The great questions of life
The book of Job is the oldest in the bible while its main character happens to be one of the
most famous of all. Job triumphed through suffering but at some point of his trials, he said,
“Why wasn’t I still-born, why grant me life to experience all thissuffering?”
Those are not light words. He asked why was an opportunity given to one who would do
anything to embrace death. He was in deep despair as most people have become in our world.
One must ask themselves some important questions about life or else risk getting to its end
and discovering they never lived.
Who am I?
This is not a request for your name but life’s purpose. Before we were each formed in the
womb, the creator declares that He knew us and our existence transcends mere flesh and
blood. We were made in God’s image and until that is realized, life does not make any sense.
The lack of identity forces us to find meaning in events and other forms of materialism as
opposed to the intrinsic value that we were created to realize.
Where did I come from?
Isn’t it interesting how every generation has a raging battle to explain away God? In referring
to evolutionist theories and atheism as promoted by Harris, G. K. Chesterton said, “if this
is as strong as their arguments get, they are dreadfully weak!” Have you come to terms with
your origin? Do you believe that life is here today and simply gone tomorrow or you have
sought real answers? You are not a mere fluke of nature or came into being by chance. Ein-
stein couldn’t help but exclaim, “there is a captain on the bridge!”. Every detail of human life
was planned out with meticulous detail before even a single day had been lived. My birth and
yours brought no surprise to God. It was well scheduled, anticipated and provided for. Our
origin is clear! We are not just intelligent species evolved from nothingness. We were formed
by an eternal being who loved us so much. He never forced us to love Him but gave us free
will.
Why am I here?
The child blames bad parenting for landing in prison. The husband blames his wife for the
divorce and vice-versa. The student blames the teachers for her failure. Its almost rare to hear
someone admitting wrong and taking responsibility. How much of your current life’s cir-
cumstances are due to your own input. Some things would have worked if you had chosen
forgiveness while some issues could have been fixed by keeping quiet. Some circumstances
challenged your integrity and you were found wanting. Whatever the current state of your
life, realize that you can drop anchor and seek God’s help to fix things, even those that have
created your current predicament
The Byo Story magazine page 05
.
Where am I going?
The life of man is filled with all sorts of ups and downs. There are valleys and summits. Each
of them shaping our character towards our destiny. Do you know where you are currently
headed. Maybe that’s why someone lamented and said, “Oh to get to the end of life and dis-
cover that it was wrong, that you were created to be
something else and you never lived!”. What compels you on your current path? What moti-
vates your choices and desires? Well, God has a plan for your future which He desires that you
would come to terms with and submit to. Maybe that’s why the preacher said, “Everything has
already been decided. It was known long ago what each person would be, so there’s no use
arguing with God about your destiny!”.
Who are you accountable to?
Have you thought through the fact that life on earth is temporal and at that, very brief. That
this is not all there is. If at all, this should sober up our thoughts and give us a resounding
wake up call. Are you aware that your power of choice came from God the designer of all
things and that He desires that you align with His plan for human life. He is not violating our
choice but in fact empowering it!
We don’t live for
ourselves, we have a loving God who has gone to great extents to prove His love. While all the other people
and gods cower behind religion and rhetoric, Christ became a part of His creation, suffered for it and ulti-
mately laid down His life for all humanity. He is the remedy for your malady, the answer to all the great ques-
tions of life. He is the unseen guest in all meals, the unseen passenger in every journey, the
one who pursues us at all costs.
So in the midst of trying times and uncertainty such as we currently find ourselves in, we should trust
entirely on God. Having our hope firmly fixed on that promise, “Fear not, for I am with you.” Its not what we
are up against that’s important, its who we go up against it with. In this case, its God.

