8 | HOME +GARDEN HOME + GARDEN The Lewes Tulip Celebration is a cherished annual event that has been delighting residents and visitors alike for over a decade. Jointly sponsored by the Lewes Chamber of Commerce and Lewes in Bloom, the 16th annual celebration is scheduled to take place from April 1 to April 20. In preparation for the event, Lewes in Bloom volunteers planted 31,000 tulips and 5,000 other spring bulbs in the fall of 2024. These efforts result in a vibrant display of over 100 different tulip varieties across more than 20 locations throughout the town. To help attendees navigate the floral displays, a “Tiptoe To The Tulips” map will be available at the Lewes Chamber of Commerce Visitor Center, located in the historic Fisher-Martin House in Zwaanendael Park. Blooming Lewes A Celebration of Tulips and Spring The celebration spans three weekends and includes a variety of activities beyond the tulip displays. Lewes in Bloom will host a tulip sale April 18 and 19 at Bank Street Plaza on Second Street from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., or until they sell out. Additionally, “History in Bloom” walking tours are scheduled for April 12, offering insights into Lewes’ rich maritime history and the diverse tulip varieties planted around town. These tours begin at the Historic Lewes main campus at 110 Shipcarpenter Street and cost $10 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under. The Lewes Tulip Celebration not only showcases the town’s Dutch heritage but also fosters a sense of community pride and involvement. The festival has become a beloved tradition, marking the arrival of spring and highlighting the collaborative spirit of Lewes. Check the pressure gauge located near the lever of your extinguisher, and look for any visible signs of damage or wear. Most high-quality extinguishers have a lifespan of five to 15 years, but that period can differ depending on the manufacturer. Investing in a home security system is one of the most effective strategies for protecting your property. Many companies provide 24/7 emergency monitoring services that will notify you and the authorities if your alarm detects a potential threat. You’ll have peace of mind, whether at home or away. Inspect and replace locks around your home as needed. If their basic working integrity is compromised, whether on a door or window, you may be at risk of losing valuables and jeopardizing your family’s safety. Before you get too deep into dreaming of lying poolside just steps from home, however, there are a few things to consider. Utilities Look around your yard and see whether there are any overhead wires or other utilities that need to be moved. If so, bear in mind that they will be moved at your expense and on the utility company’s timeline. Call about any underground utilities. Check on your original house plans or make a free 811 call to confirm what’s under your yard. Check for easements on your property while you’re talking to utility companies and the city or county records offices. you want the pool. 46 | HOME +GARDEN HOME + GARDEN SPRING RECIPE Crab Fritters Ingredients: • 1 lb fresh crab meat, drained and cleaned • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs • 1/4 cup mayonnaise • 1 egg, beaten • 2 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped • 1 tsp Dijon mustard • Vegetable oil or canola oil for frying • Seasoning: 1 tsp Old Bay seasoning, 1/2 tsp garlic powder, salt and pepper to taste Instructions: 1. In a large bowl, combine the crab meat, breadcrumbs, mayonnaise, beaten egg, parsley, mustard, and seasoning mix. 2. Mix well until everything is evenly combined. 3. Form the mixture into small fritters, about 1-2 inches in diameter. 4. Heat vegetable or canola oil in a skillet over medium heat. 5. Fry the fritters for 2-3 minutes on each side, or until golden. 6. Remove from the skillet and drain on paper towels. 7. Serve with tartar sauce or a fresh squeeze of lemon. Enjoy!
