ictory through Jesus Christ!Allow me to share this with you this morning, that we are guaranteed victory when we are in

VJesus’ Christ. 1Corinthians 15:57 reads ‘..thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through

our Lord Jesus Christ.’ Growing up, we knew little about paid TV, where one subscribes on a
monthly basis to access many TV channels. In those times, we would only have access to a
single free TV channel. Since only one programme could be aired at a time, we used to watch a
lot of what we called delayed soccer matches which could not have been aired at the time they
played. With delayed matches we would already know the results when watching them, but we
would still watch them anyway. I will come back to this analogy.
While victory is guaranteed, it does not mean that there will not be a battle to fight. It is called
victory because of the battle that precedes it. There is no victory without a battle. There would
not be a David without a Goliath! I want to leave a word of encouragement with you, that the
presence of battle does not mean the absence of victory or the absence of God. While you may
be finding yourself in that tricky and sticky situation, where nothing seems to be working and
pain appears to be your daily bread, it is a battle but victory is certain.
Back to our delayed match! Even though we knew that team A beat team B, the delayed match
still had to be played and we still had to watch it. Regardless of how the game appeared to
favor team B, we already knew that team A won. Nothing took us by surprise for we already
had the results. No game moments would take us to our feet because this was a delayed
match whose results we already knew. In our life and walk with the Lord Jesus, we must not be
frustrated, surprised or worried by the battles that come. He has promised us victory. We are
watching a delayed match whose results are that we have won the match.
When David went out to face Goliath, he already told him that God had given him victory.
Because greater is He who is in us than the one in the world, we have victory over the world
and all its troubles through Him. Therefore, when challenges come, we need not forget what
The Lord has promised us, victory! At no point must we worry about what the outcome will
be, but like David declare what we will do after winning the battle. Our victory is guaranteed in
Jesus. If you have not accepted Jesus as Lord and
Savior, do so now and enjoy walking in victory. Before the battle even begins, we are already
working in victory. We have victory over sickness. Victory over any attack from the enemy of
peace.
Let us therefore walk with our heads high, before during and after battle because victory is
certain!

15 Secs of Local Music with NguTrust Nyathi
This month The Byo Story Arts Hub decided to
move with the times and introduce our first ever
video blog of the month. We got a chance to catch
up with the man behind the magic. He not only has
an ear for music but an eye for the beautiful city
of Kings and Queens. A man that set social media
abuzz with all the right
reasons. He randomly takes pictures of our beau-
tiful city and still manages to give back to our Arts
industry through the video blog. A young man that
did not let his battle with
depression stop him from chasing his dreams.

The Byo Story page 12

Who is Trust Nyathi?
Trust is a 27-year-old gentleman who hails from Plumtree and is currently based in Bul-
awayo.
Lets set the record straight. Which neighborhood is Trust representing?
I am from Lobengula West but have grown fond of the ever-growing low-density sub-
urb of Cowdray Park. A lot of people tend to mistake my jokes about the suburb to
reality.
Tell us all about 15 Secs of Local Music
15 Secs of Local Music is an initiative that started late last year. On the initiative, I ex-
tract 15 seconds of either visuals or audio of any local music and post it with a link of
course.
What is the inspiration behind the vlog?
There is a gap that has not been filled and not much is covered about our local music.
Not all our music gets airplay on our few stations. The initiative is mostly about driving
local talent to be noticed with the little I have at my disposal.
What has been the response to the show?
The response has been massive. I have managed to introduce a lot of artists that were
previously unknown. In some cases, I get calls from people asking who the artists are
and where people can access them. Like any journey, there are few bumps along the
way. Sometimes accessing content is extremely difficult and in most cases, I get
ghosted by the very same artists I try to promote.
What motivates you and keeps you going?
I am someone who deals with chronic depression. This has pushed me to help others
who are facing the same condition. In the long run I managed to partner with WOTA
Clinic and address the mental health issues that are often ignored.
What are hopes for the future?
I look forward to growing the vlog and be able to have sponsored adverts. I would also
love to expand my reach and spread the love for our local artists.
Any words of encouragement to someone out there?
We are at the age where information travels fast. Artists should invest more in their dig-
ital branding and visibility, so their content reaches a wider audience.

YADS(Young Artist Development
School)

Young Artists Development School is a nonprofit Organisation whose aim is to allow young
people interested in starting a career in theatre and film. It gives people an opportunity to
participate in each aspect of production making under the mentorship of a professional practi-
tioner then apply these skills to the staging or shooting of a production. This is done to devel-
op the skills of young Artists for their future independence.
Mzingaye Ngwabi is the founder of the Organisation. The Organisation was founded in No-
vember 2017 at Northlea with some of the Northlea drama club members of that time.
Currently we are running a project called Indodakazi Mwanasikana. This project was motivated
by the impact of covid 19 on the future of girls in our communities whereby when it was time
to go back to school a lot of girls dropped out of school due to forced commitments and un-
planned pregnancies.
The Yads project seeks to educate the masses about social issues revolving around communi-
ties. By using the Indodakazi/Mwanasikana play that is being displayed at various high-density
suburbs in Bulawayo, communities are being challenged to come up with their own solutions
on how to eradicate, among other issues, sexual injustices in communities.
Recently the play has been selected to participate at the Bulawayo Arts Festival and under the
Voices of Creatives. Then the community movement will resume on the 11 of June.