DJ OF THE MONTH
This month we feature a man that needs no introduction to the entertainment industry and decks.
A multi-award-winning DJ, music producer, sound engineer, businessman and a graduate in Geography and
Population Studies. These are just some of the things that this vibrant personality is known for. Born
Mqondisi Sibanda, DJ Skaiva is a Bulawayo-born artist that proudly lifts the Mpopoma banner high.
Education
Skaiva did his primary education at Baines Primary, after that he went to Mpopoma High School
and thereafter went to Lupane State University to do his degree.
Discovering His Love For Music
He has loved music from a very early age. He began to really discover his musical talent as a member of the
praise and worship team at church, where he played the drums and did vocals and he was also involvement in
music at school. That was where his love for live music took root. While he was at university he began to have
an interest in live Deejaying and took it up full-time soon after completing his degree. He hasn’t looked back
since!
Defining DJ Skaiva’s Style of Music
Skaiva is a lover of soulful music, with a keen interest in Deep House. However, he is a truly dynamic and
adaptable artist who can produce any style of music as the challenge is presented to him.
Career Highlights
He is a four-time award-winner and twelve-time nominee for various arts awards, including the prestigious
Bulawayo Arts Awards, the Zimbabwe Music Awards (ZIMA). He was number one on Metro FM and 5FM
with his hit song Daydreamer, featuring the mind-blowing, soulful vocalist, Rakeem. These are the best mo-
ments of his career so far. Not forgetting the dance hit, Sweet Jesus, also featuring Rakeem and South African
House Music legend, DJ QT.
Challenges
Support for Skaiva’s music in the Bulawayo and Zimbabwean as a whole hasn’t been what it should be. Also
financial constraints are a major setback even though his music is available on all the main digital platforms.
Pirating has also dealt a huge blow, not only for DJ Skaiva, but for so many other artists in general.
Consistency
In the high-speed age of the internet superhighway, content creation is the order of the day. So, DJ Skaiva
keeps himself in the fans ‘radar by making sure he always does a new project every few months. He’s always
up to date with new posts on his social media platforms in order to keep his audience engaged in his music.
In general, there’s always something new for his followers to look forward to, as he goes all-out to create hit
after hit!
What Else Is DJ Skaiva Busy With?
DJ Skaiva runs a music studio, where he focuses mainly on exposing upcoming artists to the
music industry and teaching them how to produce their own content. When he is not immersed in
the music, he runs a small cell phone retail business. However, being a degree holder, he wishes
he could also ply his skill in line with his academic qualifications. This is one of the hallmarks of
many young lives in the modern world; we spend years in study, only to find that we cannot use
The Byo Story magazine page 16
our qualifications practically in the outside world, essentially nullifying the purpose of all those years in the
lecture rooms.
What Can We Expect From Him This Year
Being a proactive doer, after a series of iconic hits, like “Imali Yeqolo” and “Foreigner,” DJ Skaiva has hit the
ground running in 2021, as he is set to release an EP entitled “Repent,” which chronicles the journey of one
who had long stumbled and lost his way, but has finally crawled out of the thicket of life’s trials, to find his
way back to what they ought to be. It can be expected that this will be another production to soak up and
really get lost in, as DJ Skaiva doesn’t spare the horses when he does his thing!
Words Of Wisdom From The Man Himself
DJ Skaiva is a man who knows where his bread is buttered so when he gives guidance to aspiring artists, it’s
definitely something to take with you on your own journey. The multi-hit wonder says, “Always put music
first. If you put money first, you’ll be disappointed and give up on your talent… God gave you this gift, so He
has a plan as to how you’ll make the money out of it, so just leave everything to Him.”

GRIM TYRANNY CUSTOMS
My name is Tidings Limukani Ndhlovu, I am the founder of Grim Tyranny Customs. I specialise in building
custom made bicycles, beats and clothing. I am based in Diepsloot, Johannesburg and create most of my
products at home.
I was born and raised in Lobengula West, Bulawayo and did most of my schooling there. The dream of
customising my products was born from the love of Hip Hop, it’s diverse culture and elements. I learnt a lot
from Psychophonics, the crew that me and my friends formed. Through Hip hop, I fell in love with lowriders,
hot rods, choppers, bobbers, etc. It all started as a fantasy and soon developed into a vision and now
through this vision, I’m bringing those childhood fantasies to life.
The first bike that I ever made was built from BMX and mountain bike spares that I salvaged from a local
scrape yard. I drew the design on paper and hired a welder to cut and join the pieces together. I then added
a bluetooth speaker, so that I can bang my favourite jams as I cruise around the hood. The bike was a hit in
the hood. Every kid and most adults wanted to take it for a spin. There were some who would pass
comments like ‘Whoa! ibhaysikil’ elingaka’ or ‘Le, yimoto straight.’ and ‘Wena ngeke uze uthenge imoto
elayfin usenza kanje.’ There were also some who would just point and laugh as I was cruising by. As time
went by, people started getting used to it and the comments became encouraging and inspiring. I then
decided to acquire welding skills and be able to design and build my own bikes. I still have a lot to learn in
welding and metal fabrication as it is a big industry.
The beat side of the business started way back before I got introduced to Hip Hop by my dear friend
S.U.P.R.E.M.E, may his soul rest in peace. I was in Form One and in a drama class. My seniors would play the
Djembe drum and we dance to it or play it as a dramatic, suspense beat for a play. I would compose my own
beats in my head and sometimes I would nod my head to them. No one would hear the music, it was just in
my head. When I got into Hip Hop, I learned to beat box, thus playing a beat using my mouth. It was a long
journey before I started making my own beats on a computer with the right software. I’m a self taught beat
The Byo Story magazine page 20
maker and I have collaborated with artists like Kempa Bilongo a.k.a Giovanni Fibonacci, Sykotek, BA7 a.k.a
Amun Heru Neteru to name a few. I have an EP with BA7 and It’s dropping out some time in February 2021.
The clothing part of Grim Tyranny Customs focuses mainly on the Hip Hop clientele. The baggy jeans style
of clothing that was popular from the late 80s to mid 2000s is what inspired me to make my own clothing. I
got the whole idea from a late rapper and friend of mine called Themba a.k.a Back Door Thug, He used to
make the clothing and sell to people at school and around his hood. We used to go to Sizane High in
Phelandaba Number 6.
I would design the clothing on paper and he would buy the material and sew it together. After he passed on,
the clothing side of Grim Tyranny Customs died too because I never got the chance to learn the skill of dress-
making. I still design on paper and I won’t stop until I get a skilled dressmaker to sew if for me and resurrect
Grim Tyranny Custom Clothing.
I have faced a lot of challenges on the bikes, due to expensive equipment but that hasn’t stopped me from
building the bikes and the Lockdown is another obstacle as I don’t have enough money to buy material and
other equipment needed. For now I wait for an order deposit to build.

