6 | HOME+GARDEN When planning a landscape, it’s tempting to pick the most colorful, vibrant plants. An eye-popping property filled with yellows, purples, pinks, and other bold colors is sure to catch anyone’s eye. However, the right plant for a property is not always the most colorful. Gardening novices can easily be overwhelmed on a trip to their local garden center, where employees may ask a host of questions that have little to do with homeowners’ preferences and everything to do with the growing conditions What to Know Before Planting around their properties. Those questions may seem a little intense, but they’re well-intentioned. Successful gardening is more about soil conditions and access to sunlight than it is about the plants themselves. An awe-inspiring hydrangea bush will only impress if it’s planted in a location where it can thrive. The Landscape, Nursery and Urban Forestry program at UMass Amherst Extension advises homeowners to learn about the following site conditions, and ultimately share that knowledge with local garden center representatives, before they pick and plant anything around their properties. : The Plant Hardiness Zone Map from the U.S. Department of Agriculture is designed to help gardeners determine which plants are most likely to thrive where they live. The map can be found on the USDA website at usda.gov. : Light availability, intensity, and duration, from full sun to deep shade: Prior to planting, homeowners can document this information in a notebook or on their smartphones. Do so for a long enough period of time that you can get an accurate of idea of the conditions in which plants will have to grow, and then take that information with you to the garden center where you will buy plants. Employees can then use this info to help customers find the right fit given the light conditions. : Water availability, both quantity and quality, as well as ease of access. : Exposure to wind and temperature extremes. : Exposure to weather events, snow loads, erosion, and flooding: Garden center employees can likely recommend plants based on traditional weather patterns in a given area. : Soil type, drainage and compaction: Homeowners can take note of any areas of their property where water pools or the ground feels especially soggy after rainfall. Share this information with garden center employees prior to picking plants for such areas. If soil appears compacted, aeration prior to planting may be necessary. : Competition from existing vegetation, keeping in mind the roots underground that you can’t see. : Above ground wires or obstructions: Trees will grow up, and the presence of power lines or other obstructions may threaten the trees or prove dangerous if trees eventually grow into or hang over power lines. 8 | HOME+GARDEN S pring marks the return of lawn and garden season. Lawns often bear the brunt of winter’s wrath, so spring is a great time to nurse them back to health, and fertilizing can be an essential component of that process. Fertilizing a lawn can be intimidating. An array of fertilizers, each seemingly designed to address a different issue, can make homeowners’ heads spin when visiting their local lawn and garden center. However, fertilizing is a very simple task that any homeowner can tackle. In fact, fears about fertilizing are often unfounded and can be overcome with some basic knowledge of the process. : Identify which type of grass is in the yard. The home improvement experts at HGTV note that turfgrass is divided into two categories: cool-season grass and warm-season grass. A local lawn and garden center can help homeowners identify which type of grass is in the yard, and this often depends on location. Fescue, bluegrass and perennial ryegrass are some examples of cool-season grasses, while Bermuda, bahia, St. Augustine, and zoysia are considered warm-season grasses. Identifying which type of grass is in the lawn is important because that will indicate when to fertilize. Cool-season grasses are typically best fertilized in early spring, while warm-season lawns can benefit from an application just before especially warm temperatures arrive. : Survey the lawn to identify which The Basics of Lawn Fertilizing spreader to use. A small yard or a thriving lawn with only a few bald or unsightly patches may not need a full application of fertilizer. In such instances, a hand spreader can suffice. For larger lawns and areas, a broadcast spreader is the ideal option. Spreaders have multiple settings, and the fertilizer package will indicate which setting to utilize when using the product. : Test the soil prior to purchasing fertilizer. The lawn experts at Pennington note that a simple soil test can reveal soil pH and phosphorous and potassium levels. Soil tests can be purchased at most home improvement stores and lawn and garden centers, and can help homeowners determine which fertilizer will most benefit their lawns. : Water the lawn prior to fertilizing. The experts at Scotts recommend a good watering a few days prior to fertilizing a lawn. Such an approach ensures the soil is ready to accept the fertilizer once it’s applied. : Follow the instructions carefully. Detailed instructions are typically provided on fertilizer product packaging. Once homeowners have identified and purchased the product they need, they can simply follow the instructions on the packaging, including how and when to water after application, which can make fertilizing less intimidating. Fertilizing in spring can help a lawn recover from the previous summer and winter, ensuring it’s lush and green when summer entertaining season arrives. H+G

