A Message From
Thomas G. Kieviet
President of the Kiwanis Club of Greater Anaheim
Welcome to the 46th Annual Orange County High School All-Star
North vs. South Baseball Game sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of
Greater Anaheim (KCGA). This game contains the cream of the crop
of senior high school baseball players from throughout Orange County
and has produced a number of professional Major League Baseball
players throughout the years.
I want to thank all those who make this game possible; from the
players and coaches themselves, to the many volunteers, sponsors,
advertisers and in-kind donors who give the time, effort, money and other resources needed to
make this game go off without a hitch. I also want to acknowledge and thank the parents of the
players for their years of support and encouragement to get them to where they are today.
Many of you may have heard of Kiwanis as a community service organization. Many cities
have their own Kiwanis club and I am proud to say that KCGA is one of the most active and
productive clubs within Orange County. Each individual Kiwanis club, including KCGA, is
"dedicated to changing the world, one child and community at a time." KCGA does this by
sponsoring and advising several Service Leadership Programs at local elementary (K-Kids),
junior high (Builders Clubs) and high schools (Key Clubs) that perform community service and
raise funds for Kiwanis causes. KCGA provides over $20,000 annually in scholarships to high
school seniors who demonstrate a need and have a passion for service. KCGA provides
money and services to over 25 community non-profit organizations and activities; such as the
Anaheim Public Library, the Anaheim Arts Council, the Anaheim Fall Festival, the Anaheim
Children's Festival, the Orange County Family Justice Center, the Anaheim Family YMCA and
the Anaheim Boys and Girls Club. KCGA is also partnering with Kiwanis clubs throughout the
world in the Eliminate Project that will be raising $110,000,000 over a 5 year period to eliminate
maternal neo-natal tetanus in every county where it still exists.
KCGA is always looking for new members who have a passion for service. You are
welcome to be our guest at one of our weekly Thursday morning meetings at 7:30 AM at the
Clarion Hotel. For more information, visit our website at kiwanisclubofgreateranaheim.org. If
you live or work somewhere other than Anaheim, there is probably a Kiwanis club in your area
that may be a fit for you.
On behalf of KCGA and our All-Star Baseball Game Chairman, Will Cornell, welcome to
Glover Stadium and enjoy this very special game.
Congratulations All-Stars
Thomas G. Kieviet, 2012-13 President
Kiwanis Club of Greater Anaheim

All-Star Player’s Banquet
From the very beginning, the special evening
meeting of the Kiwanis Club of Greater Anaheim was
devoted to the recognition of the twenty-two All-Star
players and three Coaches of both the North and
South Teams and of course, the Umpires.
The KCGA presents each player with an 8x10
color photograph of his team, an All-Star T-shirt, a
Certificate of Participation, and if he’s lucky, a hug
from Miss Kiwanis All-Star.
One of the highlights of the meeting is the
recognition of parents, teachers, coaches and friends
who helped the players reach their goals both in
sports and education.
This years All-Star Banquet was held at the
Downtown Community Center on May 29th with 200
players, coaches, umpires, parents and friends in

The 46th Annual Kiwanis
Orange County
Youth Baseball Award
“Barry Silverman”
Barry Silverman was born in Akron, Ohio and graduated from Firestone
High School with the first graduating class in 1965. Mom—Adele was a
homemaker and Dad–Larry, while a business owner in downtown Akron
was a regionally known basketball teacher who helped the careers of NBA
stars Gus Johnson and Nate Thurmond.
Barry moved to Southern California in 1971, first to Long Beach, then Buena Park, Fountain
Valley and since 2002, Newport Beach. His wife of 42 years—Linda and he have a daughter—
Laurel 39, a musical theater actress regionally in St. Louis/Chicago for 8 years and is a certified
Pilate and Yoga instructor. Son—Aaron, 36 an Executive Souse chef and Master Grill chef at
Mastro’s in Chicago, is also pursuing teaching credentials for Special Ed, with a minor in math and
history.
After college, Barry spent his working career as a Corporate Controller and currently is the COO
of Baxter’s PAWStively Perfect Products Corp.—a startup company for his wife’s patented
adjustable pet feeder.
In 1973 Barry was a Big Brother in Orange County helping 2 little brothers until 1977. He began
his involvement in Youth Baseball in 1975 coaching PONY Baseball in Buena Park and was
manager of 13 yr. old All-Star teams 2 years. In 1988 he started volunteer Umpiring Little League
locally. In 1992 besides being a volunteer umpire for Fountain Valley Little League he umpired for
Shaky City Blues (aka Mario of Dave’s Trophies). In 1997 he received formal Umpire training from
California District 62 and is currently a D62 Staff Umpire, for Little League games at all levels for
60-80 games a year. He has attended the Jim Evans Academy of Professional Umpiring in AZ and
a volunteer instructor for Jim Evans Huntington Beach weekend professional clinic. He is an Orange
County Baseball Official for high school baseball and for ten years was a Junior college umpire, D1
College scrimmages, and the list goes on and on and on…
In 2004 he was chosen as a volunteer umpire for the Little League European, Middle East,
Africa 11-12 year old regionals held in Kutno, Poland! Since 1998, he has served as core instructor
in D62 Little League to train both adult and youth umpires in mechanics and rules.
Since 2004 he has provided volunteer umpires for our Kiwanis High School All-Star Baseball
Game at the request of Mario (of Dave’s Trophies).
According to Barry Silverman, he finds the most enjoyment at seeing both adults and our youth
succeed at the difficult task of baseball officiating. He enjoys learning about the aspirations of the
student athletes for whom he officiates. Little League Baseball/softball is not a program to teach
baseball to our youth, but a program to teach life lessons involving courage, character and loyalty.
Most of our student athletes will never get the opportunity to play professional baseball. The life
lessons knowingly or unknowingly taught by managers, coaches, parents, and yes, even umpires
makes the player a better adult and parent.

