8 | MED MATTERS 2024 MED MATTERS 2024 The state of our health I t was assumed as Covid-era protocols were lifted that Sussex County residents would find the availability and wait times for local healthcare return to normal. Unfortunately, the continued explosive growth and aging population within the county has changed the formula. While the expansion of our three local hospital systems proceeds at a rapid pace, the demand is still piling up faster than the supply. It’s not due to a lack of effort, as noted in Ron MacArthur’s Feb. 16 Cape Gazette column, “For the first time since data was collected, healthcare workers became the No. ❯❯ LOCAL HEALTH 1 job category in Sussex County, surpassing jobs in the tourism and service industries.” Despite this figure, getting a doctor's appointment or finding a specialist with availability still remains a struggle for many. The 2024 Cape Gazette local healthcare survey revealed that 80% of our readers do not believe that the local healthcare systems are adequately staffed with doctors and nurses. The staffing struggle is a driving force behind the frustration. When asked if they were pleased with the healthcare options available in Sussex County, only 34% of our 2024 survey respondents said, "yes". This figure is down 20% from the 2023 survey when 54% of respondents said, "yes".  In this edition of Med Matters, we will share all the 2024 survey results and take a look at the Blue Zone initiative which could potentially provide relief by bringing together healthcare providers, government and other agencies to promote healthier lifestyles in the Cape Region and beyond. By nurturing your gut through a balanced diet, probiotics and stress management, you can support your digestive health and your body’s ability to fend off illness. Remember that a healthy gut isn’t just about digestion — it’s about strengthening your body’s first line of defense against infections and maintaining vibrant health from the inside out. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) cite research saying the bacteria in your gut reduces your risk of diabetes, inflammatory bowel disease and psoriatic arthritis. Nurture Your Gut Your gut health is intricately linked to your overall well-being, affecting everything from digestion to immune function and even your mood. Gut Health Connection Your gastrointestinal (GI) tract, often referred to as your gut, is a complex system responsible for digesting food, absorbing nutrients and playing a crucial role in your immune response. It serves three primary roles: digestion, absorption and providing a microbiome. Your gut breaks down the food you eat into essential nutrients that nourish your body. Nutrients from digested food are absorbed into the bloodstream through the gut lining. The GI tract hosts trillions of microorganisms collectively known as the gut microbiome. These microbes aid digestion, synthesize vitamins and even influence your mood. Healthline explains each person has Continued on page 14 Ready to be a LOCAL? We make it easy. Thinking of Relocating? Tips for a Healthy Gut Consume a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins. A diverse diet supports a diverse gut microbiome and a robust immune system. Fiber promotes regular bowel movements and feeds beneficial gut bacteria. Incorporate food like oats, beans and broccoli. Probiotics are live bacteria and yeasts found in yogurt, kefir and fermented foods like sauerkraut. They help maintain a balanced gut microbiome. Also helpful are prebiotic-rich foods such as garlic, onions and asparagus. Drink plenty of water. Being well hydrated is good for your health in many ways. Meanwhile, limit excessive sugar and processed food as they can disrupt the balance of healthy gut bacteria. Antibiotic use has also been linked to an unhealthy gut by researchers who published in “Nature”. Talk to your doctor about which antibiotics are essential and when alternatives might be possible. Chronic stress can negatively affect gut health. Practice relaxation techniques such as meditation or yoga. Get adequate sleep to allow your body’s immune cells to function optimally. The gut lining acts as a barrier preventing harmful substances and pathogens from entering the bloodstream. Beneficial bacteria help regulate the immune system and protect against harmful invaders. When the gut detects potential threats it triggers an immune response, releasing antibodies and immune cells to defend against infections. 18 | MED MATTERS 2024 I n Sussex County, where community bonds run deep and a commitment to well-being is paramount, a trio of dedicated advocates – Rita Williams, Krista Griffin, and Kim Blanch – are spearheading a transformative movement. United in their mission to foster healthier lifestyles and promote longevity, they champion the Blue Zones Project®, an innovative community-by-community initiative poised to reshape the fabric of local life by prioritizing wellness and vitality. Together, they've founded Blue Project DE and are making significant progress on bringing the Blue Zones Project® to Delaware. But what exactly are Blue Zones? Originating from the pioneering work of Dan Buettner and his team, Blue Zones are regions around the world where people live remarkably longer, healthier lives compared to the global average. These areas have been identified through extensive research and observation, revealing common lifestyle and environmental factors that contribute to the exceptional longevity of their inhabitants. Implementation of the Blue Zones Project® would encompass a wide range of strategies aimed at optimizing various aspects of community life. From improving city streets with policies to discourage smoking and promoting bike lanes and sidewalks, to enhancing public spaces such as parks, lakes, and walking paths, the initiative seeks to create environments that encourage physical activity and social interaction. Schools would also play a crucial role in the implementation with efforts focused on improving cafeteria offerings and creating safe walking paths to encourage active transportation among students. Additionally, restaurants and grocery stores would be encouraged to provide healthier food options while employers would be urged ❯❯ LOCAL HEALTH Blue Zones AROUND THE WORLD Blue Zones are regions around the world where people live remarkably longer, healthier lives compared to the global average. MED MATTERS 2024 | 21 Drawing inspiration from the successes of progressive cities like Beach Cities, California, Albert Lea, Minnesota, and Klamath Falls, Oregon, the Blue Zones Project® offers a proven blueprint for success. By implementing evidence-based solutions and fostering robust community engagement, Sussex County has the opportunity to emerge as a national leader in well-being and longevity. On November 8, 2023, the team hosted a Roundtable forum in Lewes with state, municipal, and healthcare leaders; community-based and not-for-profit organizations; business owners and potential funders. The Roundtable was followed by a well-attended Blue Zones Delaware Community Engagement Event where Blue Zones expert, Nick Buettner, presented research on the longest-lived and healthiest places in the world and the common lifestyle and cultural traits of those regions. Attendees learned how these traits have been implemented in communities throughout the United States to promote health and well-being and how they could benefit our communities. The robust discussions that followed demonstrated a strong interest and support from both community leaders and members. Their presentation to local stakeholders highlighted the transformative potential of the Blue Zones concept, which has already yielded positive results in 51 communities across the United States. 