10 | HOME+GARDEN A focus on the exterior can be a promising and rewarding way to direct renovation dollars. Curb appeal has a significant impact on how a home is viewed. Manicured landscapes, updated windows and doors and well-lit landscapes can improve the value of a home and ensure it sells quickly and above market rate. When homeowners assess items they may want to change, shutters can be an area of consideration. Shutters can help windows look a little less plain. In most modern residential properties, shutters are purely decorative. However, their roots lie in home protection. Originally, shutters were used in lieu of windows so they were the only way to safeguard a home’s interior from the elements. Give Homes a New Look With These Shutter Styles Some shutters still offer that protection, but those typically are installed on homes in hurricane-prone areas. Window shutters lend a finished and distinctive look to a home. When shopping for shutters, individuals can choose among various styles. : Louvered. A louvered shutter features several wood slats that overlap each other on the same frame. A typical louvered shutter features two sets of slats separated by a center rail. Some functional louvered shutters are operational, meaning the slats can be tilted to allow air to flow through. But this is something typically reserved for indoor shutters. Decorative ones have fixed slats. : Panel. Panel shutters come in different styles. Raised panel shutters present a boxed design where rectangular features will stand out from the rest of the frame. Flat panel shutters (sometimes referred to as shaker) have the boxed design, but those rectangles are not raised. Recessed panels are the opposite of raised panels. As their name suggests, recessed panels are set back from the rest of the frame. : Board and batten. Board and batten shutters are formed from grouped single boards joined together with shorter crosspieces of wood called battens. Battens are positioned horizontally or at an angle. These shutters have a more informal, rural feel. : Bahama/Bermuda These tropical-inspired shutters are of the louvered variety, but they’re installed from the top of the window rather than on the sides. : Scandinavian. Scandinavian series shutters are very decorative board and batten shutters. They feature a series of cutouts and designs. : Combination Some shutters offer the best of both worlds, with louvered on top and a solid panel on the bottom, or vice versa. This gives homeowners infinite options. Shutters are available in various materials. The most common include wood, vinyl and composite. Cedar, mahogany and pine are commonly used woods for exterior shutters. Vinyl is more economical and lightweight, but can be challenging to clean and do not offer the longevity of other materials. Composite shutters are durable and cost less than wood in most cases. Shutters can stand out or blend in with the siding and other architectural accents. Shutters also can flank a front door to fully complete an exterior look. H+G

12 | HOME+GARDEN Spring is a season of rejuvenation, and perhaps nowhere is that rebirth more noticeable than in the yard. Each spring, grass begins to grow again as inviting landscapes beckon people outdoors. Extra sunlight and rising temperatures make spring a great time to plant flowers, grasses and trees. To ensure successful planting, homeowners must take steps to prepare the soil. Healthy soil can provide the ideal conditions for roots to take hold, helping plants establish themselves before potentially harsh summer conditions arrive. Preparing soil might seem like an extensive job, but a simple approach may be all that’s necessary to create conditions that promote plant growth this spring. : Clean up the mess. Whether homeowners live in regions marked by yearround warmth or places where winter typically features heavy snowfall, it’s a good idea to clean up an area prior to spring planting. Fallen leaves, rocks, grass clippings, and other debris can contribute to compacted soil that makes it hard for plants to establish healthy root systems. Clear away any debris prior to planting before taking the next step in the soil preparation routine. How to Prepare Soil for Spring Planting : Loosen the soil. Once debris has been cleared away, loosen the soil. Depending on the size of the area where plants will go, property owner may need to invest in tools like a shovel, spade, spading fork, and/or a lawn edger. If you’re planting in a small area, such as a deck planter box that still has soil from last year’s planting inside it, you can either clean the box and replace the soil entirely or dig around with a handheld trowel, cultivator and/or weeder. It’s important to loosen all of the soil around where plants will ultimately go prior to planting to ensure water can reach the roots and help them establish themselves once planting is completed. : Test and amend the soil. A simple pH test can help determine the acidity or alkalinity of the soil. This is an important step as soil that is too acidic or alkaline can decrease the availability of nutrients the plants will need to thrive. In addition to conducting a pH test, homeowners can contact their local Cooperative Extension Service to test their soil quality. These tests will reveal soil pH, but also can shed light on the texture of the soil and other components. Once the test is conducted, the local Coop Extension Service may recommend amendments to improve the nutritional quality of the soil so new plants can thrive. H+G