STYLIST
My name is Herbert Jazz, 37 years old and I am a self
made dreadlock hair stylist. I was born in Bulawayo but
currently staying in Johannesburg. I have been in this
business for the past 10 years and it is so fulfilling. I love
what I do.
I started doing dreadlocks back home when I was still
involved in community theatre performance. We were
specializing in drama, traditional and contemporary
dancing. I learnt doing dreadlocks from a friend that I
used to dance with. It started off as something that I was
doing for fun.
Dreadlocks where the in thing back then especially for
people who used to perform on stage. When we moved
to Jozi, and unemployment struck, we then realised that
we can use our
talent to generate income and so we started a business
of dreadlock styling and we never looked back ever
since.
One of the challenges that we face as self made artists is
that, we do not have proper infrastructure and funding
to run our business and we end up getting in trouble
with the law because we do not have proper registration
and permits for running this business. The other obsta-
cle is that there are no facilities to register this kind of
business.
The support that we get from the community is amazing.
They keep us going and they trust us with their hair. All
that we want is to be an inspiration to the youths and to
set a good example. We want them to know that there is
more to life other than just staying at home and com-
plaining and waiting for the government to pitch in. Let’s
rise up and use our hands so that we can be the bread
winners that we are supposed to be.

LETS TALK FINANCE WITH YOLANDA
TAKE CHARGE
Have you ever found yourself thinking about what you have done with your income and there seems to
be nothing tangible? No trace down the months of what you have done ? Are you that person who just
spends without a clear budge
t? Allen Lakein once said ‘failing to plan is planning to fail’. We all need to
plan and take charge of our finances. ‘Hayi sizobona ngakho ‘ this saying will get you nowhere. Be
intentional. Hope is surely not a financial plan.
Attaining financial wealth has more to do with what you do with your money and a whole less about
luck. One of the important things one must know is financial planning is a process of evaluating one’s
financial state and their future expectations.
- what is your current money situation?
- What are your money goals?
- What steps are you taking to achieve your goals?
Financial planning helps one to direct their finances in a more meaningful way rather than wondering
were your income in disappearing to.
Every one of us has to have a financial plan. Take charge of your finances, have clear goals, follow
through them and don’t live your finances to fate. Think about where you want to go and have a plan on
how to get there. Execute those plans and don’t stop working on your goals. A good financial plan is a

Special Mention for his television talk show ‘Pink & Purple’ which has been repeated multiple times on
Zimbabwe’s only national TV.
Pink & Purple is a family targeted television talk show that aims to give women an uncontested media
platform to share their ideas and knowledge with audiences across Zimbabwe and Africa. The topics
discussed during this show cut across various divides such as gender, age, and location. The main guests
are women, but where need-be we do invite male specialists in certain unique subjects. The calibre of
our guests will vary from high-to-low profile individuals depending on the nature of the topic being
dealt with. The idea of the show is to give these women a platform for them to tell their stories, their
work, impact, aspirations, discuss topical issues impacting society, and speak to the African citizen
who supports social improvement, women emancipation, and youth empowerment. This show enjoyed
multiple repeats on national TV, but season 2 of the showplayed online instead of ZBC.

