A Message From

Frank Barry

President of the Kiwanis Club of Greater Anaheim

A warm welcome to athletes, parents, coaches, family, friends, sponsors, and
volunteers to the Kiwanis Club of Greater Anaheim’s 51st Orange County All-
Star Baseball Game.

Decades ago, Cliff Rothrock, a dedicated educator and Kiwanis member,
challenged the Kiwanis Club of Greater Anaheim to sponsor an event which
would showcase the talented athletes in Orange County. Over the years the
competition has grown and many outstanding young men have played in the
KCGA Orange County All-Star Baseball Game. This evening we shall again
see an exciting game featuring Orange County’s finest.

As the high school career of these young athletes comes to a close, we recognize that the coaches and
volunteers spent countless hours to ensure that the game this evening is a memorable experience. Parents
and family members are a special support system and they share in the accomplishments of these young
men. The athletes are an inspiration to all of us to do the best we can.

Kiwanis International is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to improving the world one child and
one community at a time. Kiwanis has partnered with UNICEF to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus
worldwide and has done so in 44 countries. The goal of $110 Million has been met! The men and women in
the organization are united in their commitment to serve the children of the world.

The Kiwanis Club of Greater Anaheim sponsors Service Leadership Programs: 8 high school Key Clubs,
an elementary school K-Kids Club, Terrific Kids at the Anaheim Boys & Girls Club, and Bring Up Grades in
24 Anaheim elementary schools.

KCGA supports Anaheim Public Library Books On the Go at ARTIC and the Bookmobile which is
celebrating its 60th Anniversary. Over the years, more than a half million dollars in scholarships have been
awarded to deserving high school seniors.

To learn more about the Kiwanis Club of Greater Anaheim, visit www.greater-anaheim.kiwanisone.org or
join us, as our guest, at one of our weekly Thursday morning breakfast meetings at 7:30 AM at the Clarion
Hotel in Anaheim.

On behalf of our All-Star Baseball Game Chairman, Joe Dale, and the committee and our KCGA members,
welcome to Glover Stadium and enjoy the 51st game.

Congratulations All-Stars

Frank Barry, 2018 President
Kiwanis Club of Greater Anaheim

All-Star Player’s Banquet

From the very beginning, the special evening meeting of the Kiwanis Club of Greater Anaheim was devoted to the
recognition of the twenty-four All-Star players and three Coaches of both the North and South Teams and of course, the
Umpires.
The KCGA presents each player with an 8x10 color photograph of his team, an All-Star T-shirt, a Certificate of
Participation, and if he’s lucky, a hug from Miss Kiwanis All-Star.
One of the highlights of the meeting is the recognition of parents, teachers, coaches and friends who helped the
players reach their goals both in sports and education.
This years All-Star Banquet was held at the Clarion Hotel on May 30th, 2018 with 200 players, coaches, umpires,
parents and friends in attendance.

back but only scored few before the end of the game. South 1969 Bert Blyleven Angels Hall of Fame

2013 – This was the year for the North! The 5th inning was 1991 Aaron Boone Reds NL-AL All-Star

scored 5 runs. They added a run in the 6th and 2 in the 1987 Bret Boone Reds 4 Gold Gloves

the North scored again in the 9th making it a 9-3 North win. 1972 Gary Carter Expos Hall of Fame
South leads Series 25-21.
2014 – Usually the All-Star game is an evenly matched 2008 Gerrit Cole Pirates NLDS Starter
contest and this year’s game was still tied at 8-8 after 11
innings! So this was the first of 47 All-Star games to end in a 2006 Hank Conger Angels
tie and it’s now South-25½ North 21½.
2015 – This was an exciting year. Electrical problems almost 1975 Tim Flannery Padres AL-NL All-Star
caused the game to be moved to Boysen Park. Power was
restored in time for the game except for the scoreboard which 1991 Shawn Green Dodgers Silver Slugger
would have been busy in the 1st inning. That’s when the
South took a 4-0 lead on wild pitches. It was back and forth 2008 Kyle Hendricks Cubs 2016 World Series
until the 6th inning when the North tied it. But the South came
back for an 11-8 win so overall it’s South-26½ North 21½. 1976 Glenn Hoffman Red Sox
2016 – With all the electrical problems fixed, the North
dominated the game winning the event 11-2 over the South. 1968 Randy Jones Padres Cy Young Award
The South did not get a hit until the top of the 5th inning and
by then the North had a 5-0 lead. So the South now leads the 1989 Ryan Klesko Padres NL All-Star
series 26-22-1.
2017 – This game seemed to be dominated by the South. In 1976 Dan Petry Tigers 1984 World Series
the 2nd inning they got 2 runs and added 2 more in the 4th. It
was 6-1 in the 5th and ended at 8-4 in favor of the South. So 1986 J.T. Snow Giants 6 Gold Gloves
the South leads the series 27-22-1 as we await the outcome
of tonight’s game. 1975 Tim Wallach Expos 5-time All-Star

The 51st Annual Kiwanis
Orange County

Youth Baseball Award
“Bob Boone”

Bob Boone is a former catcher and manager in Major
League Baseball. He was born in San Diego, California
and now lives with his wife Susan in San Marcos, California.
Bob currently serves as Assistant General Manager and
Vice President of Player Development for the Washington
Nationals.