14 | HOME+GARDEN Home interiors can be spruced up in a number of ways. Ideas run the gamut from relatively inexpensive changes in paint color to more extensive (and expensive) remodels that may include demolition and reconstruction. Investing in new home decor is another way to breathe new life into spaces, and this approach falls somewhere in the middle in regard to cost. Material and product costs remain high across the board, so individuals interested in changing the furniture and other design elements in their homes might be seeking ways to do so in the most affordable way possible. In such instances, homeowners can try these budget-friendly ways to overhaul their home decor. Tips For Budget-friendly Home Decor Create the illusion of more space. Light, bright and white are key attributes to remember when selecting design elements for rooms where homeowners want to create the illusion of more square footage. Painting the walls in very light colors, increasing natural and artificial light, including using wellplaced mirrors to reflect light, and decorating with light-colored fabrics can help a space seem more roomy. Replace the accessories. Replacing curtains, area rugs, throw pillows, and chair cushions is an easy way to change a room without a big investment. Consider updating some wall art and tying color schemes together with all of the newly introduced elements. Splurge on statement pieces that will be used frequently. These may include chandeliers, unique rugs or an eye-catching piece of furniture. Shop ‘discount’ stores for furniture and accents. Traditional design centers can be great places to find plenty of high-quality merchandise. However, don’t overlook local discount or closeout centers that may have items at very reasonable costs. Stores like Home Goods, At Home and Big Lots routinely get new merchandise that changes with the season, helping homeowners to refresh their spaces without having to dig deep into their pockets. Shop the highend stores for inspiration, then try to find “dupes” in the discount stores that will mimic the looks for less. Cut out the clutter. Modern homes are lean and clean. A home’s interior instantly looks more high-end and appealing when the clutter is removed. Consider keeping main living areas free from too many knickknacks and other accents. To display a special collection, set aside a room specifically for such items. VERY PERI IS THE PANTONE 2022 COLOR OF THE YEAR. VERY PERI REKINDLES SOME OF THE QUALITIES THE COLOR BLUE REPRESENTS WHILE SIMULTANEOUSLY COMPLEMENTING A MODERN LOOK. H+G

16 | HOME+GARDEN Homeowners enjoy gardening for many different reasons. In addition to adding beauty to a property, gardens can offset grocery costs by yielding tasty produce. They also offer important habitats and food sources for both insects 6 Ways to Make Your Garden More Successful and animals. While growing a vegetable or flower garden can turn into a rewarding hobby, or even a passion, gardening also can be overwhelming - particularly when the results are less than stellar. Novice gardeners have scores of resources at their disposal, including the advice of gardeners who have made mistakes and learned from them. The following guidance can make home gardens that much more successful. 1. Start small. Homeowners may have visions of an expansive garden growing rows of crops or acres of flowers. But it is smart to start small and build on what they find sucContinued on page 18 H+G

18 | HOME+GARDEN cessful, which includes plants that thrive in their lawn and garden. This also is beneficial if you are unsure of vegetable yields. Several blooming plants producing bushels of crops can be overwhelming, especially if they will not be harvested or cooked in a timely fashion. 2. Assess the soil. Plants need nutrient-rich soil to encourage extensive root systems and produce strong, hardy plants, according to the gardening resource GrowVeg. Nourish soil with organic matter, such as manure, compost, shredded leaves, and natural mulch. Add this organic matter in the off-season to give it enough time to be incorporated into the ground before spring. Soil tested for pH and other characteristics that make it friendly or averse to plants at a local garden center. 3. Arm yourself with knowledge. Be aware of the sunlight needs of certain flowers or plants? If not, read the packaging and do your research so your plants have the best chance of not only sprouting, but also surviving. Many people prefer to start seedlings indoors in late winter and then transfer those plants outdoors when they are stronger and more established. 