Key Club International
Kiwanis Club of Greater Anaheim Sponsors local Key Clubs
Key Club International is the largest co-educational high school service organization in our Nation and Internationally. A local Key Club must be
organized and continuously sponsored by a local Kiwanis Club. Key Clubs are self-governing and elect their own officers, determine their service
projects and fund-raisers and operate under the rules of the school administration. Key Club objectives include the objectives of Kiwanis.
Key Clubs are unique for their aim in the development of initiative, leadership ability and good citizenship practices of its members. Each
individual Key Club is a member of the International Organization with his or her own annual District, International programs and conventions.
Each Key Club's service activities are designed for their local high school and community needs.
The "Key" in Key Club stands for "Kiwanis Educating Youth".
The Kiwanis Club of Greater Anaheim sponsors seven Key Clubs at Anaheim High School, Katella High School,
Loara High School, Rosary High School, Savanna High School, Servite High School, and Western High School.
Each Key Club meets once a week, on campus, with an Academic and Kiwanis advisor present who advise but the
students run the meetings and present projects which their board has approved. These leaders have been trained
and many have attended the yearly District Convention which alternates between Sacramento and Southern
California.
KCGA's Key Clubs are in Division 30 South of the California-Nevada-Hawaii District of Kiwanis International.
Key Club's Motto is "Caring Our Way of Life." The members of the Key Club demonstrate this caring by raising funds
for various organizations with which they partner: with UNICEF for Project Eliminate to eliminate neo-natal tetanus in
29 countries; just this year Key Clubs raised $150,000 for Pediatric Trauma Prevention; March of Dimes-Key Club
International began partnering with the March of Dimes in the 60's and continues to collect dimes in hopes that
someday children will be born free of birth defects; and Children's Miracle Network-this non-profit raises money to
benefit hospitalized kids.
KCGA Key Clubs volunteer in local events such as the Disney Half-Marathon, Relay for Life, the Anaheim Children's
Art Festival, the Anaheim Halloween Festival, the Kiwanis CHOC Carnival, and supports Kiwanis projects such as this
All Star Baseball Game; providing lunches for the Orange County Special Olympics; Light the Night at Angel Stadium
for the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society and our annual music festival/pancake breakfast in December.
Key Club was founded in 1925 and the members continue to pledge to uphold the Objects of Key Club International,
to build their home, school, and community; to serve their nation and God; and to combat all forces which tend to
undermine these institutions.
The Kiwanis Club of Greater Anaheim is proud of its Key Clubs which inspire by their shining service and give
everyone faith that the future of this nation is in good hands.

The Kiwanis Club of Greater
Anaheim has participated in
the Special Olympics since it
began in Orange County in
the early seventies, thanks
to the efforts of Ralph “Pete”
Esten. Through 1997, Pete
“ran the show” for KCGA,
taking care of all the details
necessary for us to provide
free lunches to the
competitors, coaches and
counselors. 1,400 lunches
were served at the Special
Olympics Regional Games
held at Irvine High School. It’s
estimated, since the Kiwanis
Club of Greater Ahaheim
intiated this program, over
32,000 free lunches have
been provided.
At the 2012 Spring Games the Kiwanis Club of Greater Anaheim was awarded by Special Olympics Orange
County Southern California a “Life Time Achievement Award” honoring the Kiwanis Club of Greater
Anaheim for its efforts in providing lunches and support for the past 32 years. Our club’s support will continue
by supplying volunteers from our Club and the six High School Key Clubs that we sponsor in lunch preparation.