38 | MED MATTERS 2024 The Role of Sleep Not getting enough shut-eye might have wider implications. Anyone can struggle with a bout of poor sleep or even occasional insomnia. Stress, the inability to wind down, and eating or drinking too late at night will sometimes get in the way. But regularly missing out on the required amount of rest, or suffering from sleep apnea, has been linked to significant implications for your heart by the National Institutes of Health. Sleep can have a huge impact on your heart health. WHY IT’S IMPORTANT Quality sleep is a key element of general physical and mental health, according to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute. Deficient sleep patterns have obvious and immediate impacts, including attention problems, headaches and drowsiness. Your risk of accidents jumps, as does an eventual development of chronic illness. The institute recommends at least 7-8 hours of uninterrupted sleep per day. Regularly getting less can lead to high blood pressure and other potentially serious heart issues. ❯❯ HEART HEALTH RECOGNIZING THE PROBLEM There’s nothing to worry about if you have a restless night here or there. But experts point to several warning signs if there is a larger problem with your sleep patterns. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine has outlined the most urgent issues. Talk to your doctor if you’re experiencing unusual fatigue physician will do a physical examination and blood tests, but also discuss your work and life. In some cases, lifestyle choices may be recommended. If the problem persists, you may be enrolled in a sleep study. COMMON SLEEP ISSUE Many people unknowingly suffer from sleep apnea, a condition that prevents us from entering the deep periods of rest that are essential for brain and body health, including the heart. In fact, the interruptions associated with sleep apnea have been directly linked to the development of cardiovascular issues. The National Institutes of Health reported that men who’ve been diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea are 58% more likely to eventually develop potentially deadly coronary heart disease. The institute recommends at least 7-8 hours of uninterrupted sleep per day. or sleepiness during daytime hours, consistently interrupted sleep or chronic snoring, consistent difficulty in concentration, irritability or headaches, and memory loss. 40 | MED MATTERS 2024 ❯❯ HEART HEALTH The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends engaging in aerobic exercises and breaking them into 10-minute intervals or more to enhance heart health. Here are key areas to focus on: Aerobic Exercises: Engage in moderate-intensity activities such as brisk walking, biking, gardening, swimming, and dancing to lower blood pressure, control blood sugar, and improve circulation. For those with tight schedules, opt for shorter but more intense routines like jogging, swimming laps, biking fast, hiking uphill, or playing soccer. One minute of vigorous activity equals approximately two minutes of moderate-intensity exercise. Consult your healthcare provider before starting any new exercise routine. Strength Training: Incorporate lower-intensity resistance training exercises like pushups, squats, sit-ups, and lifting weights to lower bad cholesterol levels and reduce the risk of stroke or heart attack. Aim for strength or resistance training at least twice a week, targeting major muscle groups such as shoulders, chest, legs, hips, back, and abs. Perform 8-12 repetitions in sets. Flexibility Routines: Include stretching exercises such as yoga, Pilates, or tai chi to improve balance, flexibility, and prevent cramps, muscle pain, and joint aches. Whether through formal classes or home routines, aim for 3-5 stretches per session, holding each stretch for about 30 seconds. Focus on smooth, pain-free motion and avoid jerky movements to prevent injury. Remember to breathe normally during stretches. 44 | MED MATTERS 2024 ❯❯ HEART HEALTH Look for the Signs SAVING A LIFE As many as one in five heart attacks are considered “silent,” meaning they happen without much or any notice. But the other 80% are accompanied by signs that should set off alarm bells. If you notice them, be ready to leap into action. Transport the person to the hospital or call for medical assistance. The sooner help arrives, the more likely they are to survive. WATCH FOR THIS The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services reports that the most crucial warning sign is chest pain, usually on the left side or center. Heart attacks are usually associated with a feeling of squeezing, pressure or fullness. Pain might also radiate to other areas like the back, shoulders, arms, jaw, neck or upper torso. Be aware of any trouble breathing or shortness of breath, particularly when the person is not active. Nausea or vomiting may occur, along with a stomachache or heartburn. Another worry is persistent dizziness, or feeling lightheaded and fatigued. Some heart attacks are accompanied by a feeling of feverishness like a cold sweat. The chances of dying of a heart attack have soared over the last few years, an especially troubling fact considering that heart disease was already a leading cause of death for Americans. That’s why it’s never been more important to be aware of the signs associated with a heart attack. Acting fast could save a life. MED MATTERS 2024 | 45 WHAT TO DO Of course, many of these symptoms point to other, less urgent issues. That’s why it’s so crucial to understand and share your family history with a doctor. They’ll also perform regular physical examinations to track your heart health journey. You may want to seek medical care even if you’re experiencing new pain, having trouble breathing or feeling unusually tired. Be particularly cautious if more than one of these symptoms is experienced. Call 911 right away in the event of an emergency. EMTs will begin treatment right away. Those who’ve had previous heart attacks are also reminded that they are not all the same. Symptoms may present quite differently the next time.