4. Sit in the yard and observe. Watch the way the sunlight dances over areas of the landscape, and take note of which areas get the most sun and shade. Vegetable gardens tend to need ample sunlight to bear pick-worthy produce. Property owners can give plants a leg up by growing them in optimal conditions. 5. Choose hardy varieties. Certain plants have been bred to thrive in particular climate, including heat-tolerant plants for climates with sweltering summer sun. Consumers should consult with a local gardening center to figure out which plant zone they’re in and which plants will do best within that zone. 6. Use rainwater. Rainwater contains fewer contaminants and additives than tap water, which can benefit garden plants. Collect rainwater in rain barrels and use irrigation systems to deliver it to the garden. CONSULT WITH A LOCAL GARDENING CENTER TO FIGURE OUT WHICH PLANT ZONE YOU ARE IN AND WHICH PLANTS WILL DO BEST WITHIN THAT ZONE. H+G

22 | HOME+GARDEN C ertain homes have an undeniable wow factor. That instant appeal tends to be noticeable the moment visitors pull up to the curb, and it might be a byproduct of homeowners’ willingness to embrace the latest design trends. Trends come and go, but recognition of the current fashions can help homeowners create that highly sought-after wow Popular Trends in Home Exteriors factor. The following are some recent trends in home exteriors that have helped homeowners set their properties apart. Wood Natural wood has undeniable appeal, and it hasn’t only found newfound devotion among home interior decorators. Natural wood garage doors create a sense of warmth and can set a home apart from others with steel doors, which tend to be the most popular garage door material. In addition to the garage door, natural wood entry doors and wood decks are popular ways to impart this classical, warm look to a home’s exterior. Painted brick Like natural wood, brick is a traditional material that’s both sturdy and classical. But homeowners can add character to brick with a coat of paint, which has become a popular trend in recent years. Light tones tend to be most popular when painting bricks. The experts at Better Homes & Gardens note that this could prove a long-term commitment if homeowners so desire, as a properly painted brick exterior could last as long as 20 years. Hardscaping Hardscaping isn’t a new trend, but it has been trending in recent years. Hardscaping is an umbrella term that includes everything from outdoor living rooms to incorporating natural stone into a landscape. Outdoor living rooms are one hardscaping trend that has become increasingly popular of late. These spaces serve as an extension of indoor living spaces. The home improvement experts at HGTV note that recently homeowners have looked to create covered outdoor rooms that can be enjoyed more frequently than patios or decks that are not protected from the elements. Outdoor lighting It makes sense that individuals looking to spend more time enjoying their properties outdoors would want more lighting outside. Ambient outdoor lighting can be utilized throughout a property. Such lighting can illuminate walkways and driveways and be used to light up landscaping features like trees, gardens, and driveways. 24 | HOME+GARDEN Agrand entryway simply wouldn’t be complete without an impressive front door. A front door can dazzle guests and create a homeowner’s desired vibe before anyone even steps inside, which only underscores how important the choice of door style can be. When shopping around for a new front The Many Styles of Front Doors door for their homes, property owners can consider the many popular styles as they seek to choose one that fits an existing scheme or use a new front door as a springboard to a redesigned home. : Farmhouse Farmhouse doors are not all one and the same. Traditional farmhouse doors provide a rustic look that’s become popular in home decor over the last decade or so. Modern farmhouse doors are a little less rustic because they incorporate more contemporary elements into their design. Each option is ideal for homeowners who aspire to create a farmhouse vibe in their home interiors and exteriors. : Modern. Modern front doors tend to boast a bold look and many are made up of large glass panels. Some homeowners prefer modern front doors because the glass in them allows lots of natural light into their home’s interior. The added light in the entryway appeals to homeowners who want to brighten up these spaces, which tend to be dark in homes with more traditional doors. : Traditional. Traditional front doors may be the most recognizable to today’s homeowners. Often solid wood but sometimes enhanced with glass, traditional doors may feature subtle, yet ornate designs. Traditional front doors might feel out of place in modern or rustic homes, so they’re generally best suited to homes with owners that prefer more traditional decor inside their homes. : Custom. It’s important that homeowners recognize they need not pigeonhole themselves into a particular design style for their front doors. Custom front doors may be costly, but many door manufacturers or contractors customize front doors. Custom doors may suit homeowners with unique ideas about decor, and some can even mimic other popular styles while still featuring subtle differences. For example, homeowners can request an arched double door that, while unique, features many of the same qualities that characterize traditional doors, including ornate designs. H+G