KhwamphaClothing Brand

My name is Romeo Gumede. I am the founder of the clothing line called
Khwampha. The khwampha clothing line produces t -shirts, round necks, V necks,
golf t-shirts, shoes and sports wear. This idea which in time became a registered
company in South Africa called Khwampha Brands and projects started as an idea
in my head.
I grew up In Bulawayo, Zimbabwe and there is a certain
language that we spoke, that was created by us kasi
people and it wasn’t meant to be understood by
everyone. Khwampha means ‘right there’ derived
from the Ndebele words khonaphana or khona
laphaya These are words spoken with pride
when one is proud of where they come
from and they say it out loud ,
“ngibuya khwampha Entumbane or
Khwampha Emakhandeni ..
In 2018 I printed the word
khwampha on my T-shirt and
I wore it at a popular Shisa
Nyama in Yoeville
Johannesburg. The feed back
I got from that day was so
overwhelming and that’s how the brand
came into life. Most people were asking me
khwampha nga ? And the logo has a figure
facing down so it got a lot of people thinking
maybe I meant something else. The day I
wore the very first khwampha T-shirt I got
a lot of negative and positive comments
so I pursuedit as a label because it got
people talking.

The Byo Story page 18

I made 4 shirts branded khwampha and
posted them on my Facebook page,
responding to requests. The most amazing
thing about this is that, most of my
customers are from social media and in
just over a night we exceeded 20 000 on
orders.I gave a personal feel to every order and
i delivered it personally and took pictures with
my clients. My clients then posted the pictures
ontheir own profiles and that gave me more
exposure.

Khwampha T-shirt’s were a hit and a trend in 2018
but the revenue wasn’t so good. The Clientele
was limited to the Hillbrow , Berea And
Yoeville community. Those are the people
who actually owned the brand and made it theirs.

I then thought of a marketing strategy “bottled water “.
I started bottling still mineral water and sold it In night clubs and bars
around Johannesburg. The idea was to spread awareness of the Khwampha
Brand but the demand was too much to an extent that the water became a
business on its own.

Imagine trying to market your business through branded water bottles and
you get people saying they are having weddings and other Events and they
would like
khwampha to provider water for them. I provided a lot of water to private
clients. I also taught them about marketing strategies of using water as an
advertisingplatform.

Water Is cheap but the label has all the company information and you know
people like reading stuff so for your advert to reach more people you can
put it on a water label and it is effective. It hasn’t been a smooth ride. We
have faced challenges as a foreign owned company. The opportunities are
not fair. First preference is given to South Africans so every time we look for
business, such obstacles always come up.

Communication is an instance of information transfer, a conversation or discourse. In a
relationship situation it’s more than this. Communication is key. It’s in its truest sense a literal
key. It is the most essential of tools to creating a long lasting relationship. It’s the foundation
therefore. It is the relationship. Communication begins way before the relationship begins. As
you make known your intentions that’s communication on its own. So let me merge how we
choose and communication through conversations.
Conversations are one of the ways that people determine whether or not they are compatible
with each other. How long can we hold a steady and meaningful conversation? Spending time,
having a conversation with a person helps create a bond and connection beyond the surface.
Connection is either established or tested on the basic level of conversation and understand-
ing. It’s the foundation and intellectual connection and an intellectual level of a relationship.
Communication at its simplest. So, communication in a relationship is helping your partner
understand you and you understand your partner intricately. It’s getting your partner to see
things the way you do and vice versa. Socially speaking, communication is the blood of the
relationship. It’s the mind, the most essential tool, it’s the relationship itself. Communication is
a two way street. It’s always been and will always be. It’s expressing yourself, your feelings, and
your plans clearly to the other person. It is in itself an evidence of understanding, caring and
being responsible. Openness, transparency and clarity make up communication is a relation-
ship. And it’s above all else unique to each partnership and relationship.
Communication is the relationship itself. Communication needs to be effective in a relationship
thus it is succeeding in making another person see things the way you see them. One needs
to be clear in what they are saying; Effective communication sort of creates a oneness kind of
vibe. You become in sync with the other person, your person. Take it this way, your commu-
nication between you and your mom is different from that of you and your dad, siblings and
friends. Your Relationship is also like that, communication patterns are different. When people
communicate effectively they forge a language of their own and its ok, it’s beautiful like that.
Humans are dynamic in nature so is communication. Communication moves in levels, as much
as you grow, we grow. If communication is effective you grow together. You get to enjoy your
growth through communication. Allow yourselves to grow.
Explain yourself to your person and your feelings. We are not telepathic for a reason. No one is
going to read your mind, this is not X-man. Choose to date from a point of clarity and objec-
tivity. Be intentional, clear and consistent. Effective communication yields trust in a relationship,
Bonding, a different kind of love, it yields understanding of each other. And definitely gives and
adds value to your relationship. Your relationship is only as strong as your communication and
as dead as your communication. Communication is the relationship So, till next time, Learn to
understand how your person communicates and remember Communication is the relationship.

