ARTISTIC...AND DELICIOUS!

Local woman creates art with veggie harvest

Look up the hashtag #HarvestArt IMAGES COURTESY OF CARRIE BODEN
on social channels, including Instagram
and Facebook, and you’ll find an array
of colorful designs made with food
gathered in the garden.

Carrie Boden of Milton, a physical
therapist, is one of those creative artists.

“This is my first year doing harvest
art,” she said “This is actually my
family’s first year with a full vegetable

garden - and
we have so
many veg-
etables, more
than we ever
expected.
“It’s been
harder to give
them away
(due to the
pandemic),
and with the
abundance of
colorful me-
dium filling up my kitchen, I just became
inspired to start making designs. Once I
started, I couldn’t stop!”
Vegetables shown on these pages
were grown and sourced using soil from
Blessings Blends (blessingsblends.com)
and vegetables from Garden Shack in
Lewes (gardenshackfarm.com).
“My big, beautiful vegetables started
with about 10 tons of garden blend soil
from Blessings Blends in Milford, and
amazingly healthy plants from Garden
Shack Farms.”
The unique work is as eye-catching as
it is delicious, said Boden, who admits
creating the art is rewarding on many
levels.
“Being creative is amazing for so
many reasons, but for me, it’s a great
way to manage anxiety and depres-
sion,” she said. “In my mind, creating
art equates to self-care, which is more
important than ever right now.
“Prior to this summer, my creative
outlets included knitting, jewelry-mak-
ing, calligraphy, drawing, and lots and
lots of coloring.”

Homeowners may feel like they’re Reducing trash generated at home can greatly benefit the environment.
always taking out the trash. Active
families tend to generate a lot of gar-
bage, and it’s not uncommon to find the
kitchen trash pail overflowing each day.

A report from SaveOnEnergy found
that garbage production numbers are
staggering. The average American
produces 4.4 pounds of trash each day.
That means the average family of four
can generate 17.6 pounds of trash a day.
Every year, Americans produce 254 mil-
lion tons of trash. The Conference Board
of Canada found Canadians produce
more garbage per capita than any other
country.

Thanks to modern sanitation sys-
tems, which remove garbage in a
timely manner, it’s difficult to get a good
handle on just how much trash families
generate. But the size of landfills clearly
illustrates that garbage is a concern.

for old rags made from towels and T-shirts that are past their

• Mend broken items if possible. Before tossing something

The Victoria State Government says
accidental poisoning is most commonly
a problem in young children. Most
poisonings happen at home, but they
also can occur while visiting friends and

says that more than 300 children in
the United States between the ages of

die as a result of being poisoned.

Many everyday items can be poison-

Household plants

Although many common indoor plants only cause mild
gastrointestinal symptoms if consumed, daffodils, dumb cane,
foxglove, hydrangea, lilies, oleanders, rhododendrons, and
wisteria may have toxins that can affect the stomach, respira-
tory system, liver, or heart. Speak with a pediatrician about
how to keep kids safe around these plants.

Alcohol/nicotine

It may only take a small amount of alcohol to make children
ill. Alcohol can be found in beverages, but also in perfume,
mouthwash, cleaning products, hand sanitizers, and over-the-
counter cold medications. NYU Langone says alcohol poison-
ing in children can cause low blood sugar, which can lead to
seizures and coma.

Liquid nicotine or nicotine replacement gum can be hazard-
ous as well. Illicit substances also carry serious health conse-

or seizures may result depending on the substance.

Keeping children away from potential poisons takes dili-
gence. Certain substances may be best kept behind lock and

Inorganic mulches are permanent be-

Dig an inch or two out from the outer edge of the foliage
so you get as much of the roots as possible. After the plants
are out of the ground, turn them over so the roots are facing
up. This lets you judge better where to make your divisions.
If a plant’s root ball is thick with roots and difficult to divide,
try using two garden forks back-to-back that you jab into the
roots, then pull the forks in opposite directions, splitting the
roots.

Try to dig a hole slightly larger than the root ball, being sure
that the crown of the plant is at the same level as it was grow-
ing before. After planting, check for air pockets in the soil.
Tamp the soil down firmly around the new transplants to force
the soil to directly contact the roots. Always water the newly
transplanted perennials well right after planting, then water
about every two or three days for a week or so.

So cut back and divide your perennials this fall, and you will