26 | HOME+GARDEN T he typical cost of a kitchen remodel is between $13,000 and $38,000. Angi.com estimates even indicate that a high-end remodel could cost homeowners as much as $61,000. But the good news is that there are many quick and easy, not to mention less expensive, ways to give a kitchen a new look. Repaint and restyle the cabinets. A full cabinet replacement is unnecessary Quick Ways to Give the Kitchen a New Look if the cabinets are still functional and not overcrowded, so repainting them can be a great way to give the kitchen a new look while keeping costs reasonable. Homeowners can install new cabinet knobs and/or drawer pulls to freshen up the style of the cabinets. Install under-cabinet lighting. From a purely aesthetic standpoint, under-cabinet lighting can make a kitchen feel more warm and keep the kitchen illuminated when meals aren’t being prepared and you don’t want to have lights on but still want to be able to navigate the kitchen. During meal prep, under-cabinet lighting can illuminate counters so it’s easier to chop and peel. Replace existing backsplash. Homeowners can opt for something neutral that won’t upset their existing decor or go with a more bold backsplash that immediately draws the attention of anyone who enters the room. This simple job can be done by the average do-it-yourselfer and the cost won’t break the bank. Replace existing seating. Countertop bar stools come in many styles, so giving this area of the kitchen a new feel can be as simple as shifting from classic, highback stools to more modern swivel stools with a chrome base. For the breakfast nook, replacing a light-colored bench cushion with a bolder alternative can instantly transform a look. FriendshipCreek.McKeeBuilders.com | 302-330-2482 JUMPRIGHT IN! 28 | HOME+GARDEN Pick ing the Right Plants Veteran gardeners may know their landscapes well and be able to pick the right plants on their own. Novices may need a little help as they look to give their landscapes a whole new look. can provide that without compromising surrounding vegetation. : Consider maintenance prior to planting. Newly planted trees may require substantial watering until they’ve fully established their roots, and some homeowners may not have time for that. In addition, certain plants may require a considerable amount of pruning in order to create and maintain the look homeowners desire. Individuals must be willing to invest the time and effort necessary to maintain new plantings that require such diligence. : Consider local wildlife. Those who routinely see deer lounging around in their backyard, look for deer-resistant plants. This is a good way to protect their investment of both time and money and ensure minimal wildlife traffic through a newly landscaped yard. The following are some helpful tips to help homeowners pick the right plants for their landscapes. : Conduct a site evaluation. A number of factors must be evaluated, including light availability; water availability; exposure to the elements, including wind and extreme temperatures; and competition from existing vegetation, among other things. Take note of the area you plan to plant to see if it is full sun or partial shade, and then pick plants whose growing conditions align with those you observe. : Look at more than looks. 32 | HOME+GARDEN DID YOU KNOW? According to the World Health Organization, standing water is a breeding ground for mosquitoes, which can breed in great numbers in pools of water. Mosquitoes are known to carry diseases like malaria, West Nile virus and Zika. Furthermore, mosquitoes that bite pets can transmit heartworms, a serious problem if it goes undiscovered. Standing water also can be a haven for bacteria, mold and parasites that are dangerous to human health. If standing, stagnant water is a problem in your yard, remediation is necessary. Directing downspouts away from the house can reduce standing water. Changing the grading of soil so low spots are elevated is another way to reduce instances of standing water. This may be a project that requires the assistance of a drainage professional. In addition, homeowners can remove standing water from empty flower pots, pool covers, bird baths, and more to reduce the likelihood that mosquitoes will appear on their properties. ferrishomeimprovements.com TWO LOCATIONS 302-998-4500 NEWARK 302-260-5200 REHOBOTH ROOFING WINDOWS & DOORS KITCHENS & BATHS SIDING DECKS GUTTERS SMALL EXTERIOR REPAIRS H+G

Though plants might not seem like the first thing individuals think of when they ponder long-term investments, perennials can be just that. The home and garden experts at HGTV note that some perennials can live for a very long time. For example, according to HGTV, the colorful flowering plant peony, despite a blooming season that usually lasts just seven to 10 days, has been known to survive for 70 to 100 years. Hostas are another popular perennial because they require little maintenance, and that extra free time can add up over the course of the hosta’s life, which can exceed 15 years. Long-living perennials are not necessarily unusual, but gardeners should know that many perennials, and particularly those characterized as “short-lived,” tend to live around three years.