the U.S.A PresidentBarak Obama in 2014.
Currently he is based in the UK where he is studying his Masters in Filmmaking with the
University for the Creative Arts under a fully funded prestigious award program called
Chevening Scholarship.
My name is Mthabisi Onias. I was born and raised in Bulawayo, in Lobengula West to be exact.
I have been producing videos since 2012 as a way of paying part of my University fees and
expenses and also I was trying to take care of my mother who was always in and out of hospital
at the time until her passing in 2017 due to cancer.
Growing up poor, moving from house to house in Bulawayo without a home of our own, is what
became my greatest motivator in life. I promised myself that I will try and do better to raise my
own kids in a different environment in the future. I haven’t really made it in life yet but so far, I
love how my life has been shaping over the years. It’s been a journey of ups and downs. In
multiple times, i found myself at the verge of quitting but I am glad I haven’t given up yet.
I have evolved from shooting weddings and birthday videos in 2016 as a way of making a living
to making television shows and i am now recipient of UK Chevening scholarship. It’s really been
an interesting and motivating journey to me.
One of my biggest challenges in my journey has been the lack of access to financial capital to
grow my dream of establishing a fully fleshed TV & Film production studio that I believe will be
an opportunity to many local creatives but this hasn’t really stopped me from pursuing my dream.
I take each and every day as an opportunity to shape and pursue my dream. This is what gives
me the reason to wake up every day.

BOOK REVIEW
‘I dug my own grave’ Which is an anthology that
was published last year (2020) in September by
Pentolacut Publishers.
This book provokes society on realism and with its
metaphoric title ‘l dug my own grave’ exposes life
as a teacher that never speaks but uses actions to
communicate with its students and gives its
students (humans) a chance to choose which
lessons they want to learn, therefore the decisions
that we make, whether good or bad, they may have
unexpected consequences.
In that respect each and every story in the book
gets the readers back to the analysis mentioned
above, and it is dedicated to the society with hope
that it will change the way they think. The
following is blurb (about the book that is usually
placed at the back of the book)
About the book
_This book is an intellectual odyssey into history,
love, lust, crime and a trickle outlook on
espionage.
The author not only takes you on an exciting
journey of storytelling, he also alludes on how our
choices In life lead to our inevitable end, death.
Stories like ‘Village Stalker’ and ‘Sometime before
1980’ illustrate how decisions can affect multiple
lives, a choice whether coming from a place of love
or hate.
It cannot escape the clutches of death if that was
the destined path. In summary, the author is trying
to show us how in the subtle everyday we literally
make grave decisions and how we choose to live
and think is not only for ourselves but for society
at large.

