Celebration of success and prizegiving

June 2020

Welcome...

I wouldn’t have believed that in my first year I would be welcoming you to a
virtual prizegiving. It certainly has been a remarkable first year as Headmaster
of Worksop College and Ranby House but one in which I have been extremely
proud of our adaptability and resilience as a community. A community of staff,
pupils, parents and OWs that has come together to support one another and to
assist those in need of support at this difficult time.
We sincerely hope that despite everything we can make this day as memorable
as possible for those leaving us today, in particular the Upper Sixth. We should
be extremely proud of all that we have achieved this year and I congratulate
warmly all the prize winners today.
In this momentous and sobering year I am very proud of all our successes,
individually and collectively, which give us cause to celebrate the talent,
individuality and uniqueness of our whole community.
Let us hope that life will return to a sense of normality as we enter our 125th year.
In the meantime, thank you, from Jane and I, for all your support. It is a privilege
to be your Headmaster.
Take care, stay safe and look after all those that you love.

Dr John Price
Headmaster

A message from the Head

This is a day of celebration and it is also one of commemoration.

For many students, and some staff, this day represents the last school event
before they leave to embark on the next stage of life: to the Upper Sixth students
and to any other student leavers, we look forward to welcoming you back as
OWs not least on results day in August, but hopefully frequently thereafter.

Though you are at a different stage of your life, you still are – and will remain –
a member of our community.

Joanne Blood joined us as a member of the Nurse team in the Health Care Centre
in September 2018 providing great care, with professionalism, for all our pupils.
We wish Joanne all the best for the future.

Sammy Laurent first came to Worksop three years ago on his university
placement. When he returned to university he continued coaching here. Once
he had graduated, Sammy re-joined us last September as a teacher of Psychology
and PE, Assistant Housemaster of Pelham and coach of cricket and hockey. Having
very recently been offered a position, Sammy leaves to become Head of Cricket
and PE teacher at King Edward’s School, Whitley.

Rob & Sylvia Hewett joined us in September 2018 with Rob as Housemaster of
Mason and teacher of Physics. Sylvia immersed herself into community life, taking
on a variety of roles including sports coaching, teaching History, Latin and Spanish
and working in Learning Support. They leave us as Rob will take up the positon of
Physics teacher, and Syliva as a Houseparent, at LVS Ascot, Berkshire.

Faizan Nawaz joined us in September 2018 as teacher of Economics and Business
and was a tutor in Pelham. Faizan has also been involved in coaching boxing
and cricket. Faizan leaves to take up a promotion as Head of Business Studies at
Sheffield Springs Academy.

Susan Halsall joined us as part of the community in 2004, and became part time
Art teacher. In 2009 Susan left to raise a family and when she returned it was initially
as Art Technician then as Teacher of Art, Assistant Housemistress in Portland and
Learning Support Assistant. Susan is moving up to Edinburgh to join her husband,
Tim, who is Deputy Rector at the Edinburgh Academy.

Adam Gutteridge came to Worksop College to give a talk on behalf of the Amy
Winehouse Foundation. It is testament to his charisma, intellect and ability that we
rapidly headhunted him to become a member of the RS and PSHE Department from
September 2016. Adam was also a tutor in Talbot. In 2018 Adam became Assistant
Deputy Head Academic, followed a year later by Deputy Head Academic: roles he
has undertaken with consummate ease. In addition to his academic responsibilities,
Adam has been a supporter of a variety of school expeditions and cross-country.
Adam leaves us to join Millfield as Assistant Head Academic.

James Bayston joined us in January 2012 as Teacher of Business and Economics and
ran the RAF section of the CCF from 2014, and coached numerous sports. Latterly
James became Head of Careers and was a tutor in both Mason and Shirley. James is
moving with his family to Norfolk, where he will teach at Thorpe St Andrew’s School.

Charley Phillips joined us in 2012 as Assistant Director of Music, School Organist
and Assistant Housemistress of Derry. Over the past eight years, Charley has led
the chamber choirs known as Schola Cantorum and Vox. Charley has also been the
musical director of several school performances and has accompanied hundreds
of pupils in exams and lunchtime concerts. She has coached netball and became
Housemistress of Derry in September 2018. Charley is moving to Queenswood
School in Hertfordshire as Housemistress.

Nadine Boole originally joined us as a member of the Nurse team in the Health Care
Centre in 1981. When she retired, Nadine agreed to continue as our School Listener.
For a number of years Nadine has most ably supported many of our young people
through challenging times.

Richard Steel, Governor, retired from the Board in June 2020. Richard was
appointed as a governor in June 2008, following his retirement as Head of Wellesley
House in Kent, a position he had held from 1990 to 2006. As well as sitting on the
Board, he also served as Vice Custos until he relinquished that role in 2019 and
chaired the Education Committee from 2015 until his retirement.

At this time of global division and disunity, we wish to
reaffirm and re-emphasise the importance of diversity

within our community.

We will continue to embrace students of different
nationalities, genders, cultures, sexualities and social

backgrounds as an inherent part of our ethos.

Anyone who is willing to contribute positivity to this school
and its principles will be welcomed and valued here.