36 | HOME+GARDEN Behind the Scenes with Patio Systems When Chris Burns committed to taking over as Operations Manager of Patio Systems in late July of 2022, it was like many business ventures, a calculated risk — one that would be met with many challenges. Reshaping a local business that’s been around for more than two decades is no easy task. But he brought with him a long history of solid leadership experience and like all great leaders – a vision. What is Patio Systems in a nutshell? We’re a company built around enhancing people’s outdoor living spaces. We’re really lion of construction — built a barn, an operating dairy farm, all the cottages and apartments, a community center with indoor pool and conference center. When did you officially take over Patio Systems and what made you decide to step into this role? I came as production manager in 2021 and we’ve built a phenomenal team here but I wanted to see the company grow and be built around the excellent workers that we brought. Before, everything was focused around sales. But I wanted focused on the customer and helping them determine how to bring their desire to life. A lot of time, people have an idea, they have a want, but they don’t know how to translate that into something practical that’ll meet their needs. We’re a provider that can make that a reality for them. What’s your backstory? And how did you get into this line of work? I ran a restoration company for five years and restored buildings with fire and water damage. I was operations manager for a retirement community so about $7.5 milSPONSORED CONTENT

HOME+GARDEN | 37 to turn the focus to excellence. I’ve also coached high school and college sports on and off from 1995 through 2018, so over the years I’ve learned that excellence wins championships. After eight months as OM, what has surprised you most? I don’t know that anything surprised me, I’d say the biggest challenge has been the change in the economy. Trying to deal with that and navigate those challenges has been interesting. Your company motto is “Nothing in this world is perfect, but here at Patio Systems, Inc. we believe in operating with integrity.” What does integrity mean to you? And how do you hold your crews to this standard? We talk all the time about just doing the right thing and the rest will take care of itself. We do that everyday. And whether it’s a new customer or an existing customer, sometimes it means saying I’m sorry. It means constantly trying to get better. You have to be able to admit where you’re weak, and we have weaknesses. But you can’t settle and say we are weak and not try to correct it. Integrity is admitting when you fail and owning it and going back and correcting it. You frequently talk about the level of craftsmanship that a Patio Systems project comes with. Can you say a bit about that and how it sets you apart? Having been a custom builder from Lancaster County, and been in building for a long time, I can say that the quality of workmanship and the team we’ve built would fit anywhere in the country. Many days, when I leave to go home, my guys are still at the work site because they won’t leave a job until it’s done right. And I’d rather them spend extra time and do it well, then leave a job to meet a timeline. It shows their level of commitment to excellence. Can you talk about your vision for 2023 and beyond? Right now, our focus has been primarily on awnings and sunrooms, but there is a real need in this area for more modern pergolas. There are a lot of traditional pergolas but not a lot of modern styles like the ones we are incorporating, even this summer, that includes more modern look with side shades and blinds, lighting, heat, articulating tops that close when it’s raining and open when it’s nice out. And the other thing is exotic wood decks. Everything around here is composite except on the finest of homes. But we want to incorporate a line of exotic decks that bring a real natural exquisite look to a home. Speaking about vision, we hear you’re in the middle of a rebrand. Can you tell us what customers can expect to see? We’ve got a long tradition with the area. But I think, with that — I’ll just say this. I used to teach search and rescue in the Coast Guard. And you would go on a ship and blindfold the crew and walk them through the halls and ask them where the fire extinguishers were that they walked by every day. And they would forget where they were. People have become so accustomed to seeing us here for 21 years, so it’s important for us to tell a new story. What is the most common question you get asked by potential customers? And what’s the answer? How long do we have to wait? And until recently, the answer was 10-12 months. Just in the last week or so, we’ve been able to reevaluate that and decrease it to 8-10 months, which still seems like a long time. But it’s a long time because we are good at what we do. And you can get rooms quicker at some other places. But I don’t feel the need to apologize for our wait times because it’s worth the wait. And the customers who’ve waited will tell you the same thing. Patio Systems is located at 16083 New Rd, Lewes. Learn more at patiosystems.com