Bob was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in the sixth round
of the 1969 amateur draft after attending Stanford University.
Bob made his debut with the Phillies in September 1972 and
he played for Philadelphia through 1981.

Bob’s father Ray Boone was a Major League infielder for thirteen years primarily with the Cleveland
Indians and Detroit Tigers. Two of Bob’s three sons also had Major League careers. Bret was
a second baseman from 1992 to 2005 primarily with Seattle and Cincinnati. Aaron was a third
baseman with Cincinnati and five other teams from 1997 through 2009. Aaron was an ESPN
broadcaster from 2010 to 2017 and is now Manager of the New York Yankees. All four Boone
family members were named All-Stars during their careers.

As proof of his phenomenal defensive catching skills, Bob committed only eight errors and allowed
only three passed balls in the 1977 season. Most Southern California fans will remember him as
the Angels’ catcher from 1982 through 1988. In his first Angel season, Bob threw out 21 of the
first 34 steal attempts and helped the Angels to the American League West title. On September
30, 1984, he caught Mike Witt’s perfect game. Bret and Aaron Boone as well as Mike Witt were all
Kiwanis Orange County Baseball All-Stars.

After his time with the Angels, Bob played for the Kansas City Royals for a couple years and later
became the Royals Manager. He also managed the Cincinnati Reds from 2001 to 2003.

Bob’s career was highlighted by being a four time All-Star, winning a World Series in 1980, earning
seven Gold Glove Awards, and being inducted into the Philadelphia Baseball Wall of Fame. Bob
caught 2,225 games in his 19-year Major League career. He is now ranked 3rd in that category
behind Ivan Rodriguez and Carlton Fisk. Bob’s 11,260 putouts rank him 8th on the all-time list and
catching 117 shutouts puts him 14th among Major League catchers.

Key Club International

Kiwanis Club of Greater Anaheim Sponsors local Key Clubs

Key Club International is the largest co-educational high school service organization in our Nation and Internationally. A local Key Club must be
organized and continuously sponsored by a local Kiwanis Club. Key Clubs are self-governing and elect their own officers, determine their service
projects and fund-raisers and operate under the rules of the school administration. Key Club objectives include the objectives of Kiwanis. Key
Clubs are unique for their aim in the development of initiative, leadership ability and good citizenship practices of its members. Each individual
Key Club is a member of the International Organization with his or her own annual District, International programs and conventions. Each Key
Club’s service activities are designed for their local high school and community needs.

The “Key” in Key Club stands for “Kiwanis Educating Youth”.
The Kiwanis Club of Greater Anaheim sponsors eight Key Clubs at Anaheim High School, Katella High School, Loara
High School, Rosary High School, Savanna High School, Servite High School, Fairmont High School and Western
High School.
Each Key Club meets once a week, on campus, with an Academic and Kiwanis advisor present who advise but the
students run the meetings and present projects which their board has approved. These leaders have been trained and
many have attended the yearly District Convention which alternates between Sacramento and Southern California.
KCGA’s Key Clubs are in Division 30 South of the California-Nevada-Hawaii District of Kiwanis International.
Key Club’s Motto is “Caring Our Way of Life.” The members of the Key Club demonstrate this caring by raising funds
for various organizations with which they partner: with UNICEF for Project Eliminate to eliminate neo-natal tetanus
in 59 countries; just this year Key Clubs raised $163,000 for Pediatric Trauma Prevention; March of Dimes-Key
Club International began partnering with the March of Dimes in the 60’s and continues to collect dimes in hopes that
someday children will be born free of birth defects; and Children’s Miracle Network-this non-profit raises money to
benefit hospitalized kids.
KCGA Key Clubs volunteer in local events such as the Disney Half-Marathon, Relay for Life, the Anaheim Children’s
Art Festival, the Anaheim Halloween Festival, the Kiwanis CHOC Carnival, and supports Kiwanis projects such as this
All Star Baseball Game; providing lunches for the Orange County Special Olympics; Light the Night at Angel Stadium
for the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society and our annual music festival/pancake breakfast in December.
Key Club was founded in 1925 and the members continue to pledge to uphold the Objects of Key Club International,
to build their home, school, and community; to serve their nation and God; and to combat all forces which tend to
undermine these institutions.
The Kiwanis Club of Greater Anaheim is proud of its Key Clubs which inspire by their shining service and give
everyone faith that the future of this nation is in good hands.

The “Special Olympics” Are Special!

Why is it called “Special Olympics”?

There are times when we all need to feel
special. Developmentally challenged people in
particular face constant experiences of failure and
frustration. Sports provide confidence and
a sense of self-esteem. The athlete trains, develops skills, competes
and as he or she succeeds, starts building a positive self-image. As
a Special Olympic Person improves his or her performance in the
gymnasium and on the playing field, they also improve in the classroom,
at home and eventually on the job. These Special People have always
been told, “You can’t do it.” But in Special Olympics the statement is,
“You Can Do It! All You Need Is A Chance.” Special Olympics is that
chance for many “challenged” individuals.
Special Olympics involves the entire community with a group of special
people previously rejected. This involvement gives the Special Olympics participant and their families a
new sense of belonging.
At the 2012 Spring Games the Kiwanis Club of Greater Anaheim was awarded a “Lifetime Achievement
Award” by Special Olympics Orange County Southern California. Our club was honored for providing
lunches and support for over 40 years, a service project started by Ralph “Pete” Esten in the early 1970s.