SHORT STORY
COMPLETE CYCLE
“These damn roaches,” screamed Jack as Tony ran for his life, behind him was Jack’s wife Karen who angrily
ran after him with a shoe in her hand. Tony knew what the shoe represented he had lost so many relatives by
its hand. Uncle Tom had been unrecognizable after the shoe had squashed him against the wall. If only he
could flyKaren would never catch him, he had long heard the tales of how his ancestors had learnt to fly in
order to escape their eternal nemesis, the humans.
Today he couldn’t die maybe tomorrow but definitely not today, not the day he had waited for his entire
life for. Today was the night of his honeymoon. This only happens once in a males’ life and he would not
die hours before it. At that moment Harrell’s face flashed in his mind, like a sort of a motivator, Tony sped
towards the refrigerator giving Jack and Karen false navigation of where he was headed. As soon as they
changed course heading towards him, he took a quick U-turn which made Karen fall whilst attempt to
roundabout and strike Tony.
A few meters away Harrell sat under the closet unable to eat her mind racing her heart pulsing. She loved
Tony but she was not ready for what tonight would then mean for their relationship. She had been wed to a
couple of men before and they had consummated their marriages but she didn’t want that for her and Tony.
He had taken care of her intrusion of children as though they were his own, he didn’t deserve mother nature’s
curse at least not from her. The thought of giving him up for another periplaneta scared her it
made her antennas twitch with outrageous fear.
Time was not on her side Harrell had to head back to the kitchen where her intrusion had built settlement.
She hoped that her children were all safe but she understood that times had changed, there was drought upon
the land. The Humans had grown greedy of the little that they had, no longer willing to share like during the
times of earlier cockroaches.
Only the lucky ones where caught, put in a glass cage and sold at pet stores to rich families who did not want
troublesome loud pets. While the unlucky ones were caught and cooked in stranger countries they would be
grilled and eaten as relish. Tony and Harrell had been together for numerable number of weeks now and each
time when Harrell approached the peak of her fertility, she refused to consummate the marriage. Tony had
begun to feel insecure in the relationship maybe she only liked him helping out with the children, was she not
attracted to him? Why though? He did have the shiniest wings than everyone else in their intrusion.
Meanwhile, Tony was on a run for his life but he knew he had to finish up here so as not to keep Harrell
waiting. Heading straight for the television he knew exactly where he was going to hide. Upon his arrival at
the television Tony squeezed his way towards a pile of electric cables where he knew Karen wouldn’t dare
come close to them. Meaning that another day of running for his life had come to an end. He knew that soon
the humans would set a trap for him but for today he had been the victor triumphing over the shoe and two
fully matured human beings, he was quite satisfied with himself.
Later that night whilst the others had gone about to scavenge through Karen’s unwashed dishes for another
round of food, he cornered Harrell and forced himself on her in order to consummate the marriage. After
he was done with the consummation feeling overly proud of himself Harrell sobbed still where he had left
her. She was not hurt by the factthat he had forced himself on her but because she knew now, he was going to
succumb to the fate of all her previous baby daddies who never got to meet their children.
The Byo Story magazine page 36
Tony was confused what came next, his mother had never taught him anything about what happens after the
consummation. Now that he thought about it, there were no fathers in their intrusion for him to ask only
mothers who raised their children with step fathers who later disappeared. As his mind wondered he felt one
of his wings being ripped off his back.
Was it Karen? No if it was Karen, he would have his face attached to the bottom of a shoe. The pain he felt
hurt but it felt right. “Tony I am sorry but now that we have consummated, I need to eat you so that I can
fed your children that I am sure are forming inside me as we speak.” Harrell’s sweet voice consoled him now
he understood the absence of his father from his own childhood. This was the life of a male roach. His mind
continued to wonder as Harrell ripped him limb to limb. “Eat me with no shame Harrell because in no time
you will have hundreds of me, hundreds more of my brothers and sisters and goodbye mother
I will die proud for being your mate”, said Tony as Harrell devoured him.
The end. .

POETRY CORNER
EVERY DROP COUNTS
Waiting for the rains,
Throats in variable thirst pains.
The country has now turned into a desert,
We choking on solids, no drop to make desserts.
The sun is blazing, tarred roads turns in to a mirage,
All shiny like driving into an oasis.
Ohk!
Let me stop.
Let me try to cope.
To cope with thought of waking up.
Waking up with a thirsty throat.
Not for kisses no, but for a drop of water.
To cope with the thought of a sleepless nights.
Tossing and turning thinking about a bucket of water.
To cope with the thought of staring at my people suffering.
Surely the country has now turned into a desert.
Pipelines drying out,
Eaten by rust, inside they are worn out.
No more selfies as we pout,
Only thirsty faces in water queues,
Accompanied by stinky armpits.
Typhoid and cholera now worse than corona,
Running water,
Running tummies.
Now I have a timetable of bathing.
I have a timetable to do big job number 2.
I have a timetable to wash my laundry.
One thing I don’t have a timetable for, yikuyalayinela ibhawuza.
Every drop counts,
Weighing in litres or an ounce.
I wish for the rains to be upon us,
Even if on me the mosquitoes will pounce.
As buying water is straining my accounts,
I am running out of allowance.

MAKE UP TIPS
I’m Martha Chikozho commonly known as “Marita”. I am a self-taught makeup & lash artist based in
Bulawayo and aged 20.
Basically I do all forms of makeup, I.e photoshoots, events, weddings and editorial shoots. My makeup tips
are on how to apply your eyeshadow especially in a time like now where we wear lots of masks.. Our eyes
have become our most prominent feature
.
Before any eyeshadow application always remember to prep your eyelid by adding a little concealer to
your lid and gently blend it until its evenly distributed. This will not only allow your eyeshadow to sit for
a longer period but it will really bring out it’s pigmentation.
After preparation you can start your application remembering
you can alter the colours you use in order to suit you .It doesnt
always have to be bright and bold. If you are a quieter
individual you can go for more neutral colous such as
nudes, browns and black but invest in a blending brush. This
will allow you to have a more finished and proffessional look.
Keep your blended colour withing your crease.
If you are going to do something glamorous, you can add cut crease to your look as shown above. This is
achieved by adding a thin layer of concealer from your eye following your crease shape and blending it
then adding a shimmering eye shadow or glitter on top of the concealer
Happy Eye-shadowing & remember practice makes perfect.