38 | HOME+GARDEN T here is some debate regarding where the practice of “spring cleaning” originated. Some researchers link it to certain religious groups. It has long been an ancient Jewish custom to thoroughly clean a house in preparation for the springtime feast of Passover. Similarly, members of the Greek Orthodox church celebrate “Clean Week,” which is a week of cleaning before Lent. In Iranian culture, families spend days cleaning prior to the Persian New Year, which begins on the spring equinox. As people embark on their plans to tidy up, these tips can help them along. : Tackle one big task a day. Who hasn’t started one project only to be distracted into moving along to another room? This often occurs when people discover something out of place in one Spring Cleaning Pointers space and then move that item where it belongs, only to find a new cleaning task at hand in that space. Inefficiency can make homeowners give up on spring cleaning prematurely. Agree to address one room task a day. Keep a basket or box handy to store errant items until it’s time to move on to the next room. : Stock up on supplies. Prepare all of the cleaning supplies in advance. Put together a tool kit of sorts with the equipment needed, including mops, brooms, rags, cleansers, and the like. Organization can keep everyone on course. : Harness strengths. Some people clean because they are stressed or angry others do so to avoid other tasks. Keep personality in mind when establishing a cleaning schedule. For example, clean at night if like to stay up late. Others may want to wait until you are feeling antsy before embarking on a “calm down cleaning.” : Tackle seasonal chores first. Some tasks need to get done to prepare for the spring and summer season. These may include cleaning the grill and sorting through outdoor furniture and decor. Spring cleaning may involve readying the pool for another year of use, or cleaning out rain gutters to prepare for spring storms. Tackle time-dependent tasks first and then move on to others that are less time-sensitive. : Spread out the work. Some people like to devote full weekends to spring cleaning, but that can be overwhelming for others. Breaking down cleaning tasks into 15- to 30-minute intervals each day can make the job more tolerable. H+G

be “adult kiddie pools” when combined with some plumbing. Galvanized steel frames make them sturdy. With floats and other accessories, they can become the perfect oasis. : Create living privacy. Living in close proximity to neighbors may make privacy harder to come by. Wood or vinyl fences, however effective, may not provide the all-natural look many people desire. Vertical gardening, which trains easy-care vines like English ivy, Clematis or various climbing roses to grow on trellis or fencing, adds greenery and privacy. Hedges and fast-growing shrubs also can be used for natural barriers. : Provide outdoor atmosphere. Create a bespoke bistro vibe by using freestanding planters and posts along with hanging lights to make an intimate outdoor hangout spot at night. For those with permanent structures, like a deck or a gazebo, lights can be strung across the area or on railings or edging. : Extend the living space. Decks and patios can help make outdoor entertaining areas more comfortable by eliminating the need to sit on the grass or gravel. Plus, they add another “room” to the home. When paired with weatherproof patio furniture, such as sofas, loungers and tables, a private seating area can be crafted and utilized for any number of entertaining desires. : Hang a hammock. Few things evoke feelings of relaxation better than a hammock. Fitted between two trees (or two posts if trees are sparse), a hammock is an ideal place to grab a nap or read a book. tional respites right outside their doors. A backyard renovation can cost anywhere from $5,000 to $50,000. The American Society of Landscape Architects suggests homeowners budget the cost of a major landscaping project at between 5 and 10 percent of their home’s value. Large or small, here are ways to make an outdoor oasis at home. : Install a pool. Pools are the ultimate spots to cool off. An elaborately shaped inground pool can blend in with the landscape and offer the ultimate hangout zone. However, above-ground pools also serve the purpose and are more budget-friendly. Stock tank pools are popular among those who want minimal pool expenditure or have small spaces to work with. Stock tanks are metal vessels traditionally used as watering holes for livestock. They also can

