnomer hurriedly tacked on any post-season contest, but in the matter of the annual Orange County High School Game, the term rings with veracity. Each of the past North-South games has seen the cream of Orange County’s baseball players display their collective talents. The games sponsor, the Kiwanis Club of Greater Anaheim, again has gathered the finest group available and these graduating seniors will attempt to emulate their peers of the past. 11 ALL STAR GAME HISTORY 2012 – Beckman’s Zack Rivera led off the game with a home run and the South added 2 more runs in the 1st inning. A 5 run 5th inning pushed the South lead to 8-0. The North fought back but only scored few before the end of the game. South wins 10-4 to lead the series 25-20. 2013 – This was the year for the North! The 5th inning was the big one when the North sent 9 batters to the plate and scored 5 runs. They added a run in the 6th and 2 in the 8th. The South scored all of its runs in the 8th inning, but the North scored again in the 9th making it a 9-3 North win. South leads Series 25-21. 2014 – Usually the All-Star game is an evenly matched contest and this year’s game was still tied at 8-8 after 11 innings! So this was the first of 47 All-Star games to end in a tie and it’s now South-25½ North 21½. 2015 – This was an exciting year as electrical problems almost ruined the game. Power was restored in time for the game except for the scoreboard which would have been busy in the 1st inning. That’s when the South took a 4-0 lead on wild pitches. It was back and forth until the 6th inning when the North tied it. But the South came back for an 11-8 win so overall it’s South-26½ North 21½. 2016 – With all the electrical problems fixed, the North dominated the game winning the event 11-2 over the South. The South did not get a hit until the top of the 5th inning and by then the North had a 5-0 lead. So the South now leads the series 26-22-1. 2017 – This game seemed to be dominated by the South. In the 2nd inning they got 2 runs and added 2 more in the 4th. It was 6-1 in the 5th and ended at 8-4 in favor of the South. So the South leads the series 27-22-1 as we await the outcome of tonight’s game. 2018 – The South turned a big early lead into a 12-4 win over the North. Capistrano Valley’s Ryan Daugherty and Aliso Niguel’s Connor Kokx had RBI doubles. Marc Lidd of Crean Lutheran hit a two-run home run and Mater Dei’s Max Foxcroft had a triple. AJ Esperanza of El Modena doubled for the North and El Dorado’s Bobby Silvis had an RBI single. With the win, the South leads the series 28-22-1. 2019 – The South increased their lead over the North to 29-22-1. With one out in the bottom of the sixth inning and the score 3-3, the South’s Gavin Kennedy of Ocean View hit a flare to short right field. North fielder Ketch Gannon of Foothill couldn’t get to it and the hit sent Capistrano Valley’s Lance Gardner home to give the South a 4-3 lead. They added another run in the sixth on an error making it 5-3. 2020 – No game during the pandemic. 2021 – The 53rd All-Star game was held at Hart Park in Orange. The North celebrated its first victory since 2016 with a 6-2 win. Mater Dei’s Skye Selinsky earned the Hustle Award with his spectacular diving outfield catch. Valencia’s Cole Seward’s strong pitching made him the MVP. South still leads the series 29-22-1. 2022 – The 54th All-Star game returned to La Palma Park in Anaheim and the North made it two in a row with a 4-1 win. Trabuco Hills’ Drew Barrett clinched the Mr. Hustle Award when he climbed the fence to grab Servite infielder Auggie Gutierrez’s deep fly to center. Katella’s Myles Johnson earned the MVP Award with great hitting, sharp plays at third and a scoreless relief inning. Now the South leads the series 29-23-1. Over the game’s history at least 156 OC Kiwanis All-Star players have gone on to play in the Major Leagues. 13 Key Club International Kiwanis Club of Greater Anaheim Sponsors local Key Clubs Key Club International is the largest co-educational high school service organization in our Nation and Internationally. A local Key Club is normally organized and continuously sponsored by a local Kiwanis Club. Key Clubs are selfgoverning and elect their own officers, determine their service projects and fund-raisers and operate under the rules of the school administration. Key Club objectives include the objectives of Kiwanis. Key Clubs are focused on the development of initiative, leadership ability and good citizenship practices. Each of our individual Key Club members is part of the California-Nevada-Hawaii District and Key Club International. Each Key Club’s service activities are designed for their local high school and community needs. The Kiwanis Club of Greater Anaheim sponsors six Key Clubs! They are at Anaheim, Katella, Loara, Savanna, Servite and Western High Schools. Each Key Club meets once a week, on campus, with an Academic and Kiwanis Advisor present. The students run the meetings and plan projects which their own board has approved. These leaders have been trained and many have attended the yearly District Convention which alternates between Northern and Southern California. The core values of Key Club International are leadership, character building, caring and inclusiveness. Key Club’s Motto is “Caring – Our Way of Life.” The members of Key Club demonstrate this caring by raising funds for various organizations with which they partner: with UNICEF for Project Eliminate to prevent neo-natal tetanus in third world countries; with the March of Dimes for helping to prevent birth defects; and with the Children’s Miracle Network to prevent pediatric trauma. Key Club was founded in 1925 and the members continue to pledge to uphold the Objects of Key Club International, to build their home, school, and community; to serve their nation and world; and to combat all forces which tend to undermine these institutions. The Kiwanis Club of Greater Anaheim is proud of its Key Clubs which inspire through their shining service and give everyone faith that the future of this nation is in good hands.
