8 THE CAPE CURRENT | MAY 28, 2026The Beach isSTARTING TO ACT UPOUT & ABOUTKadet Kelly is a Rehoboth Beach drag entertainer known for her campy comedy, chaotic charm and commitment to uplifting queer joy. A proud drag daughter of Kristina Kelly, she’s spent three years serving sass, sequins and side-eye across Delaware’s drag scene. Follow her on instagram @_kadetkelly and facebook @gleecharliek.KADET KELLY+ Drag QueenSomething shifts in Rehoboth Beach right before summer officially hits. You feel it before you even see it.The traffic gets weird. The iced coffees get larger. People suddenly start wearing outfits that suggest they lost a bet. Every restaurant patio becomes packed with sunburnt tourists aggressively explaining where they’re “actually from.”And the seagulls?Violent.I knew summer was close this week when I watched a man confidently walk down the Boardwalk carrying two Orange Crushes, a slice of pizza, no shirt, one flip flop and absolutely no visible survival instincts. That’s beach season, baby. We’re still in that strange little pre-Pride limbo where the town hasn’t fully descended into chaos yet, but you can feel the warning signs everywhere. Every local has now mastered the delicate art of weaving around slow-moving families while whispering “excuse me” through clenched teeth.Another seasonal phenomenon? Every gay man suddenly dresses like a retired volleyball coach from 1997.Tiny shorts. Tank tops. Mustaches appearing out of nowhere. It’s beautiful. It’s terrifying. It’s gay migration season. And despite all the madness, there’s something weirdly comforting about seeing the town come back to life again.Suddenly everybody’s asking the same question again:“So where are we going tonight?”Which, in Rehoboth, is usually the beginning of either a great story or a minor medical incident.Happy almost Pride Month.Stay hydrated. 10 THE CAPE CURRENT | MAY 28, 2026Chef Hari Cameron is a renowned culinary expert, consultant and restaurateur known for his modern farm-to-table approach. Celebrated for his work in the hospitality industry, he champions high-quality MidAtlantic ingredients.HARI CAMERON+ Chef consultantTHE CURRENT BITEA New Market & Kitchen From Chef David KnellerAlot of emotions hit me when I think about another chef opening a restaurant on the same street where I opened a restaurant many years ago - especially a chef as talented as Chef David Kneller.Years ago, I owned a(MUSE.) on Baltimore Avenue in Rehoboth Beach. That street in Rehoboth feels like home to me - cooks stepping outside after service late at night, the sound of dishes clanging in the kitchen, guests dressed up for dinner walking from restaurant to restaurant and the smell of the ocean drifting through the alleyways. Now another chef is adding his story to that street.Chef David Kneller recently opened 59 Market inside the former Mark Showell Interiors building next to Aqua Grill, transforming the longtime space into a beautiful market and soon-to-open restaurant. When I stepped inside recently to sit down with him, I noticed how much care had gone into every detail. The room feels warm and intentional, with curated shelves, beautiful lighting, in-house-baked pastries and breads, and cooks moving with purpose.David and I first met years ago when he staged at a(MUSE.). He reminded me a lot of myself at that age - hungry, thirsty for knowledge and full of passion. The kind of young cook who wants to soak up everything happening around them: every technique, ingredient and movement in the kitchen.During our conversation, he told me he started cooking at just 12 years old at a pizza shop in Denton, Maryland. One night, everyone called off, and he watched the chef work the kitchen alone. He just knew. He was amazed by the chef's speed, the guests' happiness with the food and the beauty of the plates coming out of the kitchen. That stage at a(MUSE.) eventually propelled him toward more ambitious kitchens, leading him to Grace in Chicago, the Michelin-starred restaurant under acclaimed Chef Curtis Duffy. Each day at 59 Market, the team sits down together for a family meal. We spoke about how his leadership style, which involves leading by example and working alongside his team in the kitchen, has taught him patience, precision, calm leadership and treating his staff like family. After years of helping lead kitchens and open restaurants for Bluepoint Hospitality, he realized it was finally time to create something of his own. When he saw the building on Baltimore Avenue - one he had admired for quite some time - he knew it was the perfect place to bring his vision to life. The market offers curated specialty ingredients, ready-to-eat meals, pastries, breads, sandwiches and products guests may not find elsewhere locally. One of the biggest standouts is the brown butter chocolate-chunk cookie - a recipe that went through 34 versions before they landed on the final product. We also discussed the Cusio meatballs, inspired by his late friend and sous chef. David said he had never tasted meatballs quite like them before, and today they remain on the menu as a dish that lets you feel the love.As we talked more about his cooking style, David reflected on a short rib dish he experienced while working under Curtis Duffy that layered familiar ingredients with Southeast Asian flavors and techniques. That philosophy continues to define much of his cooking today. He loves creating dishes grounded in flavors and comforts people already know and love while introducing refined twists and influences from cuisines around the world. We also spoke honestly about the challenges of opening a restaurant in Rehoboth Beach and the patience required to do it right. As our conversation wound down, we spoke about what success means to him now. He explained that while restaurants are still businesses, true success comes from being able to cook food they're passionate about while making the community happy. And standing there on Baltimore Avenue again, watching another chef chase his dream on the same street where I once chased mine, felt strangely full circle. 