A Message From

Joe Dale, KCGA President

On behalf of all the members of the Kiwanis Club of Greater Anaheim
(KCGA), I welcome you to this very special competition. Welcome
to the athletes who have been carefully selected as the best of the
best. Welcome to the coaches, faculty members, and administrators
who labor so tirelessly to keep high school athletics viable in Orange
County. Welcome to our athletes’ parents, families, and friends
who have done so much to help these young men achieve this
special honor. Finally, I want to thank the volunteers, sponsors, and
advertisers who make this game possible.

This is the 52nd Annual Kiwanis Orange County High School All-Star Baseball Game! This event
was originally inspired by KCGA member Cliff Rothrock, whose love for athletics and education
led to the start of his great tradition. It is a testament to his vision that so many past participants
have gone on to much higher achievements in college and professional baseball.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with the Kiwanis family of organizations, let me give you a
quick overview. Kiwanis International is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to improving
the world one child and one community at a time. The men and women of Kiwanis belong to
about 7,500 clubs in 80 countries and they are all committed to improving the lives of children.

To help you understand our club in Anaheim, here are some of our activities:
• Supporting the training of youth in leadership and volunteer skills through six high school Key
Clubs and one elementary school K-Kids Club.
• Providing significant support to the “Anaheim Public Library” including its mobile library.
• Awarding about $25,000 in scholarships annually to deserving high school seniors.
• Serving as Reading Mentors, donating free books, and giving over 1400 “Bring Up Grades”
Awards to our Anaheim Elementary students.
• Raising funds in support of the worldwide elimination of Maternal/Neonatal Tetanus, a
partnership project between Kiwanis International and UNICEF.
• Supporting the Anaheim Boys and Girls Club and the Anaheim Family YMCA.
• Assisting numerous other community non-profit organizations with money and services.

KCGA is always looking for new members who want to serve their community. We meet each
Thursday morning for breakfast in Anaheim. For more information, call the number below. Come
join the fun! If you live in another city, we’ll help you find the Kiwanis Club in your area.

Along with my duties as club president, I am honored to serve as Chair of our Baseball committee.
So once again, welcome to Glover Stadium and enjoy this very special game.

R. Joseph Dale, 2018-19 President

the North scored again in the 9th making it a 9-3 North win. 1972 Don Aase Angels AL All-Star
South leads Series 25-21.
1980 Rich Amaral Mariners
2014 – Usually the All-Star game is an evenly matched
contest and this year’s game was still tied at 8-8 after 11 2009 Nolan Arenado Rockies Silver Slugger
innings! So this was the first of 47 All-Star games to end in a
tie and it’s now South-25½ North 21½. 1969 Bert Blyleven Angels Hall of Fame

2015 – This was an exciting year. Electrical problems almost 1991 Aaron Boone Reds NL-AL All-Star
caused the game to be moved to Boysen Park. Power was
restored in time for the game except for the scoreboard which 1987 Bret Boone Reds 4 Gold Gloves
would have been busy in the 1st inning. That’s when the
South took a 4-0 lead on wild pitches. It was back and forth 1972 Gary Carter Expos Hall of Fame

back for an 11-8 win so overall it’s South-26½ North 21½. 2008 Gerrit Cole Pirates NLDS Starter

2016 – With all the electrical problems fixed, the North 1975 Tim Flannery Padres AL-NL All-Star
dominated the game winning the event 11-2 over the South.
The South did not get a hit until the top of the 5th inning and 2013 David Fletcher Angels
by then the North had a 5-0 lead. So the South now leads the
series 26-22-1. 1991 Shawn Green Dodgers Silver Slugger

2017 – This game seemed to be dominated by the South. In 2008 Kyle Hendricks Cubs 2016 World Series

was 6-1 in the 5th and ended at 8-4 in favor of the South. So 1976 Glenn Hoffman Red Sox

Key Club International

Kiwanis Club of Greater Anaheim Sponsors local Key Clubs

Key Club International is the largest co-educational high school service organization in our Nation and Internationally.
A local Key Club is normally organized and continuously sponsored by a local Kiwanis Club. Key Clubs are self-
governing and elect their own officers, determine their service projects and fund-raisers and operate under the
rules of the school administration. Key Club objectives include the objectives of Kiwanis. Key Clubs are focused
on the development of initiative, leadership ability and good citizenship practices. Each of our individual Key Club
members is part of the California-Nevada-Hawaii District and Key Club International. Each Key Club’s service
activities are designed for their local high school and community needs.

The Kiwanis Club of Greater Anaheim sponsors six Key Clubs! They are at Katella, Loara, Rosary, Savanna,
Servite and Western High Schools!

Each Key Club meets once a week, on
campus, with an Academic and Kiwanis
Advisor present. The students run the
meetings and plan projects which their own
board has approved. These leaders have
been trained and many have attended the
yearly District Convention which alternates
between Northern and Southern California.
The core values of Key Club International
are leadership, character building, caring
and inclusiveness. Key Club’s Motto is
“Caring – Our Way of Life.” The members
of Key Club demonstrate this caring by
raising funds for various organizations with
which they partner: with UNICEF for Project
Eliminate to prevent neo-natal tetanus in third world countries; with the March of Dimes for helping to prevent birth
defects; and with the Children’s Miracle Network to prevent pediatric trauma.
Key Club was founded in 1925 and the members continue to pledge to uphold the Objects of Key Club International,
to build their home, school, and community; to serve their nation and God; and to combat all forces which tend to
undermine these institutions.
The Kiwanis Club of Greater Anaheim is proud of its Key Clubs which inspire through their shining service and give
everyone faith that the future of this nation is in good hands.