THE STARS ABOVE YOU by Lungile Msimanga
edited by Ruthless_inc
SHORT STORY

You trail down Main Street, positively drunk, clutching your purse tightly against
your side. It’s an old thing, crocodile skin, faux. You think of the $6 and R30 in the
zipped section at the back, and what you will do with it. There follows a steady
humming noise between your ears, static like, and you remember how difficult
you find it to think after downing anything more than 4 glasses of whatever. But
you do this often anyway, to dull the disgust and humiliation of
disappearing your head behind the steering wheel of a stranger’s car, the urgent
pressure of a foreign hand pushing you down continually, rhythmically, until you
gag, or swallow, or both. Half the time the alcohol doesn’t quite work. You’ve
begun to suspect that you’ve acquired a taste for it, that it’s not just about the
inebriation anymore, and you’re unsure whether you resent yourself for this.
Regardless, you’d rather your body not be a chest of useless memories, so it’s
better this way.
The city lights blink in your face, calling you. You step away from the pavement,
onto the road, and someone releases a steady stream of cusses as a car swerves
sharply and tires screech. You drop to your knees, hiccup an apology, and laugh.
Gosh, wouldn’t it be weird to die in a plaid miniskirt, skyscraper stilettos you
nicked from your cousin’s much, much older girlfriend, and a military-style tank
top that might have been fashionable the year before you were born?
You think of your mother, dead, and that perhaps she’s burning amongst the
stars above you, a ball of gas as black as her inky skin. You fall on your side, curl
into something almost
embryonic, and bawl. It’s 01:17 hrs. and the shop windows eye ball the sky, bald
brown
mannequins’ hands on hips, mocking you with floppy smiles.
You stare at a white mink blanket in the window of Dolores’ and decide that
perhaps you should get it for Tata later during the month. Your friend, Paula,
had one just like it
- Made in Bangladesh - and you remember running your hand over the downy
fur and
sinking yourself into the lush silkiness, imagining it a heavy, tired animal that
threw itself over you and swallowed you whole into its warm belly.
You’re still thinking this when the rain spits on your skin, tiny shimmery drops

The Byo Story page 34

that fall in an invisible sheet and leave you scrambling back to the pavement. You
huddle against a pillar lined with posters of Bev and the Sexy Angels, taped stra-
tegically over more posters of a call to a public hearing to debate some constitu-
tional amendment. The words swim before your eyes, turning into a black stream
that drips down over the chipped blue paint. You don’t realize you’re crying until
you focus on Joshua’s statue, and his head slants sharply to one side in the soft
rain.
There’s a black carrier bag rolling at his feet, two discarded Chicken Slice box-
es together with it. You wonder about the people who must have sat there and
stuffed their faces; if they did stuff their faces, or if they picked through the food
delicately, like posh little birds. Then you think that the name Chicken Slice hardly
makes sense at all, because chicken doesn’t come in slices - it’s bread that does,
and cake, and a whole bunch of other things. But never chicken.
You laugh, thinking of your high school years and that perhaps you might have
been intelligent, had you had half the chance, but there was always something
more demanding; the cut off water supply, the unattended electricity bill, Tata’s
wet cough that persisted through the years and had now graduated to having a
name and being the third, unwanted member of the family.
You remember the first time you did it, with a man who wore designer cashmere
sweaters, drove expensive cars, and lived in a lofty apartment in a suburb some-
where whose name reminded you of an imported city. His skin smelt like metallic
rain, and you’d come away that night feeling clean, like you’d sunk your body in
a pool of crystals. Tata had taken one look at you, and cried. Not in a loud, un-
abashed widow’s voice but quietly, deeply, his face falling. You’d shaken him up
at first light the next morning and held his hand all the way to the hospital, your
body still raw and harmed from the previous night’s affair - that’s when his cough
had gotten its name.
There had been other times after that, too many to shake out of your skin, but
over time you’d begun to feel like you’d been reduced to nothing, like a no-name
brand on a shop shelf that no one wanted to touch or those wrinkled, tag less
pieces of clothing in the bales that lined the pavement during the weekends on
market street.
Tata knew, of course, but pretended not to, his mild brown eyes staring into the
distance or his fingers rubbing at an invisible stain on his trousers whenever he
should have been saying something. In the end, your communication had dis-
tilled down to wordless conversation and persistent bouts of coughing. Inwardly
you grieved this, perhaps you both did, but there was never enough time to sit
down and watch parts of yourselves falling away.
To be continued . . .