18 THE CAPE CURRENT | MAY 28, 2026Summer at the Delaware beaches looks a little different depending on who you ask. Some people are perfectly happy spending six straight hours in a beach chair with a book and a cooler nearby. Others are already halfway through a bike ride before most people have finished breakfast. Some plan their day around oysters and happy hour reservations, while others are chasing live music, keeping kids entertained or making sure the dog gets included in every stop. The good news? There isn't a wrong way to do summer here. THE KEEP IT MOVIN' CROWD For those that don't vacation to relax.MORNINGStart with a run along the Rehoboth Boardwalk while the town is still waking up. AFTERNOONKeep moving and head to Dewey Beach Watersports for jet skis, paddleboards or kayak rentals.Insider Tip: The bay side is usually calmer for beginners trying paddleboards or kayaks.EVENINGHead to Dave Marshall Tennis & Pickleball Center in Lewes for a few matches before rewarding yourself with burgers and beers at Big Oyster Brewery (ping-pong in the backyard count as cardio). THE PARTY-HARDY CREW The beach is the destination. The friend group is the reason.MORNINGNobody in this category is setting an alarm. Ease into the day with brunch at The Starboard where Bloody Marys and orange crushes are practically part of the menu.AFTERNOONClaim a stretch of sand in Dewey and spend the day rotating between swimming, beach games and group photos you'll forget to post. Day-drinking comes with no judgement here.Insider Tip: Pick a meeting spot before everyone scatters. A beach umbrella is not a landmark.NIGHTNow things actually start. Catch live music at Bottle & Cork, grab drinks at Rusty Rudder or North Beach, and end up at Nalu Surf Bar where the crowd somehow always seems ready for one more round.Late-night food can only mean one thing: Woody’s crab cakes and fries.Insider Tip: For groups wanting to venture out, without designating a driver, hop on the Jolly Trolley – a seasonal Rehoboth-Dewey shuttle runs all summer long. THE BEACH BUM Maximum relaxation. Minimum movement.MORNINGSkip the crowded municipal sands and start your day somewhere quieter. Head toward Gordon’s Pond or Herring Point at Cape Henlopen State Park, where the vibe is slower and the soundtrack is mostly waves FINDYOUR SUMMERTHE STARBOARD

MAY 28, 2026 | THE CAPE CURRENT 19and seabirds instead of tourists vying for a spot in the sand. Grab coffee and breakfast from The Station on Kings or pick up pastries and coffee from Old World Breads on your way. Before heading to the beach, stop at Lloyd's Market or Touch of Italy and build your beach-day cooler situation: sandwiches, drinks, snacks and all the things you'll inevitably wish you had later.Insider Tip: Locals know the earlier you arrive, the longer your beach day feels. By 9 a.m. you can already feel like you've stolen a few extra hours of summer. And by 10 a.m., the lines to enter the park can get long, especially on busy Saturdays, the park will occasionally shut people out when it gets too full. Don't be that person. AFTERNOONStay put. That's the entire philosophy here. Read a book. Walk the shoreline. Pretend you'll only stay another 20 minutes and then somehow remain there for three more hours. Since you packed ahead of time, lunch becomes sandwiches on the beach instead of abandoning your setup and fighting summer traffic. If you need a break from the sand, drive less than a minute down the road to the Cape May-Lewes Ferry terminal where Grain on the Rocks offers tons of outdoor waterfront seating and pretty views. EVENINGFinish the day by leisurely strolling downtown Lewes and the Canal. Grab ice cream from King's and sit in Canalfront Park watching boats drift through the harbor before heading home. THE OUTDOOR EXPLORER Trails, bikes and spending an entire day under the sun, without stepping foot in the sand.MORNINGStart the day outdoors from the beginning. Grab coffee to-go from Gaia Coffee Co. or fuel up with an açaí bowl from Bountiful Bowls, then take your breakfast somewhere with fresh air and sunshine before the day really gets moving.Insider Tip: This is one of those days where flip-flops will betray you. Wear sneakers now and thank yourself later.LATE MORNING & AFTERNOONHead over to Seagreen Bicycle, conveniently located right along the Junction & Breakwater Trail in Lewes, and rent bikes before heading toward Rehoboth. The roughly six-mile ride into Rehoboth is flat, scenic and beginner-friendly, winding through marshes and wooded stretches before delivering you right into beach-town energy.Once you roll into Rehoboth, don't immediately turn around. Spend some time exploring on two wheels. Cruise the boardwalk, weave through side streets lined with beach cottages and stop wherever the day takes you. Grab a cold drink, split an order of fries, duck into a shop or just park the bikes and people-watch for a while.Insider Tip: The best part of biking here is skipping the summer parking headaches everyone else is dealing with. But be sure to leave yourself enough time