The 52 nd Annual Kiwanis
Orange County

Youth Baseball Award
“Rick Vanderhook”

Cal State Fullerton head baseball coach Rick Vanderhook
prepped at Lakewood High School and received his bachelor’s
degree in physical education from Trinity University in 2003. He
is a product of the prominent Cerritos College program where
he played for Coach George Horton.
Vanderhook originally came to the Cal State Fullerton Titans in
1983 when he took a redshirt season. He was a member of the
Titans’ 1984 national championship team, earning the first of his
three Cal State Fullerton championship rings.

He began his coaching career as an assistant to Titans legendary coach Augie Garrido from 1985-
87, serving as bullpen coach, third base coach and working with the hitters and defense in 1987.
He remained on staff in 1988 under Coach Larry Cochell but then spent two seasons (1989-1990)
as an assistant at Cal State Northridge. Vanderhook returned to Cal State Fullerton with Garrido in
1991 and remained through the 2007 season.

He then spent three seasons (2009-11) as an assistant coach to John Savage at UCLA, where he
helped lead the Bruins to a conference title, a pair of postseason appearances and a runner-up
finish at the 2010 College World Series.

In all he spent 24 seasons as a Division I assistant coach (21 at Fullerton) and accumulated a total
of 12 conference championships, 20 postseason appearances, eight trips to the Super Regionals,
11 appearances in the College World Series and two national championships.

After two seasons at the helm of the Cal State Fullerton baseball program, head coach Vanderhook
was rewarded with a five-year contract extension through the 2018 season. In October of 2015 his
contract was extended through the 2019 season. He then earned an automatic extension last year
when the Titans reached the NCAA Super Regionals round and advanced all the way to Omaha.
The appearance marked the team’s 18th trip to the College World Series and the second over the
last three seasons under Vanderhook.

During the past six years, Rick has won four Big West Conference championships, garnered
four Big West Coach of the Year awards and guided the Titans to six straight NCAA postseason
appearances. The Titans made their 18th appearance in the NCAA College World Series in 2017
after also leading Fullerton to Omaha in 2015, ending a five-year drought which was the longest in
program history. Through the 2017 season, his head coaching record stood at 235-127 (.649).

Vanderhook and his wife, April, reside in Yorba Linda, Calif., with their daughters, Noelle and
Autumn, and their son, R.J.

The “Special Olympics” Are Special!

Why is it called “Special Olympics”?

There are times when we all need to feel
special. Developmentally challenged people in
particular face constant experiences of failure and
frustration. Sports provide confidence and
a sense of self-esteem. The athlete trains, develops skills, competes
and as he or she succeeds, starts building a positive self-image. As
a Special Olympic Person improves his or her performance in the
gymnasium and on the playing field, they also improve in the classroom,
at home and eventually on the job. These Special People have always
been told, “You can’t do it.” But in Special Olympics the statement is,
“You Can Do It! All You Need Is A Chance.” Special Olympics is that
chance for many “challenged” individuals.

Special Olympics involves the entire community with a group of special
people previously rejected. This involvement gives the Special Olympics participant and their families a
new sense of belonging.

At the 2012 Spring Games the Kiwanis Club of Greater Anaheim was awarded a “Lifetime Achievement
Award” by Special Olympics Orange County Southern California. Our club was honored for providing
lunches and support for over 40 years, a service project started by Ralph “Pete” Esten in the early 1970s.

The voice you hear . . .

Manny Alvarez

Announcing the All-Star Game tonight for the first time
is Manny Alvarez. He was behind the microphone for the
Canyon High School baseball team from 2002-06 and
for football and boys and girls basketball teams for many
years.

Alvarez has announced games for four CIF-SS
Championship teams and one CIF-SS Finalist. He has
announced the CIF-SS Finals for five years as well as
notable basketball tournaments including the Rancho
Mirage Holiday Invt’l (Max Preps Holiday Classic), Canyon-
Esperanza Tip-Off Classic, OC North Championships,
Diablo Inferno and the Coaches vs. Cancer Showcase.
For the past three years Manny has announced OC All-Star basketball games and has
been the media representative for the OC North team for the OC All-Star football games.
This past year, he was the announcer for the 2018 Junior Basketball Association,
operated by Big Baller Brand. In that capacity he announced games all over the country
and was the play-by-play broadcaster for JBA/USA in Europe.
Alvarez resides in Cypress and is currently a sports writer for the Orange County
Register, the Daily Pilot and SoCal Student Sections.

All-Star Player’s Banquet

From the very beginning, the Kiwanis Club of Greater Anaheim held a special evening meeting
to recognize the North and South All-Star Teams - twenty-four players and three coaches each.
The best Umpires in Orange County were also recognized.

This meeting soon became a banquet where KCGA presents each player with an 8x10 color
photograph of his team, an All-Star T-shirt, a Certificate of Participation, and a chance to meet
Miss Kiwanis All-Star.

This banquet also affords an opportunity to thank the parents, teachers, coaches and friends
who helped the players reach their goals both in sports and academics.

This year’s All-Star Banquet was held at the Clarion Hotel on May 15th, 2019 with about 200
players, coaches, umpires, parents, friends, and Kiwanians in attendance.