44 | HOME+GARDEN Landscaping Done Right : Plant shade trees. A lush green lawn appeals to buyers and gives the impression the home has been well maintained. In addition, shade trees can be used to create the look of a backyard oasis. A well-placed bench beneath a large shade tree can entice buyers who want a relaxing spot to enjoy the outdoors without getting a sunburn. : Mulch flower and tree beds. Freshly mulched beds beneath trees and flowers creates a clean and organized look, and the mulch also serves a practical purpose, as it reduces weed growth and helps the soil retain moisture so plants stay healthy and look better throughout the warmer months when rainfall may not be as steady. : Dress up the walkway. Create new planting beds and plant bright plants and flowers along each side of the walkway. If it’s necessary and within budget, lengthen the walkway to create the feel of a more grandiose entryway. : Make things more symmetrical. A messy landscape can give a poor first impression, even if the area features some beautiful plants. In such instances, a little effort to make things more symmetrical, with equal parts grass and vegetation, can create a cleaner look. : Consider maintenance. Lawn enthusiasts may not be turned off by landscapes that require steady maintenance. A poorly maintained landscape, even if it includes exotic plants and elaborate designs, will adversely affect curb appeal. Another feather in the cap of low-maintenance landscape features is they could prove more appealing to buyers, who may view elaborate landscaping as a lot of extra work. It’s Spring! Get Gardening! How to Prevent Mosquitoes From Ruining Your Summer Fun finely tuned receptors to hone in on their prey. You won’t even hear them coming. If there is some buzzing, that’s from the male mosquitos, and they don’t bite. The female isn’t drinking your blood for her nutritional benefit, she’s consuming it to nurture the 100 to 200 eggs that she will lay within the next five days. Under typical conditions, a day or two after that you’ll have a whole new batch of pests invading your space. Meanwhile, the female is off to lay more eggs, which she will do as many as three times in her life span. The math quickly gets overwhelming as the eggs hatch and start the cycle all over again. HOME+GARDEN | 47 few minutes of spraying for a typical-sized yard with our proprietary blend of mostly natural oils. You might detect just a hint of garlic immediately after the spraying, but otherwise, you won’t notice a difference. The mosquitoes will, however. They will stay away. Throughout the summer, we come as often as needed to maintain that barrier against mosquitoes. Rather than setting you up with a rigid schedule, we watch the weather. Why? Because the weather dictates the life cycle of the mosquito. We like to say, we go by a mosquito schedule rather than a calendar. The female mosquito lays eggs in wet areas and standing water. The baby mosquitoes thrive on microscopic organisms as they grow large enough to become a nuisance. It will take just a few days before they’re ready to head off in search of a blood source. When we treat your yard we focus on the areas we know mosquitoes like to hang out. That’s places like under the porch, behind the gutters, or even flower pots that don’t quickly drain. We typically start in the spring as the mosquitoes start moving. That happens when nighttime temperatures are above 50 degrees. The best time for the first treatment depends on the area of the country. If you haven’t started thinking about mosquito control now is the time. The key is to maintain the barrier so you can use your yard without being bothered by mosquitoes for the rest of the season. We’ll keep going until the temperatures fall below 50 degrees at night. As with the first spray, the last will depend on your location. It’s essentially a set-it-and-forget-it mosquito control service for homeowners, but not for Mosquito Shield. We closely monitor the conditions and make sure we’re working around the heat and storms to ensure that you have a space you can enjoy all season long. According to the Arbor Day Foundation, the following are some popular shade trees that can add beauty and make it more comfortable. : Quaking aspen The quaking aspen has the widest natural range of any tree in North America, spanning 47 degrees of latitude, 110 degrees of longitude (nine time zones) and elevations from sea level to timberline. That impressive range is no doubt why the United States Forest Service notes that the quaking aspen can grow in greatly diverse regions, environments and communities. Shady Comfort : Northern catalpa The Arbor Day Foundation notes that the northern catalpa is easily identifiable thanks to its heart-shaped leaves and twisting trunks and branches. Nature enthusiasts, and particularly those who enjoy birdwatching, may be happy to learn that the flowers are visited by hummingbirds. : Red sunset maple Its name alone makes many people think of lazy summer days spent lounging in the yard. The red sunset maple provides ample shade and comes with the added benefit of producing an awe-inspiring blend of red and orange leaves come the fall. Red sunset maples can survive in a range of habitats and their adaptable roots means they can thrive in various soil types. : Northern red oak The state tree of New Jersey, the northern red oak is, according to the Arbor Day Foundation, both beloved for its aesthetic appeal and valued for its adaptability and usefulness. : Sawtooth oak Another tree that produces some awe-inspiring color, the sawtooth oak is a durable, adaptable shade tree. Golden yellow leaves in the spring will give way to dark green in summer, only to turn yellow and golden brown in the fall. The sawtooth oak can thrive in warmer climates where shade trees that can coexist with high temperatures can be hard to find.
