02 I have now been the Chief Executive of this amazing charity, which is in its 30th year, for six months, something I have enjoyed immensely thus far, working alongside our brilliant, caring and professional team. We are like a family which is so important when we are looking after people at Heartbeat House who are experiencing very stressful and anxious times with their loved ones, often undergoing serious and life-changing invasive cardiac surgery. My own family have supported (Wessex) Heartbeat for over 20 years due in no small part to our son, Alexander, now aged 24 years and a qualified Physiotherapist, having to undergo four bouts of major open-heart surgery at the Wessex Cardiac Unit at the University Hospital, Southampton, so we are acutely aware of what an incredible centre of excellence we have on our doorstep. We are very humbled and privileged to be working alongside so many of the country's top cardiac surgeons, cardiologists and healthcare professionals to help fund cutting edge projects because of pioneering research at the unit. One of the many projects we are supporting this year is the work of Becky Cutler, who has been employed by the Wessex Cardiac Unit, and funded by Heartbeat, as a Cardiac Youth Worker specifically to provide psychological support for the congenital patients in the age group between 11 and 25 years; read more about Becky and her work on page 4. None of the funding that we provide or the facilities and services that we offer at Heartbeat House are possible without the generosity and kindness of our friends at Rotary and so many advocates of the charity, including many of you who have supported our events; so far this year, and amongst others, we have organised our everpopular annual Cycle Sportive, two successful golf days and our fantastic Summer Party. Upcoming, we are incredibly excited to be holding our 30th anniversary fundraiser, 'MUSICALS FROM THE HEART', at the Mayflower Theatre Southampton, in the presence of very special guests, FOR ONE NIGHT ONLY ON SUNDAY 17TH SEPTEMBER, you can read further about it later in the newsletter. We also have our 'Black Tie' Autumn Ball, often in the past known as 'The Mark Ind Beef and Bid fundraising event', which takes place at the Leonardo Grand Harbour Hotel, Southampton, on Saturday 11th November. A limited number of tables and tickets are available at £599 per table or £65 per person respectively by contacting me [email protected] A huge thank you to you all for your incredible support; it is genuinely and truly appreciated. Like any charity, we rely so much on your very valuable donations and rest assured, no donation is too small, and we will always make sure you know where your money is going and for what specifically it is being used. Keep spreading the word about Heartbeat, which is 'Supporting Wessex (Hampshire, Dorset and the Isle of Wight) and Beyond', keep coming to our events in 2024, and remember #EVERYONEHASAHEART. With heartfelt thanks again and best wishes to you all. Mark Ind Chief Executive of Heartbeat Welcome from our CEO! 03 Dear Friends,

20 Heartbeat has invested £26,000 in a new role supporting young people with heart conditions. Becky Cutler's new position as a Cardiac PEEER (Patient, Empowerment, Self Esteem, Employability and Resilience) Youth worker at the University Hospital Southampton (UHS) has been completely funded by Heartbeat, with the role designed to support the mental wellbeing of 11–25-year-olds with a long term or lifelimiting heart condition. Becky is a constant line of support, a friendly face that they have seen before as they go through their cardiac journey. Being a heart patient can create enough anxiety and worry for anybody, but for those growing up with the condition it can be even harder as they also have to contend with the day-to-day trials and tribulations of adolescence. That's why a big part of Becky's role is providing 1-on-1 emotional and practical support as an inpatient and outpatient. Another key part of her role is transitioning patients from paediatrics to adults. There is a virtual transition service where she can offer an hour appointment for a young person where they can discuss all things to do with transition. This can range from understanding the technical terms about their condition, what to do in an emergency, how to look after themselves, and give important advice when it comes to recreational activities and life skills. Other services Becky plays a supportive role in include the running of a virtual youth group, organising fun days, supporting patients at clinic appointments, and helping them speak up to make their own decisions about their care. This is particularly important when some of our young people are facing end-of-life care. It is crucial for them to feel seen, understand what they are going through, and be in full control of any decisions that they need to make. We are delighted to fund Becky's position. This role is vitally important, and we are proud to be funding her for the foreseeable future. 04 Cardiac Youth Worker Providing Psychological Support Heartbeat are pleased to be currently supporting a number of projects, particularly the amazing technology used to create 3-D heart models enabling surgeons to practice surgery on infants and young children prior to their complicated cardiac procedures, a Palliative Care Specialist Nurse to support very young cardiac patients with life-limiting and life-threatening conditions and their families, a project related rapid response to heart failure and a project assessing the DNA damage to heart attack patients and how this might be repaired. In addition, we have just commenced our Cardiac Prehab Pilot which will focus on patients, who are about to undergo serious invasive cardiac interventions, and how being fitter, healthier and in the right frame of mind psychologically for their surgery, will increase their chances of a speedier recovery and reduce the risk of further procedures. Appeals and Projects Update:

02 Tickets are enclosed (£2 per ticket or £10 per book). You have a better chance to win by buying further tickets from Heartbeat by phoning 02380 706095 or emailing [email protected] Christmas Prize Draw Tuesday, 19th December 2023 An amazing £750 cash prize draw plus other fabulous prizes 05 Rapid Response Heart Failure Nurse Specialist Last year, Heartbeat committed to funding a Pilot Project for a “Rapid Response Heart Failure Nurse Specialist” to provide a rapid response service to heart failure patients. The aim of this project was to reduce the length of stay in hospital for patients with heart failure by either preventing direct admission, instead allowing patients to be treated in their own homes or allowing an early supported discharge. The nurse would visit patients at home, conduct comprehensive clinical examinations, ECG's and blood monitoring. The project has run for a year and to date 46 patients were able to be cared for at home rather than having to come into hospital, this was found to be clinically safe and more desirable for the patients. A further 41 patients were able to have a shorter length of stay in hospital due to rapid review and follow up on discharge, again this was found to be clinically safe. 306 hospital bed days were saved allowing the beds to be used for patients with other conditions needing hospital admission and a total cost saving of nearly £80,000 was made.

02 06 Introducing Our New Community Fundraising and Marketing Manager, Tanya Harder My name is Tanya and I recently started as the new Community Fundraising and Marketing Manager for Heartbeat back in May. I am 32 years of age, been with my partner of 14 years and a massive Disney fan. Over the last 9 years I have volunteered for many different charities as well as participating in challenges raising both money and awareness and even inspi r ing and encouraging others to get involved too, I am all about making a positive difference. I have lived with a pacemaker for the past 14 years and this has provided me with first-hand knowledge of just how important Heartbeat is, not only to the patients but also their loved ones. As part of my role, I have been out and about within the local community, raising awareness and organising fundraising events with local businesses. With all these little ventures out of the office, I am posting on our social media platforms to keep everyone updated with what's happening and what wonderful things are coming up. We have over 48 community events which are taking place between July 2023 and December 2024! These are down to meeting up with local businesses who were keen on getting involved and supporting Heartbeat. We have a variety of events from Quiz to bingo evenings, band and themed nights, and of course a couple of Drag Queen evenings, there is something for everyone. I am also working on getting people involved in volunteering, sorting out our rebranding of Heartbeat, continue building relationships within our community, growing our presence further afield, and venturing into schools to explain about Heartbeat and how important our heart is. If you would like to get in touch, volunteer your time, donate a raffle prize, help to organise your own fundraiser, please do not hesitate in contacting me on 02380 706095 or email me on [email protected]. I am also trying to build our presence on our social media platforms, so please do like and share our pages but also check out our website for all the community events coming up. During the evening, guests were treated to drinks, canapes and live music and heard about the business' growth plans from Managing Director, Richard Clark who said “It is truly a momentous occasion to celebrate 50 years of Rossborough's rich history in Guernsey with our clients and staff. “Marking our milestone year by moving into our refurbished office allows us to look forward to the future with confidence. Of course, our wonderful and very important Heartbeat House, where we have around 25% of families from Guernsey and Alderney stay whilst their loved ones are having surgery at the Wessex Cardiac Unit at Southampton General. They also talked about the psychological support project that is now funded by the charity and will benefit young adults' resident in Guernsey aged 11-25 years who travel to the mainland for cardiac treatment. Rossborough Chairman Clive de la Cour and Managing Director Richard Clarke presented £4000 to Tina Tolley, (AKA Tina 2) Donor Development Manager and Mark Ind CEO at the celebration raised from the staff who chose Heartbeat as their charity of the year, which was then match funded by the company. Since 1973, Rossborough has supported and served the island's people and businesses, providing risk management advice and services, and will continue to do so in the future. Heartbeat would like to thank all involved at Rossborough for their kindness, support and wonderful relationship that we are very proud to have with them. Rossborough Presentation to Heartbeat

20 19 With 33 Clubs now pledging to support Heartbeat in the 3-year commitment, we are delighted that we have now renamed Heartbeat House, Rotary Heartbeat House, back to what the house was named from the early years of the charity, now in its 30th year. The new sign now has pride of place. Those who use the house will know that Rotary played an outstanding part in the “Heartbeat Story “as they helped with the purchase and set up of the charity back in the mid-90's. We all know the success of such an organisation, and we are excited to be able to reunite to help support so many people, which is something that Rotary continue to do historically. We look forward to many more years with Rotary by our side and thank those in District 1110 who have so far pledged. Some clubs have their pins and have completed early, but we have many more to award. We will be looking at a major project with the Pledge funds and will keep in contact once we have news. For those clubs who have not done so, then it is never too late, and we look forward to coming along to meet with you. Thank you! Rotary Heartbeat House Renamed The Three Tuns in Bransgore, New Forest was the venue for the District Governor handover with many guests from District 1110 present. Bill Casey, outgoing DG, handed the reigns over to George Phillips. Tina Tolley (Tina 2) presented Bill with a plaque of recognition for all the support he has shown to Heartbeat in his year as District Governor year 22-23. Thanks to David Scholes President of Ferndown and Parley for his donation from his Presidents dinner of £1,000. It was a pleasure accepting the cheque from him and a great night was had by all at Dudsbury Golf Club. We are looking forward to meeting the members again soon. Rotary and Heartbeat Partnership