14 The 55th Annual Kiwanis Orange County Youth Baseball Award “Benji Medure” Coach Benji Medure’s 2022 Huntington Beach team won the CIF SoCal D1 championship and he was named the Cal-Hi Sports State Coach-of-the-Year. So it’s no wonder that he has been a Kiwanis All-Star Assistant Coach four times and Head Coach for the South in 2011. Coach Medure, who just completed his 23rd year as head coach at Huntington Beach, has built one of the top baseball programs in California. He played and graduated from Riverside Poly in 1992 and began his coaching career as a varsity assistant there. In his eight years coaching at his alma mater they won four Ivy League titles and advanced to the CIF finals twice. He became head coach as a 25 year old at Huntington Beach High in 2001 and won the Sunset league in 2004 before advancing to the second round of the playoffs. That year he was named Sunset League and O.C. Coach-of-the-Year. The Oilers were CIF finalists in 2009 and won the CIF Championship in 2015. He was the CIF and State Coach-of-the-Year in 2015. He has also placed 18 players on Kiwanis All-Star teams during his time at HBHS. One of those players, Hank Conger, will be fondly remembered by Angel fans. Benji not only takes pride in winning championships but in sending his players on to college. He places a high emphasis on players’ integrity and character. This year the Huntington Beach High baseball team won the prestigious National High School Invitational tournament. The Oilers defeated Orange County foe JSerra 8-1 in the championship game which was held at the USA Baseball Training Complex in Cary, North Carolina. Huntington Beach also won the NHSI in 2016. Coach Medure teaches math at Huntington Beach High. He lives in Huntington Beach and, in his free time, enjoys cooking for friends and family. More importantly, we assume that he and his wife Tegan stay incredibly busy with their four daughters Lia, Francesca, Giovana, and Alessandra.

He began coaching at UC Davis as an assistant. Then after some time off, he joined the varsity staff at Santa Margarita Catholic High School. In his first year, he helped the Eagles win their first CIF Division 1 title in baseball. In 2018, he became the 2nd ever Capo Valley coach when Coach Zamora retired after 41 years. 24 Kiwanis Toy Making Project When the Kiwanis Club of Greater Anaheim (KCGA) was looking for a new service project, they didn’t have to look far. It seemed the Orange County Woodworkers Association had a toy program, making handcrafted wooden toys for underprivileged children and the leader of that program was fellow Kiwanian, Ken Crandall. So KCGA joined forces with the toymakers by providing both donations and manpower. The program began about 1986 when a few woodworkers began to construct rudimentary toys from building contractors wasted lumber. In 1988 they produced a mixed bag of 60 toys. Today there are 40 woodworkers who last year produced 5,000 toys which they donated to 50 non-profits at Christmas time. The children who get these toys come from dysfunctional families and often leave home with only the clothes on their back. A toy car, truck, plane or doll cradle with doll might be the only possession that they have. You can get more information about this program at the Orange County Woodworkers Association web site: www.ocwoodworkers.org/Toy_program.html Mulivai, face your challenges with strength, determination and confidence, work hard and keep believing in yourself and success shall follow you everywhere you go. 34 Coach Bob Zamora Orange County’s Baseball Legend Kiwanis welcomes Coach Zamora back to Dee Fee Field to fill in for Coach Adam Sorgi who is unable to be with us tonight for health reasons. Coach “Z” represented Capo Valley here as the Head South Coach in 1983 and again in 2002. He was the South’s Assistant Coach in 2007 and 2010. Coach Zamora was honored here in 2016 with the Kiwanis Youth Baseball Award or as Kiwanians always call it, “Mr. Baseball”. Bob graduated from Mt. Carmel High School in Los Angeles and Chapman College where he was captain of the 1968 NCAA Division 2 Champs. One of his biggest thrills happened right here at Glover Stadium when his Panthers defeated Division 1 National Champion USC. After a stint at double A ball, he began teaching and coaching in 1971. He coached at Capistrano Valley from 1977 until 2018 and his teams won 7 CIF-SS championships and 17 league championships. WELCOME BACK TO ANAHEIM COACH!!!
