swing.

It is difficult to think of
Christmas without envision-
ing everything awash in these
popular colors, broken up only
by the inclusion of gold, white
or silver accents.

The colors of Christmas are
often taken for granted, and
many celebrants are unaware of
how these colors became sym-
bols of the holiday season and
why they remain so to this day.

Several theories exist as to
why red and green became the
hallmarks of Christmas. One
such theory is that the colors
evolved from pagan celebra-
tions similar to the evolution
of Christmas traditions. Prior
to the arrival of Christianity,
many cultures viewed the color
green as the symbol of life . It
is believed that, during harsh
winters, evergreen trees were
cut down and brought indoors
to symbolize that life still exists
and thrives despite the cold and
darkness of winter. Other pagan
holidays featured the use of
green, red and gold, including
the festival of Yule.

As Christianity spread across
Europe and other parts of the
world, red and green were
linked to Jesus Christ. Green
still represented life, but now
this was the eternal life of-
fered by Christ. Red was said

fruit-bearing apple tree in the winter,

Bishops also wore red robes, further

their Christmas trees as they transport

Wrap the tree in a plastic wrap so it

the holiday season.

• Cut pre-cut trees before leav-

it through the holiday season looking
their best, but buyers should request
that employees cut as much as two
inches off the bottom of the tree be-
fore leaving the lot.

Once trees are cut, sap begins to seal
their base, making it hard for them to
absorb water.

By requesting that between one and
two inches be removed from the bot-
tom of the tree at the time of purchase,
buyers are ensuring their trees will be
able to absorb the water they’ll need to

Wrap your
holiday guests
in comfort

The time between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Guests are a large part of the holiday season. Help them feel comfortable
Day marks one of the busiest periods of the year for whenever they visit your home.
long-distance travel. The United States Department
of Transportation says that come Thanksgiving,
the number of long-distance trips (50+ miles away)
increases by 54 percent, and around Christmas that
number rises by 23 percent over the remainder of
the year. Those travelers ultimately need a place
to rest their heads, and many stay with family and
friends. Entertaining during the holiday season in-
volves accounting for guests’ comfort, and that often
means hosts must put their visitors’ needs over their
own. Although some sacrifices need to be made,
there is a way to find a happy compromise that can
help the holidays go smoothly and happily. Consider
these ways to help guests feel welcome whether they
stay for a few hours or a few days.

• Cater to specific dietary needs. One of the
ways to treat guests kindly is by being aware of any
special dietary needs they may have when it comes
to preparing holiday meals or other foods during
their visits. Some guests may require low-sodium
diets, while others may be monitoring their blood-
sugar levels and must dine accordingly. Vegetarians
and vegans limit the foods they eat, while others may
avoid foods based on religious preferences. Offer a
variety and try to cater to guests’ needs as much as
possible. When in doubt, consult with the guest so
he or she feels welcome and does not go hungry.

• Make sleeping spaces as private as pos-
sible. Not everyone has a separate guest room for
overnight stays, but try to make sleeping areas as pri-
vate as you can when visitors spend the night. Use
privacy screens or set guests up in a family room
that’s away from activity. Hosts may want to give up
their own rooms for the comfort of guests.

• Offer storage space. One way to make guests
feel comfortable is to give them their own storage
space. This can include space in a closet, a couple of
drawers to stow their belongings, or hangers in the
entryway for coats and other winter attire. Not only
will this keep things more organized, it can provide
guests with comfort.

4. Include guests when preparing for enter-
taining. Many guests like to feel involved, and by
including them in meal preparation, decorating or
shopping, you can help them feel included and ap-
preciated.

Chanukah, which roughly translates
to “dedication” or “induction,” is a
Jewish holiday celebrated each year in
November and/or December, depend-

it may not hold the same level of
spiritual significance as some other
holidays of the religion, Chanukah is a
highly anticipated and popular holiday
among people who practice Judaism.

Two miracles are celebrated on
Chanukah. One of them is a victory by
a small number of Jews known as the
Maccabees, who defeated the Greek
army occupying the Holy Land. The
other miracle occurred when the Mac-
cabees liberated their Temple from the
Greeks. They only discovered a single
night’s worth of oil to light the meno-
rah. However, that oil managed to burn
for eight days and nights.

Sleigh bells ring Sleigh bells ringing
Are you listening Are you listening

Snow is glistening Snow is glistening
A beautiful sight, A beautiful sight,
We’re happy tonight We’re happy tonight
Walking in a winter wonderland Walking in a winter wonderland

Gone away, is the blue bird Gone away, is the blue bird
Here to stay, is the new bird Here to stay, is the new bird
He sings a love song, He sings a love a song
As we go along As we go along
Walking in a winter wonderland Walking in a winter wonderland

In the meadow In the meadow
we can build a snowman we can build a snowman
And pretend that he is Parson Brown
He’ll say are you married And pretend that he’s a circus clown
We’ll say no man
But you can do the job We’ll have lots of fun
When you’re in town with Mr. Snowman

Until the other kiddies
knock them down

Later on When it snows
We’ll conspire Ain’t it thrilling
As we dream by the fire Though your nose, gets a chilling
To face unafraid We’ll frolic and play, the Eskimo way
The plans that we’ve made Walking in a winter wonderland