to pedal back.EVENINGFinish the day at Crooked Hammock Brewery where lawn games, hammocks, picnic tables and backyard-style energy make it feel like you're hanging out at someone's house. Grab dinner and a cold beer, challenge someone to cornhole and settle into one of the hammocks as the sun starts dropping. THE FAMILY FUN SQUAD Keeping kids happy and everyone entertained.MORNINGStart with Funland on the Rehoboth Boardwalk where kids can jump from kiddie rides to the Sea Dragon while parents pretend they’re only there for the children.AFTERNOONCool off at Jungle Jim’s River Safari Water Park or head over to Midway Speedway for go-karts and mini golf.Insider Tip: Trips to theme parks become a much less expensive outing if you start later in the day, hit up off-peak pricing deals like Jungle Jim's Twilight pass.EVENINGSlow things down with a boardwalk walk, arcade games and a stop at The Ice Cream Store or Kohr Bros before heading home. Plus, a stop into Candy Kitchen is pretty much a kid's rite of passage in this beach town.Insider Tip: Avoid the impatient rants from the backseat while you circle endlessly trying to find parking by boarding the DART bus which loops between the Boardwalk, Rehoboth Park & Ride, and Lewes Transit Center every few minutes (bonus points for not having to pay the meters!)FINDYOUR SUMMERGCFL PRODUCTIONScontinued ▶▶▶

20 THE CAPE CURRENT | MAY 28, 2026 THE FOOD HUNTER Vacation is just an excuse to eat all day.MORNINGStart with brunch at Egg in Rehoboth or Dewey Post in Dewey (both get crowded but offer outdoor dining).AFTERNOONBuild your day around snacks and happy hour. Grab oysters at Henlopen City Oyster House, a beer at Dogfish Head Brewings & Eats or small plates at Salt Air.Insider Tip: If there’s a wait list somewhere, put your name in and wander around. EVENINGGo all in at places like Drift, The Pines or Heirloom. Order dessert even if everyone says they're too full. Insider Tip: Make a reservation ahead of time.NIGHTWrap up with rooftop sushi and cocktails at The Cultured Pearl before the sun goes down. THE ARTS & CULTURE WANDERER Live music, galleries, markets and cool local finds.MORNINGTake a trip to The Brush Factory on Kings in Lewes to browse local art, studios and creative vendors. Head over to Lewes Historical Society and the Cannonball House for a peek back in time.AFTERNOONHead to Rehoboth Art League campus. Wander Gallery 50 or browse shops and creative spaces downtown like Heidi Lowe's jewelry studio.EVENINGCatch a show at Clear Space Theatre or bring a chair and a drink to the Rehoboth or Bethany bandstand for live summer music. If you're lucky enough to be visiting on a Monday or Friday, finish the day at West Side Creative Market where local artists, makers, vintage vendors and food options create an open-air atmosphere that feels more like wandering through a neighborhood gathering than a traditional market. Alternately, catch a show at Clear Space Theatre or bring a chair and a drink to the Rehoboth or Bethany bandstand for live summer music. THE DOG PARENT The dog is coming, obviously.MORNINGStart with a beach walk at Herring Point or Delaware Seashore State Park while temperatures are still cool and crowds are light.Insider Tip: Each town has their own rules for different times of the year. During summer, there are typically more restrictions so be sure to check before heading out! AFTERNOONGrab lunch with your pup at dogfriendly patios like Woody’s, Somewhere, Big Chill Surf Cantina or Nalu Surf Bar.EVENINGWrap up with a canal walk in Lewes or stop at Salty Paws, in Rehoboth, for a homemade, frozen pup-cup before heading home with sandy paws and an entire camera roll dedicated to your dog.

MAY 28, 2026 | THE CAPE CURRENT 23THE CURRENT PURSUITS eining involves using a special net to collect fish, crabs and other aquatic life. A seine net is weighted and has a pole on each side. Two people walk through the water, dragging the net. Then, they haul the net in to see what they’ve caught, returning anything they don’t plan to use for food or bait. The best places to seine are in shallow, calm bays where there is no swimming. Dress to get wet and wear secure shoes (not flip-flops). Look for incoming tides (two hours before high tide is the best time). Several local parks offer seining programs (naturalists supply the equipment and identify the aquatic life you capture), or you can buy a small seine net at a bait and tackle store and try it yourself.* During lower tides, children can use hand nets in tidepools for a fun, DIY version of seining. It’s Seining Men(haden)!THE CURRENT PURSUITCAPE HENLOPEN STATE PARKThe Nature Center at Cape Henlopen State Park offers seining programs twice weekly during the summer for children ages 5 and older with a paying adult. You will get an up-close view of aquatic life and learn how the bay functions as a nursery.DELAWARE SEASHORE STATE PARKSeining programs here offer a chance to pull a 30-foot net through the shallow waters of Rehoboth Bay in order to learn about the diversity of creatures that call the bay home.DUPONT NATURE CENTERLocated where the Mispillion River and Cedar Creek meet and flow out into the Delaware Bay, the DuPont Nature Center is a science-based educational and interpretive facility with interactive exhibits. They offer seining programs in the Delaware Bay during the summer.BY NANCY SAKADUSKI*Use of a seine net requires a Delaware fishing license for residents and nonresidents aged 16-64.NANCY SAKADUSKI + Local GuideNancy is an award-winning writer and editor who has authored 24 published